Teenagers from Kuils River weretaught various life skills over the Ju-ne holiday – lessons for which they

obtained certificates. The programme they completed forms

part of a local church’s community youthproject, Pastor Dawn Burke, co-leader ofthe Kingdom of God Ministries Internatio-nal in Sarepta, said.

The project started a year ago. This yearthe project ran from Monday 29 June toSunday 5 July.

Burke, a teacher at The Hague PrimarySchool in Delft, said the children weretaught skills in dancing, drama, singing, music, multi-media and cooking and ba-king.

“The cooking and baking workshops we-re facilitated by Pick n Pay Riverpark, thedancing by Dominique Burke, the singingby Leigh-Anne Daniels, music by MikaelDavids and Rico-John Davids, while themulti-media was done by Marvin Dansterand the drama by myself.

“We also had different awareness work-shops in conflict management, substanceabuse, personal hygiene and etiquette andsafety,” Burke explained.

She said her aim with the communityyouth project is to invest and add value tothe lives of the youth so that they can deve-lop into model citizens of the country andin return pour value back into their com-munities.

She described this year’s project as a hu-ge success.

“Parents could come the Saturday eve-ning and watch how the youth displayedtheir various skills on stage. They receivedtheir certificates of attendance and a smallgift on Sunday evening.

“I pray that God will bless our childrenaccross the globe,” Burke says.

She said both of them were lucky to escapethe shooting unscathed.

“At that point you feel kind of numb, youare not sure. I thought about it later theevening and realised it was actually veryhorrific, that crime came so close to me,”she told TygerBurger.

Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincialpolice spokesperson, said the shoot-out bet-ween the police and the suspects followedafter police received reports of a hijackedvehicle.

“The suspects were travelling in a repor-tedly hijacked Toyota Corolla. Three peo-ple were in the hijacked vehicle, and threeother hijacking suspects were travelling inanother vehicle.

“During the shooting one of them was fa-tally wounded. One was injured and takento a nearby hospital for medical treatmentand the other four arrested,” van Wyk said.

The police say two firearms, along withthe vehicle, and another car were seized.

No police members were injured duringthe shooting.

The four arrested suspect are aged bet-ween 22 and 25 years and have been detai-ned on charges of unlicensed and prohibi-ted firearms, illegal ammunition and a sto-len vehicle.

Kuils River police are inviting membersof the community to attend a publicmee-ting regarding vigilantism to be held la-ter this month.Sergeant Liesel Beukes, police mem-

ber, said the meeting will take place onThursday 16 July at 19:00 at KalkfonteinPrimary School.V For more information contact the Kuils Riverpolice on 021 900 2800.

Vigilantism the topic of public meeting

The City of Cape Town issued a warning re-cently, following reports of a housing scam.In the statement the City urges residents

not to fall victim of the scam which havebeen reported in parts across the city.Anyone who has been affected they say,

should report to the matter to the police forinvestigation. “I call on the residents not tobe misled by con-artists who are runninghousing scams and to report the matter tothe authorities as soon as they become awa-re of it,” said Benedicta van Minnen, Maycomember for human settlements. Some residents have fallen victim to the

scams and have indeed “bought” land orhousing units which were promised to themthrough these illegal sales, van Minnen ex-plained.

“The City has also been informed that so-me of the culprits are operating with unaut-horised documents, which contain the Cityof Cape Town’s official logo.”Some have made claims in the media that

they were sold housing units by people whoclaim to be from the City’s human settle-ments directorate. “After money is paid forthese promised housing units or piece ofland, the culprits disappear, taking withthem the money,” van Minnen added. She said it has been reported to the City

that in some cases, after residents have paidmoney for an erf, the scammers would sendan SMS, “allocating” an “erf number” to theduped person.“It saddens me to hear about such cases.

Residents must note that, should a person

qualify in terms of the national criteria fora subsidy, they must not pay any money toanyone to beplaced on thehousingdatabase,or to receive a house,” said van Minnen. The City’s housing allocation policy ma-

kes provision for qualifying applicants wholive in any given area to be considered forhousing opportunities in housing projectsacross the city, she added.“Beneficiaries of newhousing projects are

drawn, on a project specific percentage ba-sis, from qualifying applicants who are re-gistered on the housing database from thearea where the development is being under-taken, but also from qualifying applicantsresiding outside of the boundaries of a givendevelopment.“This is to ensure that the allocation of the

housing opportunities is fair, and equitablefor all applicants on the database, irrespecti-ve of the area in which they reside.”Applicants are urged to contact the local

housing office to update their details on thedatabase so that they can be contacted whena housing opportunity arises.“I also ask those who are not registered to

find out whether they qualify for a subsidi-sed house and if so, to apply to register onthe database,” van Minnen said.Applications can be done at the City’s

walk-in centre in Wale Street, Cape Town,or the housing kiosk on the second floor ofthe Civic Centre in Hertsog Boulevard.V Alternatively contact the call centre on 021 4440333 or apply online at http://web1.capetown.gov.za/web1/HWL2012Online

City warns residents of new housing scam

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

“Get our youth away fromgangs!” That is the strongmes-sage from the station comman-

der of Bellville South, Lieutenant Colo-nel Karen Vorsatz who has noted withconcern the increase in involvement ofyouth in gang activities.“There are a variety of reasons why

our youth are getting into these groupsand wemust start combating this attrac-tion,” she says.“For many of the there is the desire to

obtain friendship and access to drugs, money and girlfriends. There are alsothosewho are rebellious against their fa-mily and in some cases where family isalready involved it is to uphold familytradition. In certain areas they join toprotect themselves fromviolence, but so-me also join to take revenge against tho-se they believe have wronged them.“There are also instanceswhere adults

deliberately involve children in crimeand gangs in order to protect themselvesfrom being held accountable.”Vorsatz said parents must spot the

warning signs. “Parents and care-giversmust be aware of when their childrenstart wearing gang style clothing. They

also start getting involved with a newgroup of friends and neglect long-timefriends and acquaintances.“Many of them start using hand signs,

gang style nicknames and a different sty-le of language or they have an interestin gangster rap. There’s also significantchanges in their behaviour and attitude, withdrawal, secrecy and and disrespectfor authority.”She added it was important to educate

children about gang problems duringtheir pre-school years and to make surethey understand that some people arenot good and that gangs are bad.To limit the child’s risk of involvement

parents should enrol their children in af-ter-school programmes, sports, art andculture, community organisations or re-ligious groups.“Meet your children’s friends and pa-

rents. Don’t allow your child to wear, write or gesture any gang associatedgraffiti markings signs or symbols.“Teach your child about the negative

consequences of gang involvement andcriminal behaviour. Let them know thatgang members are likely to end up seri-ously injured or dead.”She concluded by pointing out that pa-

rents should not make the mistake of de-laying their suspicions.

The art of skilfully folding pieces of paperinto all sorts of shapes, is slowly butsurely beginning to take shape in Wes-

bank. This practice, thanks to the generous help

and coaching of one woman, Kyoko Morgan,is aimed at building the already creativeminds of local teenagers.Kyoko, a Japanese national who moved to

South Africa 23 years ago, has been teach-ing youngsters in the crime-ridden area forover three years how to fold papers as partof her origami class. It is here, as part ofa school holiday programme, where theyare taught how to fold paper into books, wallets or swans.Origami, from ‘ori’ meaning folding, and

‘kami’ meaning paper, is the art of paperfolding which is often associated with theJapanese culture, according to the onlineencyclopaedia, Wikipedia.

Free classes offeredKyoko, founder and director of Origami

for Africa, started teaching children at theWesbank No 1 Primary School as part of aholiday programme. The programme wassoon expanded and now offers free classesto more teenagers at the Multi-purposeCentre during school holidays.“I used to do origami as a child and as

you grow up you do not forget. It is like agame for children in Japan.“I was asked to do it at schools and also

did it with the awaiting trial youths atPollsmoor Prison,” Kyoko said. Apart fromthis, she also taught children displaced asa result of the recent xenophobic attacks.“From their reactions I then realised that

origami actually helps to empower chil-dren, it gives them confidence.“I never thought of it before, but realised

that for some childrenhere it is interesting, they find it magical and it is also healing.“It is a great activity people can do either

by themselves or socially,” Kyoko said. Her aim now is to bring origami to town-

ships and underprivileged communitiessuch as Wesbank.“It is good for all, it helps you physically,

mentally and intellectually,” Kyoko said. The activity, she explains, though not as

action-packed as ball games appeal to bothboys and girls.“Their reaction vary.”

Sharing her skillsHer aim is to train children locally who

can in turn teach others.Ayanda Mpikwa (14) from Leiden High

School in Delft, are one of those students.“I have been doing it for about four years

now. When I started I did not really under-stand origami. When I am down and feelstressed, I take a piece of paper and fold it,it relaxes you,” Ayanda said.He said over theyears origamihas taught

him to concentrate and pay close attentionto many other aspects of his life. “It alsohelps to discipline us,” he added.Kyoko said: “Some shapes have six steps,

others have 600. There is slow progression, and that is what I think makes it so excit-ing.”A group of Wesbank teenagers will be

showing off some of their origami skills tomembers of the public at the IzikoMuseumin Cape Town this week.V Contact Kyoko on [email protected]

LEGAL DEDUCTIONS FROM SOCIAL GRANTS

The SASSA Payment Card

Which Deduction Is Legal?

How can SASSA assist social grant beneficiaries with illegal deductions?

Safety tips for all social grant beneficiaries:

one

0800 60 10 11

Western Cape Helpline @ (021) 469 0235 or 0800 60 10 11.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), would like to provide communities with the

following information regarding social grant deductions:

The SASSA branded payment card, was introduced to allow social grant beneficiaries the convenience of

accessing their social grant anywhere and at any time. The SASSA payment card is a debit card and

allows for cash to be withdrawn from ATM's, purchases to be made from suppliers and legal deductions to

be made. The introduction of the SASSA payment card into the banking system unfortunately also

provided an opportunity for social grant beneficiaries to be exploited through unauthorized deductions.

Before the social grant is paid into the bank account of a beneficiary only deduction is allowed to be

made for a funeral policy, which may not exceed 10% of the total value of the social grant. This premium is

deducted by SASSA before the social grant is paid to the beneficiary and then paid over to the relevant

insurance company.

Once the social grant is paid into the bank account that is linked to the SASSA debit card, legal deductions

instituted by financial entities will take effect for purchases that were made ie: airtime, electricity, micro-

loans, credit instalments, policy premiums etc. Any disputes should be resolved directly between the social

grant beneficiary and the entity that instituted the deduction.

Social grant beneficiaries are requested to report any illegal deductions to the nearest SASSA

office/service point where they will be assisted to complete a claim form so that the matters can be

investigated. Alternatively beneficiaries can contact the SASSA call centre @ where

SASSA staff will record the relevant details and refer the matter for investigation. Where beneficiaries have

not authorized deductions or for their SASSA cards/account details to be used by others, the deducted

amounts will be paid back to them. This is usually done within a period of 3 working days. Should any

social grant beneficiary not receive the required assistance from a SASSA office or staff member this must

be reported to the office manager or the

• Do not to respond to SMS messages offering airtime, electricity and other services. By responding

to these messages, beneficiaries are actually taking on a "subscription" service and the amounts

will be deducted off the bank account through the EFT debit system every month.

• Do not use your SASSA payment card as security for loans and to purchase any financial services

products.

• Do not authorize deductions to be made against your card except for the one funeral policy

deduction that should not exceed 10% of the social grant value.X1Q9Q24H-AL080715

A Kuils River runs through it ...Cape Town photographer Dillon Marsh took several photos of the meandering Kuils River, capturingmany faces of the often tranquil, but sometime polluted river.

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

Ever wondered where the Kuils Riveroriginates, or perhaps where exactly itends up? Often wondered how long, wi-

de, dirty or clean it is?Well perhaps this is somethingCapeTown

photographer Dillon Marsh can shed somelight on.Marsh, a professional photographer, re-

cently took a series of photos capturing thedifferent parts of this meandering river –from Durbanville to where it eventuallyruns out into the sea at False Bay.The photos, 16 in total, form part of the

photographer’s landmarks portfolio, entit-led “A Matter of Course”.

Finding the source“From the source in the affluent suburb

of Durbanville, it passes through the starksuburb of Kuils River, to which it gives itsname. It then continues past the poor far-ming communities of Blue Downs, the infor-mal settlement of Khayelitsha and finallythe peripheral suburb of Macassar where itexits into the Atlantic Ocean in False Bay,”Marsh describes the story of the river on hiswebsite.Asked what motivated him to undertake

the project, he commented: “I have oftendriven through the town of Kuils River, andthe river itself has always intrigued me. Itis obviously a major feature of the town, butits banks have been fortified with concreteand people seem to avoid interacting withit.”Two years ago he decided he wanted to

find out more about the river.“So I followed it from its source to its

mouth. The fact that it passed throughsoma-

ny different settlementsmade for an interes-ting progression, and because it’s heavilypolluted, the river also seemed to have thecharacter of an outcast,” explained Marsh, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Artfrom the University of Stellenbosch. The photo series was completed towards

the beginning of 2013.“I worked on it on and off, over a three-

month duration.”He did so by driving around the area near

the river, finding places where the road ca-

me close enough to the river or crossed overthe river.“I did walk along the small sections of the

river, but I did not stray too far from mycar,” he added.

SolitudeOne of the things, he explained, that

struck him most was the river’s solitude.“It just seems to pass bywithout people re-

ally noticing it or interacting with it.“This may of course be due to the fact that

it is quite polluted, but it paints a sad pictu-re,” he said.He added: “All I really want to draw atten-

tion to is the river that seems to have beenforgotten. I cannot realistically expect myphotos to enforce positive change to the pol-luted nature of the river, butmaybe they canhelp people become more aware of their na-tural surrounding and treat their environ-ment with more care.”V To view the rest of the photos visit www.dillonmarsh.com/amatterofcourse

paar slaggate.Weens finansiële redes kon synie na plekke toer soos Kanada, Kroasië enZambië nie.“Ek bly positief en glo ek gaan nog eendag

wel finansiële ondersteuningkry enmy landoorsee verteenwoordig. Ek is baie trots opmy prestasie vroeër vanjaar in Johannes-burg toe ek my land verteenwoordig het en’n silwermedalje gewenhet inAfrika se sone6-kampioenskap.

Droom“My grooste droom wat ek baie graag wil

Rhoda is eenvandie redeshoekomsy so suk-sesvol is.

tified as a leader and duly attended two pres-tigious leadership programmes inNewYorkCity, in 2011 and 2012.When Kat returned from the USA, he used

left-over pocket money from his trip over-seas to buy soccer boots and shin guards foran underprivileged deaf soccer team, thePhillipi Deaf Stars. This gesture was so well received that the

schoolboy swiftly launched a non-profit or-ganisation designed to assist township chil-dren with a passion for sports to receive therequisite equipment. The NPO, Katleho’s Give2Talent, also

knownasKG2T, has as its primary objectivethe donation of sports equipment to teamsand individuals from previously disadvan-taged areas. Others that have received fromKG2T thus far include u-15 soccer squadsfrom Klipheuwel FC, Naledi Stars FC andLiverpool-Portland FC.Kat has now progressed into the sport of

cricket, where in conjunction with DistrictNorth Cricket and the Peninsula CricketAcademy in Bellville, he has embarked ona drive to collect second-hand, unwanted orunused cricket equipment for re-distribu-tion to under-privileged schools.ThisGive2Talent cricket initiative, which

started about three weeks ago, is currentlydrivenbyDistrictNorthCricket, with sever-al second-hand kits having already been

freelydonatedbyDistrictNorthyouth crick-eters. Besides the participation of severalnorthern suburbs schools in the drive, theEl Shaddai Christian School, Kat’s formerschool has also made a donation to the drivein the form of second-hand kits.Perfect Bounce have recently come on

The South African Open national tabletennis championship took place in Bel-har last week and more than 650 play-

ers from 14 regions took part.Mitchell’s Plain native Shane Overmeyer

contested the men’s final against GautengCentral’s Terence Mathole.Overmeyer, a seven-timeSAchampionbe-

fore this year’s event, was a man on a two-fold mission. He had a score to settle withMathole, who had beaten him in 2014’s tour-nament and he wanted to prove that he wasindeed the best that Western Province (WP)had produced in recent years and claim thenational title for an incredible eighth time.Overmeyer, who plays for Bishop Lavis,

had beaten the 2014 champion, Keagan Lin-geveldt en route to the final, while Matholesecured his place in the showdown afterovercomingKurt Lingeveldt inwhatwas de-scribed as the two best matches of the tour-nament.WP featured in all but one of the finals

which preceded themen’s final (missing outon participating in the women’s final) andwith Overmeyer beingWP’s head coach, thepressure stakes increased significantly.A packed Belhar sports centre would bear

witness to one of the most epic table tennisfinals to date, providing an electric atmos-phere as Mathole received phenomenal sup-port from the crowd. This spurred him onto win the first set. This served as a catalystforOvermeyer, who dictated thematch fromthere in a display of immense patience andcontrol to win his eighth SA Open title.Overmeyer said he was nervous in the

morning and during the first set of the final, but that his best game is played when fight-ing to win, having wonmanymatches whencoming back from a deficit. He put his suc-cess down to experience on a day where ittriumphed over youth.WP’s juniors also excelled. Lakeasha

Johnson won the u-15 and u-18 girls’ titleswhile Zakeer Moosa was crowned the u-18boys champion. Other stand-out performerswere Jesse-Leigh Nomdo (u-13 girls’ doublesand mixed champ), Cade Peters (u-15 boyssingle anddoubles champ),MusfiquhKalam(u-13 girls’ singles and doubles champ),Trudy Barros (u-18 girls’ doubles runner-upand u-18 mixed doubles runner-up), SimeenMookrey (u-18 girls’ singles runner-up, u-15doubles champ and u-15 mixed doubleschamp).

Mushfiqah Kalam from Bonteheuwel won the girls’ u13 final.
