OCTOBER- FIGHTER PRACTICE MOVES!
OLD SCHOOL FIGHTER PRACTICE AT HIMMEL PARK
In the Month of OCTOBER on the 13th, 20th and 27th, we are NOT
ABLE to USE Reid Park for Fighter Practice due to the Circus coming
to town. Therefore, we will return to Himmel Park for those three
Tuesday nights in our old stomping grounds of the Northwest corner on
the Tennis Court Side. It is for those three weeks ONLY and we will
return to Reid following those Fighter Practices. Please share this infor-
mation with everyone!

From Their Excellencies
Greetings Good People of Tir Ysgithr!
The heat of the Summer is slowly but surely fading to memory. The shadows of
night steal more and more of our daylit hours. While we may rejoice in cooler hours dur-
ing our nightly fighter practices, we must also be prepared for the calamities that this sea-
son brings upon us. Strange sounds have once again been heard emanating from the deep
caverns on our Eastern borders. Creatures fell and wild have been spotted roaming the
countryside. Of course, this can only mean that the vile serpent Draconus awakens from
his yearly slumber. Worse, the disasters that spring in His wake call forth the worst ele-
ments in the land, and no doubt soon we shall see armed and armored warriors setting
camp upon these lands. War is a certainty.
Take heart, Tir Ysgithr, for we are a proud and steady people. It is said that
many hands make light work. I say to you that many warriors make short work of any
beast or foe. Many artisans may create and display works to dazzle the eye and confound
the senses. Many servants, (and all who call Tir Ysgithr home are servants, for such do
we honor our Crown,) make difficult tasks trivial.
If you fight, take up arms in defense of the realm. If you create, then do so and
teach others to do so as well. And all of you, be generous with your time. I know that
your hours are precious to you, so I shan’t request more than you can bear. Please, each of
you, spare an hour of your time in service in the coming War. Doing so will reduce the
burden on your fellows, and increase the enjoyment of all.
Many strong arms, keen minds, and dreaming hearts improve the realm and
show to all that Tir Ysgithr, the Gem of Atenveldt, is truly a treasure worth fighting for,
and a Gem That Shall Never Be Plundered!

Bacon Bits In the days of the birth of the Gem of Atenveldt, when the group became large
and active enough to petition for baronial status, and the Crown seeing it just and good,
appointed a Baron Designate. The Baron Designate for Tir Ysgithrwas Mas-
ter Woodford of Lorien, OL. On May 7, 1973, he and his Lady Maryaof Zagamar, the Mad,
were invested, thus becoming Tir Ysgithr's founding Baron and Baroness. They served as
the Crowns administrators until they stepped down. on November 23, 1974
The Crown was then faced with appointing a new Baron Designate. In those days
of yore, no candidates were presented unto the Crown, nor was the populace polled for their
preference of canidates.
On August 31st, 1974, at an event titled La Maison de Lumiere, a major an-
nouncement was made, to wit; "The Baron and Baroness designate for the Barony
of Tir Ysgithr are: Robert, Lord Strongbow, K.S.C.A. and LadyRodema de Rohan,
O.L.A.O.L.Y." They were invested as Baron and Baroness 11-23-74. Lord Adler
des Berges was appointed Seneschal of the Barony.
On July 18, 1975, "Lady Rodema de Rohan, Baroness of Tir Ysgithr and
LordStrongbow, Baron of Tir Ysgithr," Announced that they would resign their status and
Baron and Baroness in August (which occurred on 9/13/1975) , due to
"mundane" (mundane being the term used then, and "modern" the politically correct term
used now) employment requirements.
Lord Alder des Berges, was destined to go down in the baronial history books, as
it was announced on September 13, 1975, that he was being appointed by Their Majesties

Surviving Camping at an SCA
Event
Huzzah! You are going to go camping at an SCA event! Memories that will last a lifetime,
inside jokes between friends, tears of joy, and laughter are all about to happen! Everyone
works so hard to get their garb ready and prepare for war, but there are some things that get
forgotten or overlooked when preparing to attend an event. So here is a comprehensive list of
things you most certainly do not want to forget for a camping event.
The Essentials
A tent
A bed of some sort. This can be an air mattress, a camp mat, a futon, or even a thick pile
of blankets to lay on.
Blankets and or sleeping bag
Pillows
Food. Rather this be buying into a kitchen plan, bringing food from home, or volunteer-
ing a lot of hours at an event with a hospitality department that feeds volunteers while
they work.
A way to prepare food. A stove or means to cook over a fire, or a cooler to keep sand-
wich fixings cold.
Lighting. Flash Light(s) or lantern(s)
Warm clothes (thermals, thick socks, hat, gloves, coat or cloak) Temps can drop pretty
low as the sun sets and it is good to be prepared
Good shoes that can withstand the elements.
A drinking vessel.
Cooler
Changes of clothes
Water bottles
Trash bags
Sunscreen
Toothpaste tooth brush
Deodorant (not optional)
Baby Wipes (trust me these will save your life)

I started out in the SCA with a mundane tent sleeping on piles of blankets. I had no flash
light, I had a single burner stove and a very small cooler. We ate ramen, sandwiches, and
canned soups and drank water. We were fine with those sorts of provisions, and you can
make it with that minimal of a supply list. My next list is full of non-essentials that will make
your life a lot more comfortable at an event.
A shade tent (this can be a pop up, a simply made shade structure with wood and fabric)
a cot (nice to be off the ground especially with sites that have possible snakes or scorpi-
ons)
a table for your stove and preparing foods
a mirror to dress in front of
libations (there is a lot of sharing in the SCA but one can not always assume libations
will be freely given)
Wellies or rain boots or even Crocs (these shoes if covered in mud can be hosed off and
will not need to be thrown out after a muddy event)
umbrella
lantern hooks
glow sticks (help keep track of those kids also helps light up the porta-castles if you do
not have a light)
A tent heater. You can not leave these on for lengths of time in nylon tents with out an
opening for the toxic gas to escape but you can turn it on before bed to warm the tent up
and your blankets.
Candles and also citronella candles for outside to keep the bugs away.
Fire pit and wood
Chairs
Small solar panels for charging electronic items
Large water jug(s)
A wagon for filling water jugs or dumping gray water
Solar lights for out side of your tent
Camping on a budget
Not everyone has the funds to camp or attend events at the level of others. There
are ways to save money and still be able to play. I started out on a single mother budget, and
was still able to go to events with my smalls.
Canned soups are your friend! Dinty Moore stew is a thick hearty meal. For lunches we
did hummus and crackers with raw veggies and fruits. Breakfast was oatmeal packs or
pastries or muffins. I would make jiffy muffins and bag them up.

Volume 26 October 2015 Anno Societatus L Issue 6
Thrift stores are your friend in many ways! The thrift shops are littered with tankards
for a couple dollars. Also feast gear is readily available there. You can find fabric and
sewing findings for making garb. Also cots and tents and sleeping bags. I have found
wonderful candles and lanterns, chairs small tables too. I have found usable garb for
kids there also (middle eastern kaftans)
Thrift store bed sheets work great for T-tunics for kids! Sweat pants and pajama bot-
toms also work great for the kids.
Some wars like Southern Crusades an Estrella have a Hospitality office that feeds vol-
unteers while they are working. So you can arrange to work the shifts you need meals
for and it all works out to help the war, and also help you.
Water jugs and lemon-aid dry mix is a cheap way to have drinks for war.
Want a period tent but can't afford it, make one! Viking A-Frames are pretty simple to
sew. Canvas is affordable at SAS Fabrics. I have known a lady to use thick painters
cloth even to make a tent. Just buy water resistant spray to treat the fabric.
Your chatelaine or Gold Key is your friend! If you do not have enough garb or cloaks
check in with them because they have stuff to loan to help you out till you can make it
on your own.
Pro-Tips
After years of playing this game you pick up a lot of knowledge about making life easier at
events. A lot of these things you can live without, but once you have lived with them it is
hard to not do these things.
Seal-a-meal is not just your friend, it is your best friend! You hate all the mess from
cooking at events? Hate doing a ton of dishes at an event? I do! The trick is in PRE-
COOKING! So here is what you do. You cook everything you plan to eat in advanced.
I mean pot roast, curry, spaghetti sauce, stew, seriously whatever! Then you seal it in
the meal saver and shove it in the freezer. You can also do this to marinade skewers
steaks and chicken you might grill on site. You get to the event and all you do is boil a
pan of water, drop the bags in and 30 or so minutes later supper is ready! This can also
be done with pancake batter so all you have to do is cut a corner of the bag and pour it
onto the griddle! But not only is this amazing for the obvious reasons. It also gives you
big blocks of frozen food to put in your cooler to help keep it cold and preserve your
ice! My household has also found that if you freeze the liquid types of food like your
soups and sauces that if you freeze it first in a tupper-ware then seal it, you have
blocks to pack which makes for easier packing of the cooler.
Make signs for your coolers. We have made signs listing what is each cooler and place
it in sheet protectors and attached it to each cooler so we are not having to dig around
trying to figure out which cooler has what.

Make signs for your coolers. We have made signs listing what is each cooler and place
it in sheet protectors and attached it to each cooler so we are not having to dig around
trying to figure out which cooler has what.
Lunch cooler. Have a small cooler that only contains lunch items and just set that cool-
er out next to the bread when lunch time hits. Also a breakfast cooler with the coffee
creamer, fruit and yogurts and such in it. In our household we also have tupperwares to
deliver lunch out to folks who are working.
Propane water heater. No more boiling water for dishes. Just turn on the gas for instant
hot water. This is also great for camp showers.
Your garden section or any major store has some nice things to offer. There are solar
lights that look like appropriate lanterns. Chandeliers for your yard gazebo work won-
derfully for illuminating your dining tent. Also this is where you find iron stake in the
ground lantern hangers.
Tent Potty (for those who don't wish to make middle of the night castle runs) Buy a
bucket from the hardware store put a trash bag in it and fill with kitty litter. In the
morning pull out the bag and throw it away. This is meant for #1 not #2!
I am sure there are many tips and pointers out there I have not covered, but these
are some of the best ones I have come to learn over the years. I hope you will all find this
useful!

Did Women in History Fight?
What do you mean women in history fought? Sit down, friend, and listen close because the
past is bursting with intense, unyielding, sword-wielding women who put men in their time
to shame. So if you think women can’t fight rapier just wait until you hear about Julie
d’Aubigny, a duelist who rocked France with her unconventional lifestyle and deadly blade
skills.
With a grandfather serving as Grand Squire to the King of France himself, Julie
was raised alongside soldiers and cavaliers who were destined for greatness. She couldn’t
help it if some of their training and skills would rub off. In fact, when her father shipped her
off to a husband because of all the trouble she got into, she took that as an opportunity to
get involved with a fencing master in Marseille just to keep her skills sharp.
Julie was too much for him to handle, though, and she eventually overwhelmed
him with her sword skills. She took her time and talents to the French night, challenging
men to singing contests where she would mock them into oblivion with her intense Insult
Sword-Fighting skills all backed up by the three feet of French steel at her hip.
At the same time she was a star of Parisian opera (some A&S alongside her rapier
skills). At one point an actor was getting too friendly to one of her female costars. Julie
reasonably told him to take a flying leap into a shallow puddle, but he refused. One night
she met him in the street, challenged him to a duel, and beat him sick and bloody with a
wooden cane. When he tried to play off the attack as being mugged she presented his
pocket watch (which she had taken) and shamed him before the whole opera. Julie did not
mess around with matters of honor.
Unquestioned master of the Opera? Check. Swordwielding badass? Check.
Seventeenth Century Frenchwoman? Check.
Did women in history fight? Of course they did. With all the wit and
swashbuckling as the greatest pirate or musketeer.
