    VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1

taal neem.

donker prentjie geskets oor hoe Owen dood

    is.

Kleinvlei-polisiestasie. Vir my het hulle ge-

s hulle sal bereid wees om in n hof te ge-

    tuig.

Bradley buite Mfuleni opgetel. Hoe op aarde

is dt moontlik? wou Owen weet.

Ons wag net vir die doktersverslag, dan

vat ons dit vandaar. Ons gaan dit nie net los

nie. As hulle hom net toegesluit het, was dit

    n ander saak.

    val uitgespreek.

Pedestrians are very important to the city.

This is the reason they launched their Pe-

destrian Safety Campaign on 26 September,

to get into gear for the international Trans-

    port Month of October.

In a statement the city stated that they

hoped the drive would reach the intended

    two million residents.

The drive is in line with a United Nations

(UN) initiative, over a decade, to take action

to increase road safety. This initiative is

called the Decade of Action on Road Safety,

and 2013 is the year dedicated to pedestri-

    ans, the statement said.

Last year alone 373 pedestrians died on

the citys roads, as per a departmental pa-

    thology report.

This figure represents 57 % of the total

road traffic fatalities in the city making pe-

destrians themost vulnerable road users by

far, Brett Herron, of the city said.

    TransportMonth inCapeTownprovides

an opportunity to become involved in a

campaign that can actually save the lives of

friends, family, fellow residents and for us

to be alert and be safe, he said.

The city has formulated a Road Safety

Strategywhich focuses the start of thismas-

sive campaign under seven goals, it said.

This includes assessing the safety at in-

tersections, using freeway notice boards to

    communicate with road users, educating

road users to change their behaviour on or

besides roads, emphasising safe road user

behaviour, safe road infrastructure and ve-

hicles, as well as supplying information to

    loved ones after accidents.

The campaign officially started on Friday

with Herrons first school visit to Erica Pri-

    mary in Belhar.

    by n plaaslike Kleinvlei-huiswinkel ge-

waak teen vuurwerk wat by huiswinkels

was reeds effens beter met TygerBurger se

    besoek.

Sheila se man, Daniel, s die onwettige

klapperverkope moet end kry voordat ie-

mand selfs ng seerder kry. Dis baie ge-

was reeds vyf keer by die dokter.

tig is of nie, s Sharon.

    afvat enhulle n boete gee,maardiekinders

skiet nog steeds (klappers), s Sheila.

En die prentjie raak al gevaarliker. Shei-

Hy is baie, baie ge-

    lukkig.

Die Stad is baie duidelik oor die onwetti-

ge skiet van vuurwerk. Daarword elke jaar

    skeie wetstoepassingsverteenwoordigers

span saam deur sigbare polisiring en pa-

    trollies te doen.

A local learners dreams are a little closer

to coming true after he was chosen as one

of the 2013 ACT, DALRO, Nedbank Per-

    forming Arts Scholarship winners.

Arlin Bantam, from Forest Heights in

Kuils River is aGrade 12 learner at The Set-

tlers High School, which is where he heard

about the national competition which is

run by the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT)

together with the Dramatic, Artistic and

    LiteraryRightsOrganisation (DALRO)and

    Nedbank.

Its very well publicised in our school,

Arlin explains, adding that the school has

finalists in the competition almost every

year. This year they had two with Grade 12

learner, Michaela Moses also making it to

    the finals of the competition.

Arlin came second, earning himself a

scholarship to study performing arts at a

tertiary institution of his choice, starting

    2014.

He is the first winner from The Settlers

    High School since 2009.

Arlin says he started preparing for his

audition in June, a month before the time.

At the end of July he got the good news that

he had made it through to the finals.

I was pretty ecstatic, he says.

After that you start choosing yourmate-

    rial, he says.

Arlin was one of six finalists chosen out

of 350 to perform at a gala concert at the

    University of Johannesburg Arts Centre

last week, where he had to present a mono-

logue, a song and a dance routine.

The finalists also performed a group

    number choreographed by The Forgotten

    Angle Theatre Collaborative.

Arlin flew up to Johannesburg on 24 Sep-

tember to start preparing for the finalswith

    a team of dedicated coaches.

Our creative team was an amazing

group of people, Arlin says, adding that he

was excited to work with known names

    like artistic director Jacques Bessenger.

Between rehearsing, Arlin says the final-

ists also got a chance to soak up the drama

at the university and even catch a play or

two. It was mind blowing, he says.

The other two winners for this years

competition are Naledi Majola from Kwa-

Zulu-Natal and Kamogelo Nche from Gau-

    teng.

A church in Kuils River wants to take a

stand against all social and other evils per-

    vading the community here.

For this reason, the Kuils River Apostol-

ic Church is hosting a prayermarch initia-

tive on Sunday 13 October at 15:00.

They are calling on all Christians and

churches in the Kuils River area to unite

in prayer, with themarch starting and end-

ing at the Sarepta Civic Centre.

We will be marching for restoring the

dignity of the Kuils River community and

    re-establishing the visibility of the

    church, said Oscar Hoffmeester, the

    churchs apostle leading the march.

The other aims of themarch is to revive

home and family life and marriage as an

institution, and to restore safety to the

community by relying on God to do the

    healing.

We are standing against abuse, drug

    abuse, alcohol abuse and gangsterism.

This will be the second march of the

year and we believe its significance is that

God wants to bring total restoration to our

    community, he said.

The apostle believes that the country as

awhole needs a stabilising voice, and that

stabilising voice is the voice of God,

through the vehicle of the church.

He said he believes that the church is the

direct representation of God, and, as such,

needed to claim responsibility for the spi-

ritual climate of the community and the

    city at large.

Hoffmeester said the purpose of the

church included taking charge of the spiri-

tual side of things, but also to restore relief

and morale, and to reflect oneness with

    Christ.

Also to reach the lost at any cost and

    to relate to each other.

There be safe parking and security for all

    cars during the march.

    hul wonings inwaai.

Mev.

    huidige boubedrywighede bydie nuwewin-

    kelkompleksdaarnabydiemolle indaardie

sel daar onlangsnagegaan enherstel is soos

Suzette Puren was duidelik in haar ant-

plante.

    kom kuier, moet hierin vaskyk.

lente nou eers kop uitsteek.Wat dit selfs ng

mooier maak, is dat die hele gemeenskap

    van die Zevenzicht-landgoed saamgewerk

    het aan di kleurvolle skepping.

Een van Zevenzicht se (hoof)kenmerke is

sy kleurvolle en goed instandgehoude tuine.

Waar tuine vernuwe word, word waterwys-

plante soos vygies, proteas en aalwyne aange-

    plant, s Piet Steyn, landgoedbestuurder.

Aangesien baie jong mense in Zevenzicht

    groentetuintjie ookaangel waarkinders

kan sien hoe n tamatieplant, slaai en

    kruie lyk.

Ouers word aangemoedig om vir die

kinders te leer hoe verskillende groentes

    lyk, s hy.

    inwoners.

Daar is n wonderlike meelewing van in-

woners om n veilge en aangenamewoonom-

gewing te help skep, s Piet.

Inwoners verfraai tuine, parkie in Kuilsrivier

    maak soms foute

Life is by no means easy and

yes we are all striving for

    acceptance in this world. But

my question to all is: What

    would life be like without

    community?

    I personally believe that

    community brings forth togeth-

    erness, through community we

all become as one. Each indi-

vidual is a link to his or her

    own community. For myself

and my family we are a part of

    the Kraaifontein community.

    No matter what the communi-

ty you might be a part of, its a

known fact that in your very

    own community, I believe that

there are those in need of a

    helping hand those who are

    silenced by their struggles.

Many times we are aware of

those who are hurting, due to

them maybe living close in our

reach, but yet we bluntly turn

our heads in the other direc-

tion. All Im saying is it takes

one person to rise up and be

    that difference, yes it only

takes one person with a willing

    heart to create a community

    chain reaction of many helping

    hands.

    What would community be

like, if not for those that have a

    giving heart? Today I personal-

ly want to commend all those

    precious people out their who

are already part of the differ-

ence and to those that are not I

do want to encourage to join in.

    Think of those who are

    hurting due to their struggles,

    whether it be financially,

    emotionally or even physically

    and remind yourself that it

    could have been me.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Bok-taak nie

    gering, maar

    togmoontlik

Nog n rugby-kampioenskap is iets van

die verlede, en wr moes die Springbok-

ke tweede viool speel teen die All Blacks.

Saterdag se nederlaag op Ellispark was

    bitter moeilik vir elke Bok-ondersteuner

om te verwerk. Ons het dan soveel hoop

    vir di tuisveld-kragmeting gehad!

Die tyd het dus aangebreek vir die

Bokke se afrigtingspan om n opname te

doen oor die ooglopende swak plekke in

sy span se mondering, anders gaan ons

in die toekoms maar net weer dieselfde

    vernedering smaak.

Dit verg geen kenner om die volgende

te besef nie: die Bokke se verdediging

    was skrikwekkend swak; hulle voorspe-

die Bokke by die afbreekpunte balle by

    die dosyne afgestaan.

Dit is die dringendste kwessies waar-

aan Heyneke Meyer en kie. sal moet

    aandag skenk.

Daar is wel darem ook n postiewe

kant.

    groot skool in 2014.

Die meeste mense hoop om suksesvolle

en bevredigende loopbane te volg. Ongeluk-

    praktyk in Eersterivier behartig.

    dom reeds baie belangrik.

    kennis, s hy.

Weyers het aan TygerBurger n vraelys

verskafwat hy s saamgestel is deur n groep

professionele kundiges op die gebied van

    kinderontwikkeling.

goeie idee kry hoe goed jou kind voorberei

is vir formele onderrig op skool.

Indien daar by jou twyfel bestaan oor eni-

    paslike professionele hulp verkry, meen

    hy.

sepsie. Dit is in eenvoudige taal geskryf en

ouers kandi toetsie self enmet gemak saam

    met hul gr. R-kind doen.

    kan Weyers kontak by 021 909 0600.

Talent does not look at age when it comes

    to having what it takes.

    70-year-old Olaf Roberg from Bothasig

proved this after hewon the Forever Young

MusicCompetition at the end of September.

The competition held at Ferrymans Tav-

ern in the V&A Waterfront was tough and

exhausting, but Roberg pushed through to

    wow the audience.

And TygerBurger found out what makes

    him tick.

I fell in lovewithmusicwhen Imet a few

friends in Carletonville. Hansie Roodt from

Johannesburg as well as Dirkie Smit and

Theo Erasmus from Randburg along with

myself played in a little band at Die Boere-

    plaas every Saturday, he said.

This was in the early 1970s.

    Whenmywife and Imoved toCapeTown

I started listening to Elvis, Roy Orbison,

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Nat King

Cole. I also liked the country songs by Wil-

lie Nelson and Glen Campbell, he added.

And from there it was magic.

I used to go to bop-sessions as they were

called in those days and we played in halls

and also in churches. But, then for over 40

I did not pick up the old guitar for gigs.

I only played at family braais or when

    we went camping with friends.

In July my sister-in-law told me about

a singing talent competition for people over

the age of 40 years. The elimination process

took place over eight weeks, but at first, I

was very hesitant to enter the competi-

    tion, he said.

    Eventually his children persuaded him

and he entered the competition on the last

    day.

I did it just for fun, he said.

This fun then got him into the semi-final

and he was one of six contestants to go

    through to the final round.

I had a few songs to choose from for the

final, but I decided to challenge myself and

try out a new song, he said.

He chose to sing Blueberry Hill and

Bad Moon Rising by Creedance Clearwa-

    ter Revival.

I was a little nervous, but once I got on

the stage I was in my element, he said.

Next was the shock of when hewas called

out as the winner of the competition.

It was such a surprise. I won an eight-

hour recording session and a neat micro-

    phone and headphones, he added.

Even though he hadnt played for years

his fingers found the beat to the music of

his guitar. People of my age should never

be afraid to try new things. When we listen

to music from our age, seeing people we

know performing, it reminds us of our past

and the lives we lived from the 50s on-

    wards, he said.

Never too old to wow crowd

Olaf Roberg might be 70 years old but he has

a raw talent which inspires young artists to

follow in his steps. PHOTO: TINA BURGER

    T

he city has invited the public to

come and frolic in its public

    swimmingpools as these ameni-

ties recently opened ahead of sum-

    mer.

Safety remains a priority at the

    citys public swimming pools, which

opened on 1 October, Wilfred Solo-

    mons-Johannes of the city said.

He said the Sport, Recreation and

    Amenities Department made every

effort to ensure facilities were ready

    for the public.

In summer fans can visit most of

the swimming pools from 10:00 and

    17:00, or from08:00 to 17:00 onparticu-

    larly hot days, he said.

    Over onemillion people visited the

citys 35 swimming pools during the

    last summer season a record

    number, with no drownings record-

ed, the statement said. But theyre

    taking no chances.

    Lifeguards

The City has intensified safety ar-

    rangements at all public swimming

pools. In this respect, the city has

over 200 lifeguards on duty for the

    summer.

Wewould like to appeal to all pool

users to obey the instructions and

guidance of lifeguards and city staff.

A lifeguards most important role is

    the prevention of drowning inci-

dents, but they also serve to teach

    pool users about water safety.

    Our municipal pools should be

    places of funand recreation without

    any fear of irresponsible behaviour

that can place other bathers at risk,

    said the citys Belinda Walker.

There will also be Learn to Swim

    programmes hosted across Cape

    Town again.

    Many people are prevented from

learning to swim due to a lack of ac-

cess to swimming pools. The city is

    committed to providing increased ac-

cess to swimming pools aswell aswa-

    ter education programmes, Walker

    said.

    Rules

    Residents were urged to follow

    these rules:

    VNo alcohol or banned substances

may be brought into the facility.

    VNoglass containers are allowed in

    the facility.

VNo weapons of any kind are al-

    lowed on the premises.

VNo running or horse-play is al-

lowed in and around the pool.

VNo dunking or diving off other

    peoples shoulders is allowed.

VNo ball games are allowed in or

    outside the pool area.

VNo pets may be brought into the

    facilities.

    VNo tents or similar structures

may be brought into the facilities.

VNo one may push others into the

    pool.

    VParents should not leave their

    children unattended at pools.

The city wanted to remind parents

that no children under the age of sev-

en will be allowed to enter any of the

    swimmingpoolswithout supervision

(of someoneat least 18 years or older).

    Parents or guardians who accom-

pany the children to the citys swim-

ming pools should not leave the chil-

dren on their own and then leave the

    facilities, the city said.

    ming pools, please visit http://www.cape

Blackstoneradio talk about their new music video on the Orange Couch.

    Blackstoneradios hearts

    set on SweetMary Jane

    LOUISA STEYL

    @lounotes

    Local band, Blackstoneradio, have recently

released a new music video for their song

    Sweet Mary Jane.

The music video tells the story of three

guys who fall for the same girl.

At the end, the three of us run up to her

house and when we see her, we realise that

shes still in school, and then we all run

away, explains Dylan Haskin, the bands

    drummer.

It feels like a sort of Something about

Mary kind of vibe, adds JC Malengret, the

    bands vocalist.

Its important to not take the video seri-

ously, bassist, Trevor Edwards points out,

adding: Its just meant for a laugh.

The video was shot by Troy Davies of Ret-

royspective, who also helped the band by

shooting the video for free. Sweet Mary

Jane is the second single off the bands de-

but album, Out of Rock, which also shows

a different side of the band who usually de-

scribe their music as hard rock.

Its clean hard rock, with as little effects

as possible on the voices, on the instru-

ments, JC explains, adding: Its only a

four piece, no rhythm, so its just very

    clean.

Were busy exploring the acoustic guitar

or classic guitar, says guitarist Francois

Louw. Sweet Mary Jane was a song we

sort of tried off the cuff, but it happened to

    work, he says.

Since then we havent realigned the mu-

sic that we are writing, its still rock, but

    we are exploring, Francois explains.

    Previouslywe didnt thinkwe could pull

off classic acoustic rock tunes, butwe think,

we hope, that Sweet Mary Jane, has

proved it differently, he says, adding: We

are definitely trying more ballad type mu-

sic, but there will still be some nice Tyson-

    hitting gems in between.

    Blackstoneradio say they have Gumtree

to thank for starting the band as they found

    each other through online ads.

Blackstoneradio started in 2008 in a ga-

rage in Bellville, like most good South Afri-

can bands, Francois says, quickly adding:

Like most good South African bands, we

didnt know what the hell we were doing.
