Haar bure en vriende sê sy is die vrouwat nooit huiwer om ’n helpende handna ander uit te hou nie. En juis daar-

om is sy gekies as een van die moeders vandie gemeenskap deur TygerBurger en RadioTygerberg.

“Helen het gesê dis Radio Tygerberg toedie foon lui. Ek het toe nie geweet wat aan-gaan nie,” sê Sarie Ralph, ’n merkwaardigevrou uit die Kuilsrivier-gemeenskap.

Met soveel sjarme en met ’n baie beskeiepersoonlikheid, glo Sarie dat sy glad nie ver-dien het om genomineer te word nie.

Helen Geldenhuys, wat Sarie genomineerhet, beskryf haar as ’n vrou wat nooit terug-staan as sy hoor iemand het hulp nodig nie.

StruikelblokkeSarie vertel van baie struikelblokke wat

sy ervaar het in haar lewe – van geldelikeprobleme tot terugslae toe sy haar seun ver-loor het en haar dogter in ’n motorongelukwas. Sy sê sy het besef God sal haar deur al-les dra en sy kan net teruggee deur uit tehelp. Sy beskryf hoe sy ’n klein seuntjielangs die pad sien slaap het en onmiddellikgestop het om vir hom kos te gee. Sy moedigook altyd haar bure aan om hul ou kleding-

stukke vir die minderbevoorregtes te skenk.“My huis was al op ’n tyd vol sakke klere vanmense wat dit aan die armes gee.”

Sarie se dogter, Debbie, was jare gelede in’n ongeluk, wat breinskade veroorsaak het.Sy sê die dood van haar seun en haar dogterse ongeluk het haar swaar getref, maar syhet moed bymekaar geskraap en geglo datals met ’n doel gebeur.

Abigail Franse, een van die verpleegsterswat na Debbie omsien, sê Sarie is waarlik’n liefdevolle mens en luister altyd as jy ’nprobleem het. Helen vertel dat Sarie baiekeer die skouer was waarop sy kon huil. “Syis waarlik vir my ’n moeder, omdat ek nie

nou een het nie,” sê Helen.

Sarie sê die glimlag op mense se gesigteas hulle ’n ordentlike bord kos kry, betekenals vir haar.

Sy het ’n besluit gemaak om geen Kersge-skenke vir familielede meer te gee nie, maarskenk eerder sop, brood en klere met Kers-fees. “Ek wil graag eendag my eie sopkom-buis hê. Ek glo daardie vroue doen regtigbaie,” sê sy.

members of the group, “Die Realiteit”speaks about his music, elements of hardwork, passion and struggle simultaneouslycome through. He adds: “Our music is a re-flection of life stories.”This bred and born 24-year-old fromKalk-

fontein who forms part of “Die Realiteit”gave up a life of luxury he could have ledto extend a helping hand to the communi-ties who are close to him.He previously studied computer engi-

neering and worked fixing computers, butlost his job. Through that he startedwritingmusic which reflects his life experiencesand that of those around him.Christopher, together with his fellow

member, XolisaDuda started this group notonly entertaining communities, but alsohelping upcoming artists through work-shops. “We not only wanted to perform, butwanted to give back by educating in thecommunity,” Christopher says.They describe their music as stories that

are to the point and no nonsense pure hip-hop.From park jams, to performing at shows

to getting a bit of exposure and by helpingupcoming artists create a platform forthemselves, these two took to heart the needthey saw and decided to extend a helpinghand.Their hip-hop workshops, form part of

seeing first-hand what violence and drugscan do, he makes it his business to speakout in the community.Duda also strongly believes that when

you see something that is not right, you areobliged to speak out and not just sit backand watch.They describe the obstacles they faced in-

cluding finances and administration. “Allthe money we generate from shows goes in-to sound and into our group,” Duda says.Both Christopher and Duda are hoping to

enrol in Stellenbosch this coming year to goand study.“In order for us to be rolemodels for these

kids we need to lead by example, by hittingthe books,” Christopher says.

Local initiatives will benefit from the globalspotlight in 2014, the year Cape Town will beWorld Design Capital (WDC).

Richard Perez, 2014 WDC director, saidthe WDC aims to exemplify and honour cit-ies that have recognised the importance ofdesign as a leading development tool.

He spoke at the Table Mountain Cablewaypremises last week, when Andrea Crous,Ward 70 councillor and residents visited thecableway as part of an informative sessionabout the WDC.

The World Design Capital title is awardedin advance, allowing winning cities suffi-cient time to plan, develop and promote a

year-long programme ofWorld Design Capital-themedevents for their designatedyear.

This title gives Cape Towna chance to showcase itsachievements and aspira-tions of design-led events andactivities.

A public call for potentialWorld Design Capital 2014projects was made at the endof February that focus on projects that high-light how design can be used to transformlives.

On the WDC website, it states that al-though projects will not necessarily be fund-

ed, successful projects willbenefit from being promotedextensively by Cape Town De-sign, both at home andabroad, under the prestigiousWorld Design Capital 2014banner.

Richard said oneof the aimsis to promote and encouragethe use of design, to furthersocial, economic and culturaldevelopment of the world’s

cities.“As a result, we expect to attract invest-

ment, stimulate new partnerships and gainvisibility as a centre for creativity and inno-vation. We want to improve the quality of

life in the city,” Perez said.According to Perez, a big element of the

WDC is legacy.“It is about communicating designs to citi-

zens, using design principals and design net-works,” said Richard.

He said 20 years into democracy a dividestill exists in the city. “Can design help usclose that divide?” he asked.

Sabrine Lehmann, CEO of Cape Town Ca-bleway, spoke about this popular tourist at-traction.

She said it was an average day at the cable-way. “On a windy day zero people will go upthe mountain and on other days 7 000 peoplewill go up,” she said. “In 2012, a total of831 000 went on the cableway,” said Sabrine.

Since the start of June, dozens of stray an-imals have been admitted to the Cape ofGood Hope (CoGH) SPCA in Grassy Park.

“It’s a direct result of the winter weath-er when storms frighten animals causingthem to flee their homes,” says SPCAspokesperson Lamees Martin.

Losing a much-loved pet and worryingif your dog or cat is alive and well is ahugely stressful experience.

“Visit us to personally check if your petis at the SPCA because even if you livesome distance from Grassy Park, we doreceive animals from all over the greaterCape Town area, even from as far as thenorthern suburbs and Boland areas,”said Margie Ainscow, animal centremanager at the CoGH SPCA.

If stray animals are not claimed fromthe SPCA in 10 days, they are put up foradoption. A release fee of R350 is chargedwhen an animal is claimed. This includesa microchip and an identity tag as wellas the cost incurred if the animal had tobe collected by an SPCA inspector.

Microchipping is an option available topet owners, which helps ensure that find-ing a lost pet is more than possible. A mi-crochip is a grain size chip that is pain-lessly inserted under the skin of an ani-mal and when read by a scanner, willprovide the owner’s details and contactnumbers. It’s a simple non-invasive pro-cedure that could turn your lost pet intoa found one.

The large number of animals admittedto the society has placed tremendouspressure on their pet food supplies andthey are therefore in dire need of food tofeed the almost 400 cats and dogs current-ly in their care.

When intuition, anticipation andconcentration merge, JakeMontandon twirls into the air.

And while suspended in the midair, thechampion freerider uses his jet ski to pulloff the most eye-catching moves imagina-ble.

All too soon he would plummet back tothe unforgiving waves below.

On the Montalivet beach the predomi-nantly French crowd goes wild, but Jakestays focused.

The 29-year-old freerider from TableView wants to be the best in the world, butcoming second isn’t half bad!

Needless to saywhenhe claimed the run-ner-up spot in France this month he re-turned home as a hero.

ThirdJake finished third in the 2012 IFWAFre-

eride World Championship Tour, and if heconsistently performs at this rate, otherswill soon be measured by his high stand-ards.

The World Tour comprises three inter-national rounds a year of which France isthe first. During these rounds competitorscompete in a head-to-head double elimina-tion format, while a panel of judges scoresthem 50 % for their wave surfing and 50 %for their aerial manoeuvres.TygerBurger caught up with jet-setter

Jake to hearmore about his latest achieve-ment and this audacious sport.

“This was the last championship of theguywho came first, so even though I’mcur-

rently second on the log, I will basically begoing into the next competition with themost points,” he explains.

Jake has come a long way since he firststarted freeriding at the age of 12 while heworked for a jet ski rental company.

A fellow competitor once said: “Thesport of jet ski freeride alone is best definedby taking the world’s best surfing contest,theworld’s bestmotocross freestyle tricks,and blending them all together to create anintense and exciting sport.”

VariationsYouTube is full of of clips of people doing

flips, turns and other gravity-defyingtricks. Jake knows all of these and mighteven have come up with a couple himself.

“There are so many different variationsout there. The Madonna flips, one-hand-one-foot, the can cans, the super-flips...And then we are also judged on normalsurfing, such as big slashes off the top ofthe lip and things like that,” says Jake, add-ing his favourite is probably the Madonnaflip.

He had to pay to get this good – eitherin time, sweat or ligament-wellness.

“I’ve been in and out of the doctor’srooms lots of times: ankles, back, shoul-ders, teeth... at least I still haveall of them!”

When he is not at the doctor’s room,you’ll probably find him preparing in thegym or flirting with the waves.

He concludes: “On the waves timing iseverything. One has to improvise, thinkquickly and find the trick that works best.You’re up against Mother Nature, youknow!”

Gambate in Japanese translates to per-severance – something that HenryBosman and Neill Bruce learned all

too well in their three-month tenure in To-kyo. Now, back home in their beloved coun-try, the Bellville boys are reflecting on aonce-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Let me tell you, it was tough. We were un-der no illusion that it would be a walk in thepark, but boy were we in for a surprise.

“We were based at the Honbu dojo whichis the international headquarters for Ky-okushin-kan karate. Our day would startwith the cleaning of the dojo and after thatwe would have intensive training.

On a another note, the Japanese eat ricemorning noon and night and surprisinglynot as many fish as you would think. It’squite expensive over there,” said Henry.

Neill reflects on the many intensive ses-sions they had. “You don’t ever fear that youare in pain. On Tuesdays we had fightingclasses with their u-65kg, u-70kg and u-80kgchampions.”

“Those guys are at another level of tough,sometimes I would take kicks to the leg sothat I can barely stand on it, but somehowyou pull through and only check on your in-juries after the fight.”

“Looking back on it, it made me and Hen-ry so much more tough, not only mentally,but physically as well. We were also in-structed to give some classes to six to 13-year-olds. That was fun and it helped us withour own technique.

“Asyou stand in front of the class teachingthem the various techniques, you have to

constantly check them and yourself to makesure you are doing things correctly.”

BetterSince their return, their balance, under-

standing of this ancient practice and stami-na have improved dramatically.

They have also revised their trainingschedule to keep the intensity high.

“These boys really surprised me. Justlooking at them made me realise that these

are not the same boys that I sent to Japanthree months ago.”

“They are physically, mentally and tech-nically better.”

“I’m excited to see them perform in up-coming tournaments,” said Shihan HennieBosman of the Welgemoed dojo.

Come August, when they will be compet-ing in the Len Barnes Memorial Tourna-ment in Durban, they are sure to be moreprepared for the challenge.

Robben Island’s very own triathlon, the Tri-Rock Robben Island, is back on Saturday 12October and participants are entering fast.

The Tri-Rock offers athletes a unique ex-perience on one of the world’s most famousheritage sites.

Tri-Rock Founder Grant Kunneke expectsthis year’s event to be even better than theinaugural race last year. “Tri-Rock RobbenIsland is not only about honouring the mem-ory of this important piece of our history, itis also about the preservation of the islanditself,” says Kunneke.

The event will include two races – theshorter distance “4:14:4” which will consistof a 400 m swim, 14 km cycle and 4 km run,and the more challenging “8:28:8” which willconsist of an 800 m swim, 28 km cycle and8 km run.

Tri-Rock Robben Island and Robben Is-land Museum are also offering athletes theopportunity to experience the island withaccommodation on the island in one of theprison cells.

Guests will learn more about the prisonthrough a tour with an ex-prisoner and war-den, as well as enjoy dinner and breakfast.
