gesin se huis in Kuilsrivier, steun die mavan dié tennis-kampioen haar seun ewegeesdriftig.YvonneKlaasen, diemavandie tennisspe-

ler Raven Klaasen, het gesê die gesin is baietrots op sy prestasie. Ravenhet verledeweeksaam met sy dubbelspelmaat, Eric Butorac,in die eindstryd van dié Grand Slam-toer-nooi gespeel.Dié ma het verlede week haar seun met

valkoë by die gesin se huis in Shirleystraatin Sarepta dopgehou, terwyl hy teen ander

swaargewig-tennisspelers op die Rod Laver-arena in Melbourne meegeding het.“Ek was baie emosioneel, sy pa ook.”Yvonne, haar man Japie, en hul ander

twee kinders, Kevin en Lynn, is almal krani-ge tennisspelers.

Vermag“Ons as gesin is trots op hom en dit wat

hyvermaghet. Ons is baie bly vir hom,maarook hartseer omdat ons nie fisiek daar kanwees nie,” het Yvonne vertel.“Dit wat hy bereik het is vir ons ’n droom

wat waar geword het.“Ons telefoonhet totnou toenognie ophou

lui nie. Die mense bel van oral om ons gelukte wens... oproepe uit Amerika, Engeland enIerland,” het Yvonne vertel.

Sy het almal bedank vir hul gebede en on-dersteuning. “Raven het nog altyd ’n passiegehad vir tennis. Hy het drie operasies aansy knieë gehad wat ’n terugslag was, maarhy het aanhou oefen en weer begin speel.”Sy het Raven beskryf as ’n toegewyde ten-

nisspeler en ’n voorbeeld vir die res van diegesin. “Die operasies was swaar. Hy het ge-sukkel en het in ’n stadium gewonder of ditdie moeite werd is. Hy het egter volhard.

Televisie“As ek hom op die televisie sien speel, dan

moet ekmyself soms knyp om seker temaakdis die werklikheid.”Oor sy oorwinning in die halfeindstryd

van die Australiese Ope het sy gesê: “Ek hetnie woorde om die gevoel te beskryf nie.”

As kind het sy ma hom afgerig. “Toe hy10 jaar oud was, het sy pa oorgeneem en sohet hy verbeter.”Sy held as kind was die Amerikaanse ten-

nis-legende, Pete Sampras. Raven het op 14-jarige ouderdomby die Suid-Afrikaanse ten-nis-akademie in Johannesburg aangesluit.“Sy pa het soggens vroeg met hom opge-

staan en gaan draf. Soms was hulle al 05:00op die pad.” Raven speel later vanjaar ookby Wimbledon, sowel as die Franse en Ame-rikaanse Opes.Hy tree later vanjaar in die huwelik met

sy vriendin, Celeste Jantjies. Raven wordtans deur Stefan de Kock afgerig.V Raven en sy dubbelspelmaat is in die eindstryd weluitgeskakel, maar hy was die enigte Suid­Afrikanerwat verder as die vierde ronde gevorder het.

New life is coming from a community gar-den courtesy of New Life, a non-profit com-munity organisation that operates in theUitsig area.The organisation provides therapeutic

and educational support to neglected andabused children and their families.Through its outreach programme, chil-

dren are able to access quality mainstreameducation through community-based homeschooling units that are run by trained vol-unteers.According toRonelViljoen, PR councillor

for the area, the food garden was built to en-hance the community by offering freshhome-grown vegetables to the school nearthe facility, and as the garden expands thecommunity will be able help in the gardenand be “paid” by receiving vegetables.“A restaurant in Tyger Valley is also in-

terested in buying vegetables from NewLife,” says Viljoen.“We are also researching recipes in order

to preserve someof the products for thewin-ter months.”

Food supplyThe organisation identified the open area

of land adjacent to its premises as a suitablelocation for the development of a food gar-den.“The whole aim of this project is to pro-

vide a nutritious food supply for use by itsprogramme participants,” continues Vil-joen.“In addition, the food garden will provide

employment and subsistence to the mainte-nance workers who will be appointed totend the garden.”Work on the food garden has commenced

and has received ward allocation fundingand a donation from New Life for coveringthe cost of erecting a wall and fence to en-close the area.The subcouncil is working in cooperation

with the Department of Social Develop-ment, which has agreed to fund the employ-ment of two workers under the Expanded

Public Works Programme (EPWP) for thefirst two months.A third worker has volunteered his serv-

ices and will assist with maintaining the fa-cility.Compost, seedlings and training is also

being provided by the Department of SocialDevelopment.

poster artwork of the film Mandela: LongWalk To Freedom as the inlay/cover fortheir pirated discs to make it appear legiti-mate.The film was released on 28 November

2013 at cinemas in South Africa and has

subsequently been released in the UnitedKingdom, the United States, Canada,France, Holland, Portugal, Israel, Iceland,Switzerland, Belgium and the Middle East.Germany, Finland, Norway, Spain, Den-

mark, New Zealand and India will releasethe film later this month.

format anywhere in the world and the pi-rates are defrauding the public.Producer, Anant Singh, says: “We have

At the hospital doctors thought she was nolonger alive. A last attempt to resuscitateher was performed and now several weekslater, she is showing signs of a positive im-provement. An improvement that has beendescribed by family members as a miracle.

This is the story of little Cayley Habel-gaarn (3), who recently had to be hospital-ised following a near fatal drowning inci-dent on December 17.

“I was busy at the table and Cayley wasplaying around me. She disappeared. Weran out and when we got to the door we sawher lying in the pool,” grandfather, LeonHabelgaarn explained.

The family then rushed her to the KuilsRiver Hospital.

Charnay Habelgaarn, Cayley’s motherand third year physiotherapy student, said:“I started performing CPR.”

On their way to the hospital the mothercontinued to try and resuscitate her daugh-ter. At the time Cayley had no heartbeat.

Trauma“As I performed mouth to mouth there

was foam coming out of her mouth.”Grandfather Leon added: “Her tongue

was blue and her tummy swollen; we sus-pect she might have swallowed some wa-ter.”

Cayley was rushed to the trauma unit.At one point one of the doctors said to his

staff that it appeared that Cayley was notalive, the family said. The doctors contin-ued the resuscitation.

“One doctor, they call him the prophet. Heis always where he is most needed, treatedher,” the father said.

The doctors soon managed to get Cayleybreathing.

“They struggled for nearly 20 minutes toget a heartbeat,” the grandfather said.

“On her first day she started to respondalready.

“So far she has had no major setbacks,”Charney said.

Cayley was kept in ICU until Christmas

Day.“I looked at her, and she looked lifeless.

I told my dad at one point she was gone andI thought this can’t behappening tome. I felthopeless.

“As a physiotherapy student we performour training on dummies and on that dayI had to do it onmy own child. I thought thischild is gone. Her body looked frail and frag-ile. Only when we got to the hospital was Iat peace,” the mother said.

Since the accident Cayley has been able

to move her eyes and fingers which used tobe clinched. She is also able to utter sounds,though she is still unable to recognise herfamily.

Cayley will be discharged into the care ofher family soon. She will receive homebased care. Charnay said the accident hasinspired her to continue her studies so thatshe might be able to help Cayley with herrecovery.Charmaine Habelgaarn, grand-mother, said theywish to thank the hospitaland staff for the service they had received.

A history of battling a drug addiction;sleeping on the streets and being jailedfor the possession of drugs has not de-

terred a Kuils River women from pursuingher dream: helping others.Instead an addiction and the problems that

accompanied it inspired her to pursue a ca-reer as a social worker. These days she helpsothers who – similar to her a few years ago– are caught in the drug trap.“Themost important thingever, it doesnot

carewho you are,where you come from, howwell you are educated, how many degreesyou have or what your parents do...it willtake you,” Cindy van Andel from Highbury,Kuils River said.She has been drug-free since 2008.

Exposed“For someone like me this was a wake-up

call. I never thought that it could take me.Growing up in high school I often heard peo-ple do drugs, I was never one to experiment.“People say your teenage years are the

years you experiment but mine happenedwhen I was 23 years old.”She left high school to study psychology

and worked as a waitress at a restaurant.“I came into contact with people where I

was exposed.“I thought I could handle it.“You think you can cope, in doing so I

made myself vulnerable,” she explained.Cindy’s drug of choice was tik.“Nobody tells you it’s addictive, and that

you can’t live without it,”she added.Cindy left her home soon afterwards and

spent several months on the streets.She also fell pregnant.“We moved from one place to the next.

There was no stability.“At somepoint youdon’t havea jobbutyou

have money for drugs.“That got me locked up. At that point my

son was about eight months old. They tookhimawayandplacedhim in the care of socialworkers.”

TrappedHer battle to get custody of her son forced

her to learn all she could about the field ofsocial working.“I did not know what was going on. It was

scary, I cried a lot.”Cindy recovered from her drug addiction

and was then readmitted to university in

2010.She graduated two years later as a social

worker and today she assists NGOs andyoungsters caught in the same trap.“It was a personal mission of mine. I have

seen what it can do to people, but have alsoseen people come back from it.“I have nearly lost friends to it, I nearly

lost my husband and could’ve lost myself toit. I have a soft spot in my heart for peoplewhohave to battle the addiction andwith thesocial work and psychology background Iwant to go out and help, but also inspire peo-ple,” Cindy said.

is die enigste een van die oorspronk-like groep wat nog by die buurtwagwerk.“Ek sal nog hier werk tot ek nie

meer kan nie.“As ek nie werk nie, voel ek hulpe-

loos. Ek kan nie stilsit nie,” het sy by-gevoeg.Magdalena enhaar kollegas patrol-

leer Vrydae die strate van Wesbank.“Daarna beweeg ons oor na MfulenienHappyValley. Soms is ons net drievroue wat werk,” het sy gesê.Die wagte deursoek mense in die

– ondanks die aard van haar werk –nog nooit regtig in gevaar was nie.“Daar was by ’n geleentheid in die

gebied geskiet, Ons het dit gesien,maar die polisie gekontak,” het sy ge-sê.“As ek deur die strate stap dan sê

die mense daar kom die buurtwag.Almal ken my, veral die kinders.”Ricardo le Roux, ’n gemeenskaps-

werker, het gesê baie van die oor-spronklike lede het uitgeval weensgeen betaling of versekering nie.“Party van hulle het nie werk nie,

ander sien om na vrouens en kin-ders,” het hy gesê. Volgens hom le-wer die buurtwag ’n groot bydrae totdie bekamping van misdaad.“Die mense van die buurtwag is

passievolle mense, mense wat lief isvir die werk,” het Le Roux bygevoeg.

Theft of motor vehicles in the Kuils Riverpolice cluster has become a major concernfor authorities in recent months.Capt Nomathemba Muavha, spokesper-

son for the Mfuleni police station, saidmembers of the Mfuleni police recently re-covered a hijacked vehicle moments after ithad been stolen.“The members were patrolling the area

when they spotted a suspicious vehicle.“When approaching the vehicle, the driv-

er accelerated and the police started chas-ing it. The police caught up with the sus-pects and they were arrested. They had anunlicensed firearm in their possession.“At the time of this incident at the Mfule-

The battle against drugs in Delftcontinues as police made anoth-er big bust in the area.

Last week police swooped ondrug dens in the area and man-aged to confiscate illegal drugsthat included three 200 litredrums filled with dagga.

“We are consistently address-ing crime operations throughstop and search operations aswell as through swooping ondrug outlets and making a dentin the drug trade,” said ColonelBasil Vallai, acting station com-mander at Delft.

He praised his officers fortheir concerted efforts and po-licing strategies employed in op-erations last week.

These operations includedsearching several outlets wherethe major haul was the 150kg ofdagga stored in the three largedrums.

Police also seized quantitiesof tik, mandrax, as well as alco-hol from an illegal shebeen.

According to Vallai a 45-year-old female has been arrested forthe huge dagga bust.

He also said that the estimat-ed street value of the drugsseized is more than R200 000 and22 suspects will appear in courtsoon on charges of drug posses-sion.

“I want to assure the publicthat Delft SAPS is dedicated topolicing the scourge of drugs inDelft and further operations ofthis nature will be carried outconsistently.”

Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, woordvoerdervan die Kuilsrivier-polisie, het gesê ’n ver-gadering is onlangs tussen hom, die gebiedse sektorbestuurder, Jacob van der Walt, endie kompleks se hoof van sekerheid, PaulBeneke, gehou waartydens veiligheidsas-pekte bespreek is.

“Ons het opgemerk die misdade in Stel-lendale Village neem toe.

“Ons het koppe bymekaar gesit om te kykhoe ons die probleem kan aanspreek,” hetVan Niekerk gesê.

Volgens hom is 90 % van die inwoners bydie kompleks gedurende die dag by diewerk.

“Deur die loop van die dag is daar dus niemense nie. Op daardie tye is daar huisbrakeen dit styg,” het Van Niekerk bygevoeg.

Hy het gesê die kompleks is omhein, maardat die booswigte soms gate onder die se-mentmuur grawe en sodoende toegang totdie kompleks verkry.

“Die outjies sit agter die bosse. Hulle gra-we ’n gat onderdeur die muur en breek danby die huis in.

“Niemand sien hulle nie. Hulle het oorge-noeg tyd om hul dade te pleeg,” het Van Nie-kerk verduidelik.

Hy het gesê ’n werksooreenkoms is tus-sen die polisie en die sekerheidswagte aan-gegaan.

“Hulle het meer sekerheidswagte aange-stel. Hulle het eers net binne gekonsentreerop veiligheid, maar doen ook nou buite pa-trolliewerk.

“Daar is ook meer wagte buite. Hulle hetook begin om die bosse af te kap,” het hygesê.

Van die polisie se kant af is daar meer pa-trollievoertuie beskikbaar gestel.

“Daar is meer sigbare polisiëring in diegebied. Die samewerkende verhouding metdie inwoners is goed.

“Hulle patrolleer saam met die wagte.Deur die loop van die aand hou ons as poli-sie meer bloulig-patrollies.

“Ons het die patrollies vermeerder enwanneer die polisiebeamptes iets verdagopmerk, dan stel ons die wagte in kennis,”het Van Niekerk gesê.

Soms daag hulle hier op ’n dag of twee nadatdie skole begin het. Ek het nie ’n probleemdaarmee nie.”Toe die kinders teen die eerste dag van

skool nog nie by die huis opgedaag het nie,

het sy die Laerskool Wesbank-Nommer 1 in-gelig dat hulle later skool toe sou kom.“Daar gekom, toe sê die sekretaresse ek

moet sit. Toe sê sydiekinders sebesonderhe-de en dokumente is deur ’n ander laerskoolaangevra en daarheen gestuur.”Volgens die ma het die kinders se pa, Jo-

seph Kriel, hulle by die Laerskool Joosten-berg ingeskryf.Sy het haar vervreemde kêrel probeer

kontak, maar kon hom nog nie in die handekry nie.Die ma is nou bekommerd oor die wel-

stand van haar kinders, omdat die lewens-omstandighede by die pa, volgens haar, niena wense is nie.

tenberg ontvang waarin die vertrekkaartversoek het. Die pa wil die kinders daar in-skryf,” het die hoof gesê.Die vorms is aan hulle deurgestuur.“Ons het aan die ma verduidelik dat ons

Safety for scholars is the concern of the Bishop LavisScholar Transport Forum which is calling for the sup-port of all in the business.Stephen Hector, secretary of the organisation said

Op 13 Maart sal duisende hoërskoolleer-ders deelneem aan die eerste ronde van dieSuid-AfrikaanseWiskunde-Olimpiade (SA-WO) by skole reg oor die land.Registrasie vir hierdie toonaangewende

kompetisie sluit op 7 Februarie.Die SAWO is die grootste olimpiade in

Suid-Afrika en vind sedert 1966 jaarliksplaas. Dit word georganisseer deur dieSuid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde-stigting(SAWS) en geborg deurHarmony-goudmynen die Suid-Afrikaanse Instituut vir Geok-trooieerde Rekenmeesters (SAGR).Dit geskied oor drie rondes en bestaanuit

’n junior afdelingvir graad 8 en 9, en ’n seni-or afdeling vir graad 10 tot 12. Die eersteronde van die olimpiade bestaan uit 20 vraemet veelkeusige antwoorde. Dit word by af-sonderlike skole geskryf en gemerk deuronderwysers.
