Amatric pupil of Curro Private Schoolin Durbanville, who suffered severeeyesight loss in 2012, won the fight

against all odds with excellent exam re-sults.

Siobhan Clulow was one of 67 matricswho wrote the National Senior Certificateexamination of the Independent Examina-tion Board (IEB).

She achieved an average of 63 %, with herbest marks in mathematics literacy (81 %),English (71 %) and life orientation (75 %).

Siobhan has great difficulty with eye fo-cus, which makes reading problematic andresults in her suffering from severe mi-graines regularly.

She had to “listen” to her lessons and herteachers’ kindly enlarged reading materialto A3. Her mother, Louise, read all her textbooks to her and they recorded it, so thatshe could listen to it over and over.

She used a magnifying glass to assist herin making out written text.

Siobhan applied to have a scribe assisther with writing her June, September andher final exams, who read the questionsfrom the enlarged exam paper, which sheanswered orally.

Lost sightShe is also unable to judge depth making

simple procedures, like climbing stairs,challenging. Her eyes are so light sensitivethat it is often necessary for her to weardark glasses inside buildings, Louise said.

It was in June 2012 when Siobhan wentto write her Grade 11 accountancy examthat she found she was unable to see her ex-am paper.

It appeared she had suddenly lost hersight literally overnight, her mother said.

She immediately went to Dr JohannKrüger, an ophthalmic surgeon, who diag-nosed her with a rare eye disease, kerato-conus, which attacks the cornea of the eyeand eventually leads to blindness.

Siobhan had to undergo emergency sur-gery on both eyes. She had to be awake dur-ing the three-hour operation. She also hadplastic rings inserted into her eye to helpstabilise the cornea.

“This procedure is very new in South Af-rica with only Krüger being able to performthe surgery,” she said.

After the operation, which was done inAugust 2012, Siobhan was required to usenight goggles so that she would not acciden-

tally rub her eyes and dislodge the plasticrings in her eye during sleep.

ListenShe also had to wear dark glasses as her

eyes were extremely light sensitive. It wasexpected that it will take about six monthsfor her sight to return.

Siobhan went to school every day – notable to read or write. She had to “listen” toall her lessons.

She was also unable to continue with hermodern dancing, jazz and ballet, as the cor-neas may have become detached.

“This was a great sorrow as she haddanced since the age of five had made thefinals in all categories at the eisteddfod, aswell as winning a medal for her ballet,” Lou-ise said.

Siobhan had an allergic reaction to someof the medication that was given to her,which set her healing back a whole month.She also suffered from severe migrainesevery day.

However, Siobhan decided to continuewith her matric year.

“Although the odds were against her, shewas determined to try and get a good mat-ric,” Louise said.

To her great joy, she has been provision-ally accepted at the University Stellenboschto study BEd foundation phase.

“I am very lucky that the university hasa whole department for visually impairedand blind students with audio books and en-larged text books,” she told TygerBurger.

RuthBerry, is one ofmanymade by support-ers ofMilo, a dog that was impounded by theAtlantis Animal Pound for biting and per-manently damaging a child’s hand.The child, Joline Janse vanRensburg,was

visiting a friend’s house and while waitingoutside the gate, their dog bit her hand fromthe inside of the palisade fence.Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waiting

in his car, jumped out while he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately,where she received 27 stitches.This happened almost three months ago,

but Joline is still in shock. Not only couldshenotwrite herGr 11 final exam, the injuryhas also left herwith anugly scar. Joline lostfeeling in part of her right hand ... as wellas all her friends.Joline has become a victim in a Facebook

campaign to releaseMilo. In very little time,Milo has gained the support of close to 4 400animal activists worldwide on www.caus-es.com website, after the owner made a pleato release him.Unbridled insults against the Janse van

Rensburg family were rife and on anotherpublic Facebook page of Kruvet AnimalHealth, owner of Milo, Sharné Jordaan, said“Ek sal daai etters sue wat my ‘kind’ weg-neem”.She also posted the cellphone number of

the law enforcement officer in charge of theimpoundment unit, email addresses ofHelen Zille and promised to get the cell-phone number of Joline’s father so that peo-ple can direct their anger to them in personin order to release Milo.

TraumaOn17December, someoneposted this com-

ment: “This 16-year-old girl must be pun-ished for causing poor Milo all the trauma& suffering! If it wasn’t for her irresponsibleactions this would never have happened!”The Janse vanRensburg family did not re-

spond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on social me-dia and made copies of everything. In theprocess they came across two other peoplewho have been bitten byMilo in the past andcommentsmade by Jordaan on several occa-sions prior to this incident, asking adviceabout her dog’s aggressive behaviour.Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’ moth-

er, says they do not want to make a decisionabout the life of the dog. “The lawmust takeits course, but the fact is our child is inno-cent. She is the one who got bitten here. Wedid not want to do it the media way, we relyon what’s right. If I take part in this debateon social media, people will attack me.”The campaign has also taken a political

turn: “Weare starting a twitter storm tohelpsave Milo. If you are on twitter please tweet@helenzille to send Milo home and get yourfollowers to retweet,” one of the organisersof the campaign posted on the “Causes”web-site. Several people threatened not to voteDA if Milo was not released.On 13 January, Milo was released and re-

turned to his owner.“Thematter was first brought tomy atten-

tion during middle December. By the timeit was submitted to me there had alreadybeen a lot of water under the bridge and afair amount of tension had arisen as certaincomments had been made on social mediaabout the injured girl,” says Richard Bos-man, head of safety and security for the Cityof Cape Town, who ordered Milo’s release.He says he opened communication with

both parties in the decision-making process.

Litigation“Despite all the raised emotions and the

possibility of civil as well as criminal litiga-tion, my sole focus was to consider the re-quest by the owner of the dog to not have itdestroyed. Representations in this regardweremade tome byMs Jordaan’s attorneys,which I provided to the complainant’s fatherto get his view. He indicated in an email thatthis was not his business and that the deci-sion was mine to make,” Bosman says.He added that Jordaan had complied with

the request to fence in the property properlyand to have the bell, whichwas on the insideof the fence,moved.He says his decisionwasalso influenced by the fact that the incidenthad not happened on a public road and thatJoline did not raise an objection to havingthe dog released.“In addition the complainant had already

laid criminal charges at the police which iscurrently under investigation. My decisiondid not and cannot impact upon a criminalor civil litigation the party wishes to insti-tute. In terms of the by-law the magistratestill has the authority to order the destruc-tion of the dog.“In terms of the other complaints, this had

happened some time before and none of thecomplainants had made personal contactwith me on the matter,” Bosman said in astatement.

Die Tygerberg-mannekoor is ses jaar ouden net soos ’n 6-jarige wat op pad skool toeis, beweeg die koor nou in die volgende fa-se van sy “lewe”.

“Die eerste ses jaar is die karakterbou-tydperk,” sê ’n koorlid, Jaap Visser. Hyverduidelik dat die koor noudeur sy groei-fase is en ’n duidelike visie vir die toekomsvan die koor het.

Visser sê toe oudpres. Nelson Mandelaoorlede is, het hulle besluit die beste ma-nier vir hulle om sy lewe te eer, is om ’ninklusiewe koor te bou.

“Ons wil deur sang en samesyn en uit-

reik na die gemeenskap die nasie saam-trek,” sê hy.

Toe die koor by die All Saints-kerk inDurbanville beginhet,was die gemiddeldeouderdom van die lede 75, maar Visser sêdis besig om te verander.

Aprobe was recently launched intosmall but irregular deductions madefrom pensioners who drew their old

age grants at Pick n Pay pay points in De-cember.This paypoint service was made available

to all social grant beneficiaries in April lastyear, by means of their Sassa cards, whichmeans they avoid standing in long queuesfor hours at Sassa paypoints each month.During December several pensioners in

the Brackenfell/Kraaifontein area werecharged additional fees ranging in amountbetween R2 and R10, when withdrawingtheir pensions at Pick n Pay in Cape Gate.According to statistical reports for 2013,

2.8 million people receive social grants inthe Western Cape alone. Of this, 258 759 areold age grants.

Investigation“This is the first time a fee was charged,

before it was free.“And why was the fee not the same across

the board? Pick n Pay had a notice up thatall Sassa transactions were free and nowthey are charging!” said one of the pension-ers* TygerBurger spoke to.When this particular pensioner contacted

the Sassa call centre, she was advised by aconsultant that the matter was under inves-tigation.On enquiry, Jonathan Ackerman, direc-

tor of customer services at Pick n Pay, con-firmed that the store does not charge any feefor the withdrawal of Sassa grant payments.“We have consulted with Sassa and it ap-

pears that some Sassa transactions mayhave incurred transaction fees... Pick n Payconsiders the payment of social grants as aservice to our communities and does notprofit from it at all,” he told TygerBurger.He referred customers who found they

have been charged a transaction fee to theSassa call centre.Shivani Wahab, spokesperson for Sassa

also confirmed that there should be notransaction fees charged when beneficiar-ies access their social grants via approvedmerchants such as Pick n Pay.“Transaction fees apply only in the case

of ATM withdrawals, where standardATM rates apply,” she said.“We will have to take the matter up with

CPS (CashPaymaster Services)who is con-tracted to Sassa for the payment of socialgrants, for further investigation.”

RefundsIt is not certain yet what the outcome of

this investigation is, but TygerBurgercould establish that no additional deduc-tions were made from the pensioners inquestion during January.The deductions made in December how-

look forward to in 2014. The annual In-ternational Consumer Electronics

Show (CES) was held in Las Vegas earlierthis month and provided great insight intowhat to expect, technology-wise, this year.Some products might, however, not be avail-able in South Africa for a while.

My vrese was bewaarheid toehy naby ons verby waggel metdie vishoek in sy mond. Hy wasso beangs en het gelyk of hyhulp soek. Dis aaklig om dit teaanskou en jy voel so hulpeloos.En dit terwyl daar ’n man nogsit en visvang!

Federation against Copyright Theft (SA-FACT) who discovered when watching apirated copy that the DVD starts with thefirst 15 minutes of the film, but thereaftercontinues with the film, Invictus whichwas released four years ago.The pirates have used the same cinema

poster artwork of the film Mandela: LongWalk To Freedom as the inlay/cover fortheir pirated discs tomake it appear legiti-mate.The film was released on 28 November

2013 at cinemas in South Africa and hassubsequently been released in the UnitedKingdom, the United States, Canada,France, Holland, Portugal, Israel, Iceland,Switzerland,Belgiumand theMiddleEast.Germany, Finland, Norway, Spain, Den-

mark, New Zealand and India will releasethe film later this month.The film isnot legally available in aDVD

format anywhere in the world and the pi-rates are defrauding the publicmisleadingand misrepresenting (them).Producer, Anant Singh, says: “We have

taken every possible measure to ensurethatMandela: LongWalk to Freedom is notpirated. It is extremely disappointing thatthe film is being targeted by pirates whoare passing off their fakeDVDs as the com-plete film. We urge the public not to sup-port pirates by buying the fake DVDs.”In a press release, SAFACT stated that

Three adorable dogs in the care of theFisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) areavailable for adoption.Bear is a three-year-old chow-crosswith

themost beautiful laid-back, quiet person-ality. He is small to medium and loves toeat and snooze.Cindy andOptel, both female, have been

with the FAW formost of their lives. Theyare a year old and came from the samehome. They are low to medium energydogs and have a lot of love to give to theirforever family. A home-check and adop-tion fee apply.The FAW is a community-based, non-

profit organisation that works among theanimals of Fisantekraal,Morningstar andfarms surrounding Durbanville.The organisation is entirely self-funded,

and relies on donations.The FAW now also helps and advises

residents about animal care, provides sub-sidised food and feeds animals, bathes anddips dogs for ticks, fleas, andmange, helpssick animals, provides kennels, assistswith collars and runners, vaccinatesagainst rabies and other diseases, and or-ganises sterilisations.The volunteers of the FAWrun an infor-

mal shop, selling donated items to the peo-ple ofFisantekraal to raise funds.Unwant-ed, neglected, or abused animals are takeninto foster care to try and find homes.An average of 30 to 40 dogs are washed

on a Saturday morning by two or threevolunteers, up to 75 animals are vaccinat-ed on a day by only one person, and be-tween 10 to 15 animals are sterilised everyweek. The FAWaims to sterilise over 1 000animals this year.“All of this is done by 15 to 20 unpaid

volunteers based in three donated ship-ping containers with no electricity,” saidJane Payne of the FAW.Withhelp from theAnimalAnti-Cruelty

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began.He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor,which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music.It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

Three online scams to be aware ofAfter the holiday season is the perfect

time for scammers to be out in fullforce, as everyone is strapped for cash.

The most recent scam was one run on Fa-cebook, offering free gift cards from Wool-worths and Pick n Pay.Dial a Nerd, a local IT management serv-

ice provider, have listed three of the biggestscams, which will help you stay ahead of thescammers and allow you to enjoy your on-line experience with peace of mind.

Malicious linksThe easiest way to be targeted is via an

email, text or Facebook post, offering a greatdeal. “Generally, don’t click on a link fromsomeone you don’t know as it could be spy-ware or a malicious program designed tocapture passwords and other personal infor-mation,” warns Leaine Brebber, head ofcommunications at Dial a Nerd.If you didn’t remember entering a compe-

tition or ordering a package, it is probablya scam. If the deal is too amazing to be true,

it’s probably a scam. Such as the “Get a FreeR500 Woolworths or Pick n Pay Gift Card bysharing the link on your Facebook page”scam.“Always check the source of the link –

even if it’s from someone you know. Ascammer could have hijacked their accountand sent it on their behalf,” she says.Phony gift card offers come in the form of

an email, textmessage or Facebook post say-ing that you’ve won a prize or that you’vequalified for a massive discount or sum ofmoney on a gift card. You are then requiredto enter extensive personal information inorder to receive it or share the link to yourfriends.“Don’t do it! The more personal informa-

tion they have, the easier itwill be to get intoyour bank account, for example.“Ignore links offering ridiculous dis-

counts and steer clear of sites that offer giftcards at unheard of prices,” she continues.“About unknown sites advertising unbe-

lievable offers: You know the saying, “if it

sounds too good to be true, it probably is”?This is the general rule when it comes toscams.”Some sites do offer amazing deals, like

Groupon and Superbalist (Citymob), but it’sthe unknown sites that you need to watchout for. The ones with strangely spelt namesor the ones offering highly sought afteritems like iPads and iPhones at abnormallylow prices.Be very wary when entering your credit

card details onto unknown sites and makesure that the site is secure: The web addressshould beginwith https:// instead of http://.The “s” means that it is secure. “We recom-mend using a separate card for online pur-chases and setting your limits as low as pos-sible, so that if your details are stolen, thedamage will be minimal. It’s also advisablenot to save any of your credit card detailson a site for future purchases,” Leaine advis-es.Dubious websites can also pull you in by

offering vouchers for popular gifts. If you

have to enter a lot of personal informationto get the voucher, the warning bells in yourhead should start to sound.If you are required to sign up to the ac-

count to purchase, using a password you ha-ven’t used for anything else, is a good idea.

What to doV If you think you’ve been involved in an

online scam, immediately run a virus scan.Mobile phones and tablets aren’t immune toscamware, so this applies to all devices. “Werecommend using ESET NOD32 for desktopand mobile security.”

V Change your password if you think youhave been scammed on a social media site.

V Call your credit card company rightaway – they will put a watch on your cardfor suspicious activity.“To recap, stick to the well-known sites,

don’t click on any links from unfamiliarsources and don’t be tricked into giving upextensive personal information to get a gooddeal,” Leaine concludes.

The achievements of Charlaine CoetzeeHirst are nothing short of remarkable,hence her induction into theWomen’s

Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada.It all started way back in 1978, where

Charlaine, then amere five years old, start-ed swinging clubs at the Durbanville GolfClub.

Durbanville“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along to Durbanville Golf Club whenev-er he would play. I used to take him on atchipping and putting contests all the time.“I have such incredible memories of

growing up playing golf at Durbanville andplayingwith the ladies’ section there. I wonthe Ladies Club Championship twice.“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as ajunior and I also captained the FairmontHigh School golf team,” Charlaine reflectedon the good old days. She alsowon the Pren-tice Cup for u-21 females in WP.

ProfessionalAfter her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dreamof playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship to

Longwood College in Virginia and that iswhere my “career” began. I had a great col-lege playing career – I won the NationalChampionship for Division II schools 3timeswhile at college and inmy senior year1995 I won three major awards – VirginiaWomen Athlete of the Year, Honda Awardfor Division II Athlete of the year and To-day’sTopEightAward (highest honour thatthe NCAA awards to college athletes),” saidCharlaine.The tone was set for the professional

ranks after a dream amateur career, turn-ing professional in 1996 and playing on the

tour for nine years.She won the LPGA T&CP Southeast Sec-

tionChampionship in 2009, including sever-al other top 10 finishes during her career.She also had some success on home soilwhen se placed second in both the SouthAf-ricanWomen’s Open and TelkomClassic in2001.These days Charlaine is at the Whisper-

ing Pines Country Club as a Class A teach-ing professional. She runs a chippers campfor junior golfers.“I love teaching golf. I have my own busi-

ness – Golflessonsnc.com and I runmy ownjunior golf camps during the summerschool holidays.“I return to South Africa once a year and

visit my family. I also always try to get toDurbanville Golf Club and join the ladiesgroup for a round or two.”
