out of AbsaBankwith the intent to rob

him, were nabbed by police before

    they could strike.

    The client, whowas presumably followed

to Absa Bank at CapeGate last Tuesday

    morning, became suspiciouswhen he noted

one of the suspects outside the bank doors.

He had seen the man watching him and

noted that he was communicating some-

thing via his cellphone, says Brackenfell

    police spokesperson Warrant Officer Erica

    Crous.

It was later discovered that the accom-

    plice was in close proximity.

After leaving the bank he immediately

proceeded to a nearby restaurant where he

sat down at a table and contacted the Brack-

    enfell police.

At that stage the one suspect had fol-

lowed him into the restaurant and took a

    seat nearby, says Crous.

Minutes later, however, the suspect real-

ised that he was caught out and he and his

accomplice attempted to make a run for it.

Police and mall security were too quick

    for themand apprehended thembefore they

could leave the mall, says Crous.

One of the men was arrested after it was

found that he had a warrant of arrest

    against him from Bloemfontein police.

The other suspect was released as police

did not have enough cause to detain him,

as no crime had been committed.Incidents

    of so-called bank-followings have increased

    in recent years.

A following occurs when criminals iden-

tify people withdrawingmoney to rob them

    outside the banks premises.

They usually loiter outside the bank and

contact an accomplice by cellphone after he

identified a target. The target is then fol-

    lowed outside to be robbed.

Crous warns the public to be vigilant at

all times when visiting a bank or an ATM.

ittle abandoned baby dolls were placed

around the Shoprite centre in Kraaifon-

    tein onWednesday tomake the commu-

nity aware of child abandonment and the

    prevention thereof.

It is estimated that around 3500 babies are

abandoned each year in South Africa.

This campaign forms part of the Choose

to Care initiative that focuses on crisis preg-

nancies in a bid tomakewomen aware of the

    various alternatives for women experienc-

ing an unplanned pregnancy, says social

    worker Albie Jackson

    from Abba, a Bellville-

    based adoption and social

    services entity.

    Every year, thousands

    of women are faced with

    the unexpected news that

    they are pregnant. These

    are most often teenagers,

but could just as easily be

    a single mother of three

    O

ver 200 disabled residents could lose

their places in the Citys disabled

    transport systemafter they refused to

    undergo compulsory medical reassess-

    ments.

They feel that these assessments done by

occupational therapists and paid for by tax-

payersmoney, are a blatant public wastage

that could bebetterused addressing the real

problem, namely a shortage of buses.

If you have been blind your whole life,

and have been classified as such, why now

    be assessed?

    It makes no sense.

When we applied we were already as-

sessed. Now we have to be assessed again

and every five years thereafter. Rather use

that money to procure more sorely needed

buses, says Luwie Links from Kraaifon-

    tein.

Links, who is completely blind, is em-

    ployed at the telecommunications depart-

    ment at the Western Cape

    Government complex in

    town and has been using

    this service to commute to

    work from 2002.

He is also a member of a

    forum that is rallying the

    city for a better service

    and disputing the new reg-

    ulations.

    Millions have been

    spent and are still being

spent to roll out the MyCi-

    Ti buses across Cape

    Town, while very little is

    invested to the Dial-a-Ride

    service we as disabled peo-

    ple have become complete-

    ly dependant on, he says.

    On Thursday 28 April,

    the members of the Dial-a-

    Ride users forum, who dis-

    pute the new regulations

    which include the medical

    assessments, marched to

    the office of Helen Zille,

    premier of the Western

    Cape, where a memoran-

    dum was handed over.

    In this memorandum

    they stated that there was

    an urgent need for more

    buses for the Dial-a-Ride

    system that reduced their

    buses from 34 to 21without

    considering the impact it

    will have on daily users.

    More than half of the

    disabled commuters ar-

    rive late at work every

day. And by this I dont

mean five or ten minutes late they are

hours late, he said in an interview with

    TygerBurger.

He attributes this problem to the fact that

the fewer, albeit bigger, vehicles have to

make more trips, thus causing long delays.

They pick me up at 05:20 and from there

travel to Kuils River and then to the City.

After dropping us off at about 07:15, they

leave for Atlantis and other distant regions

to fetch a second load of commuters.

These commuters only get to work as late

    as 11:30.

When the project started in 1999 they had

    34 vehicleswhich, according toLinks, could

transport six passengers of whom three

    were in wheelchairs.

    Today, after contracting anewcompany,

they use only 21 vehicles that can transport

more people five in wheelchairs and three

others. The problem is the bus has to stop

    atmore homes causingmany commuters to

    be late, he says.

Passengers are forced to spendmore than

two hours in the bus while drivers are not

allowed to stop along the routes for passen-

    gers to use the bathroom.

Apart from this there are still thousands

of people including school children on

a waiting list, and we want to know what

the City is going to do about this?

The forumdemanded to be included in fu-

ture decision making of their transport.

Surely the input of a disabled person is

needed when making decisions that affect

    their lives?

We stated all our concerns, but to this

day it seems that we are being ignored.

Links alleges that the introduction of as-

sessments is only sidetracking fromthe real

issue a shortage of vehicles, something the

    City vehemently denies.

The Dial-a-Ride service has a limited

budget and therefore a limited capacity.

Given these constraints, the service is for

the exclusive use by those who have been

assessed by an occupational therapist as be-

ing unable to access conventional public

    transport services, says Mayco member

for transport, Brett Herron, explaining the

    reason for the compulsory reassessment

    project launched in 2014.

Wehave tomake sure that thosewho are

on the service are in fact unable tomakeuse

of regular public transport. In the end the

    Dial-a-Ride service will provide mobility

only for thosewho are assessed as not being

able to use public transport, including the

    universally accessible MyCiTi service.

    TheMyCiTi system isdesigned tobeuni-

    versally accessible thismeans theMyCiTi

service is provided for both able-bodied

commuters and those with special needs.

Stations and stops are designed for the visu-

ally impaired. As the MyCiTi service ex-

pands its footprint, bringing universally ac-

cessible public transport to more and more

people, so the total dependency on Dial-a-

Ride for mobility will be reduced and elimi-

nated for many eligible Dial-a-Ride users,

    he says.

According to Herron the service is subsi-

dised in part by the Western Cape Govern-

    ment.

Because of budget limits, funds have to

be spent as wisely and efficiently as possi-

ble, and in a way that allows us to provide

a transport service to asmany eligible users

    possible, he says.

We try, within ourmeans, to assist those

residents who cannot make use of conven-

    tional public transport services.

Herron says the majority of the current

users complied with the reassessment re-

quirement, safe for 170 people who refused

the assessment. They are part of the group

who protested against the service on Thurs-

    day 28 April.

He added they will investigate all com-

    plaints.

V DialARide users can report complaints to the

    Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63.

Complainants will be issued with a reference num

ber and will receive feedback once the complaint

    has been investigated.

Twee dinge het my dadelik opgeval toe ek

die dorp binnery. Eerstens was die strate

en sypaadjies so skoon dat dit in die

sonlig geglimmer het nie n papiertjie,

kartonhouer, bottel of Checkerssak in sig

    nie.

    Tweedens het die taxi-bestuurders so

ordentlik gery soos motors in n begraf-

    nisstoet, ook getrou by verkeersligte

gestop en nie passasiers in die middel

    van die straat afgelaai nie.

Ek het n draai deur die woonbuurte

gery. Daar was geen ho mure om die

huise nie, ook nie diefwering voor die

vensters nie. n Paar voordeure het

oopgestaan en die kinders se fietse en

speelgoed het oral op die grasperke gel.

My ingebore nuuskierigheid het my by

    die stadsklerk uitgebring, wat ooglopend

trots was op sy dorp. Hiers geen

misdaad nie. Elf jaar gelede was daar wel

n winkeldiefstal toe n pen by die

    skryfbehoeftewinkel gegaps is, maar ons

    vermoed dit was n

    besoeker aan die

    dorp. Ons polisie-

    kantoor, verkeers-

    departement en

    landdroshof het n

    dekade gelede al

    hul deure gesluit.

    Hul dienste was

    oorbodig, het hy

    vertel.

    Dit het amper te

    goed geklink om

    waar te wees!

    Ek was verbete

kinders hier sonder enige stres opgroei.

N my onderhoude was ek dors en wou

ek n koeldrank by n groot kruideniers-

    ware-winkel gaan koop. Die betaalpunte

daar was onbeman. Ekt die geld vir my

blikkie Coke in n gleuf gegooi, waarna n

elektroniese stem my beleefd bedank het.

Dit was ook opvallend hoe vriendelik

die klante in die winkel was. Hulle het

    my met bre glimlagte gegroet.

Toe ek uitstap, het ek opgemerk hul

geparkeerde karre het almal sleutels in.

Ek het wakker geskrik van die skril

geloei van my huisalarm ... en besef dit

    was net n droom.

Terwyl ek glas iewers in die huis hoor

breek het en ek die polisie naarstig op

my selfoon gebel het, het ek gewonder of

drome waar kan word. Rudie van

    Cape Town has been named

People in the Cape are very

    friendly to money spending

tourists, as long as they do not

try to settle here. The locals

    are friendly but aloof, even

This has nothing to do with

    CURE IRRESPONSIBILITY

    De Bron

    Rules of the road:

    punish transgressors

    Dit is vir my betreurenswaar-

    dig hoe daar vandag leuens

vertel word. Die kinders is nog

    klein, maar vertel al leuens.

Ek het my les al kleintyd

    geleer: vertel die waarheid, al

kom daar n straf. Een of ander

tyd sal die waarheid uitkom en

dan is die straf groter. Leer die

kinders dalk by hul die ouers

    om leuens te vertel?

Dit is vir my so sleg dat een

    van ons gewildste sepies die

mense so leer om te jok. Is

    hierdie sepie nie n gesinspro-

gram nie? Ek kyk nie meer

daarna nie, want dit druis in

    teen my geloof en Bybelse

    waardes. Dan hoor jy soveel

male: ag, dit is net n wit

    leuentjie.

n Leuen is n leuen en sal

    nie ongestraf bly nie.

Dit kom elke dag meer en

meer voor. Is dit dan nie deel

    van ons doopbeloftes dat ons

    ons kinders sal probeer opvoed

met die hulp van God nie?

    Vergeet ons dat ons hierdie

belofte afgel het en God ons

    altyd verantwoordelik sal hou?

Ek kry baie te doen met

ouers en kinders en kom dit al

    hoe meer agter.

    Iemand het eendag ges jy

    kan my enigiets vertel, maar

    moenie my intelligensie onder-

    skat nie.

Sonder om te blik of te bloos

word leuens vertel en dan lyk

dit of die mense hulself glo.
