distrik in gemeenskappe geleë is waar sosio-ekonomiese omstandighede ’n uitdagingbied.

Distrik skop stof in ander se oë

According to the national childhood im-munisation schedule children are given thetetanus and reduced strength of diphtheriavaccine, alsoknownas theTDvaccineat theage of six, followed by another round at theage of 12 years.“I want to urge parents to ensure that

their children receive these vaccinations, which is administered via an injection intheir upper arm. Prevention is always bet-ter than cure.“Also, our clinics offer these immunisati-

Totsiens aan misdadigers, hallo aan vrolike kleutersRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

Ná jarelange diens in die polisie verruilsy nou haar daaglikse interaksie meternstige misdadigers eerder vir dié

met kinders.Sers.

In die jongste voorval verlede Saterdagog-gend is ’n vrou by haar huis in ConstantiaPark deur twee mans oorval.

City rotatesshedule forblack outs

As of 1 February, the City of Cape Townwill implement a new load sheddingschedule when load shedding is decla-

red by Eskom. The current schedule using the days of the

week was first implemented in 2008 and hasbeen regularly updated since. It was desig-ned for occasional load shedding duringpeak demand times.

“Since the latter weeks of last year, Es-kom’s national control centre declared loadshedding on a regular basis and over wee-kends. This has led to a situation where so-me residents repeatedly experienced sche-duled power outages at the most inconve-nient times and days of the week.

“In order to address this matter, the Cityhas set up anew load shedding schedule thatprovides a more frequent rotation and is tobe implemented in accordancewith the daysof the month instead,” says City maycomember for utility services, Ernest Sonnen-berg.

With thisnewschedule, theCitywill ensu-re residents experience scheduled power ou-tages at a different time and week day thanbefore, rotating the inconvenience of poweroutages across all supply areas.

“From 1 February, the City will be imple-menting load shedding according to thisnew schedule when it is instructed to do sobyEskom. An insertwith the new load shed-ding schedule and an area map of the diffe-rent supply areas across the city will be dis-tributed with local newspapers during thelast week of January. Residents are advisedto keep these and refer to the schedule andmap so they can take thenecessaryprecauti-ons,” says Sonnenberg.

The City has also developed a mobile ver-sion of the load shedding page which resi-dents can access by selecting the new tab onthe City’s mobile homepage. Individual de-tailed maps of the different areas are availa-ble in PDF and JPG format; by selecting thearea numbers of the PDF area map, resi-dents will be able to view their areas.

Residents can get information about loadshedding from the following sources:

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword. The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though. We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts, locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

The introduction of the newgreen lidded wheelie bins forrecycled waste in the Bellvillearea was an excellent innovati-on. This has given all the localresidents a chance to getinvolved in a useful project.Unfortunately, there alwaysseems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Thisis soon followed by a stream ofstrangers who inspect the binsfor useful material. Theirpreference seems to be bottlesand similar saleable objects. Ihave no problem with thesegentlemen collecting thismaterial and disposing of itsomewhere for remuneration. After all we are all endeavou-ring to eke out a living. What Ido feel strongly about is whenthey sit in the park to sort theirsaleable material and leave alltheir discarded mess behind forlocal residents to clean up. Mybiggest concern, however, isthat if this practice escalatesand there is little left in therecycle bins, it would no longerbe profitable for the recyclecompany to continue this verynecessary service.

The homeless problem inBellville is now becomingchronic and if this matter is notseriously attended to we willsoon be having more peopleliving on the streets than in thehouses.

I am disappointed to see howmany shops are opening onChristmas Day and Boxing Day(a day traditionally meant forgiving gifts to employees butinstead, those employees arebeing made to work). Fruit andVeg in Pinehurst as an examp-le. Whether you are Christianor not this is a day normallyspent with family by themajority of South Africans, butnow junior staff are beingexpected to work on these dayswhile senior staff sit at homewith their families. This showsno compassion for staff mem-bers and their personal lives. Itis different if you work inessential services, but a super-market has no need to be open. What happened to the dayswhen stores shut on Sundays? Now shops must be open asoften as possible for as long aspossible, so the guys sitting athome with their families canmake more money. Let yourstaff go home and spend it withtheir families.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Wanneer jy mense daardiereg wil ontneem, maak jy jouself skuldigaan fundamentalisme. Dit is wanneeremosie alle rasionele denke vernietig.

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’sEnrichment Centre in Durbanville is dueto take place on 12 February at the BellvilleGolf Club.

The centre is set to open this month andthe organisation is in desperate need of do-nations.

The idea of the centre came about whenthe parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spas-tic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairmentas well as epilepsy, struggled to find aschool or daycare centre that would be ableto accommodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, a full-time caregiver took care of him. After reali-sing there is a need for such a school in thenorthern suburbs, Pierre’s parents decidedto open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church inDurbanville has made five Sunday schoolclass rooms available in which the centrecan start.

The format of the golf day is a four-ballalliance (two scores to count). To enter afour-ball at R2 000, contact Laetitia on 082876 1763 or send an email to [email protected]. Companies can also spon-sor a hole for R500.

TRANS AGULHAS: INDOMITABLE PAIR BEAT FASTER CLASS

Boaters power to a winANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The two were momentarily suspendedin the air.Underneath them the power boat ro-

ared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is al-

ways a close call,” states the pilot noncha-lantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised. It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul. Pilot and co-pilot StefanLindeque and Tony Ingram hoped the131km stretch from Gansbaai to Strandwould be calmanduneventful, but they alsoknew that power boating beyond the waveswas never really “calm and uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thusnot surprisedwhen the

waters became choppier. For 10 kmnearCapeHangklip their endu-

rance was tested to the limits – this afterthey completed 188km on day one, 86km onday two, 161km on day three and 111km onday four.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. Thepoundingwaterwas extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says Stefanfrom Table View.At that stage they knew they stood a chan-

ce of not only winning their class, but alsotrumping the faster modified powerboatclass – something never achieved before. But if one of them was thrown overboard

then their chances would be scuppered. After a moment that seemed to last an

eternity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan

also returned to the inflatable Nulandis. That was close...

Home stretchTheir backswere aching, their armswere

numb, but they were not going to give up.He adds that day three of theTransAghul-

has near Witsand is mentally the toughest. For Stefan, however, Cape Hangklip was

the pinnacle of physical perseverance. But their determination ensured the final

push proceeded without a hitch.Suddenly it was all over. They reached

the shoreandcrownedoverallwinnerswitha time of nine hours and 51 minutes.“We were in a different class, and the mo-

dified class, which is faster than ours, al-ways win the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any

of their previous ones, of which there aremany. The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Championon three occasions andhasneverregretted choosing the sport in 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, sur-

fing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race insi-de the surf line andwas drawn to it. I’m justbasically looking for any excuse to get intothe ocean.”Hours in the gym to strengthen his core

muscles, arms and back has paid off and itis clear Stefan is a long way from hangingup his power boating boots. The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackerman, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.

Stefan Lindeque and Tony Ingram were recently crowned overall champions of the tough TransAghulhas inflatable boat race. PHOTO: HEINRICH SAUER
