The witness to testify in an attemptedmurder case, targeted by a mob insidecourt before his testimony is heard, is

the kind of screenplay Hollywood actionblockbusters are made of.But inCapeTown’s northern suburbs this

reality played itself out in the early after-noon of Thursday 22 August. With Parow as location, its Regional

Court as the backdropandalleged criminalson a mission to act out their cruel inten-tions, the stage was set for the kind of law-lessness that assured prosecutors and courtpersonnel a bloody lunchtime. The anarchy broke loose when a gang of

knife wielding men stabbed Clint Booysen,a 21-year-old witness in the trial of ThurloMichaels. The case of Michaels, who stands accused

of attempted murder, was postponed on theday, because the magistrate called in sick.Shortly after the postponement, Booysen

was attacked as he was coming down thestairs inside the court building where hewas due to testify.

Attacked“There was blood everywhere, these

criminals are not even scared of security,”said one of the staff who did not want to benamed. He saw how Booysen was attackedon the stairs inside the court. How his assailants managed to bypass se-

curity at the court entrance with knives, se-curity personnel at the court were unableto explain.“We searched them when they came in

and we did not find any knives. But theseguys are ex-convicts. They are professional(criminals),” one of the security guards toldTygerBurger. One court staff recalled how afraid they

were when police officers rushed into theiroffices with a warning that some of the menlinked to the attack were outside the courtand probably armed with guns. “I wantedto hide myself away,” he said.As fear consumed those inside the court

at the time of the incident those outsidewere soaking up the commotion and watch-ing the spectacle from afar.

DramaOne such bystander was Firoz Izmail, a

car sales representative, who works oppo-site the court and photographed the scenefrom his office:“We’ve become immune to this kind of

drama, since it happens frequently. In fact,as we were watching police trying to defusethe situation andmaking arrests on the one

side of our building another criminal wasbusy stealing the strips off our sliding dooron the other side.“Commotion and criminality in Parow is

so rampant that little shocks us any more,”he concluded.Parow police spokesperson, Lt KevinWil-

liams, confirmed Booysen’s stabbing andthat he is one of the witnesses in theMichaels case.Booysen was whisked off to Tygerberg

Hospital shortly after the incident and wasdischarged on the same day. The hospitaldid notwant to release any further detail re-garding his condition. “The patient does notwant tobe interviewed, photographed, or di-vulge any information regarding his condi-tion,” said Tygerberg Hospital spokesper-son, Rozaun Botes.

Blood floods court corridors

Curious residents gathered outside the Parow Regional Court minutes after a criminal showdownled to the stabbing of a witness in an attempted murder case.

The victorious WP Durbell hockey team. Backfrom left are Ruan van der Westhuizen, WadeWhitear, Braydon Smits, Vian Smit, KeenanOpperman, Erik van Graan and Zaskia Kuun(manager). Middle: Rejuan Tobin, JoshuaPretorius, Jacques le Roux, Michael George, BaloDlikilili, Karlo Azevedo and Mikhail Abrahams.Front: Charl Barkhuizen (goalkeeper).

aangespreek.

So was dit dan ook die rugbyafslui-

My jare langs my seuns serugbywedstryde was van die beste.

Gr7s gather for competitionGARY VAN DYK

Readers were gathering in Belhar last weekwhen District 4 of the city’s Library and In-formation Services hosted their annualreading competition at the Belhar CivicCentre.Grade 7 learners from various primary

schools represented 15 libraries in this dis-trict and the competition was tough as thereaders vied for the top prizes in the Eng-lish, Afrikaans and Xhosa categories. The history of the competition was the

brainchild of the Valhalla Park library staffback in 2003 to improve reading skills, helpcreate a literate society and an interest inreading. It targetedGrade 7s because therewas the

feeling at the time that once the grade sev-ens leave primary school they avoided thelibrary and that there was a need to dosomething to get them involved in someform of reading activity to lure them to thelibrary.

The first competition was held way backin 2003 at Valhalla Park library where thefive local primary schools were the onlyparticipants. It was then presented annually in the pu-

blic library week as part of their marketingand promotions reading campaign, butwhen the library celebrated their 10th anni-versary they hosted a competitionwhere allthe District 4 libraries were invited and in-troduced to the competition. The next year 2008 Delft and Delft South

libraries challenged Valhalla Park libraryto the first inter-library reading competitiwhich Valhalla Park library won.Since then it has grown into amajor event

on the library services calendar with lots ofexcitement among learners.Libraries taking part in the competition

are: Athlone, Belhar, Bishop Lavis, Bonte-heuwel, Bridgetown, Crossroads, Delft,Delft South, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Hei-develd, Hanover Park,Manenberg, Rylandsand Valhalla Park.

Great enthusiasm for libraryBelvue Primary school is truly striving tolive up to its motto, knowledge is light, withthe opening of a new library at the school.

The school opened its doors to a roaringcrowd of enthusiastic and appreciativelearners and educators on Tuesday 20 Au-gust, as they officially launched the new fa-cility.

Situated next to the school’s Reading Ad-venture Room (RAR), the library is another“adventure” itself. RAR is a long-termproject, aimed at improving literacy levelsamong primary school learners.

The project is sponsored by CoronationFund Managers and the special readingroom at Belvue Primary was designed andimplemented by Living Through Learning(LTL) a registered NPO/PBO in the educa-tion sector.

This organisation was established in Jan-uary 2012 and is situated in Wynberg withthe mission to ensure that youth are ableto read and write successfully, that properbasics are trained and instilled at Grade 1or foundation level to educators, parents

and learners and to provide additional as-sistance in technical subjects to learners.

LTL provided the games, books, manualsand other resources for the reading room atthe school.

This approach enables young children tolearn how to read and write step-by-step andin a manner that is also enjoyable for them.

In October, school libraries all over thecountry and the world will be celebratingInternational School Library Month underthe theme; “School Libraries: Doorways toLife” where school libraries get an opportu-nity to showcase what libraries have doneand can do for the learners.

The excitement of finally having a big, beautifully decorated and painted library atBelvue was palpable as hundreds of eagerlearners packed the school grounds eager toshare what they had prepared for on thisspecial day.V Six to 10 computers would be really appreciatedand anyone who has books to donate can contactthe school directly on 021 952 5809 or email ad[email protected].

The mid-point assessment of the city’shome composting study reflects phenome-nal results showing 12,94 tons of organicwaste being diverted from landfill sites infour months. The City of Cape Town’s Home Compost-

ing Study, which began inMarch this year, has now passed its mid-point. So far, a totalof 45 449 litres (12,94 tons) of organic gardenand kitchen waste has been diverted fromlandfill sites. The impressive results of the study were

achieved by 172 regularly participatinghouseholds located across four suburbs. These are Edgemead, Heathfield, Scotts-ville and Bongweni.“The study came about as a result of the

overuse of the city’s landfill sites for gardenand organic waste which can be compostedand re-used. At present, 95 000 tons ofhousehold garden and organic waste and80 000 tons of household kitchenwaste is di-rected to the city’s landfill sites each year,”said the city’s Ernest Sonnenberg.“On average, a household generates ap-

proximately 11 kg of garden and organicwaste and 10 kg of organic kitchen wasteper month.“We are urging residents to get involved

in efforts to reduce waste generation andtry home composting. Every small effortwill help us to reduce damage to our envi-ronment,” said Sonnenberg.

Cape Town’s City Parks Departmentis keeping a close watch on the risinggroundwater table in its cemeteries. The rising groundwater levels are

exacerbated during periods of severestorms or excessively rainy weather– even if it is just for a day or two, amedia release from the City of CapeTown reads.Plans are in place to minimise the

effects of this annual rainy season inthe Western Cape. This may includefamilies needing to sign an accept-ance of limited depth form for burialin their private grave – to allow forthe burial in a slightly shallowergrave. The City Parks Department has al-

so recently provided an above-ground burial system, the MaitlandMausoleum.Furthermore, the new Wal-

lacedene Cemetery (near Kraaifon-tein) is now open for burials andWel-moed Cemetery (in Eerste River) hasbeen extended, with extensive cut-offdrains designed to redirect waterpast the cemetery and to reduce thelikelihood of a high water table re-stricting burial space.Due to religious and cultural pref-

erences, 60 % of Capetonians chooseburial rather than cremation. The highwater table, however, has

an impact on the total number of bur-ials that can take place at any giventime. In shallow, private graves, the lim-

ited depth precludes a second burialon top of the originally buried coffin. The cemetery booking offices are

receiving weekly updates from ceme-tery supervisors on the number ofgraves suitable for burials underthese specific conditions.Under adverse conditions, the

booking officer may suggest thatthere are limited numbers of gravesavailable for Saturday burials.V Enquiries can be directed to the followingbooking offices: Northern District: 021 5288108/09; Southern District: 021 7108235/8325; Central District: 021 4440904/11 or Eastern District: 021 9001676/1902.

The final of the Engen Knockout Chal-lenge went down to the wire as penal-ties were needed to separate Ajax Cape

Town and ASD Academy on Sunday. The final was the culmination of months

of qualifying matches and over 40 matchesat the weekend, and pitted together two ofthe title favourites.People’s Post is the tournament’s print me-

dia sponsor. The Urban Warriors breezed through the

group stages, quarter-finals and semis witha perfect record as expected, scoring 13 goalsand conceding just one.

AttackASD had a less a comfortable route to the

final, drawing against United FC in thegroup stage and scraping past Bishop Lavison penalties in the semis.

Buoyed by their success in the earlierrounds, Ajax needed no time to settle in thefinal and were in all-out attacking mode assoon as the first whistle sounded.

The defending champions won the mid-field battle and imposed their style of playon the game to take full control and keepASD pinned in their own half.

Ajax regularly got in behind the opposi-tion defence, but couldn’t come up with anaccurate final ball to take the lead.

The second half started as the first had, with Ajax pushing for a breakthrough andASD hesitant to commit numbers to attack.

Though the Urban Warriors continued tolook dangerous, they seldom threatened andfound the opposition keeper up to the taskwhen tested from long range.

PenaltiesNeither team found a goal in the remain-

ing minutes, and, in the end, Ajax won 4-3on penalties, after the match ended in a goal-less draw after regular time, to take their 6thtitle in the 10th instalment of the Challenge.

Meanwhile, tournament hosts Santos hada tournament to forget. The People’s Teamfinished sixth overall, after finishing secondin 2012.

Pinelands club Old Mutual Academy fin-ished fifth, Grassy Park’s Crusaders endedseventh and Mitchells Plain side KenparkUnited were eighth. Hanover Park FC fin-ished ninth and Green Point Salesians fin-ished 10th overall.V To view galleries of all the Engen Knockout Challenge action, visit www.peoplespost.co.za.
