Laerskoolleerders in Wesbank is van-deesweek op ’n ietwat harde manierdeur voormalige gevangenes daaraan

Die jeug is deurgaans aange-moedig om die regte besluite te neem en niedieselfde pad as die drie voormalige bendele-de te volg nie.Die drie het in boeie om die arms en bene,

tel dat bendes sy lewensdroomvernietig het.“Niemand kan ons drome verwesenlik be-

halwe onsself nie. Ek wou as kind ’n ver-keersbeampteword,maar het toe by die ben-de aangesluit.“Wanneer jy by Pollsmoor-gevangenis in-

Despite hardships, an aspiring topyoung chef now dreams of somedayopening his own restaurant.

Siphelele Mfini (24), originally from thesmall Karoo town of Willowvale in the East-ern Cape, has had many setbacks, includingthe death of his 10-month-old baby, and be-ing unemployed.Despite these challenges, the young chef

is now planning to further his studies andobtain a diploma, and aims to one dayachieve his life dream of becoming a headchef.After completing his matric in 2010, Siph-

elele travelled to Cape Town seeking em-ployment.

Learning to cook“I was unemployed for two years when a

lady at a soup kitchen in Mfuleni informedme about the training offered to drivers atthe Community Women Action (CWA).

“I came toCWA formydriver’s licence butfound out about the chef’s training coursethat they offer. I told myself I would like tolearn to cook.”Siphelele participated in the basic chef’s

course at CWA for seven months.“After that I was employed at Saverite, a

local supermarket in Mfuleni, where Iworked in the bakery.” He worked there asa baker for nine months.“Afterwards Iworkedat theCTICC for two

weeks before moving to Stanford,” the shychef explained.In Stanford, where he has been working

at a taste kitchen since 16 September lastyear, he fully enjoys his career.“I went from being a vegetable chef to be-

coming a pastry chef. I love working withdough. I like to play with food,” he says witha smile.Asked about his plans for the future, he

says: “I want to go further. I want to get mydiploma and become a head chef and some-day open my own restaurant.”He hopes to set up his establishment in

Cape Town, as well as Willowvale where hismother and wife still lives.

Committed“I enjoy what I am doing. I really, really

enjoy it,” he said.Ashley Mouton, Siphelele’s trainer at

CWA, described him as being very commit-ted. So far Ashley has trained over 100 teen-agers, mostly from previously disadvan-taged areas.“I saw he (Siphelele) is committed, always

punctual and willing to learn,” Ashley said.He said he is very excited about his young

student’s prospects.“He will be going to Germany soon with

the owner of the restaurant where heworks,to work as a chef during the holiday seasonthere. I am very proud of him.”Asked about the support he got fromCWA,

Siphelele replied: “I want to come backsomeday and say thank you, thank you,thank you, because without them I wouldnot have been here. I did not have a future,but now I do.”

The memory of the Buttskop level crossingcrash victims will soon be immortalisedwhen a memorial site for the ten childrenis erected at the Welmoed Cemetery.

The issue regarding the memorial wasdiscussed at a recent subcouncil meetingwhich was held last Friday.

Elaine Noble, administrative officer atSubcouncil 21, informed the council of thesite at Welmoed which was made available,and of the decision by city’s parks to main-tain the memorial.

She said a site in the Welmoed Cemetery

extension had been identified in terms ofthe masterplan, but said that estimates re-garding the memorial have not yet been fi-nalised.

“City parks has committed to maintain-ing the memorial site within the context ofthe cemetery, however, no funds are availa-ble from city parks for the construction ofthe said memorial,” Noble said.

A suggestion for funds to be made availa-ble from the council’s Ward AllocationFunds was put forward in a report.

This a suggestion has received supportfrom a majority within the council. Earlierthis year it was proposed that a wall of re-membrance be erected at the crash site.

However, the decision was not supportedby the department of roads and transport,who stated that a future development by Es-kom was being planned for the site.

Ten children died in August 2010 when atrain slammed into the minibus-taxi inwhich they were being transported toschool.

The crash spurred safety reforms in theprovince.

The children who died are Reece Smith(7), Michaela de Koker (11), Nolan February(13), Jody Phillips (13), Cody Erasmus (15),Nadine Marthinisen (16), Jean-Pierre Wille-man (13), Jason Pedro (14), Jade Adams (10),and Lisle Augis (11).

The police in Kleinvlei are investigatingthe murder of 28 year old man who wasshot six times in Melton Rose a week ago.

The incident happened last Wednesday20 August at about 13:00 in Muller Street,police spokesperson Warrant Officer An-nacletta Mothoalo said.

She said the men were inside the housein the street when two unknown men at-tacked and opened fire on them. Thehouse, she said, belongs to an allegedgang member.

“They heard someone open the frontgate and then the door.

“The attackers then went inside theWendy-house where the four guys weresitting and started shooting. Out of thefour men, only one was shot and fatallywounded,” Mothoalo added.

Three of the men, according to her,managed to hide.

A total of six rounds were shot.“The wounded person died immediate-

ly.”The deceased, Joseph Allen Houtsa-

men, is originally from Delft, the policesaid.

“We are looking for anyone who cangive us information about the suspects.

“This was an intentional shooting. Wesuspect it is gang related,” she said.

Later that day Kleinvlei police attend-ed another shooting incident, this time inMalibu Village.

The shooting incident occurred at15:00, Mothoalo said.

“Unknown men jumped over a gate ata house in the area and shot several timesthrough the kitchen window.

“Fortunately no one was injured,” shesaid. The incident is also gang related.

Two men died this week when the shackthey were staying in caught alight andburnt down. Wilfred Solomons-Johannes,spokesperson for the City’s Disaster RiskManagement, said the two adult maleswere burnt beyond recognition.

The incident occurred on Sunday atabout 05:00 at a house located in MinisterStreet in the Bardale Informal Settlementnear Blue Downs. Five emergency vehicleswere dispatched to the scene from Mfuleni,Lansdowne Road in Khayelitsha and theMilnerton fire stations.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the firefight-ers established that neighbours attemptedto extinguish the fire, however, the shackwas engulfed in flames,” said Solomons-Jo-hannes.

“The emergency crews brought the fireunder control and established that twoadult males were trapped and burnt be-yond recognition,” he said.

It is suspected that the fire was causedby an open flame that had not been extin-guished.

The Mfuleni police have opened an in-quest docket to investigate the incident.

Residents in the Bardale Informal Settle-ment near Mfuleni have taken roadsafety into their own hands following

the death of a four-year-old girl recently.The residents used rubble to construct a

speed bump in the middle Tourmaline Road,and dug a shallow trench further along thesame road.

As a result, motorists are forced to slowright down or drive over the sidewalk. Some,however, prefer turning around.

One of the residentsTygerBurger spoke tothis week said the trench across the roadwas dug several days after the death of afour-year-old child about a month ago.

The resident, who did want to be named,said the child, whose name she did not know,died after being hit by a car. She said therehad been several such incidents over the lastfew months.

“Taxi’s, buses, trucks and cars, they allspeed down this road and that is why thecommunity did what they did,” the womensaid.

“The road is not safe,” another resident,who also want to remain anonymous, said.

The damage to the road and the plight ofthe community was also the topic of discus-sion at a subcouncil meeting on Friday 22

August.At the meeting, ward 108 councillor

Themba Honono, whose ward includes theBardale informal settlement, informed fel-low councillors about the application he hadmade for traffic calming measures, and therejection of this application due to existingtraffic circles on Tourmaline Road.

There are two traffic circles on the road.Honono said the application should be re-

considered.“The circles are located far apart,” Hono-

no said.Dennis de Villiers, a manager at the de-

partment of roads and transport, advisedHonono that he would follow the matter upwith his colleagues at the traffic and engi-neering departments.

“I will request that they re-assess the mat-ter and have a look at the position of the cir-cles and possibility of speed-bumps in-be-tween,” said de Villiers.

He indicated that a high school is locatedalong the road.

“I am under pressure from the communitydue to the action that has been taken so far.They have gone to the extent of digging ahole in the road for traffic to calm down,”said Honono.

Van Dalen met with Blackheath-residentson Monday night and he was hoping to sup-

ply them with answers regarding the matter.De Villiers told Van Dalen that the road

is a high traffic road and said that they mighthave to look at the possibility of sidewalks.

“That section of the road, however, is notin a good condition,” de Villiers said.

Residents of the Bardale Informal Settle-ment nearMfuleni were given an insight in-to criminal activities at a community Imbizoheld in the area last week.Apart from the feedback on crime success-

es and criminal activity, residents were alsoafforded the opportunity to voice their con-cerns.Among the concerns highlighted at the

meeting in the community hall last Tuesdaynight were the continuous fighting amongstboys in the area, corruption, drug housesand theft of property which is often sold tolocal scrap-yards.Some residents also complained about

robbery suspects that are arrested but re-leased days later. They also expressed theirunhappiness about the alleged lack of policevisibility and requested more police patrols.Senior management at the Mfuleni police

station and the local community crime forumresponded to their concerns.Speaking on behalf of the police, acting sta-

tion commander Colonel Fred Jacobs encour-aged residents to report corruption.“Everybodywhohas a complaint regarding

corruption should report it to the police.These cases canalsobe reported to theprovin-cial inspectorate, or even the provincial de-partment of community safety,” Jacobs said.He said corruption is something the police

regard very seriously.“On the topic of drug houses – often it is dif-

ficult for us to police this because the hid-ing spots for drugs at these houses oftenchange. We have had operations where wewould send in an officer to buy drugs. Af-terwards we will go in and arrest the per-son, but when we search the premises fordrugs we end up finding nothing.Responding to the issue regarding illegal

scrapyards and stolen property, Jacobssaid: “We can arrest people but we have 48hours to investigate the matter and thenhave to compile a docket that goes to court.“At court the decision is often taken to

release suspects on bail. This often comeswith conditions and one of those are thatthe suspect needs to report to the police sta-tion.“If those suspects harass the complain-

ant he or she can be re-arrested.”Jacobs also encouraged residents to re-

port such incidents. “For more seriouscrimes, detectives will oppose bail, but if thecrime is not so serious they do not. Whenlives are threatened though, detectives willoppose bail.”Referring to the apparent lack of police

visibility, Jacobs told residents that a policesector vehicle patrols the area on a daily ba-sis. “You must understand that if the vanthat patrols the area is busy with a seriouscase like a murder, then that van can be sta-tionary for some time.”He said the police are planning to increase

the number of personnel at the existing sat-ellite police station from two to 39 peopleover the next four years.

Somali shopkeepers in Wesbank say theyfear for their lives, and have nowhere toturn to for help.Two Somali nationals TygerBurger

spoke to this week said they are harassedand often robbed in the area.Despite their fears, some Somalis have

been praised by community leaders asgood and trustworthy businessmen.Pastor Cornelius Pieters, leader of the

New Hope Ministries in Wesbank, thisweek said Somali businessmen support thecommunity.“One of the leaders I spoke to went

around to several shops and managed toraise funds for 20 students who took partin a local programme,” Pieters said.He said Somalis are always eager to help.

“They left their home-country to try andmake a living in South Africa but also tosupport the community. These are goodpeople,” he added.Pieters said often community members

go to shop-owners and buy items on credit– items that are very expensive anywhereelse.

Constant attacks“They need more support from govern-

ment, I support them,” he said.According to one concerned resident, a

shop-owner had to endure being attackedwith pepper spray, while also suffering aninjury to his finger following a gunshot.Local resident Mninawe Daweti said

there are two Somali shopkeepers at thespaza shop near his house and boys in thearea would on a daily basis stand at the en-trance to the shop, blocking the passage forother customers.“During thedayyoungboyshangaround

the shop. The entrance to the shop iscrowded and it’s not easy for us as custom-ers to go and buy items.“Those boys are the ones who cause the

trouble,” Daweti alleged.He said some of the boys often break into

houses. His own premises had been brokeninto before.“It has been like this for some time and

it is becoming worse,” he said.Daweti said Somali shops are even being

broken into during the day.“The Somali community cannot do

much. They should raise these issues.”VictimisationA shopkeeper TygerBurger spoke to did

not want to elaborate on criminal activityout of fear of victimisation. He said if hespeaks to the media he might get into trou-ble.“The boys create a lot of trouble,” he said

in broken English.He said Somalis often report robberies to

the police, but police fail to respond.“We open a case, but the police do not

come.Wehave lots of problems,” the youngshopkeeper said.A fellow shopkeeper explaining by

means of hand gestures how he was oncerobbed at gunpoint.“The robber asked for money and then

ran away,” he said.“This is a problem for all of the shops,”

he said.The shop where he works had been

robbed twice so far.

de Lange after he beat Gordon Roodman atEFC Africa 32 two weeks ago.Shaun, aptly named “The Kid” at the age

of 21, is showing a lot ofmaturity in thehexa-gon and is currently unbeaten after threeprofessional fights in the welterweight divi-sion.Some EFC critics reckon this is one of the

best fights they have ever seen.“I feel honoured that people think that.

Myself and Gordon fought hard that night,it was a bloody mess. We stood and tradedstrikes all fight. Gordon, likeme is awarriorand I respect the hard work he puts in.

Great team“My coaches Dean Johnson and Earl Ab-

rahams are great, always pushing me andkeeping me focused. To be a top fighter youneed a great coaching teamand that is exact-ly what I have,” said a satisfied Shaun.

Shaun learned the art of fighting underthe guidance of GrahamTurner. But, for thelast year Shaun decided to join Lethal EdgeMMA and Fitness Centre managed and

coached by Dean Johnson.“Shaun is really growing in leaps and

bounds, he is much more refined and youcan’t help feel excited for what the future

holds for him,” says Dean.“I see him as an accomplished fighter at

21, there aren’tmany that youngwith his ex-perience.”For now, it’s back in the gym training

hard.

In his own backyardShaun trains five days a week for about

four hours a day. Covering all the basics,with no two sessions are the same.“I will love to fight in my own back yard

at GrandWest on 6 November when it’s EFCAfrica 35. I don’t have any specific fighterin mind, that is up to the EFC, so I will waitand see what they offer. My target now is tojust keep fighting in the organisation,” saidShaun.According to Dean, they would love to

have one or twomore fights before consider-ing a title bout.“I think it will be wise to give Shaun one

of two more fights before we start focusingon a potential title fight. Seeing that he onlyhas three professional fights, it only makessense to give him one or two more fights.”Shaun beat Booto Guylain and Saxon De-

lafield in his previous outings.

Championships that were held in Bloemfon-tein this year and took the silver medal inthe u-12 as well as the bronze in the u-14 re-spectively.Jesse-Leigh says that one day she would

har area, the Nomdo brothers - Stanley and

Standford together with Kelvin Smith estab-lished the Top Table Tennis Club in 2011.The Club started with only three senior
