PolisiemanDié nuwe man, wat homself as ’n polisie-

man voorgedoen het, vertel toe skielik virLena dat “almal” sê die man saammet hullehet R10 500 opgetel.“Hy wou weet of ek ook geld getrek het.

taal met haar bankkaart, sê sy. Die R10 000was deel van haar man se pensioenuitbeta-ling.Lena sê Leon is toe huis toe met die inko-

pies, terwyl sydie saakbydie polisiekantoorgaan aanmeld het.“Toe ek daar kom, toe is daar ’n anderman

wat dieselfde oorgekom het. My man en syneef het toe daar aangekom, en ons is saam

bank toe. Ons het toe die res van die geld on-middellik gaan vas belê.Lena kon darem iets van die ‘polisieman’

uitmaak. “Die skuldige het ’n groot letsel opsy wang. Hulle is vier mans en een vrou,”sê sy.

of geneem word deur ’n ‘polisiebeampte’ by’n OTM en wat dan na die polisiekantoor ge-neem moet word om ‘geverifieer’ te wordnie,” sê kol. Joan Stroebel, hoof van dieKleinvlei-polisie.“Van die polisie se kant, as mense twyfel,

dered why all the lights were defective afterthe Gaylee/Buttskop turn-off (between theBrights Hardware Store and Penhill).He’s not the only one. TygerBurger spoke

to a long-standing resident of Penhill, theresidential area next to that part of the roadmost affected by the lack of lighting.“We have no street lights in Penhill, but

that was because the residents didn’t wantany,” Arthur Wyngaard told TygerBurger.Arthur is the principal of a pre-school in

Penhill. He makes daily trips in and out of

the area across the newly revamped bridgeat that part of the road, to collect and depositchildren.“There have never been lights (on this

stretch of road). When the city revampedthe bridge last year, they installednew lampposts, but the lights have never worked,” hesaid.He explained that it affects residents of

the area in a number of ways.“It’s very inconvenient. My wife can’t go

to church at night. Since they’ve revampedthe bridge, it’s very nice going out (of Pen-hill), but now it’s just the lights that needto switched on.”“There have beenmany accidents on that

bridge. My own son had an accident there.But since the revamp, I think the numberof accidents has decreased,” he said.The city has responded that they are well

aware of the defective lighting, and thatthey were in the process of getting it fixed.“The poles for the street lights were in-

stalled in a previous financial year. Theproject to install the cabling is currently un-der way,” said Councillor Ernest Sonnen-berg, mayoral committee member for utili-ty services.“The cabling can only be installed once

Eskom have completed the electrical con-nection, so that we can energise the equip-ment as the installation progresses, to pre-vent cable theft.“The area in question is a high-risk area

for cable theft and vandalism,” he said.“Wehave ordered thematerial, appointed

the contractor and have paid Eskom for theconnection.”“The project is scheduled for completion

by the end of February 2014,” he said.

Armed robbers from Mfuleni didn’t stand achance against the swift action by patrol-ling police. Within just five minutes one ofthem was apprehended.

A quick-thinking shop owner called a po-lice patrol vehicle after he was robbed atabout 10:25 on Friday morning, and gave adescription of the three robbers.

They had posed as clients wanting to buyparaffin in a container. However, the con-tainer was too big to fit through the holethrough which the shopkeeper usuallytrades, colonel Tembinkosi Kinana, provin-cial police spokesman said.

The owner was then forced to open the

gate. “Oncehe opened the gate the three sus-pects, of which two were armed with fire-arms, forced their way into the shop,” Ki-nana said.

The suspects fled the scene on foot withan undisclosed amount of cash, three car-tons of cigarettes andR400worth of airtime.

“Around 10:30, while (police) memberswere busy patrolling the area in search ofthe suspects, they spotted the three,who ranin different directions at the sight of the po-lice.

“The (police) members managed to arrestone of the suspects and found three cartonsof cigarettes in his possession,” Kinana

said.The 23-year-old suspect from Khayelitsha

was then taken back to the crime scene andidentified by the shopkeeper as one of thethree armed robbers. He appeared in theBlue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Mondayon charges of business robbery.

The police thanked the public for theirvigilance in the fight against crime and formaking use of the sector cellular policenumber, which led to the arrest of the sus-pect.V Anyone with information regarding the outstand­ing two suspects can contact Crime Stop on 0860010111 or any other police station.

Armed robber detained within minutes

Wesbank drug lords were in for a shockwhen police swooped on their illicit opera-tions and confiscated large numbers of nar-cotics.

The Kuils River cluster of police ran jointstop and search operations in the streets.They also executed a number of search war-rants from early morning on Thursday, ColTembinkosi Kinana, provincial policespokesman, said in a report.

In Richmond Street alone, police confis-cated 45 g of tik after a search. It had an esti-mated street value of R35 000. Besides thetik, they found an undisclosed sum of cashand R390 in counterfeit money.

Operations at a house in Martinus VanSchalkwyk Street produced 9 g of tik ofabout R2 600, as well as an undisclosed sumof cash.

“The members also followed up on infor-mation received on illegal drug activitieswhich led to the arrest of a man in posses-sion of four sachets of tik,’ he said.

Five suspects, aged between 26 and 47, in-cluding a woman, have been arrested on

various charges, ranging frompossession ofdrugs to dealing in drugs. They appeared inthe Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Fri-day.

“Drugs are one of the main contributingfactors that destroy our communities, peo-ple are thereforewarned to reject and reportits circulation to police,” he said.

This is an open letter to allbusinesses within the greaterBellville and Parow areas thatsell or serve liquor to membersof the public, especially tothose who are already underthe influence. Having been inoperation for the past 12months, the Voortrekker RoadCorridor Improvement District(VRCID) needs to voice itsconcern regarding the illegalsale of alcohol to personsalready under the influence ofalcohol.

The law is clear; no businessmay sell or serve alcohol toanother person who is alreadyunder the influence of alcohol.

By doing so, businesses arecontributing towards alcohol-ism, anti-social behaviour andpossibly even sexual violenceagainst women and children.

From the VRCID’s point ofview, we are adamant thatbusinesses within the VRCIDmust take note and stop thispractice immediately. Theirstaff need to be informed thatthey may not sell liquor if theperson buying the liquor isalready under the influence;ignorance of the law is noexcuse. The end result of thispractice is that the VRCIDmust spend of its time andbudget finances to attend toanti-social behaviour andpublic violence (fighting). It isunfair to law abiding VRCIDlevy payers that the minoritytakes advantage of thoseaddicted to alcohol.

In most instances, it is thepoorest of the poor who aretaken advantage of by suchbusinesses. All that thesebusinesses are interested in ismaking money; they do notcare about the person once heor she steps from the premisesafter they have bought orconsumed alcohol. Anotherissue which the VRCID cleans-ing teams and also the City ofCape Town has to deal with, isthe number of empty cheapalcohol plastic containers that

I find this report quiteamusing and laughable to saythe least. It is clear that theseaccusations are based on liesand sensation, and to drum upsupport and sympathy from thereaders.

Was there no other wayBrandt could have identified theofficer concerned, other thanhis name tag? Why did he failto lay a charge against theofficer? Is there a case, or is itonly a poor attempt to discreditthe said officer, and to cover uphis own wrong-doing?

He also portrays himself as asaint i.e. like coming fromChurch on a Sunday morningwith his children while theofficer is smelling like liquorwhilst on duty, the officer beingracist.

It is a known fact that thesecars are modified not for theiraesthetic value but purely toshow off and race whereverthey please. Once they shift inbehind the steering wheels ofthese cars they become dement-ed individuals with a totaldisregard for the safety of otherroad users. They are potentialmurderers who think the roadbelongs to them. I witness thisevery day.

A few weeks ago I was on myway to visit relatives during thedays of extreme rain.

Everything had been goingaccording to the schedule untilreality struck. I had to drivethrough a flooded section beforeI could reach my destination.Just there and then my carswitched off and I could not getit working again.

I immediately switched on myhazards and a young manapproached me offering to helpby giving me a jump start. Itdidn’t help so he proposedtowing my vehicle back homeand I agreed.

I repeatedly apologised fortaking up his time when hecould be doing something elseinstead. When we reached myhome I offered to reward himwith cash. He said it wasn’tnecessary, but I insisted and heeventually took the money.

I told him what he had donewas extraordinary as he hadstopped and helped me. Witheverything happening in society,he had every reason not to stopand help. People claim to have avehicle problem, but insteadthey hijack or even kill peopleafter getting them to stop.

This incident taught me to doa good deed. That same day myneighbour had engine problemsand I helped them with a pushstart. If we can all stand togeth-er and reunite we could over-come all social and economicchallenges.
