Over 300 people participated in theWorld Hand Hygiene relay at the Tyg-erberg Hospital on Thursday.

The human chain from the surgical out-patients department on the fifth floor to theD5 surgical ward consisted of doctors, nurs-es, hospital management, ancillary, domes-tic, housekeeping, administrative, emer-gency medical staff, technicians and stu-dents.

One of the hospital’s goals was to breakthe record of people participating in thisevent, but unfortunately they fell short.

Ultimately, this day wasn’t aboutrecords, but creating awareness of how im-portant hand hygiene is.

Hospital spokesperson, Laticia Pienaar, elaborates: “Every year hospital related in-fections kill 16 million patients worldwide.Germs are microscopic and cannot be seenwith the naked eye. Hands are the mostcommon vehicle of transmission of germsin the community and in hospitals. A sim-ple intervention of effective hand hygienecan potentially reduce hospital acquired in-fections and thus related deaths by up to50%.”

The hospital formed part of a WorldHealth Organisation “Save Lives” cam-paign.

All participants passed on a hand hygienebaton and demonstrated a moment of handhygiene prior to and after handling of thebaton.

Pienaar continues: “In 2015 over 30 000people took part in relays internationallyand an Iranian hospital set a new recordwith 660 workers. We fell short of this

record, but it has been shown that all hospi-tals who took part in the campaign, in-crease the handwashing/hygiene compli-ance within their own health care facility.”

The event was officially opened by thechief operations officer of Tygerberg Hospi-tal, Dr Paul Ciapparelli.

All wards and individuals were encour-aged to create hand hygiene posters, withthe best judged posters winning a varietyof sponsored hamper prizes. Prizes werehanded out immediately after the event.

Pienaar emphasises that it is a patient’sright to ask their health professionalwhether they washed their hands beforetreating you.

She concludes: “When washing yourhands you should use soap and water. Fric-tion and rubbing is most important to loos-en germs from the skin surface.

“Make sure you rub everywhere – bothsurfaces of both hands, between the fingers, nails, tip of fingers and thumbs as well asweb spaces. Rub for at least 30-40 seconds, rinse well and dry properly with a cleanhand towel or paper. The use of hand sani-tisers is an effective way to clean handswithout soap and water. Hand sanitiserscannot be used when hands are visiblydirty or soiled with body fluids. You shouldwash your hands before and after the prepa-ration of food, before and after eating, afterusing the toilet or changing a nappy, aftertouching animals or waste items, afterblowing your nose, or sneezing or coughingin your hands.

“Hospitalised patients should wash theirhands on entering a ward, clinic, or patientroom, or when they exit these units. Thesame applies to visitors of hospitalised pa-tients.”

Yet another senior citizen was assaultedduring a robbery in Brackenfell last weekTuesday, making it the third attack on eld-erly persons in little more than a month.

Two suspects were arrested later. The 64-year-old man was attacked shortly

after he arrived on his farm in Brackenfellon Tuesday morning.

“He was delivering newspapers and uponhis return, he was approached by an un-

known man who demanded his cellphoneand money. When he said he had nothing, the suspect attacked him with a big knife. The man tried to ward off the attack bygrabbing the knife, and sustained seriousinjuries,” says Captain FC Van Wyk fromthe Western Cape Police’s media centre.

“A second suspect, who at the time at-tempted to gain entrance to the man’shouse, came to assist his partner, afterwhich the two fled on foot when a securityvehicle arrived.”

The man was taken for treatment.

Skool doen onontbeerlike werkANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Ontmoet Riaan*, ’n student by

’n vooraanstaande kollege.Riaan se lewe was op ’n ver-

Nie alle stories is egter so positief soos

Dit is eintlik goed so,want hoeminder jyweet, hoeminderweer-baar is jy.“Dis baie hartseer.

vandiehospitaal hierheen, par-tykeer in rolstoele.

plaas.Michelle Luscombe, ’n ontvanger van ’n

skenkershart, sal praat by die byeenkomsmet die tema “Uit die hart”.Viljoen Retief sal gedurende die oggend

so twee of drie liedjies sing en daar sal ookitems uitgeloot word.

Dog attacks – how to protect yourself, child

Never approach unknown dogs

A dog may be a “man’s best friend” but doyou know how to reduce your chances of be-ing bitten by one?According to Samantha Walpole, the sec-

retary of Animal Behavioural Consultantsof SouthAfrica, children are themost at riskof being bitten by dogs and should be educat-ed about how to act around and take care oftheir dogs.“Children are generally drawn to dogs.

Wagging tails are attractive to children. Un-fortunately, the public is ill informed that ifa dog’s tail iswagging, itmeans that it is hap-py and is safe to approach. This is far fromthe truth. Children are also taught that hug-ging and kissing is an acceptable form of af-fection. Itmightbe tohumans, but to caninesthis is perceived as confrontational.“Fundamentally, humans and dogs speak

a different language. When communicationis misunderstood, people get bitten,” saysWalpole, who is also a dog behaviourist andtrainer.Dogs could also turn on their owners as

a result of a number of reasons.Walpole says dogs that bite their owners,

or anyone else, could have an underlyingmedical condition. The dog could also bepushed to a point where it has no choice orcould feel that its life is being threatened.Harsh and confrontational training meth-ods could also be a contributing factor withregards to human related dog aggression.Walpole says that people should purchase

dogs from reputable breeders to minimisethe risk of being bitten.“If you want to purchase a puppy, do your

homework to match the right breed withyour lifestyle. Join a reputable positive rein-forcement socialisation school. Thereshould be continued training to build a goodbond between you and your dog. You shouldseek assistance immediately if there are anyearly signs that make you uncomfortable,”said Walpole. She provides the following tips and urges

parents to educate their children.“Be respectful to your dog. Research and

learnhow to ‘speakdog’. There are anumberof body signals that adogdisplays to indicatethat it is uncomfortable and needs space or

that it likeswhat you are doing. Bywatchingyour dog’s body language and understand-ing what your dog is saying, you are able tostop or change the reason for your dog feel-ing uncomfortable.“Learn what your dog likes and dislikes

and respect these needs. A dog should not betreated like a toy or tested to see how toler-ant it is. Do not poke, push or sit on a dogor pull its tail. Stop what you are doing ifa dog shows discomfort. Signs of discomfortinclude when the dog turns its head awayfrom you, when the dog yawns, flicks histongue out of his mouth or licks his nose, when the dog’s body freezes, when it movesaway, lifts its lips or growls. Also stop whatyou are doingwhen the dog showswhale-eye(pronounced whites of the eye). This is oftenmisunderstood as a ‘guilty look’ when it is

actually an appeasement gesture in re-sponse to the stimulus.”“Never corner a dog and do not reprimand

a dog when it growls. This is a language pri-or to a bite. Growling means that a personshould leave the dog alone. If your dog bitessomeone, do not place the dog in a similarsituation. If necessary, temporarily confinethe dog in a safe area with water and shelterand immediately seek the assistance of aqualified trained and professional animalbehaviourist.”Walpole says an unfamiliar dog should be

ignored.“Do not encourage an unfamiliar dog to

approach you. Quietly and calmly walkaway. Do not turn your back on the dog butrather try tohave your body facing sidewaystoward the dog,” says Walpole.

If the dog approaches to attack you, do notscream, run away or turn your back on thedog. Do not make eye contact as this is oftenperceived as confrontational.“Keep your hands close to your body and

stand still until the dog has backed away oris preferably out of sight. If you have foodon you, break it up into small pieces and un-derarm toss the food toward the dog’s head.If thedogeats, continue to toss the foodwhileslowly backing away to a safe place,” saysWalpole. You can also place something such as a

chair or backpack if available between youand the dog.“If you are unable to escape an attacking

dog, place yourself in a foetal position withyourhead tucked towardyour chest and cov-er your head with your hands.”ER24’s Dr Kumeshan Moodley, who has

treated numerous people for dog bites, saysthat anyone bitten, even if minor injuries, should visit a medical practitioner. He says that one of the main reasons for

this is the possibility of developing infec-tions or rabies. Rabies, a viral and almostalways fatal disease, is mainly transmittedby the bite of an infected animal. The virus exists in the saliva of a rabid an-

imal such as a dog.People who develop rabies could experi-

ence anything from headache, fever, vomit-ing, muscle pain, difficulty swallowing, anx-iety, profuse salivation, paralysis, restless-ness, fear of water and seizures.DrMoodley says that apersonwill notnec-

essarily develop symptoms immediately. Itis possible to only experience symptoms lat-er in life. There is no effective treatment for people

or animals once they develop rabies symp-toms. Hence it is important to seek medicalattention immediately after being bitten.“Treatment of bites depends on the severi-

ty of the injury as well as whether the dogwas a stray, a pet that was immunised or notimmunised. Where it is unknown if the dogwas immunised, as a precaution, the patientwould be treated based on assumption thatthe dog was not immunised,” said Dr Mood-ley.

Despite dwindling numbers, the re-maining members of the PeerlessPark West Neighbourhood watch,

leave no stone unturned to keep their crimeriddled community safe at night.

In recent weeks they caught three sus-pects – one of which a 14-year-old allegedarmed robber – mere minutes after theycommitted their crimes.

During the first incident a few Saturdaynights ago, patrollers spotted three youngmen walking down Conroy Street after23:00.

“They appeared very suspect as theywalked very hurriedly and looked back in-termittently,” says member Johan Men-toor.

“We drove around the block to confrontthem on the street corner. But when we gotout of our vehicle they started runningaway.”

They managed to apprehend two of thesuspects – a man in his early twenties cur-rently under corrective supervision, and aboy of 14. The third suspect got away.

It transpired the that gang of three justminutes earlier robbed a man sitting in hiscar in front of a food outlet at a nearby shop-ping centre.

“They pointed a firearm at him and or-dered him to hand over all the valuables inthe car, which we found out from the com-plainant later were two cellphones. Thethird suspect got away with the booty andthe firearm,” said Mentoor.During another patrol last Saturday

night, they caught a burglar in the act.“We spotted himwalking down the street

and passed him on several streets. He toldus he was visiting his girlfriend, and aftersearching himwe found nothing. Much lat-er we found him still walking about and westarted following him. As we came aroundonecornera caralarmwentoff as theyoungman started running away from the vehi-cle. We caught up with him and he later ad-mitted to smashing a window.”

Police arrested him on the scene.Mentoor says the four patrollers left on

the neighbourhood watch volunteer muchof their time, especially over weekends.

“We are notmany, and residents don’t re-alise how much goes on in their streets atnight while they are sleeping.

“They don’t see what we see and maybethis iswhy they don’twant to get involved,”he says. The Peerless Park NeighbourhoodWatch recently started anewalert group onWhatsApp and encourage residents to getinvolved this way.V Contact Mentoor on 072 226 9653.

She may look like your average teenag-er, but this Stellenberg songbird Julan-ie J is anything but.

In fact, the 17-year-old has already enjoyedchart success with her debut album. WhenSpirit Breakout was released last year, itwent to number three on the South AfricaniTunes chart and placed at number 34 ontheir international chart in a matter of 24hours.Now, just a few months later, Julanie is

already cooking up something new.Until recently, she’s been performing

what she describes as “Christian contempo-rarymusic”, but this year she’smade the de-cision to move into the secular market.“I feel like it’s a bigger platform, and this

is what I love,” she explains, referring to thenew “RnB and pop” songs she’s been work-ing on.Julanie has been writing songs since she

was a child, and besides the 12 originaltracks onSpirit Breakout, and the new songsshe is writing for her upcoming FearlessHeart, due to be released in 2017, she’s alsobeenpenninghits for local and internationalartists. One of these is Congolese star Lokua Kan-

za and more recently she’s been workingwith Helmut Meijer on his new project Cal-ev. Her writing collaborations have mostlybeen a result of the response to her debut al-bum. “They liked the music and the soundof the album.” Others came after her per-formances on television shows like SABC3’sExpresso.While Julanie calls Spirit Breakout a “typ-

ical worship album with a bit of pop”, she’splanning something a little more edgy whenshe goes back into studio this time round.“Itwill haveakindof Jessie J andBeyoncé

feel,” she says, adding that she’s already en-listed the help of The Arrows’ Pamela DeMenezes for Fearless Heart.Julanie will performher first ever secular

show at Barnyard Willowbridge on Monday16May, in preparation for her performancesat the Grahamstown National Arts festival.“I’mkindof excited for that; I think it’s goingto be a fun show.”Julanie will be performing a combination

of jazz, pop, RnB andwhat she calls “fun, lis-

tenable music” with the help of sound engi-neer Duane Brown who is also the man be-hind Elvis Blue’s live sound, Winston Sil-jeur on keys and JP Crouch on drums, among others. She’ll also play some of the songs off Fear-

less Heart for the first time and says: “It’s adeep show, but on a fun level.”“It’s songs about love and people; strug-

gles they have and struggles I have.”When she returns fromGrahamstown, Ju-

lanie will be preparing for the launch of herdebut book, Hearts Can Heal. The book will be published by American

based company E-Gen and deals with over-coming abuse and her own journey of heal-ing.In themeantime, music fans can catch her

High school learners from schools inBloekombos and Wallacedene partic-ipated in three sporting codes at a

sports festival held at Central Park sportgrounds on Thursday last week. This historic event, the first of its kind,

(Wallacedene, Bloekombos, Hector Peters-en and Masibambane) competed in soccer, rugby and netball matches.“This festival highlights our attempts to

deal with the issue of gangsterism, not only

with policing but by providing learnerswith an alternative healthy lifestyle,” saysRajan Naidoo, principal at MasibambaneHigh School.“Sport is an excellent means of develop-

ing learners holistically as it promotes ateam work ethic and instills values of re-spect, commitment and discipline.”He hopes to make this an annual event

where every participant will receive med-als to celebrate their participation.“It is not only those who come first who

are winners – everyone is a winner by sim-ply participating.”Asset, anNGObased in theWesternCape,

“They don’t have much, but theystill have a body that can doamazing things.”

This is one of the key lessons Hanne LaCour says the ActionArte Foundationtries to teach the children they work with. The organisation has been using circus

performance skills to help empoweryoungpeople, especially in the Hanover Parkcommunity, and non-circus folk will get aglimpse of their non- traditional actswhenthe foundation’s core group performs atTrash Cabaret’s Carnival of Dreams atHillcrest Quarry on Saturday 14 May.The foundation was started by Hanne,

who is originally fromDenmark, andMar-lin Roos, a second generation circus per-former who has been training since theage of seven.Hanne says Marlin has always been in-

terested in learning, teaching and givingback to the community of Hanover Parkthrough free classes. She, on the otherhand, comes from a background of theatreand social projects and when the two met, they decided to combine their skills.“I was fascinated by the circus,” Hanne

says, so she started to train and travelledwithMarlin toSpain where they spent twoyears learning how to use circus trainingas a teaching method. They started offer-ingworkshops soonafter returning inJan-uary 2014.“Living in Hanover Park is hard.”Hanne highlights issues like gang vio-

lence and lack of involvement from par-ents and says ActionArte connects withchildren by keeping them off the streets, inspiring them to be creative and teachingthem about the importance of education.By teaching childrenwhat their bodies arecapable of, they also instil a sense of posi-tivity and teach children that they canchoose a better life. The foundation’s teachers use juggling,

for example, to teach children concentra-tion and reason. “To keep the balls in theair you have to want it and have to findthe rhythm and coordination.” They alsouse the juggling to teach little ones mathe-

matics. While they don’t go into the fullmathematical theory behind the art, theydo use it to teach things like times tables.Childrenwho “can’t sit still” are encour-

aged to train in acrobatics to use their en-ergy positively. The foundation’s core group is made up

of performers from the community whohave been trained as teachers and profes-sional performers. Besides training theyouth and professional classes for anyoneinterested in becoming a circus performeror get fit, they also perform regularly, of-ten at corporate events, to keep the founda-tion running and expanding.ActionArte also raises funds and reach-

es out to the community through theirSundayFunday afternoons at their base inEpping where families are invited to ex-plore their circus world.Hannewill be one of the artists perform-

ing at Trash Cabaret’s Carnival of Dreamson Saturday where she’ll be performingher speciality: hanging by her hair. The multi-cultural cabaret event will

bring together burlesque dancers, acro-

bats, jugglers, aerial artists, roaming char-acters, fire dancers andmusicians in a fes-tival to ignite imaginations.Participating groupswill include Psych-

edelic Theatre, Sky Dance Studio, Leo Let-sape aka Mr.Letsparty, Cami Scoundreland Black Orchid Burlesque who’ll be ledby their ringmaster, Riaan Smit fromCrimson House against a soundtrack pro-vided by acts like Ann Jangle, CrimsonHouse, the Trash Cabaret Band and theMzanzi Marching bandGates open at 16:00 and festival goers are

LEWENSKIEKIE

Three days ofpaternityleave a joke!I’ve had bags under my eyes for so longthat I named them. It’s no coincidence that they’re named

after my two toddlers – Joshua andAmélie.I’m writing this from the perspective of

a very involved and very tired fatherwho gets just as little sleep as his wife. This weekend I went to a well-known

shopping centre in the northern suburbswith my kids and were met by a veryadamant and somewhat sarcastic securityguard. While I was unloading screaming child

number one, the guard marched towardsme and indicated that I was not allowedto park there. He furiously pointedtowards the sign reading “Moms & Tots”.The guard reasoned that I was clearly

not a mom, despite the exaggerated bagsunder my eyes hanging so low that Ineeded a bra.I refused to move the car and flatly

ignored the man.Yet, he had a point!I’m not a mom. Sowhy on earth arethere no “Dads &Tots” parkingspaces?Little did I know

my day was aboutto go from bad toworse.Screaming child

number two had adirty nappy andmuch to mydismay I discov-ered that the baby

changing area was located in the wom-en’s rest rooms. These two issues are more than just a

personal gripe. It affects every single dad, and even

more so every single single dad!As if us poor souls don’t have enough

on our plates already. It’s quite clearly a case of gross sexual

discrimination and tests a tired father’snerves to the extreme.Someone with more energy needs to do

something about it.And don’t get me started on the differ-

ence between maternity and paternityleave in South Africa!A mother needs time to heal physically

and emotionally. In most cases she needsto breastfeed every three hours, so theyobviously need to spend a long time athome after giving birth.A father’s role during this time is

nothing to scoff at, especially if he mustget up to go to work in the morning.Three days of paternity leave is a joke.

V Regarding roadworks on Okavango be-tween Langeberg Road and PinehurstDrive. I never saw so many illiterate mo-torists in my life! Road signs clearly indi-cated “No through way. International Nurses Day will be celebrat-ed tomorrow to commemorate the birth-day of Florence Nightingale, one of the

most well-known nurses of all time.It is a day where nurses worldwide are

thanked for everything they do for thosewho are sick and frail. In line with the global recognition to en-

sure healthy lives and to promotewell-beingfor all, no matter their age, gender or socialstatus, the health departement has adopteda “wellness focus” in their 2016/2017 ap-proach.According to Dr Marie-Paule Kieny, as-

sistant director-general for health systemsand innovation, the WHO (including theWorld Bank 2015), the world’s most disad-vantaged people aremissing out on even themost basic health services. Health policiesand programmes should therefore focus onproviding quality health services for thepoorest people, women and children, peopleliving in rural areas and those fromminori-ty groups. Most people think about hospital staff

when referring to nurses, however there aremany organisations who employ nurses, as-sistant nurses, carers and home-based car-ers to provide health care services to thosein need.

BadisaBadisa, a social work organisation deliv-

ering services in theWestern, Northern andSouthern Cape for instance, employs 127home-based carers who provided care to3716 frail patients during the past year. Thisis apart from the professional nursing staffemployed to provide care to the disabled andthose being treated for substance abuse.

There are also many Badisa programmesthat deliverhealth-care services toprevious-ly disadvantaged communities. One such anexample is Badisa’s Huis Magdalena in Bos-ton, Bellville, which adopts “TheFirst Thou-sand Days” approach in a child’s life andprovides education and assistance to preg-nant women who are at risk due to their so-cial circumstances. These preventative services contribute to

healthier pregnancies, better parentalskills, as well as life and entrepreneurialskills, and also include adoption counsel-ling.

12week courseThe women partaking in these day-care

programmes come from the informal settle-ments of the northern suburbs of CapeTown, such as Klipheuwel, Fisantekraal,Bloekombos, Scottsdene and Wallacedene, and are referred toBadisa by their local clin-ics.Sixty women have attended a 12-week

course during the past year, which includeddaily transport to the training facility aswell as balanced meals.Clicks Pharmacies also extended their as-

sistance to Huis Magdalena in this regardand three dedicated clinics are involved inassisting with family planning, HIV testing, education about STDs during pregnancy, preparation for labour, post natal care aswell as baby vaccinations and milestones.According to Stephny du Plessis, the pro-

grammemanager at HuisMagdalena, this istruly a winning partnership between Mag-dalena and the health sector.V To donate to this worthy cause, send an email [email protected]

When seven-year-old Tyrone Siljeur fromBonteheuwel got a crayon stuck in his earearlier this month, his parents went into abit of a panic, but help was at hand. They took him to a private doctor, but a

small piece remained lodged in his ear andhe was referred to the Red Cross Children’sHospital. Thanks to some generous sponsorship

from Woolworths and MySchool, Tyronewill underwent a small procedure under an-aesthetic to have the crayon removed. If you are part of the MySchool initiative,

you played your part when you did yourChristmas shopping atWoolworths over thefestive season. This led to the donation ofR400 000 that was handed to the Children’sHospital Trust, the fundraising arm of RedCross last week. The donation has been used by the trust

to purchase specialist ear, nose and throat(ENT) equipment that will enable the hospi-

tal each year to help save the lives of ten chil-dren with life-threatening ear diseases andprevent hearing loss in 750 children.Tyrone’s mom Marlene and dad Mornay

were very happy that their son was finallygoing to have a clear ear canal once again.“We are so grateful to the Red Cross Chil-

dren’s Hospital, MySchool and Woolworthsfor the equipment that allows for these typesof operations,” said Mornay.“I don’t know what we would have done

otherwise and I know that Tyrone was invery good hands. The Woolworths Christmas Giving cam-

paignwas supported by internationalmusicsensation Pharrel Williams, and funds wereraised as a special additional donation everytime a customers swiped their MySchoolMyVillage MyPlanet and their linked Wool-worths cards.“Woolworths and MySchool are such val-

SAREL BURGER

Dalk ookomdat ek nie so groot gebou is nie, is hyvir my ’n rolmodel.

Maak opofferings“As rugbyspeler maak jy baie opoffe-

“My ouma, Johanna, alombekend asKleintjie, is van kleintyd my grootste in-spirasie.

“Elke keeras ek tuis speel, is my ouers daar. Hulleis ook my steunpilare wanneer dit goedgaan en ook wanneer dit nie so goed gaannie. Al die meisies woon by StellenboschAcademy of Sport en baie van hulle het ookakademiese kwalifikasies, maar rugby isnou ons almal se eerste prioriteit,” sê sy.

KLUBRUGBY: AFRIGTER GESELS

AVRIL FILLIES

Hy is baie betrokke by die voorspe-lers.

Durbell sespelers regvir sukses

SAREL BURGER

At the tender age of twelve Enya van Ni-ekerk etched her name in history onThursday 7 April as the youngest fe-

male swimmer ever to swim from Robben Is-land to Blouberg Strand.

Whatmakes this feat evenmoreremarkable is the fact that shebraved the icy cold water withoutawetsuit. Enya’s attempt is recog-nised by Cape Long DistanceSwim Association (CLDSA).

The Table View PrimarySchool learner completed the7.5km distance in a time of threehours and 14 minutes.

“I trained five months for thisswimming in the ocean with thewater being between 13 and 15 degrees.

“Some days were tougher than others, butin the end it was all worth it. Besides the coldwater, I also had to dodge hundreds of jelly-fish which required focus to navigate it safely

to the end.“Brendan Hiscock who swam with me en-

couraged me and helped a lot. The first halfwas pretty easy, but soon after that the tideturned against us and it took a lot of mentaltoughness to complete the distance. I kept im-

agining I was in a hot tub,” laugh-ed Enya.

Her father, Leon, took her toBig Bay every day for her to com-plete her 2km swim. The goal wasto do 10km every week.

“I am a very proud dad. Enyashowed tremendous courage anda fighting spirit for five months. In the end all the sacrifices wereworth it. It was something shewanted to do and now she cantick the box,” said Leon.

Enya is a member of the Nippers Big BayLifesavingClub. “I enjoy spending time in thesea and I will definitely do the swim again inthe future; let’s just hope the sea will be calmand make it a little bit easier.”
