PASTORAL NOTES AND RUBRICSOur Lord Jesus Christ, by his example and teach-ing, entrusted to his Church a ministry of healing. This ministry is exercised in various ways: by visiting,by the laying on of hands, by anointing, by confes-sion and absolution, and pre-eminently in the cele-bration of the Holy Eucharist, which is both themedicine of immortality and the sacrament of our fel-lowship in the Body of Christ.

If any communicant is unable through sickness or in-firmity to come to church, the parish priest should beinformed.

The priest or other minister should take into accountthe particular circumstances, needs and desires ofthe sick and those who look after them and shouldwillingly use the various opportunities that the ritesprovide sensitively, intelligently and flexibly, short-ening, lengthening or adapting them as the physical, mental and emotional condition of the sick persondictates. However, those parts of the rite marked bya line may never be omitted. Ministers should re-member that the elderly, the sick and the dying, es-pecially those with impaired vision, may often findcomfort and reassurance in familiar prayers andgreat sensitivity is needed if they are to be helped tomake use of these provisions.

Where the priest anoints or lays hands upon morethan one person the appropriate references in theprayers should be changed from the singular to theplural.

In choosing readings and prayers ministers shouldbear in mind that the housebound are not necessar-ily sick and that therefore the readings of the previ-ous Sunday or of a holy day may be the mostappropriate.

In order to respect the fullness of the sacramentalsign, whenever possible it is recommended that apriest celebrates the Holy Eucharist with the sick per-son and with his or her family and friends. Where cir-cumstances dictate Holy Communion may beadministered by a priest or other authorised ministerfrom the Reserved Sacrament.

Our Lord Jesus Christ gave power to his church toforgive sins in his name. This ministry, committed tothem at their ordination, is exercised by bishops andpriests. General absolution may be given, in the pub-lic services of the church, or absolution may be givenindividually and privately. The practice of private con-fession, made under the seal of secrecy, whilst notobligatory, is open to all and its use is particularly en-couraged for those who may benefit from it, whetherto give peace of mind to a troubled conscience or asan aid to growth in a life of faith and devotion. If cir-cumstances allow, and the sick person has not con-fessed in this way before, careful instruction shouldbe given to ensure suitable preparation.

When the first form of general confession is used, the sick person may repeat it line by line after theminister if this is judged to be more appropriate.

The office of anointing the sick is performed by bis-hops and priests. The oil, which should be pure oliveoil, is normally consecrated by the bishop.

A public liturgy of healing should include readingsfrom scripture, prayers of praise, intercession andthanksgiving, and a confession of faith. Appropriatepsalms and hymns may be sung. The laying on ofhands and the anointing of the sick are celebratedaccording to the rites given on pages 31ff and 39ff.

The priest may read one of the following or otherappropriate sentences from Scripture:

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, Come to me, all whosework is hard, whose load is heavy; and I will giveyou rest.

This is a true saying, to be completely acceptedand believed: Christ Jesus came into the world tosave sinners.

The priest may bless the penitent, saying:

The Lord be in your heart and on your lips, thatyou may confess your sins in honesty and sincerityand know the truth that sets you free; in the nameof the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolySpirit. Amen.

The confession then follows, using these or otherappropriate words:

APPENDIX 8

SUGGESTED READINGSN.B. At a celebration of the Holy Eucharist,a passage from numbers 1-8 may be chosen forthe first reading, a passage from numbers 9-17 forthe psalm and a passage from numbers 18-23 forthe gospel reading.

1. Isaiah 43.1-3a, 4-5aThus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob,he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I haveredeemed you; I have called you by name, you aremine. When you pass through the waters, I will bewith you; and through the rivers, they shall not over-whelm you; when you walk through fire you shall notbe burned, and the flame shall not consume you. ForI am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, yourSaviour. Because you are precious in my sight, andhonoured, and I love you, I give people in return foryou, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you.

2. Extracts from Isaiah 61.1-3The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; he has sentme to bring good news to the oppressed, to proclaimliberty to captives, to comfort all who mourn, to givethem a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladnessinstead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead ofa faint spirit.

3. Jeremiah 30.17I will restore health to you, and your wounds I willheal, says the Lord.

4. Acts 4.8-12Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said, ‘Rulers of thepeople and elders, if we are questioned today be-cause of a good deed done to someone who wassick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people ofIsrael, that this man is standing before you in goodhealth by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from thedead. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected byyou, the builders; it has become the cornerstone. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no othername under heaven given among mortals by whichwe must be saved.’

5. Romans 8.18-25I consider that the sufferings of this present time arenot worth comparing with the glory about to be re-vealed to us. For the creation waits with eager long-ing for the revealing of the children of God; for thecreation was subjected to futility, not of its own willbut by the will of the one who subjected it, in hopethat the creation itself will be set free from itsbondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of theglory of the children of God. We know that the wholecreation has been groaning in labour pains until now;and not only the creation, but we ourselves, whohave the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly whilewe wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen

is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But ifwe hope for what we do not see, we wait for it withpatience.

This reading may continue as follows, or theverses may be read on their own.

Romans 8.26-28Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for wedo not know how to pray as we ought, but that verySpirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. AndGod, who searches the heart, knows what is in themind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes forthe saints according to the will of God. We know thatall things work together for good for those who loveGod, who are called according to his purpose.

6. 2 Corinthians 1.3-5Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord JesusChrist, the Father of mercies and the God of all con-solation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so thatwe may be able to console those who are in any af-fliction with the consolation with which we ourselvesare consoled by God. For just as the sufferings ofChrist are abundant for us, so also our consolationis abundant through Christ.

7. James 5.13-16aAre any among you suffering? They should pray. Areany cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Areany among you sick? They should call for the eldersof the church and have them pray over them, anoint-ing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayerof faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them

up; and anyone who has committed sins will be for-given. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.

8. Extracts from Revelation 22.1-2The angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God andof the Lamb. On either side of the river, is the tree oflife; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing ofthe nations.

Into your hands I commend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.
