While no arrests have yet beenmade in con-nection with the decapitated body recentlyfound in a Eerste River bush, police say theinvestigation is making significantprogress. This week the head of the body was dis-

covered by the investigation team, said po-lice spokesperson Warrant Officer Anna-cletta Mothoalo. The body of the man was found in a bush

in Devon Park on Saturday, 6 December. The body was found near a church by a

boy collecting wood and a pastor, who thencontacted the police.“On 12 December at about 01:00, ourmem-

ber received a complaint from the commu-nity saying that there was a skull lying nextto the place where the body was discovered.“Our members went to the scene and

found a skull. Itwas decomposed. Therewaslittle flesh on it and DNA tests will be con-ducted,” Mothoalo said. The body is believed to be that of a man

in his 30s.The man had tattoo marks on his body,

but is still unidentified. Two men was taken in for questioning on

9 and 10 December. The men were notcharged or arrested. The police said they still appeal to the

community for help in determining the mo-tive and cause of death.Mothoalo said they believe the attack on

the man was gang related. “We are stillsearching for suspects. Amurder case is be-ing investigated,” she confirmed.

’n Kalkfontein-tiener (15) is verledeweek in ’n vermoedelik bendever-wante aanval voor sy maats afge-maai.Die voorval het Vrydag 12 Desem-

ber in Elmariestraat, Kalkfonteinomstreeks 10:40 plaasgevind.Volgens kapt.

Niemand anders is be-seer nie.

Despite being assembled a stone’s throwaway fromKuils River, the city’s integratedtransportmodel – theMyCiti bus –might on-ly be heading this way in 2019.The iconic blue, grey and redbus is assem-

bled at the Busmark 2000 plant located alongWimbledon, Blackheath – less than a kilo-metre from Kuils River. At a meeting held in Highbury two weeks

ago, several residents requested to have thesystem implemented in the area in order tohelp alleviate traffic congestion. Most resi-dents complained about exiting the area togain access to the R300 highway.During the two hour meeting, a senior

traffic officer explained that ongoing devel-opment in the area had taken place, but thatthe area’s infrastructure failed to keep upwith the development.Kuils River – along with its surrounding

areas – is plagued by daily traffic congestionduring peak hours. Traffic along the R102(Van Riebeeck Road) and M12 (StellenboschArterial), it was established at the meeting, causes the most headaches.Details regarding the introduction of the

MyCiti rollout to Kuils River was sharedlast week by the City of Cape Town’s mayor-al committee member for transport, BrettHerron. He said Transport for Cape Town – the

City’s transport authority – has identified anumber of MyCiti routes to be rolled outacross the city from now until the year 2032to alleviate traffic congestion and to meetthe growing demand for scheduled publictransport that is safe, reliable and afforda-ble.“The proposed MyCiti routes for the next

18 years are identified in the Integrated Pub-lic Transport Network Plan that was ap-proved by Council on 25 June 2014,” Herronconfirmed. He said Kuils River will be served by two

MyCiti routes, provisionally called the T13and the T14.“Broadly speaking, the T13 will run from

Mitchells Plain to Bellville and Durbanvillevia Symphony Way; the T14 will run fromWestlake to Parow and Bellville via Retreat,Hanover Park and Epping.“The implementation date for these

routes however, is not confirmed as yet –safe to say it will probably only happen after2019,” Herron said.

CapeGate Shopping Centre was the place tobe last Wednesday evening.

Thewho’swhoof the city’s entertainmentmedia gathered with the glitterati for theworld premiere of the last film in theHobbittrilogy,TheBattle of theFiveArmies –averyapt unveiling of the first Imax movie thea-tre in Cape Town. This is the third Imaxtobeopened in the country, followingon thesuccesses in Durban and Pretoria.

Ster-Kinekor’s marketing executiveDoug Place says the cinema complex atCapeGate was selected as the most feasiblesite to accommodate the complex conver-sion to Imax, an experience he describes as“the world’s most immersive cinematic ex-perience”. “In an Imax theatre, you don’twatch a movie – you are in the movie. Youdon’t hear the sound, you feel it,” he says.

To provide audiences with maximum im-mersion, the cinema was transformed to in-

clude a floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall Im-ax screen, superior acoustical treatmentand Imax’s projection and sound technolo-gy. “Imax’s cutting-edge two-projection sys-tem delivers crystal-clear images, and withits customised theatre design and powerfuldigital sound system, creates a unique envi-ronment that makes audiences feel as ifthey are in the film.”

Giovanni Dolci, from the Imax Corpora-tion in Europe, said they are impressedwith the success of the first twoSA sites andlook forward to this new theatre achievingequally positive results. “We entered intothe initial partnership with Ster-Kinekorlast year with the belief that it would notonly raise our visibility in SouthAfrica, butalso set the stage for mutual growth oppor-tunities in the region,” he said.

A new car battery for only R50.This is how much one can pay for

a battery in Kuils River if one is inter-ested in scoring a bargain, the police say.Kuils River police spokesperson Captain

Isaac van Niekerk this week said theft ofbatteries out of motor vehicles is commonin the Kuils River area – Stellendale,Soneike, Rouxville, Highbury and Sarepta.“It is something that occurs often.“It is classified as part of our theft out of

motor vehicles,” he said.VanNiekerkadded that it’s a bigproblem.“Even at shopping centres and parking

areas,” he said.Van Niekerk said over the past six

months they had a total of 29 cases of batter-ies reported stolen.

Seven arrests“We have had some success. So far we

have had seven arrests.”VanNiekerk said the thievesmostlywork

alone and cannot be linked to a syndicate.“There was only one incident out of the

seven in which we arrested two suspects,”he said.He said the suspects normally sell the bat-

teries afterwards for next to nothing.“They sell it for R50. The people who then

buy it consider it a bargain.“We live in a community where people

claim to be law abiding citizens, but someof them still accept these so-called bar-gains,” he said.Monique Rossler, a Jagtershof-resident,

is one of those who suffered the fate. She said the battery of their Kia Work-

horse had been stolen six times since the be-

ginning of the year.Four of those incidents occurred at the

house, while one occurred at the CheckersShopping complex in Langverwacht, andthe other at the Spar in Van Riebeeck Road.“All four times at the house occurred in

the evening,” she said.

Tracker activatedThe last time it happened was two weeks

ago. Rossler informed people about the inci-dent on the neighbourhood watch’s Face-book page.“I came out of the house and noticed the

battery was gone.“The vehicle has a tracker, so when the

battery was removed it was activated,” shesaid. The tracker according to her, sent out a

SMS alert to the vehicle’s owner – her hus-band’s employee. The vehicle parks outside the family’s

house due it being too large for the garage.Rossler said the matter was reported to

the local police station.“But nothing happens, the police say

there’s nothing they can do,” she said.Van Niekerk pleaded with residents not

to accept batteries sold by individuals onthe streets.“People might consider it a bargain, but

someone else gets hurt when their propertyis stolen,” he said.“I do not know why they do it, maybe

they’re short on cash.”Van Niekerk said theft of batteries from

light delivery vehicles used to be a problemdue to batteries situated outside thevehicle.“This has decreased though.“No one will commit this crime if there

is no longer a drop off point or buyer,” VanNiekerk said.

The six mutulated bodies found dumped inKraaifontein last week is a grim reminderof what happens when a community takesthe law into their own hands.“I am fed up with crime and I believe that

everybody in Kraaifontein feels the same, but vigilante justice is not the answer,” saidGavin Riddles, chairman of the CommunityLaw and Order foundation in Kraaifontein.TygerBurger spoke to him after the dust

had settled on the gruesome mass murderof the men, at this stage believed to have

been the handiwork of a bundu court. The discovery of the bodies sent shockwa-

ves throughout the city.Themenwere found lined-up next to each

other, face down and hands and feet tied, in-dicative of an execution style murder.Bloodied rocks and rags of clothing were

found strewn around the bodies. Police be-lieve themenwere stoned to death and stab-bed with a sharp object. All six of the men aged between 18 and 30

hails from Wallacedene.

Parenting and how to deal with a fa-mily confrontation in a domestic en-vironment were discussed with menfrom Wesbank, Mfuleni and BlueDowns recently as part of the annual16 Days of Activism Campaign. The event, at which personnel

from the Stikland Hospital, churchleaders and the police addressed yo-ung and old in attendance was heldat the Mfuleni police station lastWednesday 10 December.Captain Nomathemba Muavha,

spokesperson for the Mfuleni police, said the men were invited to theevent as they are mostly regarded asthe perpetrators when it comes to is-sues of sexual assault and domesticviolence.“We tried to involve them in dis-

cussions in how to deal with diffe-rent issues such as parenting at ho-me and how to talk with their spou-ses,” Muavha said.Speaking about how to maintain a

healthy family life, Kurt Dixon, a cli-nical psychologist at the StiklandHospital, gave the men the opportu-nity to share some of the issues theyare often confronted with, and waysthey deal with it. “I wanted to provi-de a space to talk about issues menfind difficult to speak about and sohopefully breakdownsomebarriers,as well as teach basic mindfulnessskills,” Kurt said afterwards.“I didn’t want to be ‘preaching’ but

rather get the participants to thinkabout their life in a different way.“The way that I had aimed to do

thiswas through small group discus-sions, breathing exercises to developawareness of self and bodily reacti-

ons, which is essential tomanage an-ger and stress,” Kurt explained.By listening to what the men had

to say and by responding in a parti-cular way, he also validated theiremotional experience, thereforebringing in an element of non-judg-ment. “By using a narrative I had ho-ped to demonstrate the inter-genera-tional transmission of trauma andthat violent behaviour occurswithina context spanning across generati-ons.“There were different responses.

Some were grateful for the space tobeable to speakwhile othershadqui-te strong views about how men’sneeds were not being catered for. Iwas able to use those responses to de-monstrate that throughmindful bre-athing one can be more in control ofone’s responses to stressful situati-ons,” Kurt said.

Therewas a celebratorymood at the launchofUWC’snewDesmondTutuCentre for Spi-rituality and Society on Tuesday 2 Decem-ber.The Centre is seen as the culmination of

a consensus-based process to supplementthe University’s Desmond Tutu Chair forEcumenical Theology and Social Transfor-mation.Working hand in hand, the Chair and the

Centre would, in the words of Chair incum-bent Professor Christo Lombard, “engagewith the Tutu legacy in civil society”.The Centre’s began in 2006 when the Uni-

versity kick-started its plans to establishthe Desmond Tutu Chair. That chair, it wasenvisioned, would honour the legacy ofArchbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu - whohad served as UWC Chancellor for almost25 years - through teaching and research as-pects of the Tutu legacy in theology and so-cial transformation. The Chair took a while to start, but was

finally established as a rotating chair in2012. A year later, Lombard, on his retire-ment from the university’s Department ofReligion and Theology, was appointed asthe incumbent after he had shared dutieswith two other scholars during the prece-ding year.Much was expected of Lombard. Not only

was he set the task of turning the Chair intoa fully endowed one, but he was also to di-rect efforts to establish what would becomethe Desmond Tutu Centre for Spiritualityand Society.Last week, Lombard ticked both boxes on

his to-do list. (Fund-raising efforts will con-tinue, however.)The Centre’s aims are ambitious. Firstly,

it aspires to “honour, treasure and sustainthe vision and legacy” of the former Chan-cellor through engagement between UWCand religious groups and organisations,

and civil society. Secondly, the Centrewould pull together projects and themes ini-tiated in the Department of Religion andTheology, such as ecumenical studies andsocial ethics, under the Centre’s broad goalto investigate the role of religion and spiri-tuality in civil society in South Africa. At the launch Arts Faculty Dean Profes-

sor Duncan Brown said Tutu “was alwaysto me a profound example of humanity, hu-mility, humour and grace”.“We have become what we now are as a

consequence of the fact that ‘the Arch’ iswith us,” added Rector Professor BrianO’Connell. And in his public lecture on Desmond Tu-

tu’s Style of Ethical Leadership, it was Lom-bard who explored the contributions of oneof South Africa’s most beloved public figu-res.“He has a canny ability to bring synergy

where others see only opposition or diffe-rence,” said Lombard. “His leadership wastransformative. It was definitely a form ofservant leadership. It was inclusive and af-firming of his co-workers, but it also had avery disciplined side to it, including prayerand meditation and dedication to the task.”In spelling out the Centre’s many tasks,

objectives and programmes, ProfessorErnst Conradie, Chairperson of the Depart-ment of Religion and Theology, highlightedthe part that community engagement willplay in the life of the Centre. This engage-mentwill by and large revolve around colla-borations with faith-based organisations(FBOs) and, through them, community or-ganisations. “These faith-based organisati-ons are the dynamos of social change,” Con-radie explained. For more information about the centre

Don’t give‘ChristmasBox’ tocity staffThe City of Cape Town has made it clearthat solicitation of Christmas donations bymunicipal staff is forbidden. Any contribu-tions are purely voluntary.

“The City of Cape Town would like to ad-vise residents that the solid waste manage-ment department enforces a policy whichstrictly forbids its personnel from askingresidents for ‘Christmas boxes’ and solici-ting any donations. Staff have been remin-ded that this practice is prohibited.

“If, however, residents believe that excel-lent service has been provided, they are ofcourse at liberty to give a voluntary donati-on to staff as a gesture of thanks and good-will, but under no circumstances shouldthey be approached and asked for money.

“City staff are appropriately remunera-ted. It would be appreciated if residentscould report any incidents of intimidationby City staff to the call centre on 0860 103089 during office hours. Apart from the da-te, time, and place, a vehicle registrationnumber should be provided so that the cul-prits can be identified. Such reports will beinvestigated immediately and, where resi-dents are willing to testify, the City will beable to take disciplinary action against theoffenders,” says the City’s mayco memberfor utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg.

Refuse collection services will remainunchanged during the festive period, evenon public holidays.

“Due to there being less traffic on the ro-ads during the holiday period, collection te-ams might arrive at their premises earlierthan usual. It is therefore best that resi-dents place their bins out before 06:00 du-ring this time,”says Sonnenberg.

Residents are also advised that all drop-off facilities will be closed on ChristmasDay and New Year’s Day.V For any other solid wasterelated service queries, residents can contact the City’s call centre on 0860103 089.

Over 90% of nine-year-old girls in the Wes-tern Cape are now protected against HPVrelated cervical cancer.

This is the result of an HPV vaccinationcampaign, organised by provincial healthin collaboration with primary schools.

Western Cape health minister TheunsBotha stated, “The uptake by all role play-ers of the immunisation has been wonder-ful. HPV related cervical cancer is respon-sible for the death of many young women. We hope that through this vaccination, when these young girls are wives and mo-thers, we will see a significant decline inthe incidence of HPV related cervical can-cer.

“This not only speaks into our goal of im-proving the wellness of our society, but alsoto the financial implications for house-holds who need to care for a family memberwho is ill. Well done to all those involvedin achieving this remarkable coverage.”

The HPV campaign took place in tworounds, the first round saw coverage of 87%whereas the second round in October foundthat not only had a number of girls becomeeligible for the vaccination, but many moreparents signed consent forms thus enablingtheir daughters to be vaccinated. Thissmall group (approximately 13% of the totalgroup), will receive their booster shot du-ring the 2015 campaign which will take pla-ce in February and March and again in Sep-tember and October.

Immunisation is available free of chargeat all health facilities and at a number ofpartner organisations. The Human Papillo-mavirus (HPV) immunisation is currentlyonly offered to girls attending publicschools and are nine years old during Gra-de 4. Parents wishing to have their olderdaughters vaccinated can consult their lo-cal pharmacy.

The Danny Abrahams Ex FootballersFund is the birth of a project aiming toassist old players who are in dire need

of financial assistance.Ivan Jack (Elsies River) and Douglas Ka-

relse (Kraaifontein) are themasterminds be-hind the fund and are trying to relieve somepressure off their former teammates.Jack played for Elsies River from 1970 to

1992 and Douglas played professional soccerfor Cape Town Spurs from 1970 to 1988.“We applied to register the fund as a NPC

(non-profit company) some four months agoandwegot thegreenlight lastweek.Thiswillreally help us in our cause to approach com-panies and individuals to sponsor us in anyway they see fit,” said Jack.Former Cape Town Spurs star Danny

Abrahams was the initial spur for the fund.Abrahams, who struggles financially andhas Alzheimers, has benefited greatly fromhis friends.“It’s difficult to see howyour former team-

mate struggles. Dougie and I said we can’tjust sit back and watch him and other play-ers struggle theway they do.We felt the urgeto jump in and help,” Jack says.“It’s a great feeling, helping them in wha-

tever way we can. Every now and then wewill host a dance and raise a bit of moneyfor these chaps. We are hoping to get somesponsors in thenewyear to assist us in bette-ring their lives.“Having said that, we are very positive we

can get some sponsors on board, there is so-me interest from companies and individualswanting to get involved but we had to waitto get registered as aNPC. Now that we havethe papers, it is all systems go. We will also

approach Safa and see if they can help us inany way possible,” he said. The fund committee will also have a

monthly meeting and see who they can as-sist in that given month.“Sometimeswewill just go and have a cup

of tea and chat about the good old days. Itis truly heart warming to help these guysand see how thankful they are. This is whywe dowhatwe do. To be there for our friendsand help make life just a little bit better onegood deed at a time,” said Karelse.Phone Ivor Jack on 083 241 5847 of Douglas

Karelse on 084 286 1292 to get involved withthe fund or make any contributions.

tjie-sege Montrose (112) druipstert huistoe gestuurnáveral stewige bydraes deurGiovanni Hulley (4/20), Dillon Verreyne

(44) enChristiaanMocke (34*).

Bellville val weer lelik vas

meer as 600 km beslis.

vaart by Hobie-strand op Plettenbergbaai

en eindig dit by Santos-strand in Mossel-baai, 188,5 km verder. Die strand-kontrole-punte is by Nature’s Valley, The Waves,Brenton-on-Sea, Swartvlei, Wildernis,Glentana,Grootbrakrivier enKleinbrakri-vier.

Die tra-disionele aandresies vind vanjaar by

Sports facilities across the Cape are fall-ing prey to the acts of brazen vandalsand thieves.

A total of 55 sports complexeswere vandal-ised and burgled between April and Novem-ber. A staggering 217 incidents were report-ed during this period, the city confirms.Sports clubs and facility management

committees are calling on the city to step upsecurity, as they fear the continuous crimi-nal activities may stifle or end operations atthe organisations and facilities.Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the Rygate

Local Football Association (LFA) whichcalls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Ry-lands its home, says vandals stripped the fa-cility in the first week of October – only acouple of weeks after the end of the footballseason. He claims the damage amounts toR200 000, a cost they cannot cover.“The interior of the clubhouse was

stripped bare. All the cabling and wiringwas removed. The wiring of the floodlightswas also removed and the electricity box re-moved and damaged,” Bailey says.Similarly, chairperson of the Metropoli-

tan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropoli-tan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hit

at the end of October. The facility wasstripped to resemble a shell and the organi-sation had to replace the trophies and med-als for its annual prizegivingdays before the event.“Everything was fine dur-

ing the season, except for theodd burglary, but when theseason ended and there wasless activity at the facility, the criminals pounced.“The MFMC is constantly

reminded that it is not theowner of the facility, but on-ly the custodians. Yet theowner, the city, doesn’t takeresponsibility for its assets.”In local sporting circles,

Weitz adds, there has beentalk of several facilities being vandalisedover the last couple of months. “There wasa time when security guards were placed atthe facility, but they informed us their con-tract had come to an end and that was theend of security,” he explains.“The city spends millions upgrading and

maintaining facilities, so I believe theyshouldprotect it or theworkwill beuseless.”TygerBurger has reported on incidents at

the Wesbank Sports Complex, DurbanvilleSports Complex and Ruyterwacht Sports

Complex, while its sister publicationCityVi-sion reported on incidents at the Gugulethuand Philippi swimming pools.

Furthermore, it’s othersister publication, People’sPost has reported on burgla-ry and vandalism at severalsports facilities across thepeninsula over the last cou-ple of months. These includethe Stephan Reagan, Rock-lands and Strandfonteinsports complexes, andSwartklip Indoor SportsCentre in Mitchell’s Plain, the Hoosain Parker SportsComplex in Parkwood andthe Johnson Road SportsComplex. Burglary and van-

dalism were also reported at clubhouses atKraaifontein Sports Complex.Despite the number of incidents, the city

says it cannot provide continuous securitypresence.Mayco member for community services

and special projects, Belinda Walker, says a“limited budget” of R36m was allocated forsecurity in the department budget.“The department has had to rationalise

the use of security personnel at some of itsfacilities to remain within the allocated

budget in the current financial year,” shesays.“The departmentmanages a large number

of public facilities across the city and hasidentified hotspots where facilities are par-ticularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism– security personnel will be present at thesefacilities. It is closelymonitoring these facil-ities to find the most effective and financial-ly sustainable options for securing them.”But security guards aren’t the only option,

Walker adds, as the city has invested consid-erably in fences and alarms. It is also work-ing to create partnerships with communityorganisations such as neighbourhoodwatches to help deter theft and vandalism. The city has spent R4,8m on repairs and

replacements at facilities which have fallenvictim to theft and vandalism, Walker says.“This is money that could have been put

to better use to either upgrade these facili-ties or provide additional facilities in areaswhere there are limited or no sport and rec-reation facilities,” she says.“Now, more than ever, we need our com-

munities to work with us and take owner-ship of their recreational spaces. We urgeresidents to report any suspicious behav-iour immediately.”V Report incidents anonymously on the tollfreenumber 0800 225 669.
