Hannalee’s home (Roswell, Georgia)

“I didn’t know what hour of the night it was when we got to Roswell. It was dark as the inside of a cave, but I could still see the foundations of the houses that had been burned down. The empty places made me feel sad. We crossed the town square where we’d sat for five days in the hot sun last summer and walked to the house where Rosellen’s Aunt Marilla lived.” pg. 162

In July 1864 the Yankees arrived in Roswell and were ordered to burn down there mill and to take the women, children and some men that worked at the mill to be brought and sold as servants in Indiana.

There big room in Louisville

“After we ate, we settled down on the floor around the edges of that big room and I noticed that other folks besides soldiers began to come inside– both amen and ladies.” pg.65

Louisville in the American Civil War was a major stronghold of Union Forces, which kept Kentucky firmly in the Union. It was the center of planning, supplies, recruiting and transportation for numerous campaigns, especially in the Western Theater. By the end of the war, Louisville had not been attacked once.

The Fletcher’s house

“Its was a pretty little brick house on the edge of town. By looking out the side of the Fletcher’s front porch I could just see the ohio river, red in the sunset…….Mr. Fletcher led me upstairs to a little room under the roof. Even with the one little window open, it was so hot inside there that I had to gasp for breath. In the winter it’d most likely be cold as dying.” pg.78

Mr. Fletcher was a phrenologist ( he studies skulls ) and his wife is a big brat and complains about everything Hannalee does for her.

Story Critique

I thought this book is a great example of how cruel the war was in the 1800s.

I think people who like war books, suspense books and touching and sentimental books would love this!

If you want to know if her brother is really dead or if Rosellen ever comes back or if Hannalee ever makes it home you have to read the book!
