Volgens haar is daar ’n konstante stank

BuitebandTydens ’n besoek verlede Donderdag was

tans opgeruim.

KontrakteursDie gedeelte langs Spandau is laas in Sep-

Hy sê daar is verskeie stortingsterreine

woonlik R1 600. Die minste wat ons al be-taal het, was R914 in 2014.“Dis die eerste keer dat ons rekening so

hoog is,” sê Lackay.

AmptenareLackay moes on-

ander gevalle aangemeld is.Ernest Sonnenberg, burgemeestersko-

miteelid van nutsdienste, sê die Stad het

onlangs ’n algemene toename in navraeoor rekeninge ervaar.

LekkasieNog ’n verduideliking is ’n moontlike

Following a recent complaint by a Pen-hill Estate resident regarding air andnoise pollution in the area allegedly

caused by cement and concrete giantLafarge SA, the company responded thisweek claiming several steps are being takento help minimise pollution.TygerBurger reported on the matter last

week (“Penhill dust not settled”, TygerBur-ger, 9 March).

In the article ward councillor Bert vanDalen explained that several attempts hadbeen made to have the quarry relocated, butresidents were still battling to get this done.

This week another resident complainedabout the dust and noise, saying she fearsfor her family’s health. As a result of thecontinuous dust and noise problem, the res-ident and her spouse have decided to selltheir home.

This week Unathi Batyashe-Fillis,spokesperson for Lafarge SA, told Tyger-Burger that the company was doing its ut-most to prevent dust from blowing towardsthe quiet neighbourhood.

“Lafarge SA does everything in its powerto control, minimise and reduce the dustpollution towards communities in whichwe operate,” she said.

Among the measures implemented tohelp lessen dust pollution, the company en-closed all crushing activities – this way con-taining dust generated by the machines.

Other implementations include the in-stallation of water sprayers, the use of dustsuppression agents on unpaved roads, wa-tering unpaved roads continuously and theconstruction of a berm vegetated with largetrees between the quarry and the residen-tial area.

“We also submit a dust management planto the City of Cape Town regularly to ensurewe are complying with the legislation,” Bat-yashe-Fillis explained.

She said Lafarge SA has taken into con-sideration that the country has over thepast few months been experiencing excep-tionally hot, windy and dry weather condi-tions which have resulted in abnormal dustbeing generated this year. “We are howevercontinually seeking to improve our dustcontrol measures,” she added.

Batyashe-Fillis also mentioned that thecompany has dust monitors strategicallypositioned within the quarry’s perimeters.

In a previous interview with residents, some claimed that themachines at the quar-ry work right through the night. Batyashe-Fillis disputes this.

“Lafarge operates until 20:00 and does notwork throughout the night. Howeverwe areaware that Much Asphalt and Inca Bricksoperating within our premises have longerworking hours,” she explained.

Much Asphalt and Inca Bricks have alsobeen identified as some of the contributorsto the dust and noise pollution.

Asked about the extent to which they con-tribute, Batyashe-Fillis responded: “Whilstwe do not speak on behalf of our stakehold-ers, we are aware of complaints by commu-nity members levelled at Much Asphalt andInca Bricks. Given our commitment to-wards responsible operations at all oursites, we have engaged our tenants and arecurrently revising our contracts to be inline with our sustainability objectives.”

She said Lafarge will give feedback to thecommunity with regards to the outcomes ofthese discussions.

Residents and Lafarge meet every twomonths to discuss all issues between theparties.

Traffic problems relieved soonRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

For years now motorists in Kuils River,Brackenfell and Kraaifontein havebeen moaning and groaning about bad

traffic congestion – something that couldsoon be a thing of the past. All of this is thanks toadevelopmentalong

the R300 freeway where the new R300/Bot-telary interchange is being built. The construction is set to last until mid

2017.A sod turning ceremony was held at the

site a week ago marking the start of the con-struction process.

The event was attended by several role-players, including officials from the City ofCape Town, the Provincial Government oftheWestern Cape and the South African Na-tional Roads Agency (Sanral).

The construction will provide quicker ac-cess for motorists from Bottelary Roadmov-ing onto the R300 to connect to, and from theN1 via two new lanes on either side of thenew interchange, the City said in a state-ment.

The development, worth R60 million, isone of many set to be undertaken in the cityover the next five years.

One of those at the sod turning event onThursday morning was Cape Town mayorPatricia de Lille.

“As a means to respond to the influx intoCape Town, the municipality decided to in-vest a total of R750 million which will bespent over the next five years to tackle con-gestion issues across the city,” De Lille, wearing a hardhat and reflector jacket, toldTygerBurger at the construction site lastweek.

The R750 million for roads and upgradesform part of the City’s congestion relief pro-gramme. Kuils River is one of the areas inthe city prioritised for this programme. Thetraffic congestion here, De Lille says, is the

worst in the city. The City of Cape Town contributed 52%

(R31 million) towards the project, and theProvincial Government of the WesternCape’s Department of Transport and PublicWorks 48% (R29 million). A portion of themoney was also donated by the private sec-tor, De Lille added – three local private com-panies donated R5 million each.“I am looking forward to have more such

partnerships,” she said.Donald Grant, the Western Cape Minister

of Transport, shared De Lille’s sentiments.“For us in transport it’s really about linka-ges and the partnership that has been facili-tated with the major partner being the Cityof Cape Town, ourselves, Sanral and the pri-

vate sector,” Grant said.He said in order to achieve goals such as

the current development, a partnership isimportant and often the only way of answer-ing the needs of the people.“Cape Town is one of the fastest growing

cities.“We need to pool our resources in terms

of meeting the demand from the variouscommunities,” Grant said.Other congestion alleviation projects in

Kuils River and surrounding areas includethe recent widening of Amandel Road at acost of R18m, the widening of Van RiebeeckRoad at a cost of R8.5m and Saxdowne Roadwhich is under construction at a cost ofR32.5m.

A man who admitted to the murder ofLee Adams, a teen whose decapitatedbody was found in the derelict FloridaPrimary, was found guilty of murderand beheading the victim.According to News24, Aljar Swartz

was found guilty by Western CapeHigh Court Judge Elize Steyn onMon-day 14 March.Steyn ruled that themurder commit-

ted in 2013 was premeditated.Steyn also found him guilty of three

counts of intentionally inciting, per-suading and encouraging men to lurea victim to Ravensmead. According tothe report Swartz seemed unmoved bythe judgment.“He calmly looked around the court

and was led down to the police cellsduring an adjournment,” the news ser-vice reported.

Last month, Swartz admitted to kill-ing 15-year-old Adams so he could sellAdams’s body parts to a sangoma. He admitted to strangling the teen-

ager at Florida Primary School in Rav-ensmead on 17 October 2013. Swartzthen stabbed him numerous times un-til he died.“Thereafter I decapitated him,” he

stated in the document handed to thecourt.“Although I consumed alcohol and

dagga during the day of October 17,2013, I could still appreciate thewrong-fulness of my conduct. I was a followerof Satan at the time,” Swartz stated.A security guard found the boy’s

body at the school. The teen’s head was later found in

a shallow grave in the yard of hishouse.

Asoccer festival at the Strandfonteinsports complex starts on Saturday. The “By theSea” tournamenthosted

by Strandfontein AFC is expected to bringdroves of spectators to witness the 13th an-nual showpiece of u.13 soccer players com-peting for cup glory. The event has been able to attract clubs

from all over for a number of years to feaston and develop players by participating inthe u.13 event. At the same time a carnival atmosphere

entices clubs and spectators alike to share

in the thrills and spills of the soccer talentthe youth event brings. The launch for this year’s tournamentwas

held at the Strandfontein Civic Centre lastWednesday. The 32 teams participating were divided

into eight groups of four teams each. With major sponsors such as Coolag,

Strandfontein AFC has been able to not onlyhost the annual tournament, but improve onthe quality on offer for the young soccerplayers and their administrators. And with other sponsors like Umbro and

Jive, the organisers believe this year’s tour-nament will be the best and most exciting

one staged throughout its history.Previous winners have been academies

like Fish Hoek (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2014)and Old Mutual last year. The teams will be competing for R2 000 in

the winners’ section. The championship team will also receive

a floating trophy, a keepsake trophy and 20individual medals. The runner-up team will receive R750 and

a trophy. The losing semi-finalists will bothpocket R400 in prize money. In the plate section the crownwinnerswill

receive R500 and keepsake trophy while thelosing finalist will pocket R400.

The shield section champions will beawarded R350 and a keepsake trophy, withthe runners-up smiling to the bank withR300.Amongst the individual awards up for

grabs, the player of the tournament will winR250 and receive a medal and trophy.Likewise the goalkeeper, top goal scorer,

manager of the tournament as well as teamof the fair play award will also win R250, amedal and trophy. The tournament kicks off on Saturday at

09:00 and ends at 18:00 each day, except forthe Sunday at about 16:00 with the prize giv-ing.

TOURNAMENT: CLUBS RALLY FOR TOP SPOT

Soccer ‘by the sea’

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

Having cleared the gunge from their ex-hausts after the opening meeting of theWingfield Motors sponsored Power Seriesat Killarney last month, competitors arenow preparing to shoot the lights out dur-ing the second round on Saturday.Adding to the excitement will be the ap-

pearance of two top British drivers in theV8 Masters events. Stephen Young, who isbased in London, has become a regular inthese parts and it came as no real surprisewhen he won one of the races during thefirst round. However Pat Gormley has notbeen to the Cape before andmay need timeto get used to the track. One certainty is that neither of them can

expect any mercy from local hotshots likechampion Richard Schreuder, Craig Jar-vis, Franco Donadio and Charles Arton. Then, although it didn’t win, Dave Row-

ley’s historic VW Beetle captured thehearts of the spectators in the Fine Carevents, a category now sponsored by KentHomes. Giving as good as he got, Rowleyeventually settled for secondnot far behindGeoffBihl’s extremelyquickPorsche 944 S.Two others who endeared themselves to

the crowd that day, were 15-year-old For-mula Mygale driver Joshua Dolinschek

and Dee–Jay Booysen in his home builtFerrari (sort of) lookalike in the singleseater Formula Libre category. But whileDolinschek, who is the youngest main cir-cuit driver in the Western Cape, snatchedan overall victory, Booysen was only ableto complete one race and finished welldown on the points tally. It is going to be interesting to see him in

action during a (hopefully) trouble freeround. Nick Adcock was one of the mostprominent drivers who missed the firstround of the Makita Formula Supercarevents in order to compete in the Africa6-hour endurance race at Phakisa in theFree State. His stay-away was certainly justified

whenhe (andhis co-drivers)went on towinthe gruelling event in fine style.Moving on to the Crossley and Webb

Sports & GT events, if Adcock is at thewheel of the French Ligier that he drovein the 6-Hour, his battle with former title-holder Francis Carruthers (Juno SS3) andDawie Joubert in his Lotus Exige, could beanother one of the meeting’s highlights. With 18 races on the programme and a

plethora of new kiddie and family attrac-tions at Killarney, there should be some-thing for everybody at the complex on Sat-urday.

UK drivers seen in action in Power Series

The appearance of two top British drivers in the V8 Masters category at Killarney on Saturdayis certain to make the racing even more exciting. PHOTO: DAVE COLINS
