Die skenkings het begin met die StadKaapstad, wat boumateriaal beskikbaar ge-stel het sodat die gesinne nuwe huise konbou. Alle huise is reeds voltooi.Toni Tresadern van die Thandanani, ’n

nie-regeringsorganisasie wat haar oor diegemeenskap ontferm, sê die ondersteuningwat die slagoffers ontvang het, is oorweldi-gend. “Van die bekendste winkelgroepe indie land, kerke, skole en gewone mense watdie berig oor die brand in die koerant gesien

het, het daarop reageer en besluit om die ge-meenskap te help,” sê ’n dankbare Toni.Sy sê die mees basiese goed soos onderkle-

re het ’n uitdaging geblyk tewees,maarwel-doeners het bo verwagting reageer. “TeenMaandaghet die kinders al skoolklere gehaden daar was al beloftes van beddens. Ek hetdaremnouweer geld gekry sodat ek beddenskan gaan koop. Dit lyk nie of iemand hierdiewinter op die vloer gaan slaap nie.”

Things are not always what they seem.Last week two people were hijacked,kidnapped, robbed and then released,

and this week they are in court on a chargeof man stealing (a charge similar to kidnap-ping) and aggravated robbery.Milnerton police spokesperson WarrantOfficer Daphne O’Reilly said on on Wednes-day last week at about 11:00 a case of hijac-king was reported to the Milnerton police.O’Reilly said the 26-year-old female victimfrom Hanover Park was allegedly drivingwith her colleague onCentury Boulevard to-

wards Canal Walk to deposit company mo-ney.They stopped at a pedestrian crossingwhen a man suddenly darted towards them,pointing a firearm.He forced himself into the back of vehicleand told her to drive towards VanguardDrive.She said the man ordered them to stop,took the money they had, threatened themand then got out of the vehicle.The unharmed victim and colleague thenreported the incident.That is where the story would have endedwere it not for sterling work by Milnertondetectives.

“Excellent investigationwork” found thatthe victimandher husband orchestrated thewhole incident and a third partywas also in-volved.According to O’Reilly the detectives stu-died CCTV footage which showed the “rob-ber” got out of a black BMW near Bosmans-dam Road. One of the occupants of the BMWwas the “victim’s” husband.The woman’s female colleague was appa-rently completely unaware of the whole“act”.O’Reilly said the suspect and her 31-year-old husband were arrested on Thursday lastweek and appeared in the Cape TownMagis-trate’s Court on Monday.

skreeuend in die teenoorgestelde rigting ge-hardloop,” sê Sharon.Volgens Sharon het die ander meisie dievalhelm van die aanvaller in die hande ge-kry en hom daarmee getakel. “Die meisiesse gille het gemaak dat baie mense wat indie straatwoon, uit hul huise gehardloophetom die aanvaller te probeer vang. Toe diebooswig sien hoeveel mense uitkom, het hyweggejaag. Ons het nog agter hom aange-hardloop, maar kon hom nie vang nie,” ver-tel Sharon. Sy sê dit was vir haar ’n riem on-

Die Doyles se dogter, Kim, het in 2009 aan’n seldsame siekte gesterf. “Syhet altyd gesêons moet seker maak dat arm kinders skoe-ne aan hul voete kry. Haar laaste inskry-wing op Facebook was ‘Happy, Happy, Hap-py’ en daarom het ons met die Happy, Hap-py, Happy Feet-projek begin.Met die projekgee ons skoene aan kinders in die plakkers-kampe wat nog nooit hul eie skoene besithet nie,” sê John.

Happy, Happy, Happy Feet was van dieeerste organisasieswat diéweek ingespringhet om die brandslagoffers van die Rich-mondpark-nedersetting naby Richwood tehelp. Vier gesinne het alles in ’n brand ver-loor en Happy, Happy, Happy Feet het skoe-ne gegee aan die kinders wat deur die brandgeraak is.

“Hoewel ons steeds rou oor die heengaanvanonsgeliefdedogter, bringdie feit dat onsglimlagte opdie gesigvankinders sit, bietjie

vertroosting. Ons gee ook nie net die skoenenie, maar ons help die kinders met emosio-nele en geestelike berading. Ons hoop nethulle sal dit eendag onthou en ook goed aanander doen,” sê John, wat oorspronklik vanEngeland kom. John sê dit is ’n wonderlike

gevoel wanneer ’n kind sy of haar eerstepaar nuwe skoene kry.

“Baie keer het kinders nog nooit die ge-voel gehad om hul eie nuwe skoene aan tetrek nie. Gewoonlik kry hulle maar skoenewat vir ’n familielid te klein is.”

Jarman, a regular at the facility and conve-nience store, decided to buyChristmas giftsfor all the staff’s children. “Each and everytime my son and I fill up, we are greetedwith a smile and excellent service. I visitthe shop on a regular basis, and am alwaysgreeted with smiles and a ‘good morningMama’,” says Felicity.She adds that the forecourt and retail

shop are always spotless, the stock fresh,and the staff remarkablyhonest. “On fillingup one time, my son decided to throw awaythe rubbish in his car, but included someimportant documents. The staff noticedthis and handed the document to themana-ger, who contacted me.Last year, I decided they’re such lovely

people and always so good to me andmy fa-mily that I needed to do something for themas a thank you. I asked for a list of theirchildren, as I wanted to buy them some-thing for Christmas.”Armed with the list, Felicity cleverly en-

rolled friends and colleagues, together gi-ving each child (45 in all, ranging fromthree months to 25 years) a gift.Five months later, her son asked her to

go to the Engen on some pretext. “As I ente-red the shop I was surprised with a Mo-ther’s Day gift – a beautiful wall clock anda huge box of toffees and chocolates – anda lovely card. It was the most awesome giftI have ever received! I had no idea the staffhad planned this with my son for twoweeks.”Felicity says the joy on staff’s faces when

she delivered the gifts on 24 December wasall the thanks she needed.“But this gesture was something else. It

just shows what friendship is about, andthatwe are all just peoplewhomust respecteach other.”If given the opportunity, she says, she

Twee werkers van Dewald Gerber, die bou-er wat glo mense se geld vat en dan die bou-werk opneuk, wil hom nou by die kommis-sie vir versoening, bemiddeling en arbitra-sie (KVBA) verkla.TygerBurgerberig opbladsy 3oorhoeDe-

wald werk van swak gehalte lewer, en deurminstens twee mense in die middel van ’nkontrak weggejaag is.

Nou wil twee van sy voormalige werkers,MichaelFleurs enSeunDaniëls, hombydieKVBA verkla weens onder meer onwettigeontslag en beserings aan diens.

Michael en Seun het by Dewald in PortElizabeth gewerk en toe hy Kaap toe ver-huis, het hulle saam gekom. Hy het hulleegter uit hul diens ontslaan toe hulle op 7Mei, die verkiesingsvakansiedag, werk aan’n kliënt se huis wou voltooi.

“Die kliënt het gevra of ons nie wil inkomom die werk klaar te maak nie, want diebouprojek was agter skedule. Dewald hethulle toe laat weet hulle werk nie meer virhom nie,” sê Michael.

Hy sê hulle kan nie bekostig om nie tewerk nie, want sy meisie moet kraam enSeun kon al twee familie-begrafnisse in dieOos-Kaap nie bywoon nie, omdat hy nie ge-noeg geld gehad het nie. “Al het die huiseie-naar Dewald gevra om te loop, makeer onsdie geld.”

Op ’n vraag of hulle nie ook al ongerymd-hede met Dewald se manier van werk opge-merk het nie, sê Michael hulle het.

“Ons was al by tye ongemaklik met sywerkwyse, maar ’n man wil mos maar niepraat nie, want jy wil nie jou werk verloornie,” sê Michael. Seun sê op sy beurt hy hetamper sy hand afgesny aan diens, maar hetgeen hulp van Dewald ontvang nie. “Ekmoes alles self betaal,” beweer hy.

Dewald sêhoewel die tweebyhom inPortElizabeth gewerk het, hulle nie saam methom na Kaapstad gekom het nie.

“Hulle het op hul eie hier aangekom enby hom werk kom soek. Hulle is ook nie on-wettig ontslaan nie, aangesien hulle net ty-delike personeel was. “Dit het my gegriefdat hulle gaan werk het, terwyl ek wegge-jaag is. Hoe kan hulle nou wil goed genoegwees, maar hulle werk vir my en die bou-werk was glo slordig?” vra Dewald.

Oor die aantyging dat hy nie met medieseonkoste vir Seun se besering gehelphet nie,sê hy: “Alle gelde is betaal wat betaal moesword.”

Luna Paige’s newest release is breakingdown traditional recording bounda-ries.

The singer songwriter has just releasedher fifth album,Borders and Beyond, whichmarks five years since her last English rele-ase, her third album, Wonderful life.Luna says after her third album she wan-

ted to do something inAfrikaans,which shedidwithStorielied, which also becamea liveDVD.“Obviously in themeantime Iwrote quite

a few English songs,” she says, “so if you’vewritten them you have to record them.”Celebrated musician and producer,

Schalk Joubert produced the album and heapproached the recording in a rather inte-resting way.Borders and Beyond was mostly recorded

at his home on a farm outside Stellenbosch.Sound engineer David Langemann came inand put up scaffolding and sound boardsand placed mics while they were rehear-sing.“The album was recorded so quickly Lu-

na didn’t even realise it,” Schalk says, jo-kingly adding, “She said she felt cheated.”

Surprise recordingDavid worked while they were rehear-

sing and the album took only two days torecord. They spent another two days polis-hing and adding final touches and, just likethat, they had an album.Schalk played the finished product to his

friend Simon Orange from Blues Broerswho said it sounded like a big productionfrom Nashville. “It was one of those surpri-se recordings,” Schalk says.“We wanted to keep it organic and real,

and the musicians were excellent,” he says.The album features Kevin Gibson on

drums, Henry Steel on guitar and Schalk onbass.They started out wanting a garage-soun-

ding album, but Schalk says the musiciansthey worked with were just too good.“It sounds like a million bucks,” says

Schalk. “When you have an artist that wri-

tes really good songs andyou rehearse themwith a good band, then the whole processis really easy.”Luna tells how Schalk and Kevin set up

in the lounge, the guitar amps were in thebedroom behind a closed door while Henryand Luna sat in the passageway while theywere recording.They happened to be right in front of Si-

mon Orange’s room, and he ended up alsoplaying on the album in his “tea break”.Violinist Piet de Beer, who plays for the

Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and cellistAnjulie Nock also added touches to Bordersand Beyond.Peter Mitchell, and regular collaborator

Gerald Clark, and Idols star Andriëtte Nor-man also lent their voices to the album.

Novel musicOn “One Day”, the song Luna wrote for

her showwith Gerald, Lovemore, Luna usesthe concept behind her Storielied album,turning novels into songs, putting the ac-claimedDavidNicholls novelwith the samename to music.The title track sounds like a love song, but

Luna says it has a slight political angle, al-beit “obtuse”, as Schalk points out. This, to-gether with the fact that a lot of the songswerewrittenwhile Lunawas travelling andthat some of them deal with the spaces bet-ween people, made Borders and Beyond anatural choice for an album name.Schalk says the name sees Luna emanci-

pating herself from traditional borders,which is exactly what she did with the re-cording of the album.SAMA-award winning Dave, who spent

dojos we are going to perform well and sur-prise a few countries in December when wecompete in the Kyokushin World Union ju-nior tournament in Moscow,” said Bosman.
