Following his recent success at a natio-nal break-dance competitionanddespi-te suffering an ankle injury, Brandon

“The Curse” Petersen – a B-Boy from BlueDowns – firmly has his eyes set on takingthe African trophy.

Brandon (28) from Vernon Street, Tusca-ny Glen in Blue Downs, won the nationalRedBull BCOne competition held in Johan-nesburg recently and will be part of theSouth African squad who will be represen-ting the country in the continental round ofthe competition.

The African championships take place inSeptember and will be held in Tunisia.

B-Boys from across the African continentas well as the Middle East will be descen-ding on the city to compete for the grandpri-ze before taking part in the internationalround.

Coming into the competition, Brandonsaid he took a chance following an injuryto his ankle while competing in the regio-nals in Cape Town.

“I injured my ankle in the second battlein round two.

“I was expecting to leave the battle but fi-nished it. I had somuchpain,” he explained.

Brandon was fortunate enough to receivea wild card which saw him go through tothe nationals where he went head to headagainst South Africa’s greatest B-Boys inJohannesburg on Monday 27 April in theRed Bull BC One SA Finals.

“I went to Johannesburg not being physi-cally prepared, but mentally I was in it.

“I knowwhat I amcapable of and didwhatI had to do.

“The most important thing I always tellmyself, is to have fun,” he said.

Brandon conquered his first round.“I knew then that I was on a level to win

the competition.”

World class performersDoingwhat he does best for the past 15 ye-

ars or so, Brandon managed to go throughto the final round of the competition wherehe competed against Silent Sam – a respec-ted and worthy opponent, according toBrandon.

To win, he says, one needed to be on topform.

“You need to be precise and avoidmaking

mistakes as far as possible. Youneed to keepit clean.

“There is a story you tell when you dance.Themusic tells youhow tomove,” he explai-ned.

Despite his confidence and positivemind-set, he encountered some tough competiti-on.

“Everybody was good on the day. Mostguys there trained well,” he added.

Brandon said his main aim during thecompetitionwas to prove a point: that despi-te getting older, he still has what it takes todemand respect from the B-Boy fraternity.

“To compete on that level is not alwayspossible but if I am going to lose a competiti-on, I want to go out with a bang,” he said.

Brandon, who started break-dancing athigh school, said he was inspired by manylocal hip hop greats including Black Noise,Prophets of the City and Brasse vannieKaap – artistswithwhomhehad the privile-ge to work with.

“These guys made it possible for us to bewhere we are today.

“Being involved with them definitely hel-ped me with my performance. It taught me

stage presence and how to interact withcrowds, breathing techniques and so on,”hesaid.

In preparation for the competition in Sep-tember, Brandon is planning to work hardand to give it everything he has got in orderto be crowned African champion.

“There is still a lot of time before the com-petition, but time goes by so quickly. NowI am just taking it easy with the injury.

Fully committed, Brandon said break-dancing was his career.

Skaars ’n week nadat daar by ’n laer-skool in Wesbank ingebreek is, hetbooswigte weer daar toegeslaan.

R52 000, sê Sauer.’n Deur by die skool is verlede Dinsdag-

Sauer beaam dit.“As onderwyser voel ’n mens eintlik sleg.

Dis jou persoonlike dokumente en die op-voeder se werkmateriaal,” vertel hy.Tydens diemees onlangse voorval is daar

hoofsaaklik elektriese kabels gesteel.

Reading glasses on and books out.Yes, soon several bookworms will be ta-

king part in a somewhat unique competiti-on – one that does not require or demandblood, sweat and tears.

Instead, reading skills will count in com-petitors’ favour as 73 libraries from acrossthe city take part in the City of Cape Town’sseventh annual reading competition.

The competition is hostedby theCity’s Li-brary and Information Services (LIS) de-partment and thousands of learners will beparticipating in the event.

Preliminary rounds have already startedand the competition will run until August, said Belinda Walker, City mayco memberfor community services and special pro-jects.

The competition was originally develo-ped and implemented in one library, butnow boasts participants from 73 librariesacross the city. This number increases eachyear.

The winners from the library rounds ad-vance to the district rounds, then on to thefinals. The library rounds are set to end inAugust, with the final scheduled for Sep-tember at the Athlone Civic Centre.

Participating schools hold eliminationrounds where grade seven learners compe-te to qualify for the district reading compe-titions. Last year more than 1000 learners

from 275 schools participated, said Walker.Only 18 learners will make it to the final

round of the competion.Learners are competing in each of the

three official languages in the Western Ca-pe.

“The competition addresses reading chal-lenges and helps to build relationships bet-ween local libraries and schools,” said Wal-ker.

“We are committed to developing readingskills and encouraging a reading cultureamong our children. Literacy is a gatewayto opportunity so competitions like this al-lowus to trulymakeprogress possible, toge-ther with our young residents.”

She said reading also develop the mindand imagination.

“Reading helps children to improve lan-guage and listening skills. It improved flu-ency, which helps learners become confi-dent speakerswho are able to express them-selves confidently and coherently.

“It also strengthens their ability to com-prehend information and concepts. Impro-ved reading abilities can lead tomarked im-provements in a child’s performance inother subjects as they are able to read andunderstand instructions,” Walker added.

Leaners interested in participating mustapproach their schools. Schools can contacttheir local libraries for more details.

Kids taught importance of safety

A traffic official from the City of Cape Town and Danie Kat demonstrated the safety rules whencrossing busy roads to young children. The event formed part of the World Safety Day which washeld at the Beverly Park Primary School and Blue Downs Educare. The programme is run by theTotal Service Station in Beverly Park, Eerste River.

Young children in Eerste River weretaught the importance of safety andgiven first-hand experience of how

emergency personnel operate during a cri-sis.

The safety programme conducted at twoEerste River learning institutions formedpart of World Safety Day, an initiative runby Nasheefa Gamieldien, a local businesswoman and owner of the Total Service Sta-tion in Beverly Park.

The safety day was held on Tuesday, 28April.

Nasheefa told TygerBurger she, togetherwith some staff members, identified twoschools in the area and decided to initiatethe event.

Beverly Park Primary was one of theschools chosen. Here members of the City ofCape Town’s fire and rescue service taughtkids how they work when on duty and whatthey need to know about being safe.

About 500 foundation phase learners at-tended the safety awareness programmewhere rescue personnel conducted talks anddemonstrated what they do.

“Adam Damons and his firefighting teamconducted a presentation and demonstra-tion around firefighting and the dangers offire,” Nasheefa said.

Learners at the Blue Downs Educare were

also visited the same day.Heremembers of theCity’s traffic services

demonstrated their role when on duty.“Road safety programmeswere held at the

crèche and Danie Kat, a traffic departmentroad safetymascot, helped to educate anden-

tertain the children on road safety,”Nashee-fa added.

About 80 children under the age of six at-tended the event. She said both principalswere handed first-aid kits.

“These projects are the first of many that

will be running at schools within the EersteRiver community,” Nasheefa said.

She said all major role players at theevent, including teachers and principals, met at the service station afterwards wherethey were treated to a well-deserved lunch.

Straatnaam help vrou met rolstoelRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

VoorvalTygerBurger, sowel as vele ander media-

April by haar huis afgelewer.

Sy was egter verlede week verheug oor

vir my gedoen het.

For sevenmonths he spent his lifeas a stray. Eating whatever hecould, scavenging and fighting

off other dogs. Not knowing the road back home,

life took its toll on Leo, the Germanshepherd who went missing from hisKuils River home in July 2014.Now, despite suffering malnutri-

tion, being under-weight and withbad skinand teeth, ownersKevinHec-tor and his son Jonathan are happyto have their four-legged friend backat home.Leo, described as a friendly dog by

his owners, was believed to have leftthe house through a back door thatwas left open.“The door can lock, but if you donot

lock it, Leo is clever enough topull thehandle down and go outside,” Kevinsaid.

Hope kept aliveA lengthy search ensued but Kevin

said the family never gave up.“Wehadposters putup everywhere.“We never gave up, we looked ev-

erywhere. We went to the SPCA andadvertised on their website. We alsoadvertised on Pet Finders’ website.Where ever we drove we kept on look-ing,” he explained.Kevin said Leo was especially a part of his

son’s Jonathan’s life. Both father and sonsaid it was a sad day when their pet wentmissing. “We were worried about him,” Jo-nathan said.“The guys at the SPCA say they give dogs

about three months to live on the streets be-fore it dies,” said Kevin.“I suspect somebody probably got hold of

Leo and kept him locked-up and that he es-

caped again.”The family was contacted by the Tyger-

berg Animal Hospital a month ago with thenews of their dog possibly still being alive– more than half a year after disappearing.“You always expect and hope for the best.

However, we went through a few of thesecalls and were told to come and have a look.It would then turn out it was not Leo, butwe kept hoping,” Kevin said. This time however, it was not the case.

Jonathan, who accompaniedhis fa-ther, said: “At first you feel, is this re-al? You do not know if is it him, youhave to test the animal first.”Jonathan started playing with a

ball – a toy Leo loves, The dog accord-ing to the animal hospital and own-ers responded positively.“He chased it,” Jonathan said.Apart from his love for balls, the

dog was also recognised by a scar onhis body from a previous operation.Leo, an obviously loved member of

the Hector family, was taken home, but the road to his recovery wassomething that would take sometime.“Hewas in a bad state, he lost some

of his teeth on the side,” Kevin said.A veterinary surgeon told the fami-

ly this is normally a sign of despera-tion when animals are hungry andwilling to eat anything they can find. The family suspect Leo chew onstones which caused damage to histeeth.

Rehabilitation“When we got him back we strug-

gled for the first two weeks. Therewas food aggression; we suspect hewas used to fighting for food, but wegot him to the point where he nowwaits and sits down for his food.”Kevin added that it takes the dog

about six months to get over the trauma.“But he is doing well,” Kevin said.Since being back home Leo has gained

some significant weight.“But to build muscle again will obviously

take a while.”Asked about how it felt to have his beloved

his dog back after hewasmissing for so long,Jonathan replied. “Yoh! I feel happy to havehim back. Now we just have to get him backinto shape.”

Dog found seven months later

Leo, the sixyearold German Shepherd who went missing lastyear and spent seven months on his own. Kuils River residentand Leo’s owner, Kevin Hector and his son Jonathan, toldTygerBurger they are delighted to have him back with thefamily. PHOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

Lekker by die . . . watersproeier! Readers can buy up to 12 months worthof prepaid electricity in advance to takethe sting out of the proposed hike in costs.

The annual electricity increase for mu-nicipalities, including the City of CapeTown, comes into effect on Wednesday 1July.

Much like filling up before a major fuelprice increase, a good way to counter thehike is to simply stock up, according toPrepaid24, in a newsletter to their clients.

“Unlike your fuel tank, there is no limitto the amount by which your electricitymeter can be stocked up at the old price,”said Ben Lindeque of Prepaid24.

He suggests that consumers be aware of

their respective municipalities’ tariffstructuring.

The annual increase for municipalityusers is set to be between 8% and 14,25%and will take effect at midnight on 30 June2015.

The recent tariff increase in April onlyaffected users who were supplied directlyby Eskom.

The July increase will however apply toall those users who are supplied with elec-tricity through their municipalities.

An added winter tariff might also be ap-plicable.

“We always recommend that consu-mers contact their municipality directlyto confirm the period during which themunicipalities’ respective winter tariffswill apply,” Lindeque added.
