My sick boy is a superhero
DESIRE RORKE
A local paediatrician, along with an en-
tire medical fraternity are holding out
for amiracle, since starting treatment of
a pioneering new medicine from the
USA, to save a three-year-old toddler
from the clutches of a rare terminal dis-
ease.
Little Danil le Roux from Uitzicht
was only two when he was diagnosed
with Leigh Syndrome, in May last year.
The devastating diagnosis was made
whenmomLianie took him to the doctor
after noticing that he started shaking
and could not walk any more.
Leigh Syndrome is an extremely rare
genetic disease, which systematically
destroys the neurons in the brain stem
responsible for motor functions such as
movement and breathing. Only one out
of every 40 000 children in the world are
diagnosed with this disease.
Unlike other boys his age, Danil can-
not run and play because he relies on a
ventilator to keep him alive. Moreover,
he cannot swallow and receives his nu-
trition and medication internally.
This dreadful disease invariably leads
to death, usually from suffocation and
from the outset Danil was given only a
few years to live.
Doctors however, detected a very ag-
gressive strain of the disease with
Danil and by October last year he was
soweak that he could not walk anymore
and fell into a coma.
He was rushed to hospital and was lat-
er coupled to a ventilator.
Ever since then he has been in the crit-
ical care unit of Capegate Mediclinic,
where he is currently fighting for his
life, along with his family and resident
paediatrician Professor Pieter Fourie
who is treating him.
In October last year Professor Fourie
realised that a new medicine known as
EPI 743, developed in the USA, was
Danils only hope of survival.
The Federal Drug Association in the
United States recently approved the
drug for trial and although it cannot
cure the disease it will help to arrest the
cell damage.
I contacted the pharmaceutical com-
pany that developed the medication and
started negotiating with them. We also
applied to the South African Medicines
Control Council for permission to im-
port it for the trial, says Fourie.
Danil, who has been part of the trial
for 100 days now, is the only South Afri-
can child taking part in the trial.
He has spent days in the critical care
unit and according to Fourie, the im-
provement of his condition since he
started the regime is nothing short of a
miracle a huge source of excitement for
Fourie and the research team in the
USA.
He has noticably improved from be-
ing totally dependant to a beautiful child
who sits up by himself, crawls and al-
mostwalks. He ismentally alert, he com-
municates, smiles and blows kisses our
way. He even gets angry!
The most surprising improvement
howeverwas seen on theMagnetic Reso-
nance Imaging (MRI) after only two
months of treatment, an excited Fourie
says.
The trial medication will continue un-
til June this year, and according to Fou-
rie, the possibility exists that it might
permanently prolong Danils life to an
advancedage, although this hasnot been
proved by long term studies as yet.
There is also a chance that he might
come off the ventilator in the near fu-
ture, Fourie says.
Meanwhile, little Danil on Friday cel-
ebrated his third birthday party at his
favourite place in the world, the Two
Oceans Aquarium. Hewas accompanied
by his parents, Fourie, his medical team
from theCapegateMediclinic and a tech-
nical team to monitor his ventilator.
It was a priceless moment when he
entered the aquarium, his eyes lit up! It
was his first trip outside the hospital in
four months, says mom Lianie who has
always refused to giveuphope onher on-
ly child.
He is such a brave little boy and my
superhero. He has taught me and so
many others what real endurance is all
about. He never cries nomatter how sick
he feels. Last year we were told that it
is the beginning of the end, but now we
havebeen givennewhope andknow that
miracles still do happen. I believe with
my whole heart that he will still mean
so much to many people and other chil-
dren who contract this disease.
A fund was established to assist with
Danils medical costs. Anyone wishing
to contributemay contact Lynn-Marie at
083 446 0733 or Esr at 082 889 9288.

JANA BEKKER
n Proteavallei-inwoner se onverskrokke
reaksie om inbrekers agterna te sit, het
nie net n oud-polisiekolonel se aandag ge-
trek nie, maar n beduidende rol gespeel
om een vas te trek.
Stop!! Volg my, volg my!
S het Roberto Camara verlede week
Ters Gunter, deesdae n polisiereservis,
se aandag getrek by n verkeerslig in Jip
de Jagerrylaan. Camara vanGrandiflora-
straat het Dinsdag 29 Januarie om 10:30
pas teruggekeer van die winkel toe hy
twee mans by n taxi voor sy buurman se
huis gewaar.
voorval vertel. Deur die woongebied is hy
agter hulle aan in Van Riebeeckshofweg.
Ek het deurentyd by my venster ge-
help, s Camara. n Paar uur vroer, in
polisiemagwas, by n verkeerslig gestaan
kombi vasgekeer.
vallei-buurtwag, s hierdie voorval is n
goeie voorbeeld van iemand wat oplet-
tend is.
Daar is n roete langs Van Rie-
beeckshof waarby hulle moet bly.

The co-ordinator of the Tygerberg Associa-
tion for Street People (TASP) in Bellville
was suspended last week pending an inves-
tigation.
Linda de Vries, TASP chairman, said no
charges have beenmade against Pastor Jer-
ry Louw, adding the board felt it best to ask
him to leave whilst an investigation into
possible misconduct is held.
Louw has worked at TASP for the past
nine years.
De Vries said it would be unfair to specu-
late on concerns which may yet prove to be
unfounded.
Itwas the intention of the board to inves-
tigate and hopefully return to normal work
in a very short space of time,
she said.
De Vries said Louws wife,
Hazel, who is also a pastor, is in
no way involved in the suspen-
sion. This can be seen by her
continued presence, De Vries
said.
De Vries said the matter
could not be investigated at the
moment, as Louw locked all ad-
ministrative documentation in-
cluding accounts, registers and
petty cash in his office. He refused to hand
over the keys.
De Vries did not want to divulge informa-
tion relating to the matter, as no charges
have as yet been made.
She said no hearing was held
and that thiswould only be done
should anything untoward be
found during the investigation
itself.
DeVries saidwhile thematter
was still under investigation,
she could not divulge when the
matterwas brought to her atten-
tion.
During a brief conversation
with Louw last week, he toldTy-
gerBurger: Theywant to get rid
of me, but on Monday Louw declined to
comment on the matter.
Hewas only prepared to say that a special
general meeting was to be held at TASP to-
night.

The City of Cape Town has produced the
General Valuation Roll 2012 (GV 2012) in
terms of the Municipal Property Rates Act,
that governs the valuation of properties.
TheGV2012was signed off by themunici-
pal valuer on 31 January 2013 and handed
to the city manager.
According to a city spokesperson, there
are 815 676 properties on the GV 2012 roll
with a total value of R913 billion.
This is an approximate increase of about
13 %over the total value of theGeneral Val-
uation in 2009. The number of properties
has increased by 39 925 since 2009.
It has a valuation date of 1 July 2012,
meaning that the properties are valued at
the market rate on that date.
Property rates based on theGV 2012 valu-
ations will be billed from 1 July 2013.
Publishing the GV 2012 valuation roll in-
cludes, publication of notices in the provin-
cial gazette, notices in local newspapers
and posting notices to property owners.
The valuation roll will also be posted on
the citys website: the GV 2012 will be avail-
able from 21 February 2013 at www.cape-
town.gov.za/propertyvaluationsad.
The GV 2012 will be made available for
inspection at 17 public inspection venues
across the city. City officials will be availa-
ble at these venues to assist members of the
public who wish to inspect the valuation
roll or submit an objection. Legislation al-
lows any person to lodge an objection
against the valuation of anyproperty on the
valuation roll if they believe that the valua-
tion is incorrect.
An objection must be submitted on the
prescribed objection form. The website
(www.capetown.gov.za/propertyvalua-
tions) contains instructions for download-
ing the prescribed objection form.
Anobjectionmust bewellmotivated.Val-
uations on the GV 2012 were derived from
sales that occurred around the valuation
date (1 July 2012) and it is, therefore, best
for an objector to motivate his or her objec-
tion by using information about sales
which occurred around that date. Informa-
tion about property sales have been made
available on the citys website and it will
also be available at the public inspection
venues.
Objectors can use this information to
identify the properties sold comparable to
their own properties and to motivate their
objections in this way.
The objection starts on 21 February 2013
and ends on 30 April 2013. Late objections
will not be accepted.
The Municipal Property Rates Act states
that properties must be valued at market
value which it defines as the amount the
property would have realised if sold on the
date of valuation in the open market by a
willing seller to a willing buyer.
Data on property sales that have taken
place around the date of the general valua-
tion are gathered and this information
forms the basis for the assessments of the
values of all properties.
The city makes use of a computer model-
ling program (computer-assisted mass ap-
praisal or CAMA) that uses sales data, aer-
ial imagery andother property information
to determine the value of a property.

ESM ERASMUS
Brave little Emma Fourie of Oakdale, who
touched the hearts of so many people, lost
her fight against cancer last Wednesday
and died peacefully, surrounded by her lov-
ing parents and family.
Family and friends wore purple and pink
Emmas favourite colours - to her funeral
onMonday. Several balloons were released
by the childrenat the funeral at theDurban-
ville Memorial Park. Her parents, Natalie
and Brent, also had her name tattooed on
their arms last Friday.
She was first diagnosed with cancer in
2008.
People opened their hearts for Emma and
even strangers, who read about her, started
to raise funds for her medical costs.
Emma, who would have been in Grade 3
this year at Gene Louw Primary School in
Durbanville, was admitted to hospital on 18
January after her condition worsened on-
ly two days after the schools opened.
TygerBurger reported in December that
a cancerous lesion was discovered in Em-
mas right shoulder.
She then went for an intensive radiation
session to relieve the pain and to enable less
use of morphine.
Their last family holiday together was a
trip in a private plane to the Shamwari na-
ture reserve near Port Elizabeth in Decem-
ber.
It was sponsored by the Kfm Christmas
wish list project. The cheetahs and big
male lion we saw, were definitely her high-
light.
She was very tired though between
gamedrives and sleptmost of the time, her
mother, Natalie, said.
She was doing all right then. She suf-
fered severe shoulder pain again, when she
was admitted to hospital.
It was then also discovered that a lymph
glandwas enlarged and grew over her lung,

Bikers let the rubber spin
The Hell Razors Motorcycle Club in Brack

Some 15 cars and 20 bikes were on show
with 150 people attending the event. All
the proceeds of the show are in aid of
the Durbanville Childrens Home and an
informal settlement in Klipheuwel that
the club supports on an ongoing basis.

Faku and Elliot Solomons, het n fundamentele rol ge-
Ekwas bly oor hul gees-
hy ges.
Sowat 40 kinders is reeds gereeld by oefeninge op
083 291 7615 bel of Dave Roberts by 082 773 0529 of Francois
Gertze by 021 979 3485.

A Grade 7 learner of Curro High School in
Durbanville was recently honoured by the
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs
and Sport, Dr IvanMeyer, for her outstand-
ing achievements in chess.
Dantelle Joubert was identified as a tal-
ented sport individual at the SA School
Sport Championships, held in Gauteng in
December last year and has been awarded
a ministerial bursary.
About 3 500 learners from nine sporting
codes took part in this event.
Dantelle participated as part of the Curro
u-13 chess team, which came second in the
country.
Itwasher solid performance andwinning
all her games that got her noticed at the
event, which was hosted by the national de-
partment of sport.
Some 14 learners were selected from
across the country to be the recipients of
these maiden ministerial bursaries.
Of the 14 learners, sixwere from theWest-
ern Cape.
Dantelle started playing chess at the age
of 10 while camping. She soon found herself
loving the game.
In December 2011 she competed for the
first time in the SA Junior Chess Champi-
onships and finished fifth in the country.
In 2012 she obtained her SA colours in
chess and competed in two international
tournaments. She also obtained her first
chess title, that of Womans Candidate
Master.
Her ultimate goal is to become a grand
master like her hero, Garry Kasparov.
Playing chess runs in the family. Herma-
ternal grandfather was an international
chess player and her sister, Tassie (7), is al-
ready a seasoned chess player.
Apart from chess, she also participates in
athletics, tennis, plays the piano and guitar
and loves to perform on stage.

Lonepoel te
klein vir al die
dors drinkers
Jy kry skielik n verhoging van by die
30 %, en jou baas word gedwing om dit
dadelik te betaal die regering s s.
Ongeag van hoeveel jy verdien, is jou
eerste gevoel natuurlik een van totale
histeriese vreugde. Jy is so oorstelp dat
spyker in jou, jou medewerknemers en/of
jou onderneming se doodskiste is.
Tensy jy skuld invorder of die Lotto
gewen het, gaan dit tans met niemand
geldelik uitstekend nie. Logika s as
dieselfde hoeveelheid mense uit dieselfde,
vlakkerwordende lonepoel moet drink,
gaan hulle of kleiner slukkies moet vat
om te oorleef, of daar moet minder
slukkers wees.
groot slukkers sal moet gaan, anders is
almal onderdeur. Dieselfde dorstiges het
immers die skure afgebrand, produksie
gestol, lewens bedreig.
hoeveel rampe
getref, die Here red
hom uit almal.

I would just like to inform the
people living in the Vierlanden
and Goedemoed areas that the
Rastafarian with the red
bakkie that stands at the
intersection of Fairtrees, Lubbe
and Langeberg roads, selling
wood to the public, is a cheat.
They should make sure when
they purchase 1 000 pieces that
they get what they pay for. I
was offered to take the com-
plete load off of them for an
amount. It was supposed to be
1 400 pieces.
After they had left I packed
and counted it myself and
found I ended up with 900.
When you confront them on
this, they are not interested in
you as they have been paid.
I even threatened them with
the police and they still
ignored the problem.
I see that they still stand and
sell at that point.
I would just like you to make
the folks around the area
aware of the how they do
business.
They always keep you
occupied while they offload so
that you cannot keep track.
Then they try to sell you
more as it is their last stop at
a good price.
When you tally up, you do
not even have what you
originally contracted to pay
for.

Wood sellers are
not entirely truthful
On 22 January, I was home
recovering from a back opera-
tion when I heard the sound of
chainsaws outside in the
garden.
Four men with four chain-
saws cutting down a tree that
took a very long time to grow.
I went outside to request the
workers to stop and show me
the paperwork and who in-
structed them to cut down the
tree. No paperwork, no identifi-
cation and refusal to speak
English.
I immediately called the
police who did respond but did
nothing to stop this carnage.
The police went to the munici-
pal council and came back with
the name of the official who
had appointed these tree
trimming contractors.
A request to the municipal
council for trimming of this
specific tree the correct way
was placed in August 2012. The
municipality responded that
they had a backlog in trimming
trees and appointed unscrupu-
lous contractors who are doing
their own thing with no regard
to people or trees.
All the useable branches were
neatly sawed and packed on the
contractors vehicle (probably
for reselling) and the branches
that had leaves on were left on
the pavement.
Humans have abused earth
for so long that the few of us
who do care about nature just
get ignored.

A warning to all cyclists and
runners using Majik Forest.
While running through Majik
Forest on Sunday 3 February, I
unexpectedly ran through a
piece of fishing gut that was
tied between two trees on
opposite sides of the path. I was
luckily not too badly hurt.
Its tied at the exact height of
a cyclist on his bike. Please be
careful when riding down the
path; it is very dangerous.
It could be a bad prank
played by some kids in the area
or vagrants trying to steal
bikes.

Why not buy turbines, to

why not supply part of Khay-

Instead they find it necessary

What can we show for it,
nothing but an overflowing

LEWENSKIEKIE
Throughout the many years on
various community forums, I
feel I need to express my
opinion regarding the absolute
lawlessness that pervades our
Durbanville.
In fact, it is a pandemic of
lawlessness. On a daily basis I
witness motorists disobeying
the law. Stop signs, zebra
crossings, red robots mean
absolutely nothing. Drivers
What itmeans to
obey the road laws
pay absolutely no heed to the
law. It is a shame that per-
vades our community.
I see residents of all ages
even young mothers with
children continue to disobey.
If you want to discuss what it
means to obey the law, you are
most welcome to contact me at

Rooies is n man wat woeker met
sy talente. Van stilsit weet hy
niks nie en die afgelope twee jaar
hethydingeaangepakwatdie ge-
middelde mens moeg sal maak
deur net daaraan te dink.
Daars sy Weskus-uur op Bok-
radio elke dag tussen 15:00 en
16:00, Rooies se Winkel en sy nu-
we teater by The Palms.
skakel en so min as moontlik probeer doen.
nie. Solank
ek pret het
engenietwat
ek doen, is ek gelukkig, s Rooies.
gemaklik is, sonder tierlantyn-
tjies.
Dit is dan ookheel gepas dat Rooi-
es by TygerBurger en Agrimark se
R100, ander liplekker Weskus-geregte, heer-
n musiekkonsert.

Vier vrae oor dieWeskus aanRooies
1.Wat is jou gunsteling-Weskusge-
reg?
Galjoen wat soos n snoek gaarge-
maak is. Die vis moet soos n snoek
aan die rugkant oopgesny word. En
dan ook bedruip word met appelkoos-
konfyt, knoffel en botter. Heerlik.
2.Waar het jy al die lekkerste op
die Weskus gekuier?
Dwarskersbos. Dis n regte vissers-
bolyf rondloop.
3.Wat maak die Weskus se mense
en vibe spesiaal vir jou?
Daars n verskil tussen die Weskus
se mense en ander mense. Ekt eendag
by n geselligheid op Elandsbaai
mikrofoon iets soos die Weskus se see
is ons see, ander plekke se see is die
ryk mense sn.
4.Het jy al self vir jou n kreef
uitgeduik/n vis gevang, skoonge-
maak en geethoe was die erva-
ring?
n Kreef nog nie. Eks te bang vir
die goed om dit te probeer vang. Ekt
wel al vis gevang en skoongemaak.
S n vis proe net beter omdat dit
joune is. Jy gee daaroor natuurlik
meer aandag daaraan en dit kom uit
in die smaak.
V Rooies is op 2 Maart die seremoniemeester by
TygerBurger se Weskus-makietie by die Paarl-
amfiteater. Hy tree ook die dag daar op.

The ACVV Koeberg is asking
for donations after recently
opening a pre-school facility in
one of the informal settlements
along the N7.
The registered non-profit or-
ganisation which works in the
greater Melkbosstrand area,
started its second pre-school
and daycare centre in the se-
verely impoverished rural
bush settlement this week.
There are 276 families in the
Skandaalkamp settlement and
a further 56 families in the sur-
rounding bush area with no ac-
cess to any form of daycare for
their pre-school aged children,
says ACVV Koebergs Nikki
Pretorius.
As a result, older siblings
(mostly girls) are kept from
school to mind younger chil-
dren in order for parents to
work in the surrounding are-
as, she adds.
Pretorius said they opened
the facility last week in the
hopes of accommodating chil-
dren as early as Monday 4 Feb-
ruary.
Due to the severe poverty
heremanyof the babies haveno
nappies on.
We foundonebaby there last
week in the care of her five-
year-old brother who was sit-
ting in her own faeces as he did
not realise she had soiled her-
self and was unable to take care
of her.
Her mother had no choice
but to leave her with her broth-
er as she could not afford to pay
a neighbour to mind the baby
and she had to work to put food
on the table, Nikki explains
the dire circumstances of the
people in these communities.
The daycare service will be
run out of a 6x3 mwendy house
and will be provided free of
charge.
This is to encourage parents
to leave their children in our
safe care to ensure they receive
not only safety and care, but al-
so much-needed pre-school
stimulation to help them
achieve long-term academic
success, Pretorius says.
Children will receive a nutri-
tiousmeal, a daily bath andwill
follow the recognised Early
Childhood Development (ECD)
curriculum.
The project is however, total-
ly reliant on private funding as
it is not a registered school.
Pretorius says they estimate
about 70 children between the
ages of one month to seven
years to be in their care on a
daily basis.
She reiterated that the nap-
pies and baby toiletries are a
priority, but baby furniture
will also be gratefully accepted.

It took just two minutes for bystanders to
knowwhat Jean-Marc Johannes is all about.
One moment he was suspended in the air
with a twisted body and the next he was on
his backside with a twisted ankle.
The pain would sendmost limping off, but
Jean-Marc walked the limp off and then he
pulled the move off perfectly!
This 22-year-old skateboarder from the
southern suburbs is one of the best in the
country. In fact, if skateboarding was a com-
pany he would be on the board, because
thats where he belongs.
Well,mostly on theboardHealso spends
some time on the floor
I have sprainedmy anklemore than I can
count! One should just brace yourself for the
fall If youve takenmany bails before then
you knowhow to do it. Youll land and ninja-
roll for like a few metres. Dont just let the
fall happen, he says philosophically.
Cool people like Jean-Marc use the word
bail, but Jean-Marc is not a bailer. He is
a class skateboarder who has strutted his
stuff on the international scene and he will
also be competing at the UltimateX event at
the V&A Waterfront on 16 February.
He certainly knows what hes doing, so he
has plenty of advice for beginners.
When you start skateboarding there will
come a time when youll think that this is
not for you. I started 10years ago.Youll start
doing basic tricks such as the olly, kick flips
and pop-shove. I started having more fun
with it and I started understanding the ba-
sics and finally I thought upmy own tricks,
he says.
Gnarly (is that word still cool?) combina-
tions of tricks will include names such as ol-
ly, laser flip, hard flip, kick flip, front-side
flip and darkside grind.
One of Jean-Marcs greatest memories in
his career happened in Amsterdam when
skaters from all over the world had to per-
form three of their best tricks for a place on
the 10-man podium.
The first was a flip-grab combo, then
someone else landed something way better
and I thought Id have to step it up a bit. Then
I landed a double backside flip, but then
someone landed something that was like a
combination of four tricks. The guywent up,
did a flip trick to a manual trick and then
he went down a rail! That was amazing! My
last one was a double-big spin flip down a
set of stairs.
I didnt expect anything, then they called
my name and I got a podium place! I thought
they were joking!
WIN! WIN! WIN!
