Are you looking for an effective way to promote your business? TW Mag for Strawberry Hill and TW11 for
Teddington are each distributed to over 5,000 selected homes and businesses every month.
With rates to suit all budgets – we can also help create artwork
J ANUARY is here and I hope you had a lovely break over Christmas. It is a great time to take a look ahead and get planning for 2015. As a
virgo, I have a penchant for getting out the multi-coloured pens and stationery then going crazy with plans, schedules and lovely lists. With a nice clean year ahead it is just too tempting. But experience tells me that the best laid plans mean very little unless followed up by some affirmative action. We are all familiar with unused gym membership syndrome. So my New Year’s resolution of ‘just do it!’ is simple, pithy and for some reason surprisingly difficult to achieve. I wish you luck with yours.
I hope you enjoy this edition of TW Mag and look forward to seeing you again next month.

UNCLE VANYAby Anton Chekhov,
in a version by Christopher Hamptondirected by Stephen Oliver
Uncle Vanya is arguably the first great modernist drama, full of ambiguities and contradictions,
delicately balancing the tragic and the absurd, the farcical and the hauntingly poetic.
The adaptation is by Oscar-winning playwright Christopher Hampton. It has is a series of
ludicrously bungled attempts at murder and suicide and adultery. Perhaps these failures are
what makes it feel the saddest and most truthful of Chekhov’s great tragi-comic masterpieces.

THE FACE OF NEWLAND House School will be transformed in summer 2016 when it opens
the doors to a new and highly sustainable Pre-Prep school on the site immediately next door to the Prep (main) School on Waldegrave Park.
Newland House has delivered education to
children from 4 to 13 years old from local families
for more than 100 years and the main school has
occupied the present site since 1945. However,
the Pre-Prep is currently located on a detached
site in an adapted Victorian property at the
end of Waldegrave Park. Its relocation next to
the main school, will unite the two parts of the
school for the first time in more than 40 years.
The new purpose-built premises will also allow
the school to offer additional places in Reception
from September 2016 onwards.
The new school will be created with a carbon
neutral footprint. The school is located in a
residential area so the design will compliment
the neighbouring architecture whilst integrating
contemporary materials that utilises the
latest technology.
The Pre-Prep will provide an ergonomic and
sustainable teaching environment with key
design features that include:
• Sustainable building design, construction
and operation
• Maximised outside play space.
• Bespoke and flexible resource rooms for art,
music and educational support.
• A state of the art library with access to a
library garden.

Wednesday 7th – Sunday 18th JanuaryLandmark Show – Adrian Fordham: The Colour of Money9.30am – 3pm weekdays; 11am – 3pm weekends.
Oil paintings inspired by coins depicting
warriors, gods and goddesses from ancient
Greece and Rome, India, Afghanistan and Europe.
Coin designs were often re-interpreted and re-
used giving them an abstract quality, reflected
in the artist’s bold approach to colour and form.
Adrian Fordham grew up in Teddington and
began collecting ancient artefacts as a boy from
local dealers. This exhibition marks his return,
presenting The Colour of Money for the very
first time in his hometown.

25th – 31st JanuaryEquus by Peter ShafferSunday 4pm, evenings 7.45pm
For its first major production in 2015, TTC is
staging Peter Shaffer’s controversial play Equus.
This explosive drama took critics and audiences
by storm when it was first staged in 1973, and
rapidly became a world-wide sensation. With its
onstage nudity and its unflinching exploration
of violence and psycho-sexual
themes, it still retains the
power to shock us today.
Yet now, Equus also enjoys
the status of a contemporary
classic.
Essentially a psychological
thriller, the play tells, in flashback, the story of
a disturbed youth, whose dangerous obsession
with horses leads him to blind six of them with
a metal spike. A psychiatrist, Martin Dysart,
struggles to understand the motivation for
Alan’s brutality, but is increasingly drawn into
Alan’s web and eventually questions his
own sanity.

Councillor’s Update
parking stress. When you multiply that by four or five nearby developments you have a worrying trend.
Many areas of the borough are very densely parked. In my own ward I have walked along some congested streets with a Senior Transport Officer searching for additional parking spaces. I am hoping that the few we have found will tip the balance and make it easier to park when you get home at night.
If you think that there are spaces that could be found in your street please get in touch with me and I will have them looked at. I make no promises but it might be possible to find some.
Finally, can I thank those of you who have been in touch with me about the proposed Pontoon at Radnor Gardens. This would allow a ferry to take pedestrians and their bicycles across to the beautifully spacious Ham Lands. So far all responses have been positive. In the New Year our Pontoon sub-committee will be producing a feasibility study. Please email me on [email protected] or ring me on 077 349 589 88 but not before 9am (especially on a Sunday!) if you have an opinion about this or have an expertise that we could use on our Pontoon Sub-Committee.
David Marlow and David Porter, my fellow South Twickenham councillors, join me in wishing you a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
NOT ALL COUNCILLORS want to be on the Planning Committee! Some committee
meetings can be long – I have left the Salon after midnight having started at 7pm. But some applications can be interesting and the arguments for and against absorbing.
There is a huge need for housing in London especially affordable housing (AH for short) but land prices are so high in the capital that even AH is beyond the financial reach of many. Usually, when an application for a development over 10 units is proposed the developer is asked to try and provide at least 50% AH. However, this has changed.
The amendment to the 1995 Town and Country Planning Act (which became law in May 2013 and will last till May 2016) sought to alleviate the housing problem by allowing office blocks to become housing with only three aspects of the application which could be challenged.
These were:- • Whether the land was contaminated (having
been used say, as a garage or a dangerous industrial use).
• Whether the land was liable to flood easily.• Whether there were traffic and transport
implications. Those of you who have not nodded off will have noticed that the AH requirement has vanished!
Normally when office blocks applied for a change of use to housing we could insist on AH being provided. Not sadly with the new amendment. The Leader of Richmond Council argued in Parliament that our borough was a special case and should not be subjected to this new law. Unfortunately, he was turned down.
So a fifth of all housing applications since May 2013 have taken advantage of this new amendment. Residents are finding that five or six businesses in their neighbourhood are applying to change from office or business use to housing. Even a small development can increase the need for parking beyond what is known as maximum

SINCE ITS beginning in 2013, the Strawberry Hill Dining Club has attracted
a stellar line-up of speakers to its events. 2015 will be just as impressive, as we prepare to welcome Lord Waldegrave at the first Club evening on Thursday 12th February 2015.
Lord Waldegrave, one of Lady Waldegrave’s descendants, who inherited the house in 1797 after Horace Walpole’s death, will enlighten the Dining Club’s members on a historical figure, Maria Walpole – Countess Waldegrave and Duchess of Gloucester. The beautiful but illegitimate daughter of Sir Edward Walpole, Maria first married the 2nd Earl Waldegrave and then William Henry, 1st Duke of Gloucester, younger brother of George III who disapproved of their marriage.
Lord Waldegrave has had a distinguished career in Government and Industry. Member of Parliament for Bristol West, he also occupied significant ministerial appointments, including the position of Secretary of State for HM Treasury. Formerly Trustee of the Strawberry Hill Trust and now Provost of Eton College, Lord Waldegrave has long demonstrated an acute interest for Strawberry Hill and has greatly supported its extensive restoration.
The Strawberry Hill Dining Club offers guests the opportunity to be involved in the preservation of Horace Walpole’s Gothic castle, all while enjoying a ‘fine dining experience’ in one of the picturesque rooms of the house. These stimulating evenings are sponsored jointly by St Margaret’s based companies, Tenant Finder letting agents and McGeachie Medd estate agents. Funds raised

are put towards the Strawberry Hill Peacock Appeal which was established to help safeguard the long term maintenance of the house and garden, the continuation of the community and learning programme and to fund the return to the house of some of Horace Walpole’s treasures.
Visit www.strawberryhillhouse.org.uk/diningclub for further information on becoming a member of the Dining Club or book tickets for one of the events.
