Hulle was wonderlik.”

Kol.

Hyis later ontslaan.

City’s online wasp app takes offTheCity’s newonlinewasp reporting ap-

plication is gaining popularity as morethan 600wasp reports have been logged

via this tool – mostly in January this year.Since the launch of the City of Cape

Town’s InvasiveWaspControl (IWC) projectover 9 000 European paper wasp nests havebeen removed from the core areas of infesta-tion such as Durbanville, Kuils River,Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Bellville. The IWC project controls the invasive Eu-

ropean paper and German wasps withinCity boundariesEuropeanpaperwaspnests have also been

removed fromhomes in SomersetWest, Gor-don’s Bay, Bothasig, Ottery, Plumstead,Constantia, Woodstock, Athlone, Wetton,Parklands, Sunningdale, Pinelands, Newl-ands and Rondebosch.According to amedia release issued by the

City of Cape Town last week, this indicatesthat the invasion is spreading tomore areas.

More than 2 000 people have accessed theCity of Cape Town’s new onlinewasp report-ing application since the launch of the appli-cation in November last year, according tothe media release. This user-friendly development tool has

made the logging of wasp reports more ac-cessible to members of the public, which al-lows for a quicker response time to havewasps removed.Interestingly, the data indicates that peo-

ple across the world, including from theUnited States of America, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand,Namibia and Kenya have visited the site atwww.edrr.co.za/wasps.According to international cases of inva-

sion involving the European paper and Ger-man wasps, these insects have the potentialto create problems ranging frombeing a nui-sance to having catastrophic economic im-pacts in the wine, deciduous fruit and bee-

keeping industries. The German wasp in particu-

lar is quite aggressive and thereare several reported cases ofthem stingingworkers harvest-ing grapes and other fruits. They can present a hazard to

people and home owners enjoy-ing the outdoors and uninten-tionally disturb a colony. These wasps also feed on ma-

ture grapes in the late summermonths and cause extensivedamage to vineyards.Theyarealsoknown toattack

and kill honeybees and infil-trate bee hives, which are detri-mental to the honey industry.Wasp season usually occursduring warmer periods, fromSeptember to May.“We can see that the waspsEuropean paper wasps sitting on their nest.

are spreading across the city. However, since the start of the wasp season, we haveremoved over 1 300 nests. This is far lessthan the previous corresponding seasonwhen 2 500 were removed. Wasps seem to belower in numbers than usual, likely due tothe weather patterns,” said Johan van derMerwe, mayoral committee member for en-ergy, environmental and spatial planning.“The City is therefore taking this opportu-

nity to remove as many wasp nests as possi-ble to try and decrease their presence aheadof the warmer days. Residents are encour-aged to use the online tool to report waspsightings so that the nests can be removedas soon as possible.“By using a simple online tool, the wasp

project is nowable to find the locationof newsightings and confirm the status of thesesightings instantly,” Van der Merwe said.Removal happens on a first-reported, first-

response basis and calls are queued accord-ing to the order of time reported.

Residents are advised that the sting fromthese wasps is particularly painful.Property owners are primarily responsi-

ble for pest control on their premises, andthe Citywill assist according to available ca-pacity.If nests are removed privately, property

owners areurged to senda report containingtheir street address and the number of nestsremoved to [email protected] as this helps with the City’s fu-ture planning and research, as well as deter-mining the movement of the wasps. The City’s IWC project does not respond

to reports outside the city boundaries, or toindigenouswasp reports, or reports of indig-enous bees.V For more information, residents should visitwww.capetowninvasives.org.za or visit www.facebook.com/ctinvasives. For queries or problems uploading wasp reports, residents can send an emailto [email protected] with “WASPS”in the subject line.

Local musicians will be coming together toassist a Parklands family after a horrific dogattack has left them with rising medicalbills. Two and a half year-old Ella-Grace Mos-

tert was bitten by a Boerboel Labrador crossjust after Christmas, while she was visitingher grandmother in Pretoria with her fa-ther, Jade.Jade says the attack happened as they

were preparing to go to the airport to headhome on 28 December.“I never saw exactly what happened, but

my niece said the dog grabbed Ella-Gracefrom behind for no apparent reason.”The dog was thought to be after her food

on the table. The owner of the dog tried to pull it off El-

la-Grace, andwhenJade sawwhatwas goingon he also jumped in, although he says theexperience was “a bit of a blur”.His niece later toldhim the attackhad last-

ed about 10 seconds. “Any longer and mydaughter would’ve been dead.”In fact, even while Ella-Grace was receiv-

ingmedical care later, the nurses were scep-tical that she would pull through. The force with which Ella-Grace was bit-

ten left her with two fractures in her skulland a piece of bone piercing her brain mem-brane.She had eight puncture wounds and six

deep tears, which meant 100 stitches for thelittle girl. While her parents are very grateful that

Ella-Grace survived the attack, they are asgrateful that therewasnodamage to her eye-sight or brain.“This is a sure miracle and all glory

should go to God,” Jade says. He andNatalieare both religious and say they are both verygrateful to God and want to give Him the ex-posure and glory where they can.Ella-Grace spent about four days in an in-

duced coma before the family could fly homeon 3 January. Now that Jade has his daugh-ter safely at home however, he has to worryabout the next challenge.“Bills will, I’m sure, start arriving in the

mail in a few days or so.”To help with these costs Wendy Oldfield,

LionelBastos, PaulClogg andStewartDixonwill perform a fundraising concert at OceanSizzler at Eden on the Bay on Sunday 31 Jan-uary from 16:00.Paul and Stewart of Silverland, the resi-

dent band at Ocean Sizzler, decided to ar-range the concert after hearing about Ella-Grace.Wendy will be travelling from Knysna to

perform. While entrance is free, organisers are

dat sy in Noord-Wes is vir ’n seminaar,maar beroof is van haar sak met selfoonen bankkaart. Sy soek dan R3 000 omhaar dinge uit te sorteer.“Dis in sulke swak Afrikaans geskryf;

“Ge-

kerk, my dramastudente, selfs van 20jaar gelede, het gebel. Selfs my suster sekinders in Pretoria en my skoonfamilie– ook almal wat ek per e-pos na my mase 80ste verjaarsdag genooi het,” vertelsy. “Ek voel dankbaar dat so baie mensevir my omgee.”’n Gemeentelid en rekenaar-ghoeroe

ble organisationwhich strives to restoredig-nity and build self-esteem and self-confi-dence in unemployed people through vari-ous skills development courses.“This is achieved by including life skills

and spiritual development with all skillsprogrammes, which aids the development ofthe values and attitudes needed to find andkeep employment,” says Jane Gelderman, director of FCD.Although the job readiness and frail care

courses are already full for January, stu-dents can still enrol for the bake-for-profitcourse, as well as for future courses.TheFCDhasmany successes, saysGelder-

man, such as Alma Fortuin, who has com-pleted the bake-for-profit course. This course equips people to start a small

baking business and to earn an income fromhome.

“She said that she has learned so manyskills while job shadowing, which she coulduse in her own home baking business.“She worked alongside Katy Abrahams,

another past student who has been em-ployed by The Banting Shop on the referralof FCD,” says Gelderman. On completion of the training, the bake-

for-profit learners are rewardedwith certifi-cates and a gift of flour from Snowflake.Another bake for profit graduate, Elize

Hayes, said “this course helped me to besomebody who can make a business andtaught me that I can achieve my goals”.Training takes place in a relaxed fun-filled

environment with many opportunities forpractical application of skills and role-play,Gelderman says. The job readiness course prepares

learners to enter the workforce with basiccomputer skills and a customer service ori-entation. Training covers curriculum vitaepreparation, interview skills, job searchingon the internet and the job application proc-ess.“The centre also assists its learners with

finding jobs after successful com-pletion of the training, such as Pickn Pay Graanendal, one of our jobshadow and placement partners.“Over the past year, this store ap-

pointed more than six of our jobreadiness trainees,” Geldermansays.Cameron Rodeman said: “I was

shy and without confidence. I alsostutter, but I have gained a lot ofconfidence now. I thank Fisante-kraal Centre for Development forthat.”V People interested in the courses cancontact the FCD on 021 975 7764 or bySMS to 078 439 0026, or visit the centreat the Durbanville taxi rank. ‘Skokstok’ toets glo heiningkrag

By monde van kapt. Fienie Nimb, woord-

WesternCape qualify for supplemen-tary examinations in February, giv-

ing them a second chance at obtaining theirnational senior certificate (NSC).“While the vastmajority of our candidates

confirmed this number to be over 7000.“This provides the candidates with a won-

els and emotions can get the better of someof our candidates which could result in thecandidate not performing at their best.”“I strongly encourage these candidates to

make use of this opportunity and put in theirbest effort to pass the exam. For those candi-dates who did not pass their NSC or qualifyfor a supplementary, there is still the oppor-tunity to apply to write the 2016 NSC.

Die man sê toe hy makeer my e-pos-adres.

Skrikkeljaarmenseverjaar darem weerI write in agreement with

Peter Smulik’s letter (“Greenmen cause problems”, Tyger-Burger, 13 January) wheredisenchantment is shown withthe new so-called Grand Planfor traffic.Over the last year since

traffic lights have been resetby those in charge, motoristshave had to tolerate sitting inrow after row of stationaryvehicles waiting for un-se-

‘Making our lives onthe road difficult’

quenced traffic lights to change. This not only causes a

wastage of expensive andprecious fuel and wear and tearon the vehicle, but also a lot ofdriver frustration and roadrage. Those in traffic manage-ment have succeeded in slowingtraffic right down, to a stand-still – more so on a Fridaywhen traffic is heavy. To make matters worse, once

the lights finally turn green andcars can gather speed, there isusually a speed trap waiting forthe unweary motorist.Meanwhile, in the ensuing

snarl-ups there is seldom atraffic officer to be seen assist-ing the flow. This smacks of nothelping – rather making ourlives on the road difficult.Meanwhile, at the municipal-

ity, long waiting lines are to beseen for those renewing theirvehicle licences, while Metropolice ticket cars outside forexpired licence discs. One cannot help but feel that

the powers that be are not thereto aid the motorist, but ratherto line municipal pockets.

LEWENSKIEKIE

By verdraagsaamheid gaan dit nie net

Amusical journey that started inMitchell’s Plain has reached a ma-jor milestone with the launch of

Carmen Xclusive’s debut solo CD.Now living in Parow, manymusic lov-

erswill simply knowher as CarmenHer-bert, or if you’re a bit more old-school“Carmen from N2”.She laughs when acknowledging her

association with the popular band.“Yes, that was a very important time

in my life, my education and training inthe music business, but it started beforeI joined them,” she says.Like so many musicians on the Cape

Flats, the roots of her talent are in thechurch, but sheused to sneakaway to theInn on the Plain to listen to RudolphPaulse and the band Horizon.“I loved the music. It just meant some-

thing special to me. I was persuaded toenter a singing competition there andthe rest is – as they say – history.“Offers came in for me to perform at

cabaret shows and I was only 14 at thetime but I fell in love with the businessand just enjoyed singing.”Asword spread about the young talent

she joined up with Mike Kwagga’s Nuff-Zed when she was 16 and a year laterjoined the Wentzel brothers in N2.“Performing with them for almost ten

years was an exciting time for me. Thiswas almost like me going to college andlearning to hone my talent.“Eventually I felt that I wanted to take

a step up in my career by going beyondthe club scene, get into the corporate sce-nario and work in a wider variety ofstyles.“That’s also when I decided to become

Carmen Xclusive as a brand that wanted

to show the world my own identity andthat there’s only one me,” she laughs.Since then she has impressed music

lovers with the best in the business inSouth Africa and discovered the jazzierside of her talent with Ian Smith’s VJRand various collaborations with thelikes of Richard Caesar, Allou April andRobbie Jansen. With the release of her albumXclusive

Nites @ Pigalles she has surrounded herwith some of the best around town. Cam-illo Lombard produced the album withhis band Top Dog backing her as well asa brass section comprising Ian Smithand Willy Haubrich.Carmen confesses that she has been

going around to some of the popular ra-dio stations but can’t get any of them tofeature the album on their playlists. This remains amystery because every

tune on this album is a carefully craftedgem.“It’s an album of my favourite covers

done my way,” she says.“On Volume 2 I am going to give the

world some of my originals.”She opens with the David Foster com-

positionLove thatwill Last and thequali-ty of the voice that made so many loveher is immediately evident, with themagic just keeping on coming your way.She takes some pop classics like Get

Lucky and Valerie from AmyWinehouseand twists them into tunes that could fea-ture on an albumof new jazzy standards.Even Charlie Chaplin’s Smile featureswith a funkier kind of feel. With a debut like this let’s hope that

Carmen gets back into the studio veryquickly to give the world some more ofher musical magic.V For more information on where to get the album, email [email protected] or callBernie on 079 871 9855.

UWC’sCentre forEntrepreneurship and In-novation (CEI) proudly graduated theirfirst crop of entrepreneurship fellows. The class of 2015 comprised a group of

graduateswhoparticipated in the pilot Sup-plier development trainingprogrammepre-sented by the CEI and sponsored by the pro-vincial government. The programme allows for peer to peer

learning and facilitation support amongsmall business owners wishing to growskills and opportunities.Participants attendworkshops, receiving

peer consulting and exchanging field ser-vice opportunities. They also have thechance to connect and collaborate with oth-er distinguished changemakers in their in-dustry’s development field.

UWC finance director, Manie Regal, said:“The fellowship started as an incubationprogramme, but has transformed itself intoa business support project where entrepre-neurs can receive tried and tested advicefrom their peers.”Regal noted that one lesson all entrepre-

Many might recognise her face as theviolinist for Sterling EQ, but Durban-ville’s Renate Riedemann has found

her voice.Renate was still a member of the award

winning instrumental pop group when shedecided to sign herself up for singing lessons, equating the process to learning a new in-

strument. Along the way she discovered her“secret love for jazz”.

“It was never something that I was exposedto,” the classically trained musician ex-plains, adding: “I am smitten”.

Sterling EQ had become a full time job forRenate and while she describes her threeyears with the band as a “wonderful experi-ence”, she also wanted to create her own mu-sical identity. As a freelance musician shefound the fulfilment of playing for every-

thing from theatre pieces to big pop shows. While recording strings for an album that

producer Johan Oberholzer was working on,Renate mentioned her singing to him and heopened up about his idea for an acoustic har-monic-driven Afrikaans act. The result wasthe folk Afrikaans girl-band Dogters vanMan, which Renate joined soon after leavingSterling EQ.

“It spoke to so many young Afrikaans lis-teners and they wanted something that

wasn’t that commercial.”The start of their success coincided with

a tumultuous time in the South Africanrecord industry and they became some-thing of a “one-hit wonder”, but it wasn’tlong before she struck out on her own.

After recording “What Do You Say”, Re-nate, unaware of normal music industrypractices, sent her track to radio stationsherself from her gmail account and “bysome miracle” RSG’s Amore Bekkerpicked up on the song.

Since then Renate has been signed toStoneBear & Mayor Records, an independ-ent boutique label started by Helmut Mei-jer and Lukas de Beer.

Together they are working on a new sin-gle, written by Lukas, “Another Storm”,which she hopes to release at the end of

February. The single may become part of aconcept album combining instrumental andvocal elements, but Renate doesn’t want tomake any promises yet.

Renate is waiting to build her repertoirebefore she performs solo shows, but in themeantime, music fans can catch her at theOude Libertas Amphitheatre on Sundaywhen she performs for Mauritz Lotz’s Kalei-doscopic Live show.V Tickets for the show are available at Computicket.
