Vyf mense is die naweek dood in die Dur-

    banville-omgewing, onder wie n kleuter,

en een ernstig beseer in drie onverwante

    voorvalle.

Twee mense is dood nadat 12 plakkers-

hutte verlede Saterdag vroegoggend in Fi-

    santekraal afgebrand het.

n Ma en haar 3-jarige kind is Saterdag

omstreeks 23:51 op die Adderleypad buite

Durbanville raakgery.

    brand in Fisantekraal gevind.

haar kind vermoedelik in haar arms

langs die pad gestap toe diema raakgery

is, het Rhode ges. Die geslag van die kind

is onbekend. n Klag van strafbare man-

    slag word ondersoek.

Volgens Rhode is die slagoffers in die

twee moorde beide doodgesteek een in

    die Fisantekraal-plakkerskamp Saterdag

omstreeks 05:10 en die ander in Langver-

    wachtstraat in Fisantekraal op Sondag

    omstreeks 00:30. In laasgenoemde voorval

vrou, in hegtenis geneem. Daar was ook

    nege voorvalle van huisbraak, waarvan

vier in sektor 3 en twee in sektor 2, asook

    twee inbrake by sake-ondernemings.

    Daarwas 5 voorvalle vandiefstal uitmo-

torvoertuie, 2 voorvalle van diefstal van

    motorvoertuig n Ford Courier-bakkie

    en n Fiat Uno.

Twaalf mense is ook in hegtenis geneem

The number of units will depend on further

detailed surveys and on the land to be taken

up by the proposed access road via the De

Villiers/Van der Byl intersection, the slope

of the site, housing typologies, plot sizes, the

stormwater channel on the northern and

western boundary, as well as the seasonally

wet area in the western/northern portion of

the site and the level of the permanent water

    table.

This development would be ideal for gap

housing for people with an income of R3 500

or more, said Gerhard Fourie, chairperson

    of subcouncil 7 (Koeberg).

In the report it is also recommended that

    should theDurbanville sporting facilities re-

quire further expansion, portions of theDur-

banville race course be investigated for this

by the citys sports and recreation depart-

    ment.

These recommendations are part of sever-

al land use proposals, also of other vacant

city land. It follows after ameetingwith resi-

dents in April last year of what future land

use they suggest for several vacant city-ow-

ned land within the broader Morningstar

    area.

Other conclusions was that the portion of

an erf in De Villiers Avenue remains vacant

to accommodate expansion of the Durban-

ville clinic; that the erf in Newhaven Street

and the erf in De Villiers Avenue (opposite

the Durbanville soccer club) remains public

open space for use by the community.

The subcouncil and the public has the op-

portunity to comment on this first draft do-

cument, thatwill be available at theDurban-

ville library, the municipal offices in Kraai-

fontein and at the Alpha Primary School in

    Morningstar.

The opportunity to comment will close on

    13 March.

ders na skool besig te hou. Dit is n poging

om die straatkindprobleem en ander maat-

    skaplike bekommernisse te bekamp, het

Uys ges. Baie van die kinders kom uit en-

kelouer-huise en hierdie sentrum sal n

groot verskil aan hul sosiale aktiwiteite na

skool maak, het sy ges. Daar is al meer

as 180 soortgelyke sentrums in die Wes-

sport.

InMorningstarword

    daar reeds gimnastiek, in samewerking

    met E-sports, aangebied.

    Volgens Marius November, skoolhoof

ment vorendag kom voor ons verdere be-

    Ander aktiwiteite sal aangebied word

soos vrywilligers met hul unieke program-

    Bipolre

    versteuring

    aard.

Die een pool is die depressiewe pool

    waarin die persoon intense neerslagtig-

heid, n gevoel van hopeloosheid, n

verlies van eiewaarde, n verlies van

    energie, pessimisme omtrent die toe-

koms en onsekerheid ervaar. Die ander

pool is die maniese kant. Dit beskryf die

toename in rusteloosheid en energie. Die

persoon is praterig, onverskillig en in n

euforiese staat en toon oordrewe moto-

    riese aktiwiteit. Roekelose gedrag soos

    buitengewone spandabelrigheid, impul-

siewe dobbel en riskante seksuele gedrag

kan voorkom. Dit kan ook oorgaan in

    irritasie, woede, verwardheid en n

gevoel van om vasgekeer te wees.

    Voordat op n behandelingstrategie

besluit word, sal die psigiater, dokter of

sielkundige eers saam met die pasint

sit en n evaluering doen. Daarvolgens

    psigososiale aanpassing so effektief

mens dit nie moet afmaak as iemand

wat net buierig is en homself moet

    regruk nie. Hierdie versteuring ontneem

    n individu sy lewenskwaliteit. Moenie

skaam wees, of dink jy is simpel, of dit

Daar is

Restaurant dried up for nearly amonth

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    The Bloemendal Restaurant faced being

forced to stop trading shortly before Valen-

    tines Day after the restaurantwaswithout

running water for almost a month.

The City of Cape Towns environmental

    health practitioner threatened to with-

draw the restaurants certificate of accep-

tability (COA) if the municipal water sup-

    ply was not re-connected immediately.

A legal notice was served on the restau-

    rant.

The water supply was cut off from its

source at the Hillcrest wine estate, alleged-

    ly due to poor payment.

Water was in the meantime transported

to the restaurant in containers and used to

flush the toilets as well as in the kitchen.

According to a source, staff at the restau-

rant were told to tell clients that a pipe

burst on Hillcrest farm, causing the pro-

    blem with the water supply.

The City of Cape Town confirmed that

    the Bloemendal Restaurant receives its

municipal water supply from a neighbou-

    ring farm.

    According to Lungiswa James, mayoral

committee member for health of the City

of CapeTown, theCity becameaware of the

problem during a routine inspection car-

ried out by the environmental health prac-

titioner for the area on Tuesday 11 Februa-

    ry.

He gave a written instruction that the

water must be re-connected to the munici-

    pal supply.

    A follow-up inspection on Wednesday

12 February revealed that the water was

    still not connected.

A legal notice was then served on Bloe-

    mendal to re-connect themunicipal supply

    with immediate effect.

Failure to comply with this notice

would have resulted in the COA being

withdrawn. The water was, however, re-

connected at about 16:30 on 12 February,

    he said.

According to James running water is a

requirement of the Governing General Hy-

    gieneRequirements for FoodPremises and

the Transport of Food, promulgated in

terms of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics andDis-

    infectants Act.

All premises handling food are requi-

red to comply with this regulation and

must be in possession of a certificate of ac-

ceptability (COA), which is issued on com-

pliance with all such requirements, he

    said.

The COA can be withdrawn in cases of

non-compliance, with the result that tra-

ding must be ceased, he continued.

Gerrit du Toit, a director of Hillcrest, did

not want to reveal the reason for the cut-off

earlier and did not want to comment any

    further.

    on Saturday 15 February.

This was the first outing of this nature,

said Moossa Raise, chairperson of the Mor-

The purpose of the outing was to expose

our youth to nature conservation to help sa-

feguard our fragile earth and it was with

Chantal Jooste, a nature conservation stu-

dent at the reserve, gave a short overview of

the reserve and then took the group on a tour

    around the facility.

Even though it was extremely hot, we had

an enjoyable time learning new things about

the wonders of nature so close to home.

The youth were really excited and have le-

arnt a lot. At the end of the sessionChanta-

le challenged us to commit to sustain this

initiative. We all accepted the challenge

and pledged to commit ourselves to this

worthwhile cause when we all signed the

    pledge, Raise said.

The next conservation activity will take

place on Saturday 15 March at the reserve.

    Durbanville, Visual Manifesto, on Tues-

day 18 February, it was officially announced

that a new curator for the Rust-en-Vrede art

    gallery had just been appointed.

Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren, who joined

Hamlin studied jewellery design and ma-

nufacturing at the Cape Peninsula Universi-

She has taught art classes from home and

did free-lance illustration work. Last year

she worked in an art gallery on a cruise ship

    for six months.

Monica Ross, who was the curator for the

past 13 years, was thanked for her outstan-

    ding contribution.

Ross will still be actively involved as a

    consultant.

tentions, motives or views and is designed

to embody what is important to you and

    what inspires you.

The group exhibition featured 20 different

    artists in varied media.

Besides the group exhibition, there was a

side display of beautiful ceramics from vari-

The oil that was streaming out of the back

door of the KFC in Durbanville, was not oil,

but drain cleaner that was used to clean the

    grease trap.

    Thiswas the comment fromKFChead offi-

ce after a complaint from aTygerBurger rea-

der that the Durbanville store ran its used

    oil down the stormwater system.

The man said he and a few friends went

to the shop on 26 January where they made

    use of the drive-thru facility.

When he climbed out of the car, he felt his

feet were very slippery. He then noticed the

substance, that he surmised was oil, strea-

ming out of the back door.

This is chemical waste and illegal. We al-

so struggled to drive off and were nearly in-

volved in an accident due to the oil on our

    tyres, he said.

According to Gail Sham, corporate com-

munications manager of KFC South Africa,

    the incident was investigated.

The staff were cleaning the grease trap,

using the stores degreaser as per routine

store maintenance. Drain cleaner was then

used to clean the overflow from the grease

trap. We believe that this could have made

    the surface slippery.

As an extra precaution, we are looking

into installing a catch drain at the back door

to see if it will help improve this process.

We take our customers safety very seri-

ously and ensure that all our old oil from

KFC Durbanville is picked up weekly by

Rein Oil in Cape Town, he concluded.

Slip up on KFC drain cleaner

The substance can be seen here streaming from the back door.

    In die Staatskoerant van

Vrydag 7 Februarie is die wet

    van 2008 aangepas ten opsigte

    van die spesifikasies van

    lampe.

Ek wil by Deon Louw, n

    elektriese ingenieur met 35

    jaar ervaring in plaaslike

    regering, weet: Hoekom het ons

    spesifikasies vir muurproppe

en lampe, maar die winkels is

    propvol produkte wat nie aan

    di minimum-vereiste voldoen

    nie?

    Soos u weet, is elektriese

    toebehore vreeslik duur en

    daarom lyk die goedkoper

    ingevoerde produkte na n

    makliker en beter keuse.

    Vervaardigers kla ook dat

    hierdie produkte nie gepolisi-

eer word nie en dat dit daartoe

    lei dat handelaars enige

    produk kan verkoop.

    Die klint sal verseker die

    goedkoper produk neem, en

Jan Alleman se kennis van wat

    presies die regte regulasies vir

proppe en lampe is, is maar

    skraps.

    Daarom maak ons keuses

wat op pryse gegrond is nie

    vasgestelde standaarde nie.

Ek wil u dus aanraai om

twee keer te kyk en slegs

    produkte met die SABS-merk te

    koop.

    Jy mag dalk nou meer

    spandeer, maar die ekstra paar

    rand kan brande en selfs

    ernstige beserings voorkom.

    Die Stad Kaapstad se brand-

    en reddingsdepartement het in

    2013 op sowat 26 000 voorvalle

    gereageer talle wat vermy

    kon gewees het.

    Ek wil graag inwoners

    aanraai om verantwoordelik op

te tree en beter keuses te maak

sodat ons saam n veiliger Stad

    Kaapstad vir almal kan skep.

    spesifikasies

Ons weet julle kla altyd oor

    salarisse by Shoprite, maar ek

sal julle ook min betaal as julle

    sulke swak diens lewer.

Ek staan n halfuur in die

tou en wag vir n lekker warm

brood uit die oond. My mond

water toe ek aan n dik sny

    brood met konfyt dink.

    Maar my bubble word gebars

    toe een van die werkers

    sleep-sleep van rens kom en

die brood in n sakkie sit

    sonder om handskoene te

    gebruik. Onmiddellik wonder

    sak toe onmiddellik.

Ek haas my na die betaal-

punt, want ek wil nie h die

    brood moet koud word nie,

maar ek sukkel om verby die

    handelaars, wie se voorraad

die hele paadjie vol staan, te

    kom.

    Toe ek by die betaalpunt

kom, sien ek die kassier is

siekerig. Sy help my maar in

slow motion, n sy haar kollega

    van haar pyne vertel het.

Teen die tyd dat ek tuis kom

    so twee minute van die

winkel af is my brood koud,

my eetlus is weg en ek eet

    BREADLOVER

    Epos

    Wathet nou van

    klintediens geword?

I would (like to) suggest a

    practical guide for other road

    users.

By law in South Africa, a red

L must be fixed to the rear

    screen on a learner drivers

    car until the person has

    successfully passed an official

    drivers licence.

    Similarly, when a licence is

    Introduce a sign for

    newdrivers

passed in England, a red L is

placed on the rear screen by

    the official traffic department.

    This is an excellent control

    measure.

    But, here is where common

    sense kicks in.

    A green L is stuck, with a

    new registration, number on

    the reverse of the sticker,

making it official. It is also an

    indication, from the traffic

    department, that the driver may

    drive unsupervised.

    The green L must remain

on the vehicle for six months.

    The newly licensed driver must

    now prove they are competent

    drivers, excluding any station-

    ary parking and including

    moving accidents.

    After the six months, the

    driver must return to the

    original traffic department, and

    an official will remove the

    green L.

    Only then is the driver

    considered to be competent road

    user.

    This is also a tremendous

    deterrent for people driving

    without any licence and just

sticking a red L on their car.

    T

errible Palsy. This is what the 9-year-

old Nimoe de Hoop with Cerebral Pal-

sy (CP) thought her disability was cal-

led. Nimoe is one of 4 000 people in South

Africa with CP. She suffered from a lack of

    oxygen when she was born.

    No-one understands Terrible Palsy bet-

ter than Lesley Potgieter, a mother, wife,

    author, ex-teacher and Edgemead resident

    livingwithCPwho is determined to change

    this perception.

Just because you have CP, it does not

mean you wont be the worlds next astro-

physicist, Lesley says. The question here

is What are you capable of, and what will

you be capable of if we make some chan-

    ges?, she asks.

One of Lesleys projects to help children

with CP to discover their potential, is the

    Aware Bear Helen.

Helen is a bear with CP. She visits dis-

abled children for two weeks at a time to

help them better understand and cope with

their situation. She travels with a journal,

and each child contributes to the journal

with stories and pictures of the visit.

    Helenwas createdafterLesleybecame in-

volved with the American Awareness Bear

Association as a writer, writing letters to

childrenwith disabilities on behalf of a soft

toy with a disability that goes out to visit

    children with the same disability.

    Changing the perception

The South African society is not ready

to deal with disability, says Carl. He says

he loves to takehis family to themovies and

the cinemas at N1 City have been redone

recently, but for all the grandeur, there is

only two wheelchair seats. And one is the

k*kkest seat in the whole theatre. You are

halfway in the isle, you sit right under the

light, and this, the Potgieters say, symboli-

ses the way society sees the disabled.

As soon as a baby with a disability is

born, everybody goes quiet. You are placed

in a private room. People talk in hushed vo-

ices. There is a negative connotation from

the beginning, instead of this is a gift, she

    says.

Despite spending her whole life with no

sensation in the right side of her body, Les-

ley was able to complete high school in a

mainstream school, because her body res-

ponded so well to treatment, but she still

    had to face many challenges.

If a teacher doesnot have remedial back-

ground, it is very difficult to understand

what a child with special needs really

needs. I was always in trouble for not being

able to draw a straight line with a ruler,

simply because one cannot do that with one

hand. And the physical limitations of child-

ren with CP can be countless, she says.

Lesley finished school and became a tea-

cherherself andmarried the love of her life,

Carl. They have two boys, Josh and Adam

    who are 12 and 11.

    More challenges

Five years ago, she suffered a major stro-

ke andher body lost its ability to compensa-

te for her disability. According to Carl, eve-

rything changed after that. Lesley had no

    speech left and she couldnotwalkanymore.

But by doing yoga and excercises in the

pool, she slowly fought her way back to be-

    ing mobile again.

Today she canmove around the house on

her own, but drives amotorised scooter on-

ce she goes out. Her speech has partially re-

turned, but inmany cases Carl has to trans-

    late.

But they are not interested in the blame

game. Instead Lesley uses her energy for

    the CP cause.

Helen and the community of Aware Bears

Yes, I am different, but I am not alone.

This is the message of Lesleys brainchild,

Helen. Because she is an inanimate object,

she can help the child to extend himself,

    Lesley says.

In the last 14 months, Helen has visited

17 children and three schools throughout

South Africa. Lesley understands the pro-

cess. She helps the children set goals and

achieving them. The idea is to empower pe-

ople and to break their isolation, says

    Carl.

The challenge is to find the families who

need Helen, because she is available for vi-

sits, and it costs nothing, Lesley says.

The building in Oxford Street in which the

OxfordArms tavern is situated, is the oldest

    building in Durbanville.

    The Durbanville Heritage Society unvei-

led a plaque on 12 February tomark this oc-

casion. The plaque appears on an outside

wall of the tavern in an alley between the

tavern and the neighbouring coffee shop.

Built in 1806, the Oxford Arms tavern is

one of three of the oldest historic houses left

    in Durbanville.

Part of their uniqueness is the fact that

    the exteriorwallswerebuilt of koffieklip

also called ferricrete and mud. Raw, sun-

dried bricks were used to build the interior

    walls.

The building was proclaimed a national

monument in 1989. The neighbouring buil-

ding was also built in the early 1800s. These

are the oldest remaining houses of the old

    village called Pampoenkraal, later named

Durbanville. The two houses were built

soon after the first town plot was awarded

to Josephus Jones, a gunner and cartogra-

pher of the Dutch East Company in 1806.

From the floor plan it is clear that the

structure originally served as a residence.

Towards the end of the 19th century it

may have been used as a private school for

    girls. The interiorwas extensivelymodified

in the 20th century for use as a business pre-

mise. Most of the door and window frames

are original, and a few small glass panes

with their uneven surface texture and bub-

    bles remained intact.

A wall was restored by John van Staden,

owner of Oxford Arms, during recent parti-

al restoration work. Van Staden decided to

leave an area of the stone and brick walls

    unplastered.

He enclosed these areas behind glass to

preserve them and serve as a visual remin-

der of how some of the old Cape houseswere

built. The historical tavern was the perfect

venue for members of the Durbanville Her-

itage Society to listen to a presentation by

Prof Matilda Burden on The Fascination

on BuildingMaterials: Looking at Old Cape

    Houses.

    While researching the history, Burden

said she found one of her best sources the

archival records of the Minutes and theRe-

solutions of the Political Council in the Ca-

pe. The information reflects a daily diary

    of events in the colony.

In those early days huge forests of yellow-

wood and stinkwood abounded in the Cape

at Table Mountain and Hout Bay, she said.

The first VOC defence stockade ever was

built of wood. A few years later they made

and fired bricks sourced from the local red

clay. Due to the inclement Cape weather

these bricks weathered badly. The solution

    was to plaster the walls.

. The annual general meeting of the Dur-

banville Heritage Society is presented in

the Durbanville library hall on Wednesday

    5 March from 19:00.

the Durbanville Heritage Society. Also pictured are Prof Matilda Burden (front left) and (back

Prof Matilda Burden discussed the fascination

of building materials in old Cape houses.

who tortured and murdered her husband.

    When Swanepoel (Matthew Dylan Roberts)

receives political amnesty he realizes that

amnesty is not enough to silence the past and

    only forgiveness brings freedom.

After receiving the award Shane said: We

look forward to being able to produce and tell

more stories that celebrate our diversity and

yet our unity. We do indeed have many sto-

    A

    copywriter and corporate trainer

    from Durbanville has recently laun-

ched an e-book, How to write well, on

how to write better business English in

    South Africa.

James Hurford, author and owner of Pas-

sion, a copywriting company, compiled the

book from articles he wrote for Bizcommu-

    nity and SA Leader.

Each chapter is an individual article I

wrote. They proved so popular, that I put

them together in a book, he said.

    He said toTygerBurgerhedecided tomake

the e-book available for free to help those

who need it most. The people with money,

who will buy it, dont need it, he said.

Hurford, who came from London to South

Africa in 2006, specialises in copywriting in

plain language for the financial services sec-

tor. He has over 25 years of experience wor-

king for top international advertising agen-

    cies.

    Illiterate

He said in his book that over 4,7 million

people in South Africa are completely illite-

    rate. A further 4,9million are semi-literate,

to the point that the written word has no be-

nefit to their quality of life. That means 9,6

million people are technically illiterate in

SouthAfrica, nearly 20% of the population,

    he says.

He believes literacy plays a vital role in

the growth and development of any nation,

and research has shown that the higher the

rate of literacy, the better the potential to

    succeed.

A high level of literacy can reduce pover-

ty and crime, contribute to economic

growth, and improve the quality of life of pe-

ople. Its no coincidence that peoplewhowri-

tewell dowell.Writingwell is one of the best

ways to advance your career, no matter

what it might be, he said.Good writing re-

flects you, as well as your company. By follo-

wing a few simple rules you can dramatical-

    ly improve yourwriting. And,with practise,

it can set you on the path to being a much

    better writer, he concluded.

Paws a cause for animal care

After many years of trying to find what

would be the most beneficial way in helping

animal shelters, the organisation Paws for

a Cause, kept coming back to find that their

prime key problem, even before funding,

was finding the animals new homes.

Paws for a Cause, an animal relocation

    programme, presents adopt-a-pet events to

try and find new homes for these animals.

Thenext event is on Saturday 1March and

Sunday 2 March at the Cape Garden Centre

in Joostenberg Vlakte from 10:00 to 13:00.

Even if you wish you could adopt every

single animal in need as you saw fit, its not

a feasible option, but there are ways to give

    back, saidHerveTruniger, founder of Paws

    for a Cause.

Working at an animal shelter can be just

as rewardingas saving every single stray cat

    and dog you come across.

Our shelter orphans really need your

help either if its giving them a warm lo-

ving home or even being a guardian angel

by donating or contributing towards their

stay at various shelters, he said.

Paws for aCause is also looking for donati-

ons of wood, blankets, food and toys.

A stall will also sell products ranging from

branded Paws for a Cause T-shirts, hoodies,

baseball caps and even name-tags for pets.

All proceeds will be in aid of needy shelters

in the Western Cape such as Uitsig Animal

    Rescue, Animal Rescue Team, Fisantekraal

Animal Welfare and the Animal Anti-cruel-

ty League. They are also looking for volun-

teers to help out at the adopt-a-pet events.
