But, bad service from an ambulance crew could have caused his death. At about 02:00 on the morning of Wednes- day 12 June mom-to-be, Soraya Davids from Leiden, started having contractions and re- alised that she was about to give birth. With no transport available dad-to-be, Matt Damon, decided that they would have to walk to the Day Hospital. Damon explained that while they were walking they realised that the baby was not going to wait for them to get there. “We were just near the primary school when Soraya said that the baby was com- ing,” he explained. “I had to just leave here there in the cold and started running to the hospital for help.” Getting to the hospital did not save the day because although there was an ambulance there no help was forthcoming. “I tried telling them about the emergency that was happening on the street, but they were not interested, they told me that I must “phone” the emergency number. “That’s when I ran to the police station and luckily there was some help on hand,” he said. At the police station Detective Constables Hajiera Nolton and Andy Maloy were about to leave the station for another incident when they spotted Damon running towards them waving his hands. “At first we thought that he was being chased,” says Nolton. “When he explained the situation we knew that the life of this baby was a first pri- ority, and when we got there the baby was already on its way out, but we did the best that we could with the after-birth proce- dures. “Luckily I have had some experience in this regard and in the past have already de- livered some babies out in the field.” After cleaning mother and infant, the de- tectives secured their safety and well-being before transporting them to the safety of the medical practitioners at the Delft Day Hospi- tal. This was the first time that Maloy was present at a birth out in the field, but he was very happy to have been part of the experi- ence. Brigadier Hendrik Jansen (Delft station commander) praised the two for going be- yond the call of duty and he was impressed with the way they dealt with the trauma. At the time of going to press the Emergen- cy Medical Services were investigating the response from the ambulance staff. Police at Delft collected some baby goods for the baby, nicknamed “Andy” , for Andy Maloy, right, who was on hand to help him come into this world. The Booysen brothers are on the ball when it comes togiving back to youth in the community.David andMario are both defenders playing profession-

ally for Maritzburg United. They started their soccer atBluegum United, and have never forgotten their roots inthe area.During their break in games they were back home for

what they love to do, motivate youngsters in the area toachieve their positive potential in life. They visited Protea and Rosewood primary schools

where they gave excited learners a motivational speechabout staying positive to achieve positive dreams in theirlives.“Its important for us to be seen as positive role models

that can come from disadvantaged circumstances,” saysDavid.“We are proud to tell them about our achievements, but

we point out that getting to this point takes hard work.“For us it is important that they don’t look at all the

negative influences around them, they must not take theeasy route and go into a life of crime and drugs.”Mario also pointed out that the children must also look

at their education to reach their dreams.“Its not just about sport where you must apply your-

self,” he said.“It starts with your education. Not all children can be

good at sport, but every child has the opportunity to besomething special through education.“We emphasise that if you practise what you learn, just

as hard as we practise our sport then you can become any-thing that you want in this life.”

A campaign to keep communities clean andtidy is gaining momentum.

TheOwnLove ImproveYourStreet initia-tive ismaking a difference as residents real-ise that they can take ownership of their en-vironment and create the neat, clean andflourishing neighbourhood they want tolive in.

As joint partners, the residents of Sub-council 4 play a significant role togetherwith the city and the business sector inbuilding social capital.

In Elsies River The Riverton Estate Resi-dents’ Association, under the leadership ofSteve Ross, embarked on an audit of vacantplots and buildings that give the suburb abad name.

They reported properties that were beingused for illegal dumping and reported themto the Environmental Health Departmentwho issued warning letters to the owners ofthese properties.

In response. one property owner haserected a fence around the property to pre-vent illegal dumping and to safeguard thebuilding.

Another property owner has acknowl-edged the compliance notice and is willingto co-operate.

He is currently getting quotes to rectifythe deficiencies and in themeantime he haspromised to start cutting the vegetationhimself.

In three other instances the compliancenotices were ignored and a contractor is be-ing appointed to clean up the plots. Thecosts will be added to the municipal ac-counts.

This organisation has also started a land-scaping project at a vacant plot when a fewvolunteers started clearing and levellingground and the rest of the community

joined in by donating PVC sheeting, plants, stone chips and rocks.

Workers were also supplied with drinksand food as they completed the task of beau-tifying a part of Riverton.

In future the association is planning tohave at least four community gardens in thearea.

In Uitsig, the community has also startedto get into the project and already some resi-dents have been acknowledged for their ef-forts in their gardens.

Proportional representative councillorfor the area, Ronel Viljoen said that this ar-ea has a high incidence of teen pregnancies, gang activities, drugs, crime and other so-cial problems associated with poverty.

“Amidst all this there are still people who

have shown that they have pride in theirsurroundings by maintaining their proper-ty and creating beautiful gardens.

“We found two homes in Uitsig Avenueand hope that honouring these residentswill encourage others to make the same ef-fort to beautify their gardens and yards,”she said.

This initiative is also an opportunity forall residents to find those places that makea difference and let the council know aboutit.

Pictures can be taken on cellphones andcameras, uploaded at your nearest libraryonSmartCape computers and sent to the ad-dress below.V Photos can be sent to Cindylee.daries@capetown.gov.za, entries close on Friday 20 September.

Anumber of FreeCall lines have been in-stalled across the city to bringmunicipalservices closer to residents, no matterwhere they live.

Most importantly, during the winterseason, these lines alsomake it easier forcommunities to contact the City of CapeTown to report any faults.

The city has installed 67 FreeCall linesin outlying areas and disadvantagedcommunities. A further 20 lines are setto be connected by the end of July.

Many informal settlements, includingsome where there is hardly any telecom-munications infrastructure, will benefitfrom these new lines.

“We are extending the network ofFreeCall telephones to areas where lowvolumes of service complaints and re-quests are currently being registered be-cause of a lack of landlines or cellphoneairtime on the part of the residents,”says the city’s mayoral committee mem-ber for corporate services,DemetriQual-ly.

The FreeCall lines can be used to con-tact the city for various enquiries andservice requests suchas illegal dumping, etc.V Call the City’s helpline centre on 0860 103 089for flooding or SMS (maximum 160 characters)to 31220 for more information.

sation is to provide financial sup-port and to assist needy and de-serving students,” explainedMoulana Sarfaraaz Hamza, ad-ministrator for the organisationin the Western Cape. “We recog-nise that education plays an im-portant role in determining la-bour market prospects and as anorganisation we have made a con-certed effort to be responsive tothe dire needs within communi-ties.” Hamza added that up to R3million has been earmarked anddisbursed for education and em-powerment programmes in theWestern Cape with bursary stu-dents spread across all leadingtertiary institutions country-

wide. This fund is the single larg-est registered public-benefit or-ganisation of its kind in South Af-rica. Last year more than 500students benefited from thebursa-ry programme and it is envisagedthat the number is set to grow.“The projects and programmes

Youth from Delft led the way at FreedomPark in Pretoria this weekend in celebra-tion of Youth Day.There was lots of excitement at Delft

SAPS when their Cadet Drill team boardeda bus to Pretoria in acceptance of a specialinvitation to a “youth dialogue againstdrugs” which took place last Saturday.Chief Executive of Freedom Park, Fana

Jiyane, said that this event was in responseto the call by President Jacob Zuma for thenation to unite against drug abuse. The group fromDelft joined young people

from Eldorado Park and Kliptown in Gau-teng to engage in a facilitated dialogue toshare experiences on fighting the scourgeof drug abuse and building a better futurefor themselves.Jiyane points out that when they hosted

Youth Day activities in Delft last year, hewas encouraged by the success of a commu-nity initiative involving the police, educa-tion authorities and parents who were ea-ger to stamp out drug abuse among young-sters through a cadet training scheme.“This resulted in disciplined behaviour

at home, improved grades at school andgreater social cohesion in the community,”he said.“While youth are leading the way in Delft

by breaking free from the drug-infested life-styles in which their parents are impris-oned, in Gauteng youth are entrappingthemselves in drugs against the wishes oftheir parents.“We are hoping that the youth dialogue

between these two groups would help themshare perspectives about how to fight theircommon enemy.”He also pointed out how this related to the

struggle of youth that began in 1976.“The youth of 1976 whom we honour in

this youthmonthmade sacrifices so that theyouth of today can enjoy the fruits of free-dom.“Today’s youth, often called “born frees”,

who will likely be voting for the first timenext year are challenged by the evil scourgeof drugs which threatens their freedom.“It is important that these young people

are given platforms to talk about how theycan engage in this new struggle againstthese social ills,” he said. The event on Saturday was hosted under

the theme “Working together for youth de-velopment and a drug-free South Africa”and attendees were addressed by a repre-sentative of the SAPS as well as the chair-person of the Delft Community Forum, Reg-gie Maart. They also engaged in discussion and de-

bate with emphasis on crime and drugabuse among youth.

Bishop Lavis Drill Cadets are on a missionto get more boys to march with them.

On Saturday they will be hosting a con-cert featuring all the members at the hallof Bishop Lavis High School and they’re in-viting the community to experience the funthat the children have as part of this organi-sation.

Joy Crow, secretary of the cadets, pointedout that this show was a repeat of one thatthey held in May, but with very little sup-port from the community.

“We are on a mission to show childrenin the area that they can be part of an activi-ty in their community that can have a posi-tive influence on their lives,” she said.

“People in the community are alwayscomplaining about the crime and gangster-ism in the area, but when it comes to posi-tive initiatives like this they don’t supportit,” she said.

“Our activities are not just about drill-ing, its about learning valuable life skillslike teamwork, achieving goals, but moreimportantly how they relate to each otheras friends in a positive way.”

She added that the life skills activitieswere also a reason why they wanted moreboys to join them.

“We want parents to send their boys tojoin us because from an early age they mustbe taught how to respect girls, how to re-spect themselves, and be a part of some-thing positive in their community.”

The concert will be held in the NGChurch hall on the c/o Lavis Drive and Ko-ppiesdam Road, Opposite Lavis Drive Pri-mary School starting at 16:00, until 19:00,and it will be officially opened by Ministerfor Safety and Security Dan Plato.

Tickets are R20, and will be available atthe door.V More information about the cadets and bookingfor the concert from Joy Crow on 082 634 8552.

Strict training pays off

Neill Bruce

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Gambate in Japanese translates to per-severance – something that HenryBosman and Neill Bruce learned all

too well in their three-month tenure in To-kyo.

Now, back home in their beloved coun-try, the Bellville boys are reflecting on aonce-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Let me tell you, it was tough. We wereunder no illusion that it would be a walkin the park, but boy were we in for a sur-prise.

“We were based at the Honbu dojo whichis the international headquarters for Ky-okushin-kan karate. Our day would startwith the cleaning of the dojo and after thatwe would have intensive training.

Rice“Some days we trained up to seven hours.

On a another note, the Japanese eat ricemorning noon and night and surprisinglynot as many fish as you would think. It’squite expensive over there,” said Henry.

Neill reflects on the many intensive ses-sions they had. “You don’t ever fear thatyou are in pain. On Tuesdays we had fight-ing classes with their u-65kg, u-70kg and u-80kg champions.”

“Those guys are at another level of tough, sometimes I would take kicks to the leg sothat I can barely stand on it, but somehowyou pull through and only check on yourinjuries after the fight.”

“Looking back on it, it made me and Hen-ry so much more tough, not only mentally, but physically as well. We were also in-structed to give some classes to six to 13-year-olds. That was fun and it helped uswith our own technique.

“As you stand in front of the class teach-ing them the various techniques, you haveto constantly check them and yourself to

make sure you are doing things correctly.”

BetterSince their return, their balance, under-

standing of this ancient practice and stami-na have improved dramatically.

They have also revised their trainingschedule to keep the intensity high.

“These boys really surprised me. Justlooking at them made me realise that these

are not the same boys that I sent to Japanthree months ago.”

“They are physically, mentally and tech-nically better. I’m excited to see them per-form in upcoming tournaments,” said Shi-hanHennieBosmanof theWelgemoeddojo.

Come August, when they will be compet-ing in the Len Barnes Memorial Tourna-ment in Durban, they are sure to be moreprepared for the challenge.

SAREL BURGER

LIAM MOSES

Engen Santos FC will face two season-defining moments this week whenthey take on Mpumalanga Black Aces

and Chippa United in the Premier SoccerLeague (PSL) promotion/relegation play-offs.

The People’s Team did well to fight theirway back into contention for promotion af-ter a disastrous start in the National FirstDivision (NFD).

But their hard work could all be in vainif they fail to beat Aces and Chippa in thetwo home games on Thursday 20 and Sun-day 23 June.

Head coach Ian Palmer admits bothmatches will be crucial, but says a loss willnot be the death of his side’s promotionhopes.

Setback“I don’t think this game is do or die, be-

causewestill have toplayChippa soonafterthat. If we lose it won’t be good and it willbe huge setback,” he says.

“But we are thinking about that. We aregoing full-out to get one over Aces and putus in the driving seat. Aces are in the driv-ing seat, because they are the only teamwithawin.Theplaying fieldwill be levelled

as we will be at home.”Santos had an undesirable start to the

play-offs last month when their first match, away to Chippa, finished in a goal-lessdraw.

Chippa went on to lose 1-0 to Aces in thesecond play-off match.

The Mpumalanga side now top the stand-ings ahead of their clash against Santos, who have not had much success against Ac-es this season.

But Palmer will hope recent form andpast results are not an indicator of whatThursday’s result will be.

The People’s Team drew 0-0 against Acesin their last encounter in Mpumalanga inApril, while Aces beat Santos 1-0 at AthloneStadium in the season opener last October.

Palmer says the fixtures have not beenkind to his side, but he is confident histroops will recover before their Cape derbyagainst Philippi’s Chippa.

“Chippa also play us and then have to goto Aces three days later. It’s about howquickly you recover.”

Santos’ fixture against Aces will kick-offat Cape Town Stadium at 19:30 on Thursday20 June. Chippa United will host Aces onWednesday 26 June and the final fixture ofthe play-offs will see Santos travel to Mpu-malanga to face Aces on Saturday 29 June.
