Sy en haar man, past.

Two suspects’ plans for an armed robberywent horribly wrong when they wereboth caught by Mfuleni police. The suspects, aged 19 and 23, pointed a

firearm at occupants of a delivery truck, who were busy delivering chips to spazashops in the Mfuleni area.Capt Nomathemba Muavha, communi-

cations officer of the Mfuleni police saysthe incident happened last week Monday12 November after 13:00. Muavha says thetwo men approached the victims and de-manded money. “They took their cellularphones and also tried to remove the cashout of a drop safe at the back of the truck,by firing a shot to the safe, but were un-successful to open it,” said Muavha in apress release. The robbers instructed the male pas-

senger of the delivery truck to get in the

back of the truck, with one of the robbers, while the female driver had to drive thetruck. This while the second suspect fled from

the scene on foot.Luckily the passenger in the back of the

delivery truck managed to escape. “Onhis way to the police station, he againspotted the truck and a police vehicle. Hestopped the police vehicle and informedthem of the incident.Police officials managed to stop the

truck on Hindle Road, Blue Downs. Oneof the suspects still in the truck tried toescape, but was caught by the police.“Further investigation led the mem-

bers to a house in Mfuleni where they ar-rested the second suspect,” Muavha said. Both suspects appeared in the Blue

Downs Magistrate’s Court last week.

The Desmond Tutu TB Centre at the Stel-lenboschUniversity campusat theTyger-berg Hospital in Parow, haswon the 2012Stop TB Partnership Kochon Prize for itsgroundbreaking research on childhoodTB.

The centre was also honoured for pioneer-ing community-based approaches to TB andHIV care. The prize was presented at the Stop TB

Symposium, an annual event at the WorldConference of the International UnionAgainst Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, inKuala Lumpur last Tuesday.Patron of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre,

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, said hewas hon-

oured that the centre had been awarded thecoveted international prize.“This generous award will allow us to con-

tinue our work saving the lives of childrenill with TB and seeking solutions we believecan culminate in a world free of TB,” Tutusaid, adding that it was wonderful to see thatchildhood TB was starting to get the atten-tion it deserved. The US$ 65 000 Kochon Prize (about

R570 000) has been awarded annually for thepast six years for a highly significant contri-bution to combatingTB, a disease that is cur-able, but still causes the deaths of 200 chil-dren every day. It’s the first time that the award has been

given exclusively for the fight against child-

hood TB. Tuberculosis is rife in South Afri-ca, with 15 % of all TB cases occurring inchildren.Anneke Hesseling, the director of the Des-

mond Tutu TB Centre’s paediatric pro-gramme said; “The Kochon Prize will helpto raise the global profile of childhood TB.Now is the time to take hold of this opportu-nity to raise awareness of childhood TB. Weneed ongoing political commitment fromgovernments, the World Health Organisa-tion, research institutes and industry tokeepchildhood TB on the agenda.”The TB Centre has a series of outreach

projects in theWestern Cape, working close-ly with communities and the Department ofHealth in integrating research and services.

Residents are being advised not to give mon-ey to anyoneposingasCity ofCapeTownper-sonnel, who ask for “Christmas boxes” or“donations” during the festive season. The City of Cape Town has a strict policy

that forbids solid waste collection personnelor any other service personnel from askingresidents for “donations”, but according toShehaam Sims, the city’s mayoral commit-tee member for utility services, incidentshave occurred where people, posing as citystaff, have aggressively asked homeownersfor money.“The city will not tolerate such behaviour

from our own staff and have accordingly in-structed all staff that soliciting for ‘Christ-mas boxes’ and donations is discouraged,”Sims said.Anyone aware of outsiders posing as city

officials, should report the matter to the po-lice. Call 0860 103 089 in office hours.

Theheadboy ofAberdarePrima-ry No. 2 in Delft is heading off toan academic adventure of a life-time next year.

While the schoolmay just be a col-lection of prefabricated buildingsin the dust of Delft, the teachershave dedicated themselves to pro-viding learners there with knowl-edge that ensures them achievingtheir full potential.Head boy at the school, Mosuli

Sitele (13), is proof of this potentialwhen he starts his high-schoolingat Camps Bay High next year, andthe world is his oyster when itcomes to his studies after matric.Sitele is a recipient of one of the

scholarships available through theStudents for a Better Future whichis part of the Andreas and SusanStruengmann Foundation initia-tive.Started in 2007 it enables academ-

ically gifted, financially needylearners to attend some of the besthigh schools in the area. The aim ofthe programme is to allow thesescholars to fully develop their tal-ents and make a valuable contribu-tion to their country, communitiesand families.Owen Williams, the Grade 7

teacher explained that while he al-ways knew that Mosuli was a giftedlearner, this opportunity cameabout through the accident of a“wrong” number.“I was in the office and answered

a call which was for some otherschool, but I asked what it wasabout,” he said.“When I heard about these schol-

arships I knew that as a school wehad to become involved, and man-aged to get all the details about theproject.“Ten of our learners were initial-

ly forwarded to the organisationand we are overjoyed that afterstrenuous testing Mosuli is gettingthis opportunity.“I know that this youngman is go-

ing to make us proud because as alearner at this school he inspires us

with what he has achieved despitedisadvantaged circumstances. Heis someone who inspires his fellowlearners and is a good leader.”Mosuli is still humbled by achiev-

ing this scholarship but knows thatit is the chance of a lifetime and heis ready to accept the challenge.“I am very excited about it all,”

he says.“But, I feel that am ready to face

the challenges ahead for me be-cause here atAberdare the teachershave given us such a good educa-tion to make us ready to reach ourdreams.“I have already been to some of

the orientation activities at theschool and know that there are somany resources and teachers thatwill be available to me to help mewith my education.“Whatever is in store for me I

know that I have a family here atmy primary school that always be-lieved in me, and one day I will re-pay for their support.”Asked about what he wants to be,

he shyly admits that he was think-ing of going into engineering or In-formation Technology, but teacherWilliams has the last word.“Mosuli must become our presi-

dent,” he says with confidence.“He will show all those politi-

cians what being a “real” leader isall about in the right way.”

. Andreas Struengmann and hisSouth African-born wife Sue live inSouthern Germany, 50 km outsideMunich, although they spend partof each year in Cape Town, SouthAfricaThe story of this foundation has

its roots in the Eastern Cape whenAndreas, originally came to South

Africa as amedical intern, after stu-dying in Freiburg and Munich. Atthat time, he and Sue worked toge-ther in Tsolo, in the Eastern Cape, where they were struck by the lackof resources in both the hospitaland the school where Sue was wor-king.“There wasn’t enough medicine

and there weren’t even pens andpencils available to learners. Wemade a promise to each other thatif we were ever successful enough,we would do our part to help youngpeople in this country get a goodeducation,” remembers Sue.Andreas went on to work as a GP

in South Africa and then, in 1978,entered the family pharmaceuticalbusiness in Germany. He and histwin brother sold the business in1986 and founded the pharmaceuti-cal company Hexal AG.

Are you ready to rock and roll?

A music educator in Belhar is starting aunique pilot project in the area of music les-sons with a difference.

Willie Molifie runs a music school in thearea and is now looking at encouraging morechildren and youth in the area to start learn-ing music to get their creative juices flowing.

“All children and youth love music, butmost music education centres around theclassics,” he says.

“Now I am giving youngsters the opportu-nity to start on that road to stardom with les-sons that features the music of modern rockand pop composers.

“The added bonus is that they will be ableto have access to the education and tutoringwith no monthly fees.

“Parents can now register their childrenfor the course, but pay only for the music the-ory study manual on the day of registration.

“Their annual music training fees comesfrom the sale of our unique music school uni-versal diary, which is coupled with a 48 pagefamily tree section incorporated in the uni-versal diary.”

Molifie added that the serious side of this

project is that the course is also graded andexamined by the prestigious Trinity Collegeof London.

“Participants can go right up to Grade 8,which means it can also help those who wantto study music further,” he said.

“The great innovation is that many ofthem will know the music that they will belearning because it includes music by artistslike David Bowie, ABBA, Joni Mitchell, Ra-diohead, Kings of Leon, Green Day, Muse,Rihanna, Carli Simon and Rolling Stones.”

Molifie also feels that learning music canhelp children improve their other learningskills at school as well.

“It has been proven that children who domusic improve in all other aspects of theireducation,” he says.

“The discipline that you have to apply toplay your instrument well extends to howyou perceive all other learning, and it thenapplies to all you do in life.

“You also learn other valuable life skillswhen you start playing your music in agroup, and it’s a great way to make friends.”

Registration for the course will be takingplace at Symphone Primaryon Saturday 1December from 8:30 to 12:00. Further infor-mation from 082 870 8355, or email [email protected].

“Nes my eie manhet my skoonseun my dogter baiesleg behandel,” sê sy.

Haar man hethaar verbied om haar familie tesien en finansiële geweld was deelvan hul huwelik.

“My man was verslaaf aan porno-

grafie.

skend,” sê sy.Sy skryf meeste probleme in hu-

Stres en’n gejaagde lewe dra daartoe by.”

THOMAS CAROLUS

Engen Santos have the depth and quality tocollect all three points when they face Wit-bank Spurs in a National First Divisionleague match at the Puma Rugby Stadiumon Sunday afternoon.“We have a team capable of bringing three

points to Cape Town,” says captain, TyrenArendse.“There is the depth andwe have the talent

required to do well on Sunday. All we needis enough hunger from the players’ side.“An away game is a different story from

other matches because there’s a lot at stakeand total focus is required from everyone, with no room for mistakes.“Against a team like Witbank Spurs, you

have to be sharp andwork as a teambecausetheyaredangerouson set pieces andcounterattacks. They use their wings quite well and have

a mixture of youth talent and experiencedplayers, which is what makes them tick,”Arendse adds. The club is also very happy with PA Dem-

bo Touray, the Santos goalkeeper who hasnot put a foot wrong all season.“Touray is the most courageous keeper

around and loves diving for balls wherethere is a riskof aboot in themouth,” contin-ued Arendse.“He may be slightly mad with the risks

that he takes, but every club would love tohave such a brave lad in goal.

“Sometimes his enthusiasm gets the bet-ter of him and he must think about when togo for balls and when to let his defence tidyup.”Another key player is NasiefMorris, who,

although he prefers playing at centre-back,has more often appeared at full-back andplayed in the middle of defence for Santosand has never let his country down whencalled upon. His pace makes him ideal for a more ad-

vanced wing-back role and his crossing alsosuits that position.A clean tackler, he is not the type to let

you down in a big game.Although plagued by well documented in-

jury problems, Tawonga Chimodzi remainsone of the most creative midfielders at San-tos.Chimodzi can play in the middle of the

park or out wide. From the middle he cansplit opendefenceswith tellingpasses, whileon the flanks his athleticism takes him intoareas where he can provide quality crosses. He tends to drift in and out of games,

doesn’t get involved in any defensive workand a question marks hang over his ambi-tion.His adaptability means he can play up,

front, just off the main striker or drop backinto midfield.Vuyisile Wana is also one to watch on the

field, he causes major problems for any de-fence, because of his flashy skills and hispacey runs.

Santos have what ittakes to collect points
