OKKIE VAN SENSIE: ‘HY WAS MY MAN, MAAT, HELD’, SÊ VROU

“Hy was my man, my maat en myheld.” Só praat Sheila van Sensieoor haar inspirerende man. “Hy

was my wêreld vir die tydperk wat ons ge-troud was,” sê sy.Seigo August van Sensie, beter bekend as

Okkie van Sensie, die bekende Kaapse stap-per, is op Vrydag 8 Februarie in die ouder-dom van 80 in sy huis in Sarepta aan lewer-kanker oorlede.Hy het sy staploopbaan in 1963 begin ná

hy ’n berig in die Argus gelees het oor ’nstaptog waaraan nie-blankes kon deelneem.Dit was die begin van “die stapper van for-maat” se deelname aan vele stapmarathons.Hy het die eerste SA kampioen geword in

1965 oor 50 myl. In 1973 het hy deelgeneemaan die Londen na Brighton-wedloop en hethy die klubafrigterstoekenning van die Brit-se amateur-atletiekraad ontvang.Hierdie was maar een van die prestasies

waarop Sheila sê sy is vreeslik trots. Diestaptog vir die slagoffers van die vloede in1984 van Kaapstad na Durban was nóg ’ntrotse oomblik.

KampioenIn 1994 is hy aangewys as die drie-dubbele

gouemedalje-wenner op die wêreldbyeen-koms vir veterane van die Afrika-streek enhet as 72-jarige die SA stapkampioen-titeloor 20 km verower.Okkie was nie net ’n stapper van formaat

nie, maar was ook ’n filantroop in sy ge-meenskap. “Sypassiehet ontstaanvir syme-demens omdat hy self baieminderbevoorreggroot geword het. Hy was hulle mondstuk,”sê Sheila.Okkie het vele liefdadigheidsorganisasie

gehelp, insluitend Meals on Wheels en Ope-ration Hunger. Hy het mense ook gehelp om

vinniger pensioen en ander toelaes te kry.Sheila sê hy het hom as “vrederegter” be-kwaam.Sy dogter, Brigette, beskryf hom as baie

saggeaard en iemand wat nie gou kwaadge-word het nie. “Hy het my seker een keer pakslae gegee en dit was toe ek ses jaar oud was.Ek wou altyd om hom wees,” sê sy.Brigette vertel watter goeie voorbeeld Ok-

kie vir hulle gestel het. Sy sê hy het hullegeleer om respek te toon en mense te aan-vaar, en om vriendelik en verdraagsaam tewees. Sy sê “hy het die vermoë gehad omwerklik te luister, te besin en dan te ant-woord. Hy kon baie diplomaties wees, maarbaie regverdig”.

SareptaOkkie en Sheila het in 1987 na Sarepta ge-

trek. Hulle het ’n paar gelede ’n tuinprojekbegin om ’n oop ruimte te verfraai. Sheilasê dat tuinmaak een van sy passies was wathy terapeuties gevind het.Die tuinprojek het baie mense in die ge-

meenskap gehelp. In 2009 is hy vereer metdie burgemeestersmedalje van Kaapstad virsy bydrae tot die samelewing. Sy lewensver-haal is in 2010 vervat inPortrait of aWinner- The Story of Okkie van Sensie.“Daar is soveel bewondering, maar ook

hartseer oor wat my pa bereik het,” sê Bri-gette. Sy sê dis hartseer dat haar pa nie altyderkenning gekry het vir wat hy bereik hetnie, maar sy is trots op sy mylpale.Hy laat sy vrou, Sheila, en vyf kinders,

asook kleinkinders, agter.“Ek hoop dat mense sal besef dat jy op jou

eie manier ’n verskil kan maak in jou ge-meenskap. Dit is watmy pa se storie vertel,”sê Brigette.Sheila sê hy sou wou hê mense moet help

waar hulle kan en omaan te hou, al is watterstruikelblokke op hul pad.

The efforts and involvement of MEC for Hu-man Settlements, Minister BonginkosiMadikizela towards the provision of hous-ing, was acknowledged with a thanksgivingservice by the community of Eerste River.“A march was staged last year July, after

the residents were unhappy with the way inwhich housingwas being dealt with inWard17,” said Pastor Joseph Jansen.Many residents were denied housing as a

result of the City of Cape Town’s waiting listbeing outdated, with some residents havingmoved or passed away.Pastor Joseph Jansen, of the New Life

Community Church who headed the marchtook to the help of theMinister, to give bene-ficiaries the opportunity to apply for hous-ing subsidies in the Nuwe Begin project.However, the Minister proved to be ada-

mant and would not deviate.After numerous consultations, a total

number of 36 families were given the oppor-tunity to apply for housing, of which subsi-dies were approved for 21 families.

Minister Madikizela made it possible for11 families to spend Christmas 2012 in theirnew houses and an additional 10 familieswill be allocated houses by the end of Marchthis year.“I am very ecstatic and over themoon that

we can heal people’s hearts by bringing suchjoy and peace,” said Jansen.The community warmly received Madi-

kizela and the beneficiaries who moved intotheir new homes at a thanksgiving serviceat the New Life Community Church in BlueDowns on 17 February.This was done as a tribute for the efforts

and extent to which Madikizela went tomake sure that housing was provided.Jansen said, “We tend to judge people on

face value, because we don’t know how theythink. But he (Madikizela) did somethingagainst the prescribed criteria of the City ofCape town.“The servicewent verywell and thepeople

who attendedwere very excited. It was excit-ing to just have him (Madikizela) there.“Communication will continue between

the community and Minister.”

The quality of teaching and learning forvisually impaired learners at a BellvilleSouth school last week improved signifi-cantly, through a donation of three hightech devices.Ten portable Braille computers (the

BrailleNote Apex), a device for scanningand reading printed text and a portableMP3 player designed for blind users, weredonated to theAthloneSchool for theBlind.More thanR1millionwas invested by the

Western Cape Education Department(WCED), in this new technology, that wasalso donated to the Pioneer School in

Worcester.Learners from the Athlone School hail

from all over the peninsula.This donation follows a recent study by

the Directorate: Specialised EducationSupport in the WCED that looked at waysinwhich thedepartment could best supportblind learners by different technologies.The device allows learners to type text in

braille and to listen to the text via compu-ter-generated speech.Learners can readand listen to electronic

text in various formats, including PDF andWord files.Two devices that can scan and read text

to learners via built-in speakers, the Eye-Pal Solo, were also provided.Thedevices also allow learners to browse

the internet via Wi-Fi and connect to otherdevices through bluetooth.Gerhard Erasmus of Edit Microsystems,

who too is visually impaired, said oneof thebenefits is the conversion of electronic andhard copies to Braille.Donald Grant, Minister of Education in

the Western Cape, said this project is thefirst of its kind in Africa. “We are the sec-ond country in the world after the UK tohave this technology for our children,” hesaid.“This is going to change theway teachers

and learners interact and will change theway learners act with the outside world,”he said.Fletcher Fisher, headmaster, said the

staff are very excited over the new devices.“This excites us and it excites the chil-dren,” he said.He said these devices will make it possi-

ble for learners to listen to a document andsubsequently save a lot of time in the class-room.

The Kleinvlei police confirmed the arrestof four suspects, and confiscated four fire-arms and drugs after a shooting incidenton 14 February in Forest Park, Eerste Riv-er.The incident took place at around 07:30

and the Kleinvlei police, were alerted ofa shooting incident at a spaza shop in Cir-cle Road, Forest Park, Eerste River.It is alleged that a suspect entered the

shop, fired several shots at customers andfled the scene on a bicycle.Two schoolboys aged 11 and 17, who

were on their way to school, were wound-ed in the shooting, where the 11-year-oldboy was wounded in his left foot and the17-year-old boy was wounded in the stom-ach.Thanks to the assistance of the public,

the Kleinvlei SAPS were able to immedi-ately respond to the information providedregarding thewhereabouts of the suspect.The cluster commander, Brigadier Bea-

ton took the lead with members, andsearched a house in Broadway Street,Heather Park where they seized three9 mm pistols, one 38 mm revolver, a bagcontaining ammunition rounds and oneplastic bag containing tik.The SAPS members arrested the 33-

year-old female owner of the house andthree other males aged 17, 24 and 25.The suspects will appear in the Blue

DownsMagistrate’s Court on 15 Februaryon charges of attempted murder, posses-sion of illegal firearms and ammunition,and possession of drugs.The public played an important role in

providing police with the relevant infor-mation,which resulted in the arrest of thefour suspects, and the confiscation of ille-gal items. The Kleinvlei SAPS, would liketo thank and encourage the community.

The rich tradition of the “Christmas Choirs”is alive and well, as a new generation march-es to its beat.

For those who need explaining the choirin this instance are not voices, but the har-mony of stringed instruments like guitarsand banjos, cellos and in some instanceseven violins. And, added to this is the beauti-ful brass voices of saxophones, trumpets andtrombones.

On Sunday the Florida Park SportsGround was filled with excitement as The El-sies River and District Christmas Bands Un-ion held their annual competition.

Supporters came out in full-force to sup-port the smart uniforms and sounds of StTimothy’s from Facreton, Norwood Crusad-ers from Leonsdale, Star of Glad Tiding fromUitsig, Young Royal Crusaders from ElsiesRiver, Silver Stars from Leonsdale and PalmCrusaders from Ravensmead.

Llewellyn April, secretary of the union,pointed out that the competition consistedof various categories that involves youngand old.

“Everybody loves the Tiny Tots sectionwhen they take part in the best-dressed andgrand march past,” he says.

“The more serious side of things is in thejunior and senior divisions, especially whenit came to the prescribed music section.

“This year it was so tough that in the sen-iors’ section only one percent separated thetop two bands, Young Royal Crusaders pip-ping Norwood Crusaders at the post and StTimothy’s in third place.

“Royal Crusader were tops in the juniorsection, with Silver Stars second and Nor-wood in third place.”

April pointed out that all the supporterswere very pleased at the organisation of theevent, and that the union also takes a specialinterest in the youth to motivate the nextgeneration in this tradition.

The tiny tots from St Timothy’s won themarch past with Young Royal Crusaders sec-ond, and third shared by Norwood Crusad-ers, Star of Glad Tidings and Palm Crusad-ers.

The highest points for the junior sectionwent to Star of Glad Tidings followed by StTimothy and Palm Crusaders, third.

In the Senior section Palm Crusaders werevictorious followed by St Timothy and Nor-wood Crusaders in third place. The overallwinner on the day was St Timothy

The Kleinvlei community of Eerste Riversaw a major breakthrough when residentswere given the opportunity to apply forIdentity Documents (IDs).

This will entitle them to many privilegesand advantages, which have been impossi-ble to get hold of before.

This formed part of two phases, wherebyphase one was a survey done within theEerste River area to identify individualswho do not have IDs.

The initiative was organised by commu-nity worker Sophia Kannemeyer and for-mer councillor Achmat Williams.

Funding was provided out of the pocketof Williams who was present and volun-teered to take part in the campaign.

“People haven’t got the means to pay forphotos. We are improving service deliveryand carrying out our promises.

These are the times we need to give to the

people,” said Williams.Word of mouth was the medium in which

the registration news was spread.It will give residents access to banking fa-

cilities, applying for housing, social grantsand will see them included in time for thenext general elections.

Williams said: “People without IDs can’tgo vote but want to be part of the communi-ty and system.Wemadeourselves availableto support the community.”

By 11:00 onWednesday, 13February, over200 applicants had already been helped ina hall packed with hopefuls who have neverbefore been in possession of an ID docu-ment. Many were ecstatic and patient dur-ing the two hour wait.

“At the end of the day, it’s our love forthe people and the community,” said Wil-liams.

Phase two, will see those who have ap-plied for an ID, transported to Home Affairsin Bellville, to complete the process.

Hard-working and determined, The 4Mulaare preparing to launch their fresh newsound.

“The 4Mula is an original group and westarted five months ago,” explains EsrickNelson, the group’s vocalist.

Esrick is joined in the bandby bass player, Craig Potgieter,keyboardist Ruchen Christiansand Vinny Ortell, the DJ on syn-thensizers.

“We are artists with differentmusic backgrounds who havecombined to form an afro-pop group,” Esrickcontinues.

Vinny explains that the group membersall come from different music genres, and de-cided to combine the genres to create theirown sound.

Ruchen explains that they’ve all knowneach other for some time. He and Esrickwere together in a band before and had been

thinking of starting something new.Esrick explains that the wheels were set

in motion when their previous band record-ed a single with Vinny.

“We didn’t want a normal band sound,” hesays. That’s also why the group chose theirname.

Ruchen explains that the nameis open; allowing them to experi-ment with sounds instead of pi-geon-holing themselves.

Having worked in other bandsbefore, the group want to coverthe business side of the groupfirst.

The 4Mula will officially launch at Jam-rock Theatre on Thursday 28 February.Tickets cost R80.

The final round of the Metropolitan u-19 Premier Cup play-offs culminatedin the round robin stage held at Rock-

lands High School this past weekend. Thefinal round consisted of 28 teams fightingfor a spot in the coveted top 14, and a placein the prestigious tournament to be heldover the Easter weekend.

In the final play-off round, there wereteams who had progressed through the ear-lier play-off rounds, facing teams that hadpreviously participated in the tournament.

The groups were certainly not easy andthis resulted in a few surprises and somedrama as the weekend unfolded.

ActionFirst time qualifiers included RC Ath-

letico, Evertonians, Bothasig, Masidlaleand Atlantis Leeds. Both Cape Town AllStars and Atlantis Leeds had to rely on apenalty shoot-out in order to progress.

CT All Stars overcame Two OceansAcademy, while Atlantis Leeds held theirnerve against Glendene.

Milano United and Belhar Spurs playedto a rather lacklustre 0-0 draw in theirround robin match.

Milano got off to a good start as theymoved the ball around the park with au-thority, but were unable to capitalise on aneasy chance off a corner kick in the firsthalf.

Belhar Spurs firmed up their defenceand started dominating in the midfield. Mi-lano came close from a free-kick just out-side the box, forcing the Belhar keeper topunch the ball over the crossbar.
