Missiles Found in UN-Run School in GazaTIMES OF ISRAEL | July 17

S rockets were oundWednesday in a school in Gazaoperated by the United Nations Relieand Works Agency (), the orga-nization confirmed Tursday.

Te weapons were ound in thecourse o the regular inspection o itspremises, saidin a statement, adding that the school was vacant.

strongly condemns thegroup or groups responsible or plac-ing the weapons in one o its instal-lations. Tis is a flagrant violation othe inviolability o its premises under

international law, the statement read.Te discovery would seem to con-

firm Israels o-repeated claim thatHamas and other Gazan terror groupsuse civilian inrastructure to hideweapons.

Tis incident was the first o its

kind in Gaza, the organization said, adding that it endangered civiliansincluding staff and put at risk s

vital mission to assist and protect Pal-estinian reugees in Gaza.

Officials rom the agency, whichhas a reputation in Jerusalem o beingexceedingly critical o Israeli policies

vis--vis the Palestinians, have beensummoned to the Foreign Ministry.Tey have apologized to Israel or theincident, Foreign Minister Avigdor

Liberman said. Te agency, charged with taking

care o the welare o Palestinianreugees, has strong, establishedprocedures to maintain the neutralityo all its premises, including a strictno-weapons policy and routine in-

spections o its installations, to ensurethey are only used or humanitarianpurposes, its statement read.

Israel May ExpandGaza OperationCNN | July 18

A I tanks and soldiersplunged deeper into Gaza, Prime

    I an Egyptian-proposed Gaza ceasefire;

Hamas keeps firing. Hamas deliberately aims rockets atcivilians; Israel painstakingly tries to avoid them, actuallytelephoning civilians in the area and dropping warningcharges, so-called roo knocking.

Heres the difference between us, explains the Israeliprime minister. Were using missile deense to protect ourcivilians, and theyre using their civilians to protect theirmissiles.

Rarely does international politics present a moment osuch moral clarity. Yet we routinely hear this Israel-Gazafighting described as a morally equivalent cycle o vio-lence. Tis is absurd. What possible interest can Israelhave in cross-border fighting? Everyone knows Hamas set

off this mini-war. And everyone knows the proudly sel-declared raison detreo Hamas: the eradication o Israeland its Jews.

Apologists or Hamas attribute the bloodlust to the Israelioccupation and blockade. Occupation? Does no one remem-ber anything? It was less than years ago that worldwidetelevision showed the Israeli Army pulling die-hard settlersoff synagogue roos in Gaza as Israel uprooted its settle-ments, expelled its citizens, withdrew its military and turnedevery inch o Gaza over to the Palestinians. Tere was not asoldier, not a settler, not a single Israeli le in Gaza.

And there was no blockade. On the contrary. Israel

wanted this new Palestinian state to succeed. o help theGaza economy, Israel gave the Palestinians its , green-houses that had produced ruit and flowers or export. Itopened border crossings and encouraged commerce.

Te whole idea was to establish the model or two statesliving peaceully and productively side by side.

Tis is not ancient history. Tis was nine years ago.And how did the Gaza Palestinians react to being grant-

ed by the Israelis what no previous ruler, neither Egyptian, nor British, nor urkish, had ever given theman inde-pendent territory? First, they demolished the greenhouses.Ten they elected Hamas. Ten, instead o building a statewith its attendant political and economic institutions, theyspent the better part o a decade turning Gaza into a mas-sive military base, brimming with terror weapons, to makeceaseless war on Israel.

Tey spent millions importing and producing rockets, launchers, mortars, small arms, even drones. Tey delib-erately placed them in schools, hospitals, mosques andprivate homes to better expose their own civilians.

Why? Te rockets cant even inflict serious damage,

being almost uniormly intercepted by Israels Iron Domeantimissile system.

It makes no sense. Unless you understand, as uesdaysPosteditorial explained, that the whole point is to drawIsraeli counterfire.

Tis produces dead Palestinians or international televi-sion. Which is why Hamas perversely urges its own peoplenot to seek saety when Israel drops leaflets warning o animminent attack.

o deliberately wage war so that your own people canbe telegenically killed is indeed moral and tactical insanity. But it rests on a very rational premise: Palestinian casu-

alties ultimately undermine support or Israels legitimacyand right to sel-deense.In a world o such Kafaesque ethical inversions, the

depravity o Hamas begins to make sense.

    JULY 18, 20143THE TRUMPET WEEKLYMOHAMMED WESAM/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warnedFriday that the military is prepared tourther expand its offensive againstHamas militants.

Te Israel Deense Forces sent alarge orce into Gaza on Tursdayinantry, tanks, artillery, combat engi-neers and intelligence units backed by

aerial and naval support.Teir primary target: unnels used

by Hamas fighters and others to slipinto Israel and to smuggle in weap-onry and supplies.

Netanyahu did not explain whatwould spark a wider offensive, or whatit would entail. But he said Israel had

no choice but to take the fight to Gazato protect its own people.

We chose to commence this opera-tion aer we had exhausted the otherpossibilities, he said, and with theunderstanding that without action, the price that we would pay would bemuch greater.

D America runs the usual rerain o radicalIslamists. Tey consider America to be the great Sa-tan, Israel the little Satan. Teir leaders antasize aboutdestroying New York and overrunning Jerusalem. But theIslamic State in Iraq and Syria () has a different ocus

or the next big target in global jihad. When leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared that

thegroup had ormed a caliphateon the first day oRamadan, June , there were none o these chants. Hestill hates the Jews, and America got a brie mention, butneither were his biggest long-term target.

Rush, O Muslims, to your state, Baghdadi said. Yes, itis your state. Rush, because Syria is not or the Syrians andIraq is not or the Iraqis. Te land is or the Muslims, allthe Muslims. Tis is my advice to you. I you hold to ityou willconquer Romeand own the world,i Allah wills(emphasis added).

Ten, around a week ago, debuted its slick, sleek,

proessional-looking magazine, Dabiq.Once again, itsocus was not on taking down America, but demonstratedthat s whole philosophy revolves around war withEurope and Rome.

According to the groups prophetic texts, Dabiq is thelocation o a pivotal battle in northern Syria between Islamand Europe. Te magazines first article describes how theRomans will land near Dabiq. An army o Muslims romMedina will deeat these Romans, the article says, Tenthey will conquer Constantinople (now Istanbul, the or-mer capital o urkey). In the ensuing struggle, the articlestates, Jesus will descend rom heaven and lead the Islamic

armies to victory.According to the hadith[tradition], the area [o Dabiq]will play a historical role in the battles leading up to theconquests o Constantinople, then Rome, the article reads.

Te rest o the magazine explains why Muslims mustsubmit unconditionally to Baghdadi and rebel againstother authority, and it explains the necessity o ounding acaliphate. Te caliphate, it says, is just one step on the roadto this conrontation with the armies o Europe. May Al-lah protect this caliphate state and continue guiding it untilits legions fight the crusader armies who will gather nearDabiq, concludes its eature article.

Te magazine makes clear that it numbers the Ameri-

can troops in Iraq among the crusader orces. However, this is Europe-ocused language. Te crusaders came rom

Europe, spurred by the pope in Rome. Te ocus on crusad-ers is a departure rom the less specific terms like infidelsor unbelievers usually heard in radical Islamic screeds.

Ultimately, could be a mere flash in the pan. In Mali,

or example, radical Islamists made stunning conquestsonly to crumble once they gained the worlds attention. Butradical Islam will not leave the lands has taken, even ithe group is deeated. Tis ocus on Europe as an enemy willcontinue, and in adopting it, was probably reflectingthe belies already prevalent in the area. Telanguage isusing is not new; other preachers have made similar state-ments. Aer all, Rome is a center or Christianity, Islamslargest competitor religion. is simply one o the firstgroups to rise to prominence with Europe as its top ocus.

Te Bible orecasts a final clash between Europe and radi-cal Islam led by Iran. Now we see a radical Islamic group de-

claring its will to fight Europethe Romans and crusad-ers. Radical Muslims see this clash as a major part in theirversion o the end o the world and the triumph o Islam, sotheyre training fighters to attack these crusading states.

Such an attack could revolutionize Europes view oIslam and the Middle East, the same way the / attacktransormed America. Tis could bring the battle radicalIslamists hope or.

s latest propaganda displays a radical Islam that haspicked Europe as its enemy No. . Even i there is no imme-diate attack, it is a shi that is bound to have an impact.

What theyre missing is the trou-bling message the summit sends

Teir collectivepower, i applied in an isolated ashion, seems insufficient to make a lastingdifference or them and or the globaleconomy.

Texas Takes Lead toFix Border Crisis

    YAHOO NEWS | July 16

A duo o lawmakersrom the Lone Star State have

joined orces to present a exas-stylesolution to the nations border crisis.

Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, and Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat, have introduced legislation aimed ateasing whats been called a humani-tarian crisis caused by a wave o unac-companied Central American chil-dren who have flowed into the UnitedStates across the Mexican border.

Te cartels, the transnationalcriminal organizations that smugglepeople rom Central America into theUnited States, have figured out thisloophole in a law, which dealt

with human trafficking, Cornyn toldTe Fine Printin an interview.

Tis is part o their business model, exploiting this, Cornyn continued.

So, what we would do is we wouldtreat children that come rom Cen-tral America the same as we donow rom children that come in romMexico.

Te pairs new bill, known as theHumane Act, would speed up theprocess by which the undocumented

children currently stuck in legal limboin the United States would have theircases heard by a judge. Cuellar notedthat there are currently , suchchildren waiting or a judicial hearing.

It takes three to five years to havea hearing, Cuellar said. So just likewe are used in America to a speedytrial date, were going to give them aspeedy trial date so they wont have towait three to five years to present theirclaim or asylum.

Te bill, which was sharplycriticized by several Democrats andimmigrant-rights groups, calls orshortening the waiting period romyears to a matter o only seven days.

    ANGLO-AMERICA

I st century we have seen a tendency towardblurring the lines between the states o war andpeace, Russian Chie o General Staff Valery Gerasimovwrote in the Voyenno Promyshlennyy Kuryer(Military-Industrial Courier) last year.Wars are no longer declared

and, having begun, proceed according to an unamiliartemplate.

Gerasimovs article (translated by Robert Coalson o Ra-dio Free Europe and published by the clinical proessor oglobal affairs at the Center or Global Affairs at New YorkUniversity, Dr. Mark Galeotti, on his blog In MoscowsShadows) is one o several pieces written by Russian ex-perts that demonstrates Russias new thinking on warare.

Tis new warare is not a matter or soldiers alone. Intraditional thinking, you are either at war or at peace withan enemy nation. In the new Russian doctrine, i completepeace is represented by the color white and al l-out warby black, then between lies nearly an infinite number o

shades o gray.Te very rules o war have changed, Gerasimov wrote.

Te role o nonmilitary means o achieving political andstrategic goals has grown, and, in many cases, they have ex-ceeded the power o orce o weapons in their effectiveness.

Tis is exactly what we saw in Crimea and Ukraine.Russian-controlled blared out the constant messagethat the new government in Kiev was packed with Nazis.Ten Russia used special orces in disguise to take over theCrimean Peninsula, catching the West by surprise. Tisled to the rigged reerendum and eventual annexation oCrimea into Russia.

Te core o Gerasimovs message is that Russia must

use every means it can find to fight these new kinds obattle.

One o the names this new type o Russian warare hasbeen given is nonlinear war, aer a phrase one o Putinsclosest advisers, Vladislav Surkov, used in a short story he

published on March as Russia took over Crimea.Russia will continue to fight. Gas pipelines in Bulgar-

ia, a presidential visit to Austria, andfighter jets in Iraqare different parts o this war effort. Central and EasternEurope will continue to eel the pressure rom Russiaand Europe wi ll continue to respond to that pressure.Tis will linger until Europe is orced to orm a unitedront against Russia. Tat wont be easy, but it will be theonly way to deeat the divide-and-conquer tactics o Rus-sias nonlinear war.

In this way, Russias warare willcontinue to reshapeEurope in weeks and months ahead.

is that the drug cartels have a busi-ness incentive in bringing the childrenacross the U.S. border.

We can expect a blistering dollarrally, perhaps akin to the early sor the mid-s. It is ortuitous thatthe quintet o Brazil, Russia, In-dia, China and South Arica have justlaunched their billion monetaryund to deend each others currencies.

Some o them may need it. o some it eels like , whenthe Greenspan Fed ound itsel badlybehind the curve, suddenly switchingrom nonchalance in May to rate risesin June. Tey may have le it too lateagain: Te risk is a reckoning pointwhen rates rise abruptly, said JensNordvig, rom Nomura.

Yet i America is strong enough towithstand rate rises, it is ar rom clearwhat this will do to the rest o theworld. A vast wash o dollars floodedthe global financial system whenthe Fed cut rates near zero and thenbought . tri llion o bonds. Tis maynow go into reverse.

We still live in a dollarized world.

Charles de Gaulle railed against theexhorbitant privelege o U.S. dollarhegemony in the s, but remark-ably little has changed since. Te says global cross-border lending bybanks alone has risen rom trillionto trillion over the past decade,

What Fed now does arguably hasmore amplified effects than at anytime since the end o gold and thecollapse o the fixed-exchange BrettonWoods regime in . Tis is the para-dox o st century globalization.

Why the Status Quo IsUnsustainableZEROHEDGE | July 15

E the economy were growingat a aster pace, it wouldnt comeclose to offsetting the interest pay-

ments on our ever-expanding debt.I you want to know why the status

quo is unsustainable, just look at inter-est and debt. Tese are not difficult tounderstand: Debt is a loan that mustbe paid back or discharged/written offand the loss absorbed by the lender.Interest is paid on the debt to compen-sate the owner o the money or therisk o loaning it to a borrower.

Its easy to see whats happeningwith debt and the real economy :Debt is skyrocketing while real

growth is stagnant. Te status quo has only survived

this crushing expansion o debt bydropping interest rates to historic lows.

Tat means the strategy o loweringinterest rates to enable more debt hasrun out o oxygen: Rates cant dropany lower, and so they can either stayat current levels or rise.

Near-zero interest rates or banksborrowing rom the Fed doesnt meanconventional borrowers get near-zero

rates: Auto loans are around percent, credit cards are still typically per-cent to percent, garden-varietystudent loans are around percent, and conventional mortgages are about. percent to . percent or -yearfixed-rate home loans.

Tis decline in interest rates meanshouseholds can borrow more moneywhile paying the same amount ininterest. So the interest payment on a, car today is actually less thanthe payment on a , auto loan

back in .Te monthly payment on a

, home mortgage is roughlythe same as the payment at muchhigher rates on a , home loan years ago.

So dropping the interest rates hasenabled a broad-based expansion odebt across the entire economy. Noticehow debt has exploded higher in everysegment o the economy: household, finance, government, business.

Even i you drop interest rates, idebt keeps soaring the interest soonbecomes crushing. Even at historicallylow rates, the interest on ederal debtwill soon double. Tat means someother spending must be cut or taxesmust be increased to pay the higherinterest costs. Either action reduces

spending and thus growth.I rates actually normalize, i.e., riseback toward historic norms, interestpayments could triple.

Third Biggest StockBubble in U.S. HistoryMARKETWATCH | July 18

    H quick question or you.What do the ollowing years have incommon: , , , , ?

Pass the question around your o-fice. Call your money manager and askhim or her, too. Post it on your officenotice board.

Give up?Tose were the peaks o the five

massive, generational stock-marketbubbles in U.S. history. And, ac-cording to a new research report, weare back there again.

    U.S. stocks are now about

percent overvalued on certain keylong-term measures, according to re-search by financial consultant AndrewSmithers, the chairman o Smithers &Co. and one o the ew to warn aboutthe bubble o the late s at the time.

Te five dates listed at the start othis article, he says, are the only times

since , when data began beingtracked, when stocks have been percent or more overvalued accord-ing to these measures. And only twoo those bubbles and , botho which were ollowed by disastrouscrasheswere bigger than today.

Tats right: According to Smith-erss data, we are now in the thirdbiggest bubble in U.S. history.

oday Smithers argues that stockprices are first likely to go even higher, because they are being driven up-

wards by two orces. Te first is theFederal Reserves quantitative easingprogramthe policy o flinging mon-ey at the banks in the hope some o itdoesnt stick, but finds its way into thewider economy. Te second is corpo-rate buying. Under-appreciated at themoment is that the top buyers o U.S.stocks these days are the companiesthemselves. U.S. companies have beenborrowing aggressively and using themoney to buy their own stock.

I Smithers is right, what are thepossible icebergs that could comealong sooner or later and sink todaysmarket? He suggests several.

First, the Fed could be the cause asit winds down quantitative easing, apolicy on track to end this year. Asresearch by Smithers and others show,

the stock market boom since has almost exactly tracked the rapidincrease in the money supply.

Second, companies could stop bor-rowing and buying shares o their ownstock.

Te third could be a return to s-style stagflation. Smithers notes thatcontrary to what you may hear romthe bullsU.S. productivity growthhas been slowing or years, and indeedhas been tumbling recently. Suchslowing growth, Smithers notes, could

set the stage or a rise in inflation andinterest rates, or a sluggish economy.Either, in turn, could weaken stockprices and investor optimism.

military planes beore Flight MH. It also appears separat-ists took credit or the shooting online, but deleted thoseposts once it became clear the plane was a civilian airliner.Ukraine released a recording o what it claims is a phonecall between a Russian military intelligence officer anda leader o the pro-Russia separatists, in which the sepa-ratists admit to having destroyed the plane. Photos and

reports rom Western media were just starting to emergethat the separatists had control o a Bukmissile launchershortly beore the airliner was shot down.

Alternative explanations seem unlikely. Te Russianmilitary could have destroyed the plane, but it had no rea-son to. rained Russian operators seem much less likely toshoot down the plane by mistake than the amateur groupo separatists.

Some o the separatists are arguing that Ukraine, whichalso uses the Bukmissile system, shot MH down. Tat

seems even less likely. Ukraine could have mistaken it or aRussian military plane trespassing in Ukrainian territory, but the plane had just crossed hundreds o miles o Ukraini-an air space without incident. Its possible Ukraine destroyedit as a alse flag operationdeliberately attacking the planeand then blaming the separatistsbut thats a big accusa-tion, with no evidence, and would be a very risky strategy.

For now, evidence indicates inexperienced separatist fight-ers, thinking the plane was a Ukrainian military transport, shot down the airliner using either a missile system Russiagave them or one they captured rom the Ukrainian military.

In short, Russia-backed insurgents shot down a passen-ger jet.

So whats next? In , Russia shot down a Koreanairliner aer it strayed into restricted airspace. America, under then-President Ronald Reagan, delivered a firmresponse, using the outrage to gain support or stationingPershing cruise missiles in West Germany.

Tis time, early indications are that America wont domuch. In an interview or Americas Public BroadcastingService (), talk show host Charlie Rose asked ormer U.S.Secretary o State Hillary Clinton, What does the UnitedStates do i there is a clear indication that it was Russianseparatists perhaps using weapons rom Russia?

I think that the first question is what does Europe do,Mrs. Clinton replied.

I there is evidence linking Russia to this, that shouldinspire the Europeans to do much more, she added. Eu-ropeans have to be the ones to take the lead on this thereshould be outrage in European capitals. At no point inthe interview segment released online did she mention an

American response.Mrs. Clinton is no longer part o the government, but

her words undoubtedly reflect the eelings o Americascurrent leaders. Part o the reason she said Europe needsto lead the response is because it has not been as tough onRussia as America. Its another example o Americas desireto pass global leadership over to someone else.

And Mrs. Clinton is rightthis crash should shakeEurope. It could be a trigger or Europe to uniy and buildits ability to put up some serious opposition to Russia. Eveni nothing much happens in the short term, it still increasesEuropes ear o Russia.

For the first time, the conflict claimed victims whoare citizens o Western countries, over hal o them Dutchnationals, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkeviiussaid. So i beore, the conflict was seen as a local one, it hasbecome much broader in scale and can be a breaking pointin how everyone sees the situation.
