Some 291 children were profiled andfingerprinted in a massive four-hourmissing person operation held at Ca-

peGate Shopping Centre over the weekend. The campaign was hosted by Brackenfell

police in partnership with the mall, theBrackenfell CPF and Victim Support Unit,Teahmo and Pink Ladies.“The aimwas to create awareness around

the process to follow when having to reporta missing child and the importance of pro-viding as much as possible information tothe police about the missing person,” sayspolice spokesperson Warrant Officer EricaCrous.Parents completed forms providing all

the relevant information about the child aswell as identifiable marks or scars on thechild’s body. The child was then weighed, measured and fingerprinted.“The forms were given to the parents to

take home and safeguard. The ideal wouldbe to update the information on this formevery three to six months,” she says.If a child goes missing, the parent can

then bring the form, containing the mostimportant information, to the police sta-tion.“From experiencewe knowhowwe some-

times struggle to get this information. It hashappened in the past that we had to wait upto a week to get a most recent photo of amissing person from the family to distrib-ute.

“In one case the most recent photo thatcould be providedwas ofwhen the childwastwo years old,” she says. This is the thirdconsecutive year that Brackenfell policehosted this campaign and Crous says she

hopes it becomes an annual institution.“We are extremely thankful to all the rele-

vant role players for the huge role theyplayed in ensuring the success of this day.By taking hands we canmake a difference.”

“They pick me up at 05:20 and from theretravel to Kuils River and then to the City. After dropping us off at about 07:15, theyleave for Atlantis and other distant regionsto fetch a second load of commuters.”These commuters only get to work as late

as 11:30.When the project started in 1999 they had

34 vehicleswhich, according to Links, couldtransport six passengers of whom threewere in wheelchairs.“Today, after contracting a new company,

they use only 21 vehicles that can transportmore people – five in wheelchairs and threeothers. The problem is the bus has to stopat more homes causingmany commuters tobe late,” he says.Passengers are forced to spendmore than

two hours in the bus while drivers are notallowed to stop along the routes for passen-gers to use the bathroom.“Apart from this there are still thousands

of people – including school children – ona waiting list, and we want to know whatthe City is going to do about this?”The forum demanded to be included in fu-

ture decision making of their transport.“Surely the input of a disabled person is

needed when making decisions that affecttheir lives?“We stated all our concerns, but to this

day it seems that we are being ignored.”Links alleges that the introduction of as-

sessments is only sidetracking from the realissue – a shortage of vehicles, something theCity vehemently denies.“The Dial-a-Ride service has a limited

budget and therefore a limited capacity.Given these constraints, the service is forthe exclusive use by those who have beenassessed by an occupational therapist as be-ing unable to access conventional publictransport services,” says Mayco memberfor transport, Brett Herron, explaining thereason for the compulsory reassessmentproject launched in 2014.“We have tomake sure that thosewho are

on the service are in fact unable tomake useof regular public transport.”“In the end the Dial-a-Ride service will

provide mobility only for those who are as-sessed as not being able to use public trans-port, including the universally accessibleMyCiTi service.“TheMyCiTi system is designed to be uni-

versally accessible – thismeans theMyCiTiservice is provided for both able-bodiedcommuters and those with special needs.Stations and stops are designed for the visu-ally impaired. As the MyCiTi service ex-pands its footprint, bringing universally ac-cessible public transport to more and morepeople, so the total dependency on Dial-a-

Ride for mobility will be reduced and elimi-nated for many eligible Dial-a-Ride users,”he says.According to Herron the service is subsi-

dised in part by the Western Cape Govern-ment.“Because of budget limits, funds have to

be spent as wisely and efficiently as possi-ble, and in a way that allows us to providea transport service to asmany eligible userspossible,” he says.“We try, within ourmeans, to assist those

residents who cannot make use of conven-tional public transport services.”Herron says the majority of the current

users complied with the reassessment re-quirement, safe for 170 people who refusedthe assessment. They are part of the groupwho protested against the service on Thurs-day 28 April.“Unfortunately we cannot allow this situ-

ation to continue. It is unfair to the morethan 2000 users who have been assessed andto other people with special needs who des-perately need the service and are on thewaiting list to be accommodated.“They will be given three months to get

assessed,” he warns.“Furthermore, approximately 45 people

are still making use of the service, irrespec-

tive of the fact that they have beenassessed by an occupational ther-apist and found to be able to makeuse of conventional public trans-port. They were also part of thegroup who protested. We cannotallow this situation to continue. They will have three months tofind an alternative transport sys-tem.”According to Links this deci-

sionwill seemanydisabled peoplewho are dependant on crutchesending up without transport.“We are aware of complaints

about the appointment of the newvehicle operating company ... andhave thus placed a penalty systemin place to impose financial penal-ties on the operator should theyfail to provide the service at thehigh standards set by the City.”TheCity’s contractwith the pre-

vious vehicle operating companycame to an end after a three-yearcontract period, afterwhich a newcontractor, HG Travel, was ap-pointed in December 2015.“This contract is governed by

the same procurement legislationthat governs the awarding of allcontracts, stipulating that a con-tract runs for no more than three

years and is awarded following a competi-tive tender process,” says Herron.Herron says they informed all of the users

about this change.“Contrary to what is being claimed by

some of the Dial-a-Ride users, the effortsmade by the City and the restructuring ofthe contract have meant that the providerhas been able to provide more trips and as-sisted more users than the previous vehicleoperating company was able to,” he claims.Herron bases this on the fact that 1000

more passenger trips were done in the firstfivemonths of thenewoperator takingover, being 32 941.“In addition we have also managed to in-

crease the capacity for specifically wheel-chair users from 72 to 102 under the newcontract – a significant improvement inaccess,” he says, but fails to address thelonger routes and delays users complainedabout. He added that they will investigate all

complaints and, if need be, address thesewith the new service provider.V Dial-A-Ride users can report complaints to theTransport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63.Complainants will be issued with a reference num-ber and will receive feedback once the complainthas been investigated.

Voornemendepleegouers of persone wat hul woning as

Plastic is inevitable. It’s not the enemy– we are.World renowned Belgian artist Will-

iamSweetlove reckons aworldwithout plas-tic is no longer possible.“The problem isn’t the plastic itself, but

the fact that people burn it and throw it intothe sea,” he says.He brings this conservation message

home in a whimsical yet compelling exhibi-tion of neo-pop sculptures, which opened atthe Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gar-den on Wednesday.Labelled “Water Wars”, the exhibition

tells the story of mankind’s war with water.By 2025, one in three people will live with

absolute water scarcity, according to thefood and agriculture organisation of theUnited Nations.“Yet, the excesses of humanity are threat-

ening our natural resources,” he says.Sweetlove’s sculptures are made from re-

cycled plastic from landfills and transformordinary animals and objects into iconic fig-ures. His unique works of art have chal-lenged people to become environmentalthinkers for close to 50 years through morethan 600 exhibitions worldwide. It is not difficult to see why.The pieces are bold and playful, but defi-

nitely make you think. More than 60 red, blackandwhitepenguinspositionedor rath-er installed in the Vlei Garden, for example, draw the attention to the impending short-age of clean drinking water.“They have water bottles tied to their

backs suggesting a survival measure, andface the mountain in an almost pleadingfashion – pleading for fresh water.”At the Old Dam, the Fisherman-hunter

sculpture speaks to our dwindling ocean re-

sources. “In order for the fisherman to sur-vive, he eats less and therefore has shrunk. As there is no fish left in the ocean, he hasnow become a hunter.”In addition to his solo work sculpture,

Sweetlove has worked collaboratively withother artists for more than 20 years as amember of the CrackingArt Group, foundedin 1983 in northern Italy. Their collectivework calls attention to environmental andsocial issues. One suchpoignant installationshows the plight of the turtles in Venice asthey try to escape the canals that keep themfrom reaching the ocean. The founder of theCapeTownArtAgency,

Dirk Durnez, who collaborated with Sweet-love and Sanbi (South African National Bio-diversity Institute) on the exhibition, saysthe exhibition aims to create a change ofmindset about conservation – especially inyoung people. The exhibition will continue at Kirsten-

bosch until 11 June, then journey throughSouth Africa, ending in Pretoria.Karl Stouthuysen, Belgian consul to Cape

Town, officiated the exhibition. He said initiatives like this stress the need

for ecological awareness.“Water is most precious for all creatures

great and small.”

Vandalism of fire hydrants in informalhousing areas poses an immediatesafety risk to those who live there.

Much damagewas caused in aWallacede-ne shack fire last week Tuesday afternoon, when fire services battled to find aworkingfire hydrant. The cause of the fire is not certain, but

according to proportional city councillor,Roxanne Hoorn, the small fire that brokeout in one shack very quickly spread to de-stroy about five or six other shacks, displac-ing many families. At a subcouncil meeting held the follow-

ing day subcouncil chairman Grant Twiggpeppered officials from fire and rescue ser-vices with questions relating to the prob-lem. According to an official representingthe department, fire hydrants in the in-formal areas often represent problems.“If it is not the brass fittings that are sto-

len to be sold for cash, hydrants simply ‘dis-appear’ as new shacks are built around

them or even over them,” he said. For the same reason repair teams often

can’t find fire hydrants for maintenancepurposes.“And the oneswe domaintain get vandal-

ised on an ongoing basis. At one point wereplaced the brass fittings with plastic, butfound that this was not a durable option.”“Due to this we always call for extra wa-

ter tankers to accompany the fire trucks tofires in areas such as Wallacedene, but onthis occasion the water tankers arrivedlate, causing a delay,” he said.Twigg was adamant that new creative so-

lutions had to be found to address the prob-lem.“The City has to come up with ways to

secure water infrastructure in the sameway it secures electrical infrastructure. Moreover, we have to identify all the prob-lems we face in this regard in order to ad-dress it.”

. In the early hours of Sunday morninganother shack fire broke out, this time inthe neighbouring Bloekombos, where fourpeople died.

No water for fires

The Rent-A-Cop programme in Kraaifon-tein is paying off, thanks to ward allocationfunding towards the appointment of dedi-cated law enforcement officers in the area. There are currently two rent-a-cops who

operate in ward 7 and two who operate inward 8.During themonthofApril alone, the rent-

a-cops in these two wards received and at-tended to 28 complaints, issued 28 fines, andconducted 43 operational interventions and102 hot-spot patrols.“The rent-a-cops are doing an amazing

job and this is money well spent to ensurethat Kraaifontein is a safer place to live. Iam currently assisting with morning pa-trols in Northpine at 05:00 every morning

as part of my contribution to safeguardingthe Northpine neighbourhood,” said theCity’s Bergdal subcouncil chairperson,Grant Twigg.Rent-a-cops work with the existing law

enforcement officers and meet with wardcouncillors bi-weekly to discuss operation-almatters and crime intelligence for the ar-ea. Hotspot areas have been identified andare patrolled on a daily basis.Their duties include issuing notices with

regard to dog complaints, warning notices, attending to general complaints, removingloiterers, making arrests and dealing withunlicensed motor vehicles, parking on redlines, parking on sidewalks, and parking indisabled bays, among others.

net Huis Jabes kanbied.

“Nadat hul gesta-biliseer is, word hul-le by programme in-geskakel om hul self-vertroue enmenswaardigheid opte bou. Hul verbeterhul ouerskapsvaar-dighede, bekom ’n in-

Huis Jabes ’n laaste, veilige vesting

Daar is gevalle vankinders wat hul maslaan, want hulledink dis normaal.“

The construction of Cheré Botha’snew school in Meerlust Street, OakGlen, Bellville is progressing well

with most of the earthmoving havingbeen completed and the laying of founda-tions now in progress. The planned completion date for the

project is April 2017 and the school ishoping tomove in during July next year.Nick Davies, the chairman of the

Project Steering Committee, is thrilledwith the progress. “As a parent and amember of the Cheré Botha SGB I cannottell you how happy we all are aboutCheré Botha’s new home. Our educatorshave really been battling to run a schoolon three different remote sites. To havea single location where we can all be to-gether in a custom designed school withthe correct facilities is incredibly excit-ing. To have been given this beautiful

site in such a lovely and friendly suburbis the cherry on top. Our children are go-ing to love it here.”He went on to say how grateful Cheré

Botha is to their new neighbours whohave had to put upwith a lot of inconven-ience in the early stages of the construc-tion.“The heavy machinery and the sand

have made life unpleasant for our neigh-bours and we would like to thank themfor their patience and understanding.”One positive aspect of the construction

work is that the contractors are requiredto use a certain percentage of the locallabour force and anyone interested inworking on the project should get intouch with Coenie Lourens, the commu-nity liaison officer.V Interested parties can contact him on021 839 5186

So het my ma altyd haar kinders

waarsku: Moenie oor daardie brug stapnie. Wees versigtig as jy by daardiekruising stilhou.

Minute later is ek sonder my geld,

verontagsaam?

loop? Ja. Moes ek, by nabetragting, eerder ’n ander roete gekies het? Jip.Is my gevoel van veiligheid onder my

In hierdie stadium sien ek almal as

verdagtes.Maar ek hoop hierdie ervaring sal my

– Brenden Ruiter

I read the article “Laat ge-stremdes se parkeerplekkeoop”, TB, 18 May, with greatinterest, and agree wholeheart-edly that the fraudulent use ofdisabled parking bays must bepunished and the drivers finedheavily.I am a healthy, able-bodied

59-year-old. My husband and Imoved to Durbanville about ayear ago, with my 87-year-oldmother who suffers fromsevere osteoporosis, and canonly walk if she wears a backbrace, uses her walking stickand uses a shop basket trolleyfor support. She does not need to go out

often, as we provide all herneeds, but every now and then,it’s just nice to see the worldoutside her room, and this isnever for long, as she tiresquickly. On recommendation of our

doctor, we applied for adisabled parking disc when westill lived on the AtlanticSeaboard, and were granted ittwice. Her last licence expiredin March of this year, and wehave stopped using it, for fearof getting a fine. A newapplication was made at theDurbanville Traffic Depart-ment. We complied with allrequested documents, but ourapplication was denied. Thereason given that old age isnot a disability, and, since thedoctor stated that she can getin and out of the car unaided, was reason enough not togrant this disc.I was shocked and disap-

pointed. My mother gave updriving her own car some fiveyears ago, due to failingeyesight and troubles with herback: she battles to reversepark and very sensibly feelsthat she should no longerdrive. Thanks to the TrafficDepartment, she will now seeeven less of our new andbeautiful surroundings. We areall so very happy on this sideof “the boerewors-gordyn” butthis left us all bitterly disap-

motor belangstel.

As the popularity of social media sitesand chat groups continues to grow, ex-perts have warned parents to be aware ofa growing trend in cyberbullying.Speaking to parents at a recent public

meeting in Table View, Evan Booyens ofDa Vinci Forensics explains cyberbully-ing is when someone uses the internet, cellphones and other technological devi-ces to sendorpost text or images intendedto hurt, embarrass, threaten, torment, humiliate or intimidate their victim. He says while cyberbullying is ram-

pant in countries likeAmerica, leading tovarious emotional problems in teens andin some cases suicide, South Africanteens were slowly starting to feel the im-pact.Similar to the old fashioned formof bul-

lying, Booyens says various tactics suchas gossip, threats and trickery are usedamong children. However when onlinethese tactics are amplified as the bulliescan now torment others anonymously. In the online space, he says, new tactics

are used and most disturbing is the crea-tionof fake socialmediaprofiles. Here thebully creates a Facebook page or any oth-er form of socialmedia account and posesas their victim, placing embarrassing orfalse posts. In South Africa the most commonly

used social media site is Facebook andBooyens says in most cases girls are theperpetrators.Booyens says the effects on the victim

range from sadness and anxiety to de-

pression, anger and in some cases, sui-cide.So why is cyberbullying so hurtful? Be-

cause in a digital age, bullying is not fleet-ing. Booyens explains at the top of the listis the permanence of a hurtful post on so-cialmedia. Here the insults, comments orimages can be preserved by the personwho was bullied or others can read orview it again and the harm is reinflictedeach time.Another downfall is that with social

media sites, the bully now has a biggeraudience than just a school hallway orlocker room.According to international studies,

92.6% of teens say cruel behaviour takesplace on Facebook. Booyens says thosesame studies indicate that 65.8% of teensresponded to their bullies of which 35%where personal confrontations.Booyens says while South African

teens were not as hard hit by cyberbully-ing, it’s important for parents to be awareof the potential dangers.“It won’t take that long for our children

to be hit hard by this and it’s already hap-pening on Facebook. There are some sim-ple ways to help prevent it.”First on the list is for parents to have

their children’s social media passwords. He says while teens will complain abouttheir privacy being violated, it is impor-tant for parents to have access tomonitortheir interactions. He says parents should encourage their

children to speak up if they are being bul-lied and should be taught how to blocktheir bullies from their social media ac-counts.

“Dis so ’n mooi, vol taal, amper soos ’n sappigevrug.”

dis net weens Raé se krullerige ha-re,” spot Demi.

nie.Dus sal Demi en Raé Blaai Om

met Vriende op Vrydag 3 Junie enSaterdag 4 Junie by die Café by El-kanah House aanbied.Raé beskryf die groep se musiek

as ontvanklik.

Eight years into the Spur High SchoolsMountain Bike League organisers areanticipating that more than 500 South-

ern African schools will be represented inthe 2016 season, which will run fromMay toOctober.

According to league co-ordinatorMeurantBotha of Amarider, participation at localevents is growing at a steady pace as schoolsaccept mountain biking as a recognisedsport – some going as far as building dedicat-ed tracks on school grounds to encourageafter school practice and interschool sportsdays as well as employing coaches andman-agers to oversee teams.

“The word on the street is that the topteams are in full training mode in prepara-tion for the 2016 season as competition be-comes more intense year on year. To manyriders, it’s not just about hopping onto thebike anymore, but rather honing skills, up-ping the fitness levels and working on themental toughness that is required to followdreams of becoming pro riders,” says Botha.

Although there are many kids findingtheir competitive edge on their bicycles, theSpur Schools Mountain Bike League’s focusis still to encourage “more kids on bikes, more schools in action”. It is important forall children to enjoy participating, whetheronly starting out or having participated fora few seasons. This year has seen the introduction of

Team Spur, James Reid and Ariane Klein-hans, who play the important role of encour-aging league riders to follow their dreamsand showing the reality of becoming spon-sored athletes. Between competing at theirvarious competitions, they have been min-glingwith keen riders, sharing valuable tipsfrom how to better skills to handling pres-sureand formavital part of theSpurSchoolsMTBLeague as they set the tone as rolemod-els for the young riders. For those new to the Spur Schools Moun-

RUGBY: VARSITY SHIELD AWARD

AVRIL FILLIES

To receive the award as the BacklinePlayer that Rocks of the VarsityShieldwas a bittersweetmoment be-

cause “we just lost to Wits” in the promo-tion-relegation play-off.This is what AidynnCupido (19) of Stel-

lenridge, Bellville, flyhalf of theUniversi-ty of the Western Cape (UWC), said at theend of the Varsity Shield competition for2016. He played as a centre and full-backin all the age groups of Western Province

while a learner at Paul Roos Gymnasi-um in Stellenbosch.

“I never sawmy dad,Wilfred, playcentre for Western Province andWestern Province League. To me hewas just my dad and the coach of the

rugby club Helderberg and all the dif-ferent Sevens teams in the province. Butwhen I started my rugby career, that factadded extra pressure and I told myselfthat I would be in all representativeteams on merit and not because of mydad. “I asked mymom, Levona, about mydad’s playing days and she pulled out ascrapbook of newspaper clippings and ac-

tion pictures that she kept when he wasplaying. Only then I realised why every-one was putting pressure on me to per-form,” he said. His parents attended all his matches

and his dad said it was not necessary forhim to be a centre, he should play in theposition where he was comfortable andwhere he could add value to the team. That was when he switched to fly-half.“As a fly-half you are the general that

controls people around you and you givedirection to the team. As a centre you fol-low directions and carry a lot more ball. The assumption is that anyone can playfly-half because you just receive the ballfrom the scrum-half to kick for territory, but this is way off the mark,” he said.Cupido studies law at UWC and hopes

to sign a contract with one of the provin-ces. “For the next two years UWC will beplaying again in the Varsity Shield andwehave enough time to progress from theShield to take the Varsity Cup. The rea-son I say this is thatwe played against thebest university sides and we discoveredthat we were just not on par with them. With the experience that we gained this

year we can just build on that in the nexttwo years, and then we’ll be a force to bereckoned with.“Currently I am focussing on my stud-

ies because you never know how longyour rugby career would last. When mystudies are done and dusted I would liketo open a sports agency to assist youngtalented players because not all sportagents are truthful to you. With my legalbackground I would be able to help theplayers,” said Aidynn. He is coached by former Springboks

Chester Williams and Bolla Conradie atUWC. According to him Bolla is an inspi-rational coach.“When I amnot playing rugby or study-

ing I read novels and watch television se-ries with the family, like NCIS, Blindspotand Gordon Ramsay. My dad and I talka lot about rugby but mymom is more in-to my academic career. I have two sib-lings, Ammin (14)who is at Paul Roos andAimee, who is at Rhenish Girls High.“My message to young players is that

youmust have a goal and you are the onlyonewho can stop you fromachieving thatgoal,” said Aidynn.

Slegs by vier geleenthede in vanjaar se

reeks is minder as 23 doele in ’n wedstrydafgestaan.

Groot opwinding wag in netbal-halfeindstryd
