wikkeling in die Bellville-Velodrome verle-

drome s volgepak dat baie mense agter in

die vertrek moes staan.

Charles Rudman, distriksbestuurder van

die Stad Kaapstad se beplanningsafdeling

van die noordelike distrik, het op n groot-

skerm n voorlegging probeer gee oor die be-

plande 11 000m-ontwikkeling endie voorde-

le wat hotelle en n winkelsentrum vir Ho-

heizen en omliggende gebiede inhou. Hy is

nie veel van n kans gegun deur die ontstelde

inwoners nie.

Mispelstraat

Volgens planne sal die strate Uys Krige,

Carl Cronj en Bill Bezuidenhout na drie-

baanpaaie in albei rigtings verander word.

Mispelstraat sal direk loop na dieVelodro-

me-ontwikkeling bekend as die Galleria-

ontwikkeling. Fase een van die pad is net

minder as twee kilometer lank en sal tussen

nege en twaalf maande neem om te voltooi.

In reaksie het n inwoner ges die gebied

het nie die kapasiteit vir s n ontwikkeling

nie. Julle gaan ons eiendomswaarde ver-

nietig, het die inwoner ges. As daar n

dubbelpad deurkom, het julle dit klaar ge-

doen, het hy ges.

Die TygerBurger het onlangs berig dat as

met die pad voortgegaan sou word, dit deur

Loevenstein, dieAlta duToit-sentrumendie

Universiteit van Stellenbosch se Bellville-

kampus sou loop.

ses maande gelede n huis in die gebied ge-

koop. As ek nou vir iemand s daar gaan

n dubbelpad bymyhuis verbyloop, gaanmy

eiendomswaarde met n halfmiljoen rand

val. Gaan julle dit regstel? Nee, julle gaan

bly steel! het hy ges. Nog n inwoner wou

by die amptenare by die vergadering weet

of hulle in Hoheizen woon.

n Ander inwoner het ges vooruitgang

word bewerkstellig ten koste van inwoners.

Amptenare het by die vergadering aange-

dui n openbare deelnameproses was nie no-

dig in di verband nie.

Western Cape youth had the oppor-

tunity to express themselves on

YouthDay, 16 June, during an event

entitled Unconferencing at Bel-

lville Velodrome.

We as government will be listen-

ing to them, so that what comes out

their mouths can be used to direct

and give effect to the youth strategy

we are rolling out in the Western

Cape, said Albert Fritz, provincial

Minister of Social Development.

He said 16 June has traditionally

been associated with dialogues, dis-

cussions, conferences, or engage-

ments with young people.

Government gathered them to

talk about their plans to make life

better for future leaders.

With the assistance of over 100 fa-

cilitators, the youth were afforded

the opportunity to express them-

selves on issues that impact their

lives, while government was listen-

ing.

Fritz said for too long, govern-

ments have been making plans for

the youth, developing programmes

and even making some services

free.

Yet many young people are not

accessing government pro-

grammes, some have no knowledge

of it, while othersmay be downright

opposed to it.

Fritz said hewanted to know from

people: whether they know about

the opportunities this government

extends to them; how they are ac-

cessing it; why they may not be ac-

cessing it; what would make them

respond favourably; and what hin-

ders their access?

I want to make sure what we are

rolling out for young people to ac-

cess, really is in line with their

needs and interests, Fritz said.

Cape Design Capital fever

Local initiativeswill benefit fromtheglobal

spotlight in 2014, when Cape Town serves

as the World Design Capital (WDC).

Richard Perez, 2014 WDC director, said

the WDC aims to exemplify and honour cit-

ies that have recognised the importance of

design as a leading development tool.

He spoke at the Table Mountain Cable-

way premises last week, when Andrea

Crous, Ward 70 councillor and residents

visited the cableway as part of an informa-

tive session about the WDC.

TheWorldDesignCapital title is awarded

in advance, allowing winning cities suffi-

cient time to plan, develop and promote a

year-long programme of World Design Cap-

ital-themed events for their designated

year.

This title gives Cape Town a chance to

showcase its achievements and aspirations

of design-led events and activities.

A public call for potential World Design

Capital 2014 projects was made at the end

of February that

focus on projects

that highlight

how design can

be used to trans-

form lives. On

the WDC web-

site, it states

that although

projects will not

necessarily be

funded, success-

ful projects will benefit from being promot-

ed extensively by Cape Town Design, both

at home and abroad, under the prestigious

World Design Capital 2014 banner.

Richard said one of the aims is to promote

and encourage the use of design, to further

social, economic and cultural development

of the worlds cities.

As a result, we expect to attract invest-

ment, stimulate new partnerships and gain

visibility as a centre for creativity and inno-

vation. We want to improve the quality of

life in the city, Perez said.

According to Perez, a big element of the

WDC is legacy.

It is about communicating designs to cit-

izens, using design principals and design

networks, said Richard.

He said 20 years into democracy a divide

still exists in the city.

Can design help us close that divide? he

asked.

Sabrine Lehmann, CEO of Cape TownCa-

bleway, spoke about this popular tourist at-

traction.

She said it was an average day at the ca-

bleway. On a windy day zero people will

go up the mountain and on other days 7 000

people will go up, she said.

In 2012, a total of 831 000 went on the ca-

bleway, said Sabrine.

We are currently looking at sites from

where Table Mountain can be framed in a

photo, for the WDC, said Sabrine.

Frames will be erected at various loca-

tions, for people to take photos of them-

selves, with the mountain in the back-

ground.

Nombulelo Mfeka, City of Cape Towns

tourism director, said tourism was a gold

mine in terms of economy for the city.

The purpose of the City of Cape Towns

Transport Authority for Cape Town (TCT) is

that all transport systems are managed by

one authority.

So said Gershwin Fortune (manager: Inte-

grated Rapid Transit System Planning and

Modelling transport for Cape Town) during

ameeting of the Boston Business Link at the

Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre last week.

Business link meetings serve as a network-

ing platform for businesspeople in the area.

Gershwin, a civil engineer, was involved

when the MyCiTi system was born in 2007.

At the end of May this year, council ap-

proved the TCT for Cape Town.

Since 2007 the city has been working on the

first phase of an Integrated Rapid Transit

(IRT) system in Cape Town, aimed at signifi-

cantly improvingpublic transport in theCity.

The first leg of this IRT system is the dedicat-

ed work on the MyCiTi IRT system.

The first phase includes the inner city

of which Milnerton, Montague Gardens,

Century City, Du Noon, Table View,Melk-

bos and Atlantis are part.

It includes the rapidly growing residen-

tial areas in Blaauwberg, north of the Diep

River, and the low-income communities of

Atlantis, Mamre, Du Noon and Doorn-

bach.

This corridor faces some of the worst

peak period congestion levels, especially

to the south and east of the bridges over

the Diep River.

While this first leg is primarily a Bus

Rapid Transit system, it is designed in a

way that emphasises the need for integra-

tion with other modes, especially rail, the

backbone of public transport in Cape

Town.

Among the modes to be integrated are

Metrorail services, road-based services on

trunk routes, conventional bus services,

minibus taxi integration, feeder bus servic-

es, improved pedestrian and bicycle access,

metered taxi integration and park-and-ride

facilities.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-quality

bus-based transit system that delivers fast,

comfortable, and cost-effective urbanmobil-

ity with segregated right-of-way infrastruc-

ture, rapid and frequent operations

Gershwin said BRT is an integrated net-

work of routes consisting of trunks and feed-

er services. He said public transport across

allmodes should be a seamless, safe and reli-

able experience.

Key interventions for rail in the next few

years include high frequency peak hour

services, express services, increased off

peak frequencies and capacity, new rolling

stock (in 2015), and more.

A highly corrosive substance discharged

into a sewer pipe caused a sink hole in Stik-

land recently.

Councillor Ernst Sonnenberg, mayoral

committee member for utility services said

the sewer has been corroded through the

discharge of inappropriate substances into

the sewer by industry companies.

This has caused the movement of fine

soil into the sewer, resulting in the creation

of a sink hole, he said. He said the extent

of the corrosion was being determined and

will be attended to once investigations have

been concluded.

Ernst said it was difficult to assess when

this occurred or over what period of time,

as it depends essentially on the corrosive-

ness of the substance and any subsequent

dilution by the normal wastewater.

The sink hole was brought to TygerBurg-

ers attention by Bellville resident Mouton

van Zyl, who described the hole as 1x1 me-

tre in size and a big danger to motorists.

Ernst said a camera inspection will be

done to determine the condition of the pipe

and the appropriate method of repair.

He said the intention is to replace the sec-

tion of sewer pipeline over the full width of

the road reserve frommanhole tomanhole.

If required, it could be done as an emer-

gency project, alternatively it will be done

as a project in this financial year, said

Ernst.

He said some sections of the line have

been replaced and the objective of the cur-

rent investigations is to determine if fur-

ther repairs/replacements are needed.

in Soweto met protesoptogte na die

Orlando-stadion begin teen n regerings-

besluit dat Afrikaans die voertaal in

skole word.

Teen die einde van 16 Junie 1976 het 23

mense hul lewens verloor. Hieronder was

die 13-jarige Hector Peterson, wat die

simbool van die dag geword het nadat n
