AKuils River mother says she fears forthe safety of her child after he was at-tacked in front of the family’s house

recently. The boy (15) fortunately managed to es-

cape his attackers and ran inside, DelmaineFarmer, the mother, explains. The attack occurred in the quiet Paalk-

rans Street in Elim two weeks ago.“We moved here four months ago. We

moved from Delft where violence is com-mon and I hoped that thingswould be betterhere, but it does not seem that way,” Del-main says. Her son,Wade, was playing outside in the

street with the family’s six-month-old

American pit bull terrier puppy, Emma, when the attack occurred around 19:00 onWednesday 30 September.“Awhite Toyota Quantumminibus drove

past the house. It turned around and whenthey came back, they drove slowly beforestopping. Two men then jumped out of thevehicle. One was armed with a knife; theother had a gun,” says Delmain. Her son ran inside the yard closing the

gate behind him. Emma, however, was sto-len.“He called out to her but one of themgrab-

bed her by the collar.”One of the attackers also shouted to his

accomplice to catch Wade.“We suspect they wanted the key to the

house which Wade had with him at thetime,” Delmain says.

The men took Emma and sped off.“My sonwas shocked. He broke into tears

when I arrived home,” says Delmain, whorushed from a nearby mall. She adds: “He does not walk around that

much anymore.”A case of robbery was opened at the Kuils

River police station.Photos of the Emma has since been circu-

lated on Facebook and by some veterinarysurgeons.“Emma has a micro-chip. She also has a

name tag with my contact details aroundher neck,” says dog lover Delmain.Captain Isaac van Niekerk, Kuils River

police spokesperson, says no arrests havebeen made.V Anyone with details can contact the Kuils Riverpolice on 021 900 2800.

Cancer patients and their carers now havea haven where they can openly and safelyspeak about their suffering – according toexperts something many people struggle todo.A new cancer support group was

launched last week Thursday at the EersteRiver NGO Community Women Action(CWA) in partnership with Cansa WesternCape. The aim of the group is to allow patients

and their carer the opportunity to speakabout their pain and difficulties, says EsterWilson, a Cansa social worker and commu-nity mobiliser. The support group forms part of the orga-

nisation’s patient services.“This is basically offering support to the

patient.“We train volunteers as support group

leaderswho then assist patients on amonth-ly basis, creating a place where people cancome to talk.“My goal is not only to establish the sup-

port group, but for the group to be more in-volved in the community, thus visitingschools and churches,” Ester says.

This way more people will be encouragedto talk about the disease, their suffering andhow they cope with the situation, she says.“Themain focus is to have a narrative ap-

proach – part of the healing is telling your

story,” Ester says. The CWA is located next to the R102

(Strand Road) in Devon Park, Eerste River.V For more details on the support group, contactCWA on 021 904 1990.

broodnodig.

wiele wil behou.Só waarsku ’n plaaslike Kuilsrivier-

buurtwaglid nadat motors se wiele die afge-lope ruk weer by heelparty huise dwarsoorKuilsrivier begin verdwyn het.

Wieldiewe slaan gewoonlik laat snags ofvroeg soggens toe.

“Hier was altyd vier patrollie-voertuie vir elke sektor, nou is daar nettwee.

“My buurman se motor se wiele is ookdieselfde nag gesteel.

Motorists are urged to check therenewal dates for their vehi-cles and not wait for a notice.

According to a statement by theCity of Cape Town, the National De-partment of Transport’s (DOT) trans-fer of the Electronic National TrafficInformation System (eNaTIS) to theRoad Traffic management centre isaffecting motorists whose licencediscs have expired at the end of Sep-tember and are renewable byWednesday 21 October.

This transfer has resulted in motor-ists not receiving notices to renewtheir annual motor vehicle licences.

Furthermore, motorists whose li-cence discs will expire on Saturday 31October and are renewable by Satur-day 21 November will not be receiv-ing renewal notices.

“The City asks motorists to act pro-actively to ensure that the necessaryarrangements are made and to renewdiscs online. The City apologises forany inconvenience and urges motor-ists to check their disc renewal date.”

You can renew your licence onlineby visiting www.capetown.gov.zaand search for E-services and click onthe Motor Vehicle Licensing tab. Youcan also visit your nearest vehicle li-censing office.

As a rule, motorists receive a 21-day grace period in which to renewtheir licence discs from the end oftheir renewal period.

“We are doing everything in ourpower to solve the problem and comeup with mitigating measures. We askthat the DOT and the Road TrafficManagement Centre resolve thetransfer of the eNaTIS as soon as pos-sible and that this problem is sortedout before November, which is thebusiest month of the year for motorvehicle license renewals,” says Citymayoral committee member for fi-nance, Ian Neilson.

Award-winning local filmmaker DesmondDenton aims to showcase South African tal-ent to the world with the upcoming film Jer-ome.

Denton, who boasts a mantelpiece linedwith local and international film awards, re-cently signed on as director for this film, which earlier this year started off as an up-liftment project for the gang-ridden commu-nity of Scottsdene in Kraaifontein.

As part of Imagenheart production compa-ny, it is his vision to also take this featurewhich he describes as “an incredible storyof hope” to various international festivals.

“Jerome has the potential to inspire com-munities. My vision for this film truly stemsfrom my passion to uplift, entertain and cre-ate films that are of high quality internation-ally,” he said in a recent interview .

Denton aims to use the film as a tool ofchange and says they are working with so-cial workers and community leaders for asimilar approach to the film Lenteblom.”

This film, which deals with the virgin curemyth, was screened at thousands of farms inSouth Africa, and according to Denton hadbeen very successfully implemented withHIV/Aids strategies and discussions. Simi-

larly, Jerome, that plays off in the midst ofa troubled environment rife with gangster-ism and drugs, will be screened at highschools across especially the Western Cape.

The project will be completed in two stages– firstly a short film, then the feature.

“The two stories however are sequential– so it follows on each other. A very excitingangle to the Jerome project is that we are ele-vating the story with the elements of a musi-cal. Various gifted dancers and musiciansare already involved, and it resulted in theproject doing a stage show later this year inpreparation to the film,” he says.

Denton met the cast in Kraaifontein lastweek. “The purpose of the meeting was to in-clude them in the project. It is one thing tomerely use people to make a film; it is some-thing different when they are part of it, careabout it and truly believe in it. We are veryexcited to have award winning filmmakers, community leaders as well as an acclaimedand upcoming cast involved. It is the perfectmix for a good film with impact,” he says.

“It was very exciting hearing their verypersonal stories – stories of pain and hope.It was incredible to see how real the storyof Jerome was by hearing these accounts ofpeople whose lives have been affected and insome cases destroyed by elements such astik and gangsterism, and exploring what can

we do with this film to offer healthy alterna-tive options for the youth. The film is a greatopportunity for this.”

Filming is set to start early next year.“We furthermore are creating a book that

includes the personal stories, poems andscript of Jerome as part of the funding.”

In recent years Imagenheart was involvedwith big feature films such as Mooirivierwith Cobus van den Berg, and actors suchas Mos Def (Italian Job) and various celebri-ties including chef Jamie Oliver, DesmondTutu and PJ Powers.

The Imagenheart team has also worked oninternational films and series such asResident Evil and Black Sails.

“But what excites me most is seeing peopleon international level respond to our films. We have won various international awardswith the film Anderkant die stilte, which in-cluded best directed, best written, best ac-tors and best produced,” he says.

“The aim of this project is definitely tofirst create an engaging heartfelt entertain-ing film, which – through the process – devel-ops talent.”V Denton will be doing further castings for the theatre production as well as film and invites dancers, actors, creatives and marketing students to get intouch with the production team on the Facebookpage JEROME

haaraf kon maak.

SOCCER: CT TYGERBERG TURNED GAME ON ITS HEAD

JOSEPH PILLAY

Legendary soccer player Daniel “Dot”Borman, a phenomenal professionalplayer in his heyday, may have relived

some of his glory days this past weekendwhen he led his charges, the board side ofCape Town Tygerberg, to clinch the seniordivision of the interprovincial Goodwilltournament.

A remarkable fight by CT Tygerberg – whotrailed 1-0 at the break – turned the secondhalf on its head to beat a gutsy and hyped-upEast London Central side 3-1.

Spare a thought for Charles Petersen, theEast London Central coach who agreed thathis boys ran out of stream in the secondstance with tired legs in a three-day tourna-ment that was a bit taxing on the players.

Nonetheless, Aviwe Klaas, who was alsochosen as the player of the tournament, opened the scoring for the visitors from EastLondon. They held onto their 1-0 lead at theinterval.

After the changeover a much-focused andresurgent CT Tygerberg side started toknock the ball around and began to play withpurpose, often putting severe pressure ontheir opponents.

It also must be said that CT Tygerberggoalkeeper Shirau Wilks (goalkeeper of thetournament) kept his side in the game.

Meanwhile, Fernal Abrahams equalisedmatters for Tygerberg early in the secondhalf after good assist play through WagietDamont. The team later surged 2-1 aheadthrough an Armien Campbell goal.

In the later stages of the game Tygerberg’sCharles van der Vent was fouled in the pen-alty area and Abrahams sealed the matchand his second goal from the spot kick (3-1).

In the semi-final berth the action was justas captivating if not as exciting – especiallythe Eastern Cape derby in which East Lon-don Central shaded Northern Areas fromPort Elizabeth 2-1, thanks to second-half

goals by Sheldon Stevens and Alistair Vis-age.

Sergio Vardy gave Northern Areas thelead midway through the first half.

In the other semi-final CT Tygerberg, whoearlier in the round robin format lost 2-0 toCape district, set the cat among the pigeons, this time thanks to a solid strike by IekeraanPeterson. CT Tygerberg won 1-0.

The top goalscorer prize went to EnricoPlaatjies of Northern Areas. He banged insix goals while Marlon Hansby of NorthernSuburbs won the referee of the tournamentaward.

Tournament coordinator Iqbal Kaskersaid the tournament once again broughtplenty new and refreshing ideas to adminis-trators as well as to soccer players forgingrelationships on and off the field.

“This concept of interacting with local soc-cer associations may not be like that of pastinterprovincial soccer, but through this ini-tiative at local level we seek further to en-hance the overall development of promotingamateur football development in the region– the Goodwill tournament is all about show-casing the wealth of talent from across thethe country,” said Kasker.

Nathan Less, president of the host CapeDistrict, said he was pleased with the turn-out and that the three-day Goodwill tourna-ment brought spectators from far and wide.He hopes in the broader sense the initiativewill inspire other, more fun-loving soccerfans and local associations to embrace it andparticipate.

Results:U.11 Cup Final: Northern Areas 4, CT Tyg-erberg 2 (pen, 0-0).U.13 Cup Final: Northern Areas 2, North-ern Suburbs 0.U.15 Cup Final: CT Tygerberg 5, NorthernSuburbs 4 (pen, 2-2).U.17 Cup Final: Northern Areas 1, North-ern Suburbs 0.

The annual Cape inter-provincial figureskating championship will take place atthe ice rink at GrandWest from Friday toSunday.

This promises to be a bumper eventwith entries streaming in from all skatingregions. Approximately 120 skaters areexpected.

The competition comprises solo skat-ing where the skater performs requiredelements of their own – including jumpsand spins – to music, as well as pair skat-ing and synchronized skating where ateam of 12 to 16 skaters perform in unisonto music with a variety of lifts, circles, lines and wheels with some intricate foot-work.

Judges from all over South Africa willbe officiating at this event, and there isan international selection meeting sched-

uled straight after where the skaters willbe assessed for international participa-tion and the world championship.

The skaters are scored on a computer-ised system with instant playback facili-ties, and the judges make use of this togive the skater the best result when as-sessing their performance.

Western Province is the largest skatingprovince and plan to enter 50 solo skatersas well as five synchronized skatingteams in an attempt to retain the interprovincial title held for the past 16 years.

Skaters entering this event range fromthe very young (under 10 years) to seniormen and women where the average ageis 22 years, as well as adult sections withcompetitors over 25.V Any further information can be obtained fromDawn van der Riet on 083 303 4907.
