The Kuils River cluster executed several trac-ing and crime prevention operations thisweek. This operation led to suspects beingcharged for different types of crimes such aspossession of dagga, drugs, murders and at-tempted murder.Some of these arrests also involved the Taxi

Association’s strike. Five suspects were ar-rested and one firearmwas recoveredwith sixcartridges and onemagazine. TheMfuleni po-lice also did a good job of confiscating threefirearms.In another incident a taxi driver was busy

loading passengers in the Delft area. When hetook the Stellenbosch Arterial to go toWesbank he noticed nine Quantum taxis fol-lowing him. One Quantum taxi started toshoot at the taxi driver. The five passengersand the drivermanaged to escape through thethe taxiwindows.All of themsustainedminorinjuries. Members from the Flying Squad ar-rived and five suspects were arrested.

’n Ouma van Wesbank se hart is stukkendná haar geliefde man op ’n onderduimsemanier van haar weggeneem is. Rose Gro-vers (81) vertel sy ken nie eens meer haarman vandat hy die huis verlaat het nie.

Volgens Grovers is haar man, AndrewGrovers (71), sonder haar toestemmingdeur ’n Cornelius Pietersen van die AGS-kerk uit haar sorg verwyder.

Hy’s glo toe deur hóm in die AGS-oute-huis in Kuilsrivier geplaas. “Ek het mooigekyk na my man. Hoe kon hulle hom som-mernet sowegvat?” het ’n hartseerGroversgesê. Sy sê dat haar man nog kon loop toehy daar weg is, maar nou kan hy nie eensmeer regop sit sonder hulp nie.

“Hy’s nou soos ’n zombie” het sy gesê. Alsy klerewaarmee sy hom gestuur het is ooknie meer in sy besit nie. Elke keer wanneersy hombesoek, het hy andermense se “flen-ters” aan. Sy sê sy moes R1 000-toelatings-fooi van haarman se pensioen betaal, sodathy in die ouetehuis opgeneem kon word.

Volgens haar het Pietersen aan haar gesêom haar huis en al haar besittings te ver-

koop en dan vir hom eksekuteur van dieboedel te maak. Maar volgens hom het sy’n beëdigde verklaring by die polisie onder-teken dat sy homhaar eksekuteur van haarboedel sal maak.

VeranderDit het toe egter nooit geskied nie, omdat

sy van plan verander het. Rose sê ook datsy nie kan verstaan dat hulle al haar manse pensioen gebruik en dat sy nie ’n sentdaarvan sien nie. Sy moet boonop elkemaandhaarmansebegrafnispolis vanhaarpensioen betaal.

Sy sê dat sy nie eers meer genoeg kosgeldvir die maand het nie. Volgens Pietersen isdaar nie ’n vaste bedrag wat betaal moetword nie. Dit hang glo van die pasiënt sebehoeftes af.

Martha Harris, direkteur van maatskap-like dienste, sê as Rose nie meer haar manin die ouetehuis wil hê nie, sy die aansoekkan afkeur.Maar as sy niemeer self in staatis om na hom te kyk nie, moet die saak eersondersoek word.

resident and music student, Barry Box, andhe will be showcasing that talent next week.He was scouted for his singing and per-

forming talents at a national talent competi-tion and is currently part of the South Afri-can contingent set to participate in the bi-an-nual international Applause Rising TalentShowcase in Orlando, Florida next year.Barry, who is also the pianist for one of

the University of Cape Town’s jazz ensem-

bles, thought he would try his hand at sing-ing at the first leg of the competition herein Cape Town earlier this year. “I felt confi-dent enough because while at RondeboschBoys’ High School, I was MC and singer atmy school’s cabaret,” he says proudly.“I went to the audition with what I was fa-

achieved his annual goal of doing 100 sum-mits of Platteklip Gorge on TableMountainevery year.He started in 2007, and has been going

strong since then.“I do keep my own official records every

time I do it,” he says proudly.“Yes, I am addicted to it, and get to do it

about two or three times aweek in the earlyevening after work.“This also keepsme in shape for the annu-

al Platteklip Charity Challenge where myrecord stands at six times up in one day, butwe do get a free cablecar ride down,” hequipped.The gorge is about a 600 vertical metres

to walk, 5km; and averages 6 000 steps upand down.“It takesme about an hour up and 30min-

utes down,” Jackson explained.Reaching the highest heights is more

than a passion for this Bonteheuwel resi-dent, who is planning to do the highestpeaks on every continent.

Kuils River Carnival seeks hot young talents

The Community Project Organisation inEerste River will be hosting a World AidsCommunity Health & Wellness Fun Day on1 December 2013. The event will be hostedin the Eerste River community in the Klein-vlei area. The approach for the event is toeducate communities on wellness andhealthier lifestyles.

Communities will be educated on HIV/Aids, cholesterol, healthy eating habits, ex-

ercise, etc. Various groups of nurses, doc-tors and health practitioners will be comingout to assist on the day. Community mem-bers will then have the opportunity to betested for the Aids virus, cholesterol levels,blood pressure and more.

Various booths will be set up with enter-tainment for the crowd and kids. The high-light for the day is a prize draw that will betaking place with lots of great prizes.

The Annual Toiletry and Toy Run to the Athlone School of the Blind in Bellville South tookplace recently. This event which is a collective effort between Delinquents MCC, Claw Riders,Nucking Futs, WesternCape Cruisers, Knights of St Christopher and Family Affair, spendsthe day at the facility where they treat the learners to a day of fun and entertainment. Italso ensures that each child gets a gift and some toiletries to take home for the holidays.The school currently has 409 blind and visually impaired learners, some of whom havemultiple disabilities. Most of the learners come from very poor families who are unable tomake any financial contribution towards school fees or the upkeep of their child. Bike ridesare also part of the fun and here some learners enjoy their jaunt on one of the motorbikes.

A Bonteheuwel hip-hopper is using hisunique beats to become a world-beater nextweek.

Chella83 has been in the business for anumber of years and will be releasing a mix-tape, Koppellyne Vol 1, and its not just aboutsetting world records, its about the unity inthe hip-hop culture.

The local MC and producer, started work-ing on the idea when he decided to do some-thing about the perceived hatred and bad el-ements that were associated with the scenein previous years.

“The idea was to create a mixtape and fea-ture artists from every area on the CapeFlats,” he said. “As the planning started Iwas faced with a dilemma: how am I goingto fit everybody on one mixtape? There’s justtoo much talent.”

That’s when he got the bright idea to goto Google and find out what was the biggestmixtape in history.

In the hip-hop culture a mixtape is a sort

of compilation of music or beats over whichthe artists are doing their spoken word.

Chella83 says that he came across therecord in the Guinness Book of Records siteand found that it stood at 61 tracks.

“I wanted to challenge that so eightmonths later I think that we have unofficial-ly broken that record with 80 tracks, andmore than 50 artists featured.

“This is Koppellyne Vol 1, it is how weprove to the rest of the world that the CapeFlats, being notorious for gangsterism, cannow be known for good music, because ourtheme for this project was, peace, love andunity, mostly focusing on the unity aspect.

“It was a very hard, stressful time of mylife, making the beats, writing, recording,thinking up concepts, but we made it, andwe are proud to say we beat the world atsomething.”

The launch for this project will be takingplace on Friday 6 December at The AfricanDrum in Halt Road Elsies River.

Daar is ook die gladdemond en sjarmantepsigopaat wat vinnige opgang in die korpo-ratiewe werkplek maak. Hy hou van diepolsende dinamika van ’n amper chaotiesewerksomgewing, waar vinnige besluite be-langrik is. Hy gebruik kwesbare vroue virseks en geld, maar is oppervlakkig en kort-stondig in sy verhoudings.

Alles draai net om sy eie beeld en behoef-tes. Sy manipulasie kan verwar word metleierskap.

Die vermoë om mense sover te kry om joute volg is leierskap, maar dis psigopatiesetrekke wanneer jy mense daartoe manipu-leer met charisma en leuens.

Nog ’n voorbeeld is die jong vrou wathaar middeljarige ouers verslae, bekom-merd en radeloos laat. Sy drink en gebruikdwelms, raak deurmekaar met allerhandegure karakters, gee nie om vir haar kindersen vestig geen goeie langtermyn verhou-dinge nie. Sy misbruik haar familie omgeld te kry, toon geen skaamte daaroor nie,en blameer ander vir haar situasie.

Dan is daar die psigopaat wat ’n meisiesal misbruik. Hy mishandel haar fisiek enemosioneel; doen roekelose impulsiewedinge. Hy manipuleer die meisie, sodat syinval by wat hy wil doen, sonder dat hywerklik omgee vir haar siening en behoef-tes. Hy kom nie sy beloftes na nie, maar paktog die skuld op haar.

Die aanwesigheid van genoemde ken-merke maak nie iemand noodwendig ’n psi-gopaat nie. Laat die diagnose vir ’n psigo-paat in die hande van professionele kundi-ges.

Om egter vroegtydig kennis en waarsku-wing te neem wanneer iemand oor trekkevan ’n psigopaat beskik, kan jou uiteindelikbaie verdriet, skade en ellende in jou per-soonlike en finansiële lewe, sowel as werks-omgewing, spaar.

Leerders van die Primêre Skool Symphonyin Belhar se liefde vir die poësie word ge-slyp deur twee skitter-onnies van Bellville– en dít wys in die trofeë wat hulle elke jaarinoes.

Hesna van Dewenter is ’n leerondersteu-ningsonderwyser en sy het twee jaar geledebegin om die kinders vir eisteddfods af terig. Sy sê dit gaan soms broekskeur hier,maar “hul is so talentvol dat ek die geleent-heid moes aangryp”.

“Verlede jaar het ons drie medaljes by dieKaapse eisteddfod verower, en dié jaar se-we!” vertel sy trots. Die skool kry borge omhulle na dié prestige-aand te vervoer.

Die ander komponent in dié wenspan isSunette du Plessis, ’n onderwyser by die La-erskool Bellpark, en ook ’n jeugdigter.

The City of Cape Town on Thursday an-nounced they are ready for the onset of thefestive season.Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, a city

spokesman, said in a statement that all serv-ices were ready to welcome visitors from allover, and that their key aim is to keep every-one safe and services up and running.An integrated Festive Season Co-ordinat-

ingCommittee led byRichardBosman, exec-utive director of Safety and Security, hascome up with an operational plan to keeprisks to a minimum.Key highlights of the plan are:VDisasterRiskManagement staff, assisted

by volunteers, will be deployed across thecity at beaches and swimming pools to pro-vide support services to lifeguards and lawenforcement staff. They will also be on dutyat tourist destinations to ensure crowd con-trol.

VAsa result of the successful roll-out of theIdentiKidz programme last year, the initia-tive will be extended to 26 beaches managedby the city.

VThe Disaster Risk Management Centrewill also run a fire safety campaign through-out the festive season to highlight the dan-gers of fires and to teach communities howto avoid fires.

VA dedicated festive season hotline is op-erational to deal with any complaints re-garding services, repairs and maintenanceat any of the city’s beaches, swimming poolsand other recreational facilities. The hotlinenumber is 021 597 6003.

VThe city’s Law Enforcement teams willwork closely with their counterparts at pro-vincial and national level to ensure effectivelaw enforcement on the ground.

VLawEnforcement teamswill be on patrolat the city’s busiest beaches. The public isreminded that liquor at beaches is strictlyprohibited. Offenders’ liquor will be confis-cated and a hefty fine of R500 and court no-tice awaits them.

VThe first batch of 33 volunteer auxiliaryLaw Enforcement officers will boost opera-tional capacity by joining in on patrols.

VA geographical deployment plan hasbeen drawn up to ensure the most effectivedeployment of resources during this festiveseason.

VPriority days have also been identified,where extra officers will be deployed on ac-tive duty.

VTraffic Services will focus on vehicle

safety with Operation Exodus. Their aim isto help reduce the road death toll.

VTherewill be a strongemphasis onpublictransport vehicles and officers will be sta-tioned at Joe Gqabi, Bellville/Parc Du Cap,Mfuleni, Langa, Du Noon, Cape Town Sta-tion, R27 and Epping.

VTraffic Services will also be attendingtraditional festive events such as the Min-strel events, and will be deployed around allof the beaches.

VFree vehicle safety checks will be con-ducted between 2 and 20 December, Mondayto Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 at Joe Gqabi,Bellrail, Brackenfell, Durbanville, Good-wood, Hillstar and Kuils River testing sta-tions.

VMetro Police will be focusing primarilyon driver and vehicle fitness, drunk driving,the enforcement of bylaws and the transpor-tation and dealing of illegal narcotics.

VPatrols will also be conducted in the vi-cinity of places of entertainment, routes toand frommajor shopping centres, tourist at-tractions, and businesses and suburbs.

VThe city has employed 120 seasonal fire-fighters on a contract basis from Novemberto March, who are deployed at various firestations to assist firefighters with vegeta-tion fires.

VThe Fire and Rescue Service has alsostarted training 75 reservist firefighterswhowill have to volunteer at least 24 hours oftheir time per month.

VIn addition, the service has procured spe-cialised 4x4 compressed air foam tankers tohelp put out fires, especially in the informalareas.

VTwo helicopters and a spotter airplanehave been procured for the summer seasonto operate from Newlands and the Stellen-bosch airfield.

VThe city’s Environmental Health sec-tion, together with Water and Sanitation’sScientific Services section, will have an in-creased focus on monitoring food premises,accommodation establishments, public ab-lution facilities and special events.

VThe city has budgeted R10,5 million forcleaning, including refuse removal that willcontinue uninterrupted. More than 2 352 ex-tra cleansing staff have been appointed.

VThe Sport, Recreation andAmenities De-partment has planned approximately 1 500holiday programmes which will run dailyfrom 5 December 2013 to 15 January 2014.The programmes will be presented at the

city’s various recreational hubs, swimmingpools, beaches, resorts and sport fields.

VThe Department will kick off the SafeSummer Season campaign with a free con-cert and recreational programmes on 30 No-vember 2013 atMuizenbergBeach from10:00to 19:00.

VThe inaugural CampCapeTownwill alsotake place from 8 to 14 December 2013 atZandvlei Resort.

VApproximately 250 trained and accredit-ed lifeguards will be deployed to variousbeaches between 10:00 and 18:00 daily.

VThe city will make beach wheelchairsavailable at 10 of its beaches.

VTheCity is pleased to announce the open-ing of six spray parks in December. Theparks are for physically impaired children,and are situated in Du Noon, Ocean View,Scottville, Khayelitsha, Valhalla Park andNyanga.

VThere will also be 226 lifeguards on dutyat the city’s 36 public swimming pools –which will be open between 10:00 and 17:00daily. Blue Downs, Long Street, Strand andSea Point swimming pools will be open from07:00 to 19:00 daily.

VAn additional 86 temporary workerswere also employed to assist with safety andsecurity awareness and guiding patrons tosafer swimming spots on the beaches.

VA total of 30 Shark Spotters will be de-ployed this Festive Season at Glencairn,Clovelly, Muizenberg Corner, Fish Hoek, StJames, Kalk Bay, Noordhoek, MonwabisiBeach and Kogel Bay (The Caves).

VThe Festive Season kicks off with a freepublic concert at the Grand Parade on Sun-day 1December 2013, followed by the switch-ing on of the festive lights inAdderley Streetlater that evening.

TheSoweto StringQuartet have recentlyreleased a second volume of “Afri-kaanse Treffers”.

The ensemble visited the Orange Couch totalk about the groupwhen theywere inCapeTown to promote Soweto String Quartet singAfrikaanse Treffers, Vol 2.“Soweto String Quartet (SSQ) was formed

way back in 1978 by four young boys,” ex-plains Sandile Khemese.“At the time we belonged to a group that

was calledSowetoSymphonyOrchestra,” heexplains, adding that theywere theyoungestmembers of the part-time orchestra.“We decided to form Soweto String Quar-

tet because I thinkwe had this ambition anddesire to actually pursue music as our ca-reer,” he says.Sandile is joined in the group by Thami

Khemese, Makhosini Mnguni and ThembaMachobane.

TouringThe group have more than just made a ca-

reer out of music; they even spent time tour-ing with ex-president Nelson Mandela andare said to be his favourite music group.“At the time, beforeMandela becamepres-

ident, South Africa was a focal point of theworld because we were looking at the newdemocracy,” Thami explains, adding thatSSQwas also emerging at the time, no longerbound by apartheid rules.“We became the quartet that Mandela

would tour with across the world,” he says,adding: “Because he had to convince inves-tors across the world that South Africa wasready.”“So wherever he went Soweto String

Quartet was there,” Thami says.Makhosini explains that the group decid-

ed to record Afrikaans songs because they

see themselves as custodians of South Afri-can culture.Merchant Music approached the group to

record an album and being versatile, Ma-khosini says they asked to do something dif-ferent.“They brought themusic to us, we listened

to it and we injected the SSQ groove in it,”Makhosini says.

GoldThe first Afrikaans album was so success-

ful it went gold in two months. The albumalso saw the group performing at the coun-try’s biggest Afrikaans festivals which inturn saw their Afrikaans fan base grow, somuch so, that there was great demand for asecond Afrikaans album.Soweto String Quartet sing Afrikaanse

Treffers, Vol 2 is made up of 14 well-knowntraditional Afrikaans and Afrikaans popsongs and includes guests Dozi, GerhardSteyn, Anton Goosen and Juanita du Plessis.“The album has got big names in the Afri-

kaans music scene,” Sandile says, adding:

“This is the first time we have recorded theiconic songs and I think this actually saysa lot about the willingness of Soweto StringQuartet to embrace all the cultures of thiscountry.”“We are just musicians and we are wor-

ried about the wellness of our country,”Sandile says.He says: “We have got to leave a legacy

for young people to follow. Basically to helpyoung people one day become well-roundedcitizens of the country,” Sandile explains.SSQ hopes to eventually record some of

The Northern Suburbs Schools u-15cricket team have once again beatentheir more illustrious provincial oppo-

nents, this time in a return match over 40overs recently played at Groote Schuur HighSchool.

With the past T20 matches ending 1-1 be-tween the North u-15 and WP u-15A, and alsoending 1-1 the week before between theNorth u-15 and WP u-15B, the advent of a 40-over match to decide the series was a mouth-watering prospect.

North bowlers Wentzel van Zyl (Bracken-fell) 1-13 (5 overs) and Mathew Valentine(Chesterhouse) 0-14 (5 overs) set the tone

with accurate line and length bowling, sup-ported throughout the innings with Northbowlers conceding very few extras and most-ly keeping the WP batsmen in check.

TotalMuhammad Saloojee (Rondebosch-WP)

scored a fine 33 while Jesse Christianson(Wynberg Boys-WP) took his chances withan attacking 35, however the North stuck totheir game plan of containment restrictingWP to a modest total of 177/8 in their 40 overinnings.

The North prepared itself for the on-slaught from the WP quick bowlers, finding

themselves 31 for 3 inside 7 overs with MikaEkstrom (Wynberg Boys-WP) taking all 3wickets. However a steady 66 run 4th wicketpartnership between opening batsman An-gelo Yiatses (Chesterhouse) and Kyle Hoefer(Milnerton) steadied the innings taking theNorth to 97/3 at the 20 over tea break.

StrikeWP however struck immediately after the

resumption with off-spinner Suhail White(Rondebosch-WP) removing Hoefer andBrandon de Kock (Brackenfell) in succes-sive deliveries. Suhail delivered anotherdouble blow in his 3rd over, which included

the set batsman Yiatses for a well played 58.At 118/7 the North looked vulnerable how-

ever with a deep batting lineup and in-formBen Ward (Parklands) striding to the crease,the North were still quietly confident ofchasing down the remaining 60 runs re-quired.

A confident 46 run 8th wicket partnershipwould see the North to 164/8 with Ward ex-hibiting a classy and fluent captain’s knockof 27 runs before being caught on the deepsquare boundary. Evert Carstens (Stellen-berg) 16* and Mikhail Davis (Chesterhouse)13* took the North over the finishing line,for an exciting 2 wicket victory.
