Twee tienerseuns van die geweldgeteis-terde Wesbank kon elkeen hul droombewaarheid om verder te studeer. Na-

dat hulle twee van slegs 10 studente is om’n beurs te ontvang, wink ’n blink toekoms.

Die seuns, Ziyaad Titus (18) en DamianKok (18), het albei onlangs by die SekondêreSkool Silversands gematrikuleer. Die tweewil albei vanjaar rekeningkunde by dieKaapse Skiereiland-Universiteit vir Tegno-logie (KSUT) studeer.

“Ek wil graag dié veld betree omdat ek ’npassie het vir syfers. Ek hou van rekening-kunde,” het Damian gesê. Hy en Ziyaad isalbei pas ’n beurs deur die Association for

Healing Through Art toegestaan.Volgens Leanne Stellenberg, stigter van

dié vereniging, vorm dit deel van hul leer-der-ondersteuningsprogram. Die programbehels onder meer werksessies wat by skoleaangebied word. “Die beurs is net een deelvan die program,” het Leanne gesê.

Damian is baie opgewonde oor die beurs.“Nou kan my droom waar word. Ek kan boe-ke koop en registreer vir die kursus met diégeld. Ek sien verskriklik uit daarna. Ek kannie wag nie; dis ’n heel nuwe uitdaging.

“Ek is ook dankbaar vir die verenigingwat die beurs aan ons beskikbaar gestel het.Daar is baie ander wat aansoek gedoen het,maar ons was suksesvol,” het Damian gesê.

Ziyaad is ewe opgewonde. “Ek het oor diejare ontdek dat ek goed is met syfers. Ek sal

graag eendag ’n rekenmeester wil word, ofdalk ouditeur,” het hy gesê. Hy is ook dank-baar vir die geleentheid om met behulp vandie beurs verder te kan studeer.

“Ek is bly ek het dit ontvang. Ek is opge-wonde oor die toekoms. Ek gaan die geld ge-bruik om handboeke te koop.”

Leanne het gister die seuns gemotiveer enaangemoedig om te fokus op hul werk en omhard tewerk opkampus.Net 10 studente ont-vang die beurs. “Die studente moet goeiepunte hê en hulle moet kan bewys dat hulle’n begeerte het om ’n sukses te wil maak vanhul lewe,” het Leanne gesê. Die vereniginghelp studente uit minderbevoorregte gebie-de sedert 2001 om borgskappe te kry. Die ver-eniging het sedert 2010 sy beurs begin om diéjongmense geldelik te help.

Despite a poor pass rate last year the staffat Malibu High School in Blue Downs saidthey are optimistic for 2014.Errol Thompson, a member of the

school’s governing body and spokespersonfor the high school, said in an interview re-cently that the school’s management is notimpressed by this year’s final results.The school achieved a 78.9 % pass rate.“We are unhappy and not pleased with

this year’s results,” he said.He said the school did not expect a signifi-

cant increase in the percentage last yeardue to the calibre of students in the matricclass.“We did not expect for it to be this bad,”

he said.In 2012 the school achieved an 84.9 % pass

rate.“We came down 6 %. That is a lot ... we

only had four more learners than the previ-ous year.”According to him the group of learners in

the 2013 matric class were less committedto their work.“Their whole attitude towards learning

was not what a matriculant should havehad. Apart from that we have all the facili-ties for them to use at the school,” he said.The school has a mathematics and com-

puter lab.“The educators encourage them to make

use of the facilities, but they do not attendthe extra classes, or they attend very little.He said each educator at the school has

extra classes after school and over week-ends.“But only three learners on average at-

tended these classes.”The school had 262 learners in total, of

which 55 did not make the mark.“We maintained our bachelor achieve-

ment. We had 59 bachelor passes last yearof the 219 learners that passed, comparedwith 57 bachelor passes this year out of the207 learners that passed.”He said the school is however optimistic

for this year’s matric class.“We have a better crop of learners this

year and we are aiming to achieve over85 %,” Thompson said.SamanthaKock (18) said shewasalsowell

prepared.“There were some difficult papers, but

most were fairly easy.”Kock passed with four distinctions.Tamsyn Gabriels (17) said the exam was

one of the easiest in her school career.“I was well prepared and spent many

nights up late with no cellphone nearby,”she said.Gabriels passed with three distinctions.

Errol Thompson, member of the Malibu High School governing body said they are unhappy withthe matric pass rate last year, but that they are optimistic about the class of 2014. With him isSamantha Kock and Tamsyn Gabriels, two of the school’s top performers in 2013.

’n Vergadering is die afgelope naweek bydieWesbank-sportterreingehouvirmilitê-re veterane wat deel was van die Suid-Afri-kaanse Kaapse Korps (SAKK).

Sowat 100 lede het die vergadering ommiddagete bygewoon waar hulle oor dieadministratiewe prosedures rondom hulvoordele ingelig is.Die vergadering is deurAndy Cloete, provinsiale voorsitter vandie Suid-Afrikaanse Kaapse Korps se mili-têre veterane-vereniging gelei.

“Die vergadering is eintlik ’n inligting-sessie. Dit word gehou om ons lede op tak-vlak te versterk en om almal in te lig oorpresies wat op hulle van toepassing is inverband met die voordele,” het Cloete ge-sê. Hy het gesê die vergadering het ook tendoel om die taklede te bemagtig met inlig-ting en hoe hulle te werk moet gaan om dievoordele wat in die wet vervat is, te begrypen hoe om toegang daartoe te kry.

“Daar is byvoorbeeld mediese, pensi-oen-, opvoeding- en opleidingsvoordele, so-wel as vaardigheidsontwikkeling.

“Die medies sluit in mediese sorg virmense met liggaamlike of geestelike ge-stremdheid,” het Cloete verder verduide-lik. Hy het gesê daar is ook sekere voordelewat in die wet vervat is vir die afhanklikesvan militêre veterane. “Die jeugdiges endie vroue van die veterane; ook die afge-storwe soldate.” Hy het gesê die SAKK wilhiermee help om die sosio-ekonomiese om-standighede van die militêre veterane teverlig. “Daar is strategieë in plek van diedepartement van militêre veterane waar-volgens ons werk om dit te verwesenlik,”het Cloete gesê.

’n Inwoner van Forest Glade in Eersterivierherstel tans in die hospitaal nadat hy kortvoor Kersfees deur ’n bakkie raakgery is.

JohannesArendse (67) het op 20Desembersaam met twee van sy vriende op die hoekvan Redgumstraat in Rosedale, Eersteriviergestaan toe die bakkie glo teen ’n hoë spoedom ’ndraai in die pad geryhet, enhomgetrefhet.

Die bestuurder het glo daarna agteruit be-weeg en oor albei Arendse se bene gery.

Sy bene is op verskeie plekke gebreek, hetsy vrou, Melinda Arendse, gesê.

Die twee mans wat saam met hom was, isongedeerd.

Hy het gesê behalwe die buurtwagte watdie strate patrolleer en veilig hou, is die fo-rum ook betrokke by opvoedings- en be-magtigingsprogramme met die doel om ’nkultuur van eienaarskap te kweek, sowel asrespek vir mekaar. “ ’n Omgewing vry vanmisdaad, dwelms en bendes en vry van mis-handeling van ons vroue en kinders. ’n Om-gewing waar almal in harmonie en vredemet mekaar kan leef,” het Beerwinkel gesê.

Clarke, ’n ma van ’n sesjarige dogter, isVrydag 3 Januarie by haar huis oorlede.

Haar kollegas het haar as ’n toegewyde enhardwerkende lid van die polisie beskryf.

“Ons kon vir ure aaneen praat. Sy was ’nware vriend. . . ’n suster. Sy sou altyd haarlaaste vir enigiemand gee en het altyd ’nglimlag op haar gesig gehad,” het sers. An-gela Swanepoel, ’n kollega, tydens haar hul-deblyk gesê.

Sy het Clarke as ’n hardgebakte soldaat

Tuscany Glen High in Blue Downs is lastyear’s top performer of all the schools in thegreater Blue Downs and Eerste River dis-trict.Josephine Lawrence, principal, said al-

though they do not want to boast they arehappy about the achievement, “especially inthe light of the fact that the school is still inits infancy years,” Lawrence said.She ascribed the success to the educators

whohad raised the level of teaching andwhohad sacrificed their own personal time topresent extra classes after school.“I am grateful to be part of a team that up-

lifts each other in difficult times,” Lawrencesaid.The school opened in 2006.“All our symbols are better than the previ-

ous year’s. For Afrikaans we achieved a100 % pass rate. Our learners also fared wellin economics, English and life orientation.”She said the students achieved 90 % and

more in most subjects.“We have 30 bachelor passes. We had top

candidates last year, and quality passes,”Lawrence said.

She said the quality of her teaching staffis also world class.“The teachers are highly motivated and

dedicated. They even fight amongst eachother to teach the Grade 12 students. Theyreally do put in the effort.”The school had a total of 120 matric learn-

ers of which 118 wrote the final examinationand 98 passed.The school achieved an 83.1 % pass rate,

compared with 84 % in 2012.“We had a slight decrease but had an in-

crease in the quality of the passes.Wewouldlike to continue on this percentage for 2014,but would like for our students to achievea 100 % pass rate in the near future,” Law-rence said.Annikha Thomas (18), the top student,

said the examinations came with some chal-lenges but that most of the papers she wrote

had been fairly good.Thomas received abursary andwould like

to study something in the field of science,she said.“I would like to explore, to work in a labo-

ratory, teach or be a psychologist,” she said.Mogamad Zaid Tasriet (18), said he expect-

ed the worst, but that the examination waseasy. “My results were good. I came secondout of all the learners at school,” he said.
