espite the authorities claim that it

complies with all the legal require-

    ments, driving instructors inBracken-

fell deem the new Driving Licence Testing

Centre (DLTC) a waste of taxpayers money

and a white elephant they would rather

    not use.

Pieter Jooste from Omega Driving School

is only one of many local driving school in-

structors, who considers the new test-track,

which was completed only two weeks ago,

    inadequate.

According tohim, the incline onwhich the

track is built is too steep, resulting in stu-

    dents often being unfairly penalised.

When doing the practical for the K53, the

slightest roll back of the vehicle fails the stu-

dent. Many students who reside in Bracken-

fell, dont evenwant to do their test here and

we refer them to Parow or Bellvilles tracks.

    Level

The old track was known throughout the

city as the track with the steepest incline.

When it had to make place for the new elec-

trical training centre and the City started

building the new track, we requested a level

track and was assured that it would be, he

    says.

As they were building it we told engi-

neers that it was not level and they kept on

reassuring us that it would be level and the

incline we were seeing was only an illu-

    sion, Jooste continues.

    Yet, when completed the newDLTC,meas-

ured an incline of about 3 %, according to

what City engineers told Jooste. But when

Jooste hired a landmeter to do an independ-

entmeasure it measured an average of 4,8 %

of an incline and at places even more than

    the 5 % statutory limit.

What angersmemost is the fact that they

did not level the land while they built the

track. They should have lifted it just oneme-

tre on the left side. Why did they not do it?

I have to wonder if they tried to take short

cuts to save costs andarenow trying to cover

    it up?

Another unahappy resident and driving in-

structor, Fanie Malan refers to the new

track as a obstacle course and said only

a driver with many years experience will

pass the K53 on this track.

Roleplayers such as ourselves were not

consulted when the new track were planned

    and built,Malan says.

Spokesperson for Traffic Services of the

City of Cape Town Merle Lourens, confir-

med that th DLTC met all the necessary re-

quirements of regulation of the National Ro-

    ad Safety Act.

A consulting engineer contracted by the

city certified that the incline start has an ac-

tual slope of 1:10,68, which falls within the

    minimumgradient of 1:15 and themaximum

    gradient of 1:10 guideline.

Furthermore, the track was graded a pro-

vincial official and found to comply with the

minimum requirements of regulation 92 of

    the National Road Traffic Act.

Past statistics show that more than 50% of

drivers failed at the old track, whereas this

percentile is lower at other tracks such as

    Bellville and Goodwood.

But Lourens says that the failure rate can-

not be ascribed only to the surface slope of

the DLTC as there aremany reasons why an

applicant could fail a driving test.

Jooste, however is adamant, and point out

a wall of sand, neatly packed at the bottom

    of the downward slope.

They probably put the sand here to pre-

    vent stormwater from flushing through

their offices during the rainy season.

If the trackwas built correctly in the first

place, then the water would naturally have

flown down towards the street, and away

    he says.

Lourens denied this saying that the sand

wasmerely dumped there because the servi-

ce provider is busy levelling the outer peri-

    meter of the surroundings.

    The new track.

    DESIRE RORKE

A farming empowerment project in Kraai-

fontein has become a beacon of hope for a

group of formerly unemployed people in

    Wallacedene.

While the project is set to fight the abject

poverty that exists in this township, it also

serves to be a pilot for what can become a

new economic order of land demands in the

    Western Cape.

    OnMonday theminister for agriculture in

the Western Cape, Gerrit van Rensburg, ac-

    companied ward councillors and members

of parliament to the farm for a site visit to

listen to the story of the project first-hand.

Four years ago Wiseman Bozene, desper-

ate and without an income, approached

farmer Alfred Borchard on the neighbour-

    ing farm Avondrust.

Wiseman and a small group of people

wanted land from me to start farming on, a

vision I could clearly share on condition that

the land remained productive, says Bor-

chard. Realising the long-term benefits he

agreed, provided that Wiseman and his

group worked the land with the aim to be

trained as commercial farmers under his

    mentorship.

Instead of subsistence farming, I opted

for commercial farming in order to strength-

en the food supply chain in the Western

Cape, while giving these people an opportu-

nity to make a living off the land, he said.

Albeit that the group of prospective farm-

ers had no experience and skills in agricul-

ture, Borchard made a few hectares of land

available to them at no cost.

Soon the first group got themselves organ-

ised, obtained funding from the provincial

government and inMarch last year, the first

    crops of vegetables were planted.

The profits of the first crops were small

but important lessons were learned. I reali-

sed that much training was still needed,

said Borchert who continued to provide

mentorship to the group and often pulled his

    own purse strings to help.

The second crop is now ready and seemin-

gly things are looking up, with a few more

    immediate challenges to overcome.

Meanwhile, a second group of farmers ha-

ve organised, registered and are now ready

    to start farming.

I have seen the willingness of these far-

mers to succeed and the responsibility taken

    for the land.

Now we can work on our long term plan

of turning the group into succesfu commer-

    cial farmers, says Borchard.

According to him, theft and vandalism by

    residents of the neighbouring Wallacedene

is currently the biggest threat to the project.

If we can get the community to buy into

the project and findways to secure the crops,

the project will succeed and if it does, I will

allocate more land for farming, he said.

This is the beginning of a success story,

    said Van Rensburg.

Die stuk grond waarop die nuwe Bracken-

    fell-boulevard-skakelpad eersdaags gebou

Vredekoofhoogte woon.

    wou n inwoner weet.

Alhoewel almal eens is dat inwoners in

Brackenfell- Noordwl sal baat by die nuwe

    maak.

    Volgens Herron is n verkeersimpakstu-

Are you a future innovator, ready to

stun the world with a groundbreaking

    new invention?

On the heels of International Inno-

    tional technology company 3M are

calling on Western Cape Grade 10

    learners to enter the 2013 HIP2B 3M

    Backed by the eduction department

    Minister of Science and Technology,

the challenge is the brainchild of

HIP2B and 3M, designed to inspire in-

HIP2B is the non-profit youth or-

    The innovation challenge starts

vited to enter, in teams of two, their

The glamourous Carina Bruwer, lead player

    of Sama award-winning instrumental pop

group Sterling EQ, last week took a plunge

into icy cold, shark investedwaters to do her

    bit for the community.

Equipped only with a standard swimming

costume, cap and goggles, according to open

water swimming rules, she rounded Cape

Point in an 8 km extreme swim.

Starting at Dias Beach on thewestern side

of the point and ending at Buffels Bay in the

east, not even icy water temperatures be-

tween 11,5 and 14 degrees could stop this

    headstrong virtuoso.

The Swim forHopewas in support of the

Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT), a

Kraaifontein charity that offers support to

children with cancer and their families.

    The occasion alsomarked Carinas return

to open water swimming after a six-year

break during which she became a mother of

    two.

According to Carina, the swim was a

tricky endeavour with her having to evade

jellyfish and fight severe currents as she

    passed the point.

She completed the swim in two hours and

36 minutes, 16 minutes slower than the

record she set for the swim in 2004.

It was extremely tough, but Im very hap-

py with the result. Even while at the prime

of my marathon swimming career, I would

not normally have swum in waters under 13

degrees. LFCT and the children with cancer

it supports were instrumental in this swim.

They inspired me to stay strong and really

fight the odds. I had to push through the ex-

treme conditions for only two and a half

hours, as opposed to the challenges and trau-

ma they face on a daily basis, Carina said

at Buffels Bay after the swim.

    Mandie Erasmus from Little Fighters,

who was part of the team on the support

boat, said: She fought tides, survived se-

vere water temperatures and even managed

to make it through the fishing nets of cray-

fish poachers. We cannot express the grati-

tude we feel after witnessing her in action

    today.

Carina and The Little Fighters Cancer

Trust are hoping to raise R25 000 for the Bag

    of Hope Project.

The Little Fighters Cancer Trust supports

children diagnosed with cancer and their

families, by offering a wide variety of indi-

    vidualised assistance, including the provi-

sion of food and groceries, transport, cloth-

    ing, furnishings, bedding, medication, and

    24 hour emotional support.

Parents of diagnosed children often lose

or leave their jobs to be able to provide the

special care and support required, which, to-

gether with the huge emotional strain of

having a terminally sick child, often disa-

bles the family financially and emotionally.

Little Fighters steps in to help create a

support system in order for the children and

their families to maintain their dignity, and

with it, provide hope, says Erasmus.

    Promoting and advocating childhood can-

cer Awareness is another of Little Fighters

    Cancer Trusts priorities.

Childhood Cancer is responsible for more

child deaths thanHIV/Aids, malaria and tu-

berculosis combined, according to the South

    African Tumour Registry, 2011.

Less than one third of actual childhood

cancer cases are recorded in South Africa.

Many children are misdiagnosed or not di-

agnosed at all due to a lack of awareness con-

cerning the early warning signs of child-

    hood cancer.

Reading extraordinarily well is not the only

thing the nine winners of the Eikendal li-

brarys junior reading competition have in

common. They are also pegged for success,

as they realised along with all the entrants

that reading is indeed the key to achieve-

    ment.

The competition is an initiative of theCity

of Cape town, to instil in primary school

learners the desire to read and then reward

    them for their endeavours.

Seven schools in Kraaifontein entered 28

learners in the three categories, English, Af-

rikaans and Xhosa. At the library they were

given short stories to read and coached by

senior librarian Veniwe Robo in the finer

    nuances of reading.

    Even ward councillors Marian Nieu-

woudt, Brenda Hansen and Grant Twigg did

their part by reading stories in the various

languages to the children on the day of the

    competition.

    Says head librarianVeniweRobo after the

prizegiving on Wednesday: I am so im-

pressed by all these learners. When they

came in for the first rehearsals they were

good readers, but now they are excellent!

One can really see that they took to heart

everything they were taught, she said add-

ing that she really believes that this project

    will be repeated next year.

Judges, Hazel Gelant a local community

activist and holder of a Civic honours

award, Bronwyn Mogapi and Rone Roos-

berg, librarians at Ravensmead and Brack-

enfell libraries were stunned by the chil-

    drens efforts.

Its no small wonder we deliberated for so

long. It was very hard to choose the win-

    ners! Mogapi said.

The children were judged by body lan-

guage, eye contact, facial expressions, voice

    intonation and accuracy.

The nine winners all received prizes from

the city and will go forth to take part in a

    fter receiving numerous complaints

    over the past fewweeks,TygerBurger

came to the conclusion that the

number of people parking in disabled park-

ing bays without the required permits

seems to upset locals and disabled people

    alike.

This has been an ongoing problem but

prominent shoppingmalls in the area claim

they are dealing with the issue.

    TygerBurger recently received a com-

plaint about an incident at the DeVille

    ShoppingCentre inDurbanville fromSanet

Mulder. Sanet took a photo of a black BMW

parked across both the disabled and par-

    ents parkingbays. I asked thewomanwhy

she parked there and across both the spe-

cial parking lots. She then raised her voice

and said I was only five minutes; thats

why I parked here, explains Sanet. The

woman then allegedly verbally abused San-

et in front of her young girl and Sanets ba-

    by, scaring Sanet.

    Police hide

    Another reader sentTygerBurger a photo

of a police vehicle parked in a loading bay

at N1 City Mall. The lady in the passenger

seat (of the police vehicle) tried her best to

hide when the photograph was taken, ex-

    plainsVernonWucherpfennigwho took the

    photo of the police vehicle.

Needless to say, disabled people them-

selves are also upset by this flippant behav-

iour. It aggravates and upsets me, com-

ments a disabled Edgemead resident on the

illegal parkers. It all comes down to re-

spect and what theyre saying to disabled

people is that they simply dont respect us.

    Another Goodwood resident said: Peo-

ple shouldnt judge. Not everyone who

needs to park in a disabled parking space

is disabled. I have a heart condition and

cant walk far distances without having an

angina attack. People dont realise how im-

portant that closer bay is to me.

It is inconsiderate and disrespectful to-

wards us, a disabled shopper from Canal

Walk told TygerBurger, The bays are de-

signed to be larger to make it easier to get

in and out of our cars without knocking

    someone elses car.

    When asked, shopping centres admitted

    to receiving complaints from customers

    about illegal parkings. Vanessa Herbst

from Canal Walk explained that they have

security and parking staff monitoring their

special bays on a daily basis. We are in the

process of investigating ways to improve

and enhance the disabled, parents and

    aged parking, added Vanessa.

    Security

Shopping centres such as Parow Centre

are trying tomake the illegal parkings their

    main concern. Operations manager Fran-

cois van der Merwe told TygerBurger that

due to the complaints received, we have a

new security company and are making

    these parkings our priority.

    Acar guardat aBothasig shopping centre

felt it necessary to comment on the issue to

TygerBurger after seeing the disruptions of

these illegal parkings. People think that

its okay to park in disabled parking spaces

if theyre just going to be in the shops for

two minutes, he explains, it just makes

    trouble.

Ek reageer op die briewe en

    SMSe van doodstrafgesindes.

    Daar is absoluut niks goeds

te s van iets so afskuwelik

    soos die doodstraf nie. Daarom

    het Christus slf dit ook

    verwerp.

    Doodstraf kan tog nie werk

    sonder vrees, haat, vergelding

    en onvergewensgesindheid nie

    almal doodsondes. Enige

    regdenkende mens kan dit

    verstaan.

    My teenkanting is eerstens

    gegrond op Christus se duideli-

    ke lering, en tweedens die

    wreldwye neiging om dood-

    straf af te skaf.

Meer as die helfte van die 194

    lande waaruit die Verenigde

    Nasies (VN) bestaan, het dit

    reeds afgeskaf Nederland so

ver terug as 1870, Brittanje in

    1965, Frankryk in 1989 en

    Suid-Afrika in 1995. Daarom is

    die wreld se vooruitstrewend-

ste lande juis di lande wat hul

    rug daarop gedraai het.

    Geen land kan mense meer

    na willekeur teregstel nie, nie

    eers die wreld se grootste

    boelies soos Amerika en China

    nie.

    Doodstrafgesindes moet s

hoe hulle jaarliks 18 000 moor-

    denaars doodmaak, wat nie

    eens verkragters en padmoorde-

    naars soos dronkbestuurders

insluit nie. Moet ons ook nou

    soos die bendes mekaar Sondag-

    middae stenig en uitmoor?

    Doodstraf is n Middeleeuse

    afskuwelikheid, wat ons brose

    land gespaar moet bly.

    Daar bestaan nrens enige

    wetenskaplike of empiriese

    bewys dat doodstraf hoege-

    naamd n titsel afskrikwaarde

    het nie.

    Mense wat sulke onwaarhede

    versprei, moet met hul bewy-

    se vorendag kom.

Dis ook n mite dat dit enige

    sogenaamde berusting

    teweegbring.

The sale of drugs is a call for

    concern, particularly in the

    Western Cape and South Africa.

    This in part, has generated

    many questions and quick

    responses have been that those

    involved want to make quick

money, as a result of a huge

    profit margin.

    Drugs commonly sold in

    South Africa are cocaine,

    heroin, Ecstasy, marijuana and

Quaaludes. Why is it so easy to

get a dose of these drugs with

relative ease, in spite of ade-

    quate security measures the

    government has put into place.

Are these drugs from within or

imported? Who is to be blamed,

    the government? Are the ports

of entry this country so vulnera-

ble? The law is flexible to those

who are engaged in this line of

trade. The execution of a South

    African lady who was caught

    enough warning to them and

    meant nothing to the authority.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Probleem l

    by geweld wat

    cool is

Die afgelope paar weke is daar n warm

    debat in TygerBurger se brieweblad

gevoer rondom die kwessie van doodstraf.

Aan die een kant het die voorstanders

beweer misdaad is wel laer in lande waar

Daar

waar n gesin kinders moet koester, n

skool verder moet opvoed, maar ook waar

n samelewing moet ondersteun en liefh.

    Geweld is vandag heeltemal aanvaar-

baar. In elke liewe fliek of TV-produksie

ry. Luister na musiek, kyk na rekenaar-

speletjies, lees boeke, sien net hoe

    harder en gewelddadiger sport geword

het. Hoe meer goed en mense opge-

blaas en weggeskiet word, hoe meer bloed

spuit en borrel, hoe beter. Dis vermaak-

lik. Geweld is cool.

    want to make the following

    suggestions;

    The court should not grant

    bail application to suspects who

    are involved in drug business.

The sale of drugs goes togeth-

    er with prostitution. Prostitu-

    tion should be made completely

    illegal.

    The community should help

    alert Law Enforcement officers

    about the premises where drug

    business is taking place.

If all the drug dealers are sent

to jail, our country will become

    less violent. Our children will

    concentrate more in school.

    Money that was spent on

buying drugs will be put for

    better use. Rape, women and

    child abuse issues will be

reduced. There will be no street

kids. If the above remedies are

    ence peace.

    Above all, policy makers have

to save the nation from getting

    DESIRE RORKE

Some 14 local policemen will again this year

sweat it out on twowheels to help create bet-

ter lives for those children left behind when

    policemen are slain.

    For the secondconsecutiveyear, this cycle

tour initiated by the Brackenfell police sta-

tion, will aim to raisemuch-needed funds for

    the SAPS Education Trust.

    The education trustwas established inOc-

tober 2010 to enable children of police mem-

bers, who died in the line of duty, to apply

for financial assistance in order to further

    their education.

The trust is accessible for families of po-

lice members from the ranks of constable to

    warrant officer.

This initiative from Ministry and Na-

tional Head Office really touched a chord

with the members, prompting them to start

the cycle tour. The reality is that at any giv-

en time one of their families might be affect-

ed by such a loss and they need to make use

    of this trust,saysW/OEricaCrous from the

    Brackenfell police station.

The first cycle tour was held during May

    2012 and a total of R40 000 was raised.

This year we aim to raise much more,

with the assistance of stations on our cycle

route and the generosity of the communi-

    ties, she says.

Accompanied by six civilians and a sup-

port team, the 14 police officers from Brack-

    enfell, Kraaifontein, Bellville and Khayelit-

sha police stations, will take to the road on

    8 May to complete a gruelling seven-day,

605 km route through the northern suburbs

of Cape Town and the Boland.

Starting at Bellville on 8 May, they will

stop at police stations in Goodwood, Both-

asig and Durbanville, before departing for

    Klapmuts, Groot Drakenstein, Franshhoek

    and Villiersdorp.

The route will then follow through to

    Bredasdorp, Swellendam and Caledon and

    return through Somerset West, Macassar,

    Strandfontein,Khayelitsha,Mitchells Plain,

Mfuleni and Kuils River, to end in Bracken-

    fell on 14 May.

Fundraising concerts will be held on

route, but the fourth and final concert of the

tour will take place on Wednesday, 22 May

at Brackenfell Primary School at 19:00

The format of the evening will be Oor die

kole aand met Kobus Wiese with perform-

ances by Hugo Nieuwoudt, Desmond Wells

and Waldo Lotz. Tickets prices: R80 for

adults, R40 for children under 12 years.

kaanse mense daarvan sou hou.

makliker. Ek is altyd so half verbaas as

    mense dink eks snaaks!

En wat wil die fenomenale, legendariese

Sandra Prinsloo nog in haar akteursloop-

baan doen? O, bie! Sy lag weer lekker.

Ek kan werklik s dat ek mal is oor wat

ek doen.

toe ek jonger was nie. Ek probeer om oop

te wees vir enigiets. Wie sou nou ooit kon

dink ek sal n seuntjie speel op my ouder-

dom! Partykeer moet n mens maar net

    spring.

Ek is absoluut n voorstander daar-

    kop.

V Bespreek vir Die Leos by Computicket.

    MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Die rol van Rita sou haarweer glamorous

laat lyk, het die vervaardiger en regisseur

van die toneelstuk Die Leos vir Sandra

    Prinsloo belowe.

    Sandra kort.

In haar laat sestigs wil dit voorkom of sy

nou besiger is as ooit, beter is as ooit. Sy het

pas n Fista vir haar rol as n tienjarige

    loopbaan.

By die KKNKhet sy in drie briljante stuk-

Leos genader. Toe het n groep akteurs by

Artscape bymekaar gekom en saam ge-

lees aan die stuk. Ons het verskriklik ge-

lag.

Hiervandaan was daar bitter min tyd oor

Dis baiemin tyd vir so n groot en lang stuk.

    Dis boonop n komplekse stuk.

    Dis juis ditwaarmeeSandragesukkelhet.

Ekmoes n realiteit binne hierdie absurdi-

teit skep.

So, ek moes baie lae wegkrap, maar uitein-

delik was ek mal oor Rita.

N haar man se dood, het sy haar lewe

in haar eie hande geneem en n ommekeer

    gemaak.

doen nie, was almal so ondersteunend.

    Sy onthoudie openingsaand by dieKKNK

toe hulle nie seker was of die stuk n sukses

    Sandramoes baie

    lae wegkrap vir rol

Sandra Prinsloo as Rita in Die Leo's.
