YES, I AM A PRIMITIVE BE-

ING. INDEED, I AM CLOSE TO THE ORIGIN. WHY?

BECAUSE I WENT BACK TO MY

ROOTS. I CAME BACK AND VISITED THE TREE OF LIFE. THE SAVAGE AND THE UNDERCIVI-LIZED ARE OUR ANCESTORS AND TEACHERS. THE ELDERS ARE SAVAGE AND PRIMITIVE. THEY CAN TEACH US THE OLD WAYS. THEY CAN TEACH US THE MEAN-ING OF LOVE AND CIVILIZATION.

WANNA LEARN?FIND A PLACE IN YOUR HEART. I KNOW IT’S THERE. FIND YOUR

How and When did it all start? It all started when I made a promise to my producer to release his music to the public in 2009. This proved to be more difficult as this meant approaching record labels and distribution companies who were closing their doors on us. I then understood that CD sales were decreasing and releasing a CD did not mean an artist could live and survive on CD sales. I decided to start my own Label and have my own terms which made it easier for my artists to be heard.

What’s your label vision? The vision was to build a music brand and we all put our knowledge and expertise into working for the brand with the aim that once the brand is recognised, our work would also be recognised and the brand will start to work for us. The thought of owning a label was too much at first as with every-thing that you try to do for the first time, you are bound to make mistakes. But I strongly believe in learning from ones mistakes and improving where thing were lacking. I pre-viously had to relay on other companies to assist with artwork, mastering or promoting our music. I was not happy with the result and decided to do everything personally and encouraged FURIC (who I am very proud to have on board this journey as PLAY IT LOUD’s producer & DJ) to man up and start improv-ing on his skills in a very short space of time and he has surprised me in all aspects.

Why/when did you start producing/deejaying?The love for House Music came at a period when I was 11 years old staying in Umlazi Township, and my neighbour had a mobile sound system and he used to practice all the time after school and I would just sit a marvel at what he used to do on those turntables. At the age of 12, I could hold my own and rock a crowd. My mother bought a house in suburb called Woodlands and I lost touch with the music scene. When I started working in the 2000, I developed a new hobby and started to buy vynils. I met up with a few DJs within the Durban scene and started showcasing my talents. When I remember carefully, I was only paid once during the period on 2000 - 2006 when I decided to hang my bags and focus on my family. I used to always have my bag of tricks in the boot of my car just in case someone needed a DJ and I just used to enjoy making people dance. I earn a de-cent salary so I didn’t feel the need to charge people. When I hung my bags the bug was still there but family came first. I got married and my wife and I have two kids. I bought myself a PC and during the period when I was teaching FURIC how to mix 2003 -2006 he improve so much that he started learning how to produce and he taught me how to use Fruity Loops 5 which was the program we started to produce with or at least find our way around a music production software.

Who are your partners in crime/in rhyme? ;)My partners are: FURIC who is both a DJ and a Producer. Faye Wonder who is our fe-male Vocalist, Poet and Song Writer. O’brian Jwara (aka Kanye West) is PLAY IT LOUD’s attorney. FURIC will be the next biggest name in House Music in the international scene. Faye Wonder was what the brand was looking for as we had a lot of good tracks but soon learnt that vocal tracks sell more than tracks without any vocals.

How did you find them? We started looking for a fe-male vocalist in 2010 but no one could fit in. By fitting in, I was looking for someone with personality than some-one who could just sing and finding this combination was never easy until I heard Faye Wonders voice on a track she sent me on Facebook. I met with Faye Wonder brief-ly last year but I was already in talks with another vocal-ist. When I foresaw that that vocalist was going to create more problems for the brand that to reach our goals I de-cided to be without a vocal-ist until I found the perfect special talent by the name of FAYE WONDER. I knew her before then and I men-tored FURIC from a young age to the professional he is now. So, PLAY IT LOUD is more like a family now with everything in place to build

a powerful Music Brand that will be recognised both lo-cally and internationally. I went to high school with FURIC’s older brother and he always used to hang around us when his brother and I were fine tuning our skill on the ones and twos in my garage. The bug got him as well and begged me to teach him how to play. I was very hard on him and I guess this helped him to be the best in the art of mixing. I met with O’brian Jwara during one of my other business ventures and explained to him what I was working on in terms of building a music brand and he was happy to become the PLAY IT LOUD attorney.

What kind of stuff do you look for in a pro-d u ce r / s i n g e r / a r t i s t ?I look for talent, intelligence with a crazy personality. If one has a crazy personality, they tend to do things that other people are afraid to do. I know this because I have a crazy personality myself. I also describe a crazy person-ality as a creative personality and willing to try different things and not afraid to do what other say is impossible. I get bored very easily so I surround myself with people that make me laugh most of the time. I have also applied this within the company.

What advice do you have for an artist look-

ing to sign for a record label?Times have changed and an artist should take their pro-fession very seriously these days. Internet and personal equipment are key tools if you are serious about calling yourself as an artist. This may sound harsh as there a many potential artists out there who cannot afford to buy equipment for their trade but I strongly recommend this as this is where you can find yourself as an art-ist. They say practice makes perfect, so if you do not own your own equipment, how can you fine tune you skill? The internet is a very good tool to promote your-self as an artist as music has gone digital therefore the artist also has to go digital.

How did you come up with that catchy motto “ADDICTED 2 HOUSE MUSIC? PLAY IT LOUD!!!” Is there a story behind?I normally paste our new podcasts on our new mem-bers on Facebook walls as well as group walls. I noticed that I was not the only one doing this and in order to differentiate myself from the rest, I had to come up with a very catchy motto that House Music lovers can identify with. If the House Music bug catches you, you become addicted to house music. So all I needed to do was to add

Page 9: TRIBAL REALITIES MAGAZINE- September 2012

9 tr

the company name for pro-motional purposes and out came “ADDICTED 2 HOUSE MUSIC? PLAY IT LOUD!!! Catchy, short and sweet.

What is a typical day for you like on planet PLAY IT LOUD? It all hard work but if you are doing something that you love, it does not feel like work. I work for a tobacco company during the day to pay the bills as PLAY IT LOUD is an independent compa-ny so I personally fund the brand from my pocket as our local government does not recognise what we do as a profession and I cannot rely on grants or favours to make my artists dreams come true. It is now or never. So after a full day  in the office, I meet up with FURIC to unwind and catch up on our targets and listen what have been creat-

ed. From there I will go to my laptop and check up on our social networks, do some promoting and work on new artwork for upcoming EPs and Podcasts. I have put my production and DJ talents aside to focus more time and energy on my artists until they are fully established. I know that my time will come and I will add a differ-ent dimension to the brand.

Owner, Producer and DJ: You are a man of many hats, uh?Yes I am. Funny that you used that phrase “man of many hats” as this is exactly what I teach my artists. I order to be successful, you must be able grow your personality and be able to multi-task. I have to balance my life to take care of my wife and my two kids, a full time corporate career, running a record label, man-

age my artists and handle daily administrative duties.

What is House Music?House Music is a lifestyle. I call it a bug. Once the bug bites you, you are addicted. The thing about House Mu-sic is that it is so diverse (in terms of Deep House, Pro-gressive House, Techno, Dubstep, Hard House and so on) that you can host 5 different floors of different genres of House Music and you will find all floors full. Therefore one is addicted to a different type of beat which means House Music is diverse and can never be summed up in one sentence.

To elaborate more on this bug, you can hear 1000 House Music tunes today but tomorrow you can listen a dope track that you have never heard before and find yourself dancing. You can-

Page 10: TRIBAL REALITIES MAGAZINE- September 2012

tr 10

You cannot have enough House Music and as a col-lector, House Music evolves. There are so many House Mu-sic producers that there is an unlimited amount of House Music that one will never hear. So we go to clubs or we go online, or we go meet with friends, or we tune on to out favourite music station to lis-ten to something different. It is a bug and we keep want-ing more and more. It is the fastest growing genre and there is now an elements of House Music in Hip Hop, R&B and others kinds of genres.

Comment The SA grow-ing presence on the In-ternational music sceneWe noticed this by DJ Fresh crossing abroad and enter-taining House Music lov-ers around the world. Black Coffee is also having a great run and is fully booked in most major cities around the world. I can name many more but to answer the question, SA is a growing presence in the Internation-al music scene and hope-

fully PLAY IT LOUD can also make a statement and hope-fully come to rock in Italy.

Bravo! Yes, come and play!^__^ Self-entrepre-neurship in SA: Do you consider yourself an en-trepreneur? What does that word mean in South Africa in the year 2012?Yes. In order to be success-ful in SA you need that en-trepreneural flair one way or another. SA has a great po-tential for entrepreneurs es-pecially with the internet era on the boom. There so many opportunities and there are more and more success stories that you hear every-day. The PLAY IT LOUD story will be one of those success stories to be told. We know what we are capable of and it is just a matter of time until we are able to go on tour and spread the love of what we do. We are just looking for the right International promoter.

Selling physical CD vs Digital Downloads…

CDs are doomed to be ex-tinct. Just like the CD took over the Music Tapes and DVD over the Video Tapes. PLAY IT LOUD is aligning itself to be fully digital so that when that era comes, we will be prepared and not sink with the times.

Music Business & Inter-net: The music industry is experiencing mas-sive revolutions. In your opinion what are the new arising opportuni-ties for South African Independent labels? We are able to produce and sell our music to an interna-tional audience via the likes of Beatport and Traxsource. In the past this was only a dream and only the estab-lished record labels would be heard internationally.

What do you think the next five years in the music industry might look like overall? We are heading into a digi-tal era and once we go fully

[tr] Ciao Dominic and welcome to TRIBAL REALITIES! You are an in-dependent filmaker, writer and hu-man rights campaigner: how and when did it all start?[db] I got into filmmaking after visiting West Papua. I was really shocked by the situation there as I had never heard what Indonesia was doing to the indigenous peo-ple. I returned home to the UK and told friends about the situation and no one had heard of it either, and it was never covered by the media. So I decided when I had the next opportunity I would return there to make a film to help bring the voice of the people out to the world. [tr] How was to film and produce your first video documentary? [db] I didn’t have any training

Dominic Brown is an independent filmak-er, writer and human rights campaigner. He produced, directed & filmed several under-covered documentaries across the planet, providing rare insights into unheard and controversial issues - from West Papua to Western Sahara. As a freelance journalist and writer he cooperates with worldwide media and newspapers like Al Jazeera, The Guardian, The Independent. His breathtaking and consciousness-raising documentary Forgotten Bird of Paradise has been awarded “Best Documentary” at the 2011 Dam International Short Film Festival, and has been screened at inde-pendent film festivals - Raindance, Green Man, Port Eliot and Montreal First Peo-ple Festival. making. I bought the camera 2 weeks before I went away. In a way it worked to my advantage as I just de-veloped my own technique to film-ing. [tr] Undercover documentaries: op-portunities vs constraints?[db] Filming undercover is a very nerve-racking experience. You nev-er know what could happen if you are caught, so you have to plan very well and also ensure the safety of those that are helping you on the ground. In a place like West Papua or Western Sahara, going undercov-er means you can go to the heart of a story. People want to speak to you and share their story because media is almost banned and there is usually no way for these people to speak out.[tr] what’s going on in West Papua

and why did you choose to make this movie? [db] There is a genocide taking place there against the indigenous peo-ple by the occupying Indonesian regime. Over 500,000 people have been killed and foreign media and human rights groups are banned from entering the region. I made the film to try and help raise aware-ness about the situation there.[tr] You spent 2 months filming un-dercover and living together with the indigenous people of West Pap-ua. How did this experience changed your life?[db] It has a massive impact on you when you are in that situation. There were times when I didn’t think I would get out without being caught, and in the past foreign journalists

killed by the Indonesian military in places like East Timor. Living with the indigenous Papuan peo-ple was an enlightening experi-ence. They are so connected to their surroundings and nature. Everything from a thunderstorm to rain is seen as a sign from their ancestors to them, warning them of impending dangers etc.[tr] What did you learn from them? Actually, what can We,

The World, learn from them? [db] We can learn so much from the way they survive. Their farm-ing methods are so much more evolved than ‘western’ methods. The smallest areas of land can sustain a family throughout the year. There is no supermarkets or cornershops. People there are totally self-sufficent; they make their own clothes, grow their own food, make their own houses.

Page 17: TRIBAL REALITIES MAGAZINE- September 2012

[tr] How was it the first time you meet personally  Benny Wenda - West Pap-uan tribal leader and an internation-al lobbyist for the independence of West Papua from Indonesia? [db] Benny is a very humble man and has a great amount of wisdom. He is only 35 years old but has the pres-ence of someone many many years older. I always find it very inspiring that after all the suffering he and his people have been through, he never expresses any hatred or bitterness towards Indonesia. He just wants his people to be free and to live in peace. [tr] What was   the impact of your movie on   Western countries’ audi-ences and constituencies? [db] Forgotten Bird of Paradise has been really well received, and been featured on reports on BBC News-night and Channel 4 News, and also ABC in Australia. Also, the full ver-sion of the film will soon be shown on national television in Papua New Guinea. I hope it will enlighten peo-ple there about what is happening to the Papuans living on the other side of the border.[tr] Watching your movies, the pat-tern of “refugees in their own land” seems to arise all the time. Why is that happening in our world?[db] I think alot of it comes down to the global economy, greed and de-sire for resources. It is a reflection of the world we live in, and unfortu-nately economics are placed above the rights of individuals.

[tr] You risk your life to give voice to the  forgotten struggle for freedom of people from faraway countries. How do you feel   when   you come back home in London, after filming undercover for months?[db] There is always a sense of relief to be back, especially knowing you have got the footage out ok. But then the hardwork starts with trans-lating and editing![tr] Tell us more about your new doc-umentary La Badil (No Other Choice)[db] It tells the story of the Sahrawi people who are struggling for self-determination. Over 15,000 people rose up against Moroccan rule in 2010 but the international media didn’t report on it, and the uprisings was quashed. There are many simil-iarites between their struggle and that of the West Papuan people. [tr]Future Plans? Forthcoming proj-ects?[db] I’m working on a couple of films right now. One is about a man who believes he is the reincarnation of King Arthur, and the other is about Benny Wenda, West Papua’s exiled independence leader. I also hope to do some other overseas projects in the next few months.[tr] looking forward to watch your new video documentaries. keep us posted on your proj-ects and Good Luck from TR!

sic...that basement music that we all grew up listening to.When did it all started? The group was formed by both mem-bers when they came together in the early 2009... with experience around their local home town they have done shows and performed enough to pay dues. We are Djs/producers/remixers and event organizersWhen and how did you guys meet music in your life?3’s Beats: I have always been musi-cally driven since Day 1! I was born in a music household with my mother as one of the best singers of her time but due to a family she had to sac-rifice her dream for two wonderful boys and a daughter - not knowing one of his sons will peruse her dream and make it his own... (laugh). At the tender age of 11, I actively took part in the art of writing poems and rap-ping, gaining experience, you know. My taste for quality music exploded. Early 2006, I started production (hip hop beats, many mix tapes, perfor-mances). In 2008, with several tro-phies under my belt, I started ventur-ing with my team into other genres of music, self taught keyboards...then fell in love with House Music and met (2009) Calvin Skhosana aka DJ Calvin DJ Calvin: I fell in love with music at an early age: you know, while my friends would go out playing usual activities like soccer etc... I would stay indoors, consuming most of my time listening to music. Then I started ex-

perimenting with Virtual Dj, realizing my good ear for music. Finally, I decided to jump to the next level: entered a production and djing school - ”SVJ Records”- and by the year 2009 I went straight into the art of production to meet my partner in music Thuso Morabe aka 3’s Beats. And Basemental Level was born. Kewl! tell us more about your releas-es, remixes, collaborations...3’s Beats: We are currently fresh in the international scene but we have already collaborated with a record-ing label from France called Groove Life Records and also have being featured on their online radio show called “Radio Clubixx”. I am planting the pale blue flow-ers of Nigella Damascena. An annual garden flowering plant, which comes from the ancient city of Damascus, Syria. And I am thinking about the mothers cry-ing and the children lost in the void of a no-future generation. The never-ending and brutal siege of Homs. Tanks, machine guns, RPGs. Bombs are falling from the sky like deadly water drops. A killing monsoon in the Middle East. Then Aleppo and

Damascus. This is War. This is not Human. This is Insane. War is a failure. Everywhere. We are all tired of crying over and over. Again. Humankind cannot re-peat the same mistakes over and over. Again. We cannot live the same pain-full day, everyday. it is time we stop the triangle of blood, vengeance and hate. it is time we stop the cycle of death.

It is time to say new things.
