Lastweek’s bank robbery at the StandardBank in Kuils River was the first of itskind in nearly a decade.

This information was shared with Tyger-Burger recently following lastweek’s brazenattack in the CBD on two of the bank’s per-sonnel and a security guard.Two female bank staff members, as well

as a male security guard, were held up last

week Wednesday shortly after 08:30 whenthe bank was robbed of about R500 000.This incident, one detective told Tyger-

Burger, is the first since August 2005 whenthe FNB in Adderley Street in Cape Townand the Absa in Bellville were attacked. TheFNB attack resulted in a hostage situation,the detective said.The organised crime unit is investigating

lastweek’s attackat StandardBank. It is stillhowever unclear whether a syndicate is be-hind the robbery, the police said.

“The staff was busy opening the bankwhen they noticed three men standing out-side. One of the men followed the one ladyand forced them inside, along with the secu-rity guard.“They went inside and then to the back of

the offices,” Captain Isaac Van Niekerk,Kuils River police spokesperson, said.Once inside, the two accomplices also en-

tered, the police said.“They initially thought the men were nor-

mal clients,” van Niekerk added.

One woman was assaulted when she re-fused to open the bank’s safe. However, noserious injuries have been reported.The three attackers, according to the po-

lice, escaped on foot.An eyewitness, Winston Absolon who

works as a car guard across the road fromthe bank, explained how he saw two menwalking down an alley – each carrying ablack bag supposedly filled with cash they’dstolen from the bank.

the police, must be vigilant and become ac-tive in the fight against crime.”As a deterrent, Payne recommend that

CCTV cameras be installed across the CBD.“This has been discussed in numerous

meetings but the cost implications were justtoo huge.“However I do think with the spike in

crime in the area, we as residents, the busi-ness fraternity and the councillors shouldjoin hands and install these cameras whichwill assist us to help capture the perpetra-tors,” Payne said.

Wanneerhulle asmentors toegerusword,sal hulle ook ’n spesiale inbelsentrum kanskakel waar hulle gratis raad kan ontvang.

Jaun Truter, Alpha-koördineerder by ge-vangenisse in Wes-Kaapland, het gesê daarword beoog om ’n getal van 3 000 voormali-ge gevangenes oor die volgende agtienmaande as mentors toe te rus en te be-kwaam. Die opleidingsprogram, wat be-stuur word deur Alpha en diementor-oplei-dingsorganisasie LifeXchange, word latervanjaar afgeskop by die Versorg-konferen-sie vir voormalige gevangenes.

Paul Cowley, uitvoerende direkteur vandie William Wilberforce-trust, sal die hoof-spreker wees by die konferensie, wat op Sa-terdag 29 November by die Heidekoppie-kerk in Brackenfell plaasvind.

Tans is daar 11 250 gevangenes in Suid-Afrika, wat die negende meeste ter wêreldis. “Altesame 78% van die gevangenes watvrygelaat word, beland binne twee jaarweer agter tralies. Altesame 70% van dieoortreders wat die Alpha-program volg,keer nie weer terug na die gevangenis nie,maarword suksesvol by die samelewing in-geskakel,” het Truter verduidelik.

“Ons weet uit ondervinding dat ’n oplei-dingsprogram wat daarop gemik is omvoormalige gevangenes as mentors te be-kwaam, die beste langtermyn-resultatewaarborg. Hierdie oud-gevangenes sal toe-gerus word met lewensvaardighede.

“Ons sal ook probeer om vir hierdie ge-vangeneswerk te verskaf. Die gedagte is ommet kommersiële vennote te skakel om aanvrygelate en gerehabiliteerde gevangeneswat ons programme deurloop het, ’n kanste gee om vir hulle te werk,” sê Truter.

The Mfuleni Community Police Forum’s(CPF) annual general meeting scheduledto take place last week Thursday, had tobe postponed due to some of the registeredorganisations not attending.

The AGM is now scheduled for Wednes-day 3 December at the Mfuleni police stati-on boardroom.

At last Thursday’s meeting only six of

the registered 22 community organisati-ons attended. As per the constitution themeeting had to be postponed for 14 days.

The organisations in attendance lastweek included Happy Valley Rainbow, La-dies for All, ANC youth League, Ses’Kho-na, Mfuleni Backyarders and Sizithemba.

The meeting on 3 December will start at18:00.

Verlede jaar het Cobus die gehoor op hulvoete gehad by die konsert, met ’n paar klas-sieke liedere wat hoendervleismooi was.

“Dit was vir my ’n groot eer en voorregom saam met die groot name van ligte klas-siek en pop die verhoog te kon deel. Om deelte wees van so ’n mooi projek was vir myongelooflik lekker en ek sien uit na dié jaarse vertoning.

Feeste“Ons as Broers (Christo, Cobus en Nic) en

Christo en Cobus het al die verhoog gedeelmet Corlea en Robbie by Huisgenoot Skou-spel en ’n hele paar feeste,” vertel Cobus.

Hy is tans druk in die ateljee besig met’n “ongelooflike lekker” projek.

“Ek werk aan Louis Loock se nuwe solo-projek en dit is werklik lekker om saam metsulke musikale kunstenaars te werk. Ver-der skryf ons aan ’n nuwe Broers-album virvolgende jaar en as daar tyd is sal ek weeraan een of ander soloprojek werk.”

Cobus is baie beskeie oor sy eie talente.Op ’n vraag oor wanneer hy die eerste keerbesef het hy’t ’n stem soos Bryan Adams,was sy antwoord: “Ek dink nie dat ek heelte-mal soos die man klink nie, maar op NuweWinde – ’n CD wat ek en Christo uitgegeehet, het ons net ná Pavarotti and Friendsdie liedjie “O Sole Mio” wat hy (Pavarotti)en Bryan Adams gesing het opgeneem endit was altyd vir die gehore in ons land lek-ker om te sien en te hoor hoe ons die nom-mer vertolk. Daar het die Bryan Adams-stem ontwikkel en grootgeword.”

Cobus het musiek by die Univ ersiteit van

Kaapstad studeer– in ’n jazz-rigting. “Ekhet nie ’n gunsteling-genre van musiek nie.Ek glo uit verskillende genres leer en ont-wikkel jy jou eie styl. Musiek bly ’n kuns-vorm wat alle emosies kan vasvang, en ditis daar waar jy as kunstenaar met jou ge-hoor praat, deur die gevoel en emosie van’n liedjie aan hulle oor te dra.”

The possibility that gang violence mightnever be eliminated, only reduced,was a dis-turbing comment by DA member MireilleWenger in a public debate about gangs anddrugs and the effects it has on society.The debate was held at the Western Cape

legislature last week, where MPLs from op-position parties had the opportunity to high-light their concerns and criticisms.Wenger said she believes specialised units

are necessary to help fight gangs.“Crime and violence is demoralising, vic-

tims of violence suffer injuries, sometimesthey lose their lives.“Often thosewho live in such areas are de-

prived of life’s simple opportunities,”Wenger said.The ACDP’s Ferlon Christians made a

similar statement earlier that day. He saidchildren who are brought up in poor areaslike Elsies River experience gang violenceon a daily basis.“In fact, boys and girls say nothing good

can come from Hanover Park and Bokmaki-erie,” Christians said.He said absent parents was also an issue.“We cannot blame government and the po-

lice, we need to take responsibility.“When I spoke to a 10-year-old boy he said

he cannot get out of the gang, that he has tokill as a gang member,” Christians said.Dan Plato, Minister of Community Safety,

concurred. “With communities at the cen-tre, we need the help from the police and oth-er spheres of government but most impor-tantly from parents as well.“Speaker, active parenthood is more valu-

A 21-year-old man appeared in the BlueDowns Magistrate’s Court on Monday forpossession of an unlicensed firearm and am-munition.

The firearm, police say, was reported sto-

len after a burglary at Laaiplek police stati-on on the West Coast in September 2012.

Mfuleni police spokesperson Captain No-mathemba Muavha said the suspect was ar-rested in Wesbank on Thursday 13 Novem-

ber.“The police were patrolling in the area

when they spotted the man riding a bicyclewith his hand underneath his jacket.

“When they approached him he peddled

faster. He left the bicycle and dropped the fi-rearm on the ground. The suspect wascaught and arrested,” Muavha said.

The police found a Z88 police-firearm with15 rounds of ammunition in his position.

Instead of having a big party, a police colo-nel decided to celebrate his 50th birthdayby sharing goodwill.Colonel Henry Hubbard, a member of the

Kuils River police cluster, decided that thisyear he wants to do things differently andrather than having fancy celebrations, hewould plough the money he had into some-thing worth much more. This resulted in thepurchase of a wendy house which he donat-ed to an Eerste River teenager and her threesiblings on Friday last week.

Eerste River High matriculant Nadinevan Niekerk (18) – the recipient – said theyappreciate the gesture.

“I turned 50 recently and I said to myself,we are so blessed but others are not as fortu-nate,” said Henry.

“Instead of spending money on a good lifeand fancy party I decided to take the moneyand help someone,” he said.

While going through the crime reports, henoticed the case regarding Nadine who re-ported her mother for child abandonment.

“I said to myself, this is not right. The sys-tem is failing them.”

He then organised with his friends andfamily to all make a contribution.

“We then erected the wendy house,” hesaid.

The newly built structure now stands next

to the old iron shack in which the teen andher two twin brothers, Keenan and Kel (12)and sister, Cassidy (7) have been living infor the past eight months.

Nadine have been looking after her sib-lings during that time since their motherwalked out.

“These kids are relying on sandwiches at

school,” Henry said.Apart from his help, one teacher also con-

tributed R200 to the children each month.“But that is not enough to feed a hungry

mind,” Henry added.Nadine, who is currently writing her final

matric exams, said she is thankful.“Not a lot of people would do this,” she ex-

plained.Nadine wanted to study next year, but said

she might have to go work to maintain thehousehold.

suburban streets.It’s the 21st SPCA MySchool MyVillage

MyPlanet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon.The 4,5 km charity dog-walk takes place

at the Cape Academy of Maths and Scienceon the Corner of Firgrove Way and Spaans-gemacht River Road, Constantia, at 09:00.Soli Philander will be the MC for the day.

This hugely popular event supports thework of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA(CoGH SPCA) and last year saw 1600 wal-kers and 1100 dogs strut their stuff in theSociety’s aid.

“The Wiggle Waggle is possibly the mostloved event on the Cape of Good HopeSPCA’s fundraising calendar – and peopletravel from far and wide just to take part,”said event organiser, Juan August.

All funds raised from entries will go di-rectly to helping the SPCA prevent animalcruelty during the upcoming festive sea-son.

Despite never having sailed the sevenseas, a group of Eerste River localsworking as volunteers at one of the

world’s greatest ocean races, say the experi-ence alone is memorable.

The group of about ten volunteers fromthe area have for the past two weeks – dur-ing the Cape Town stopover of the VolvoOcean Race – looked after the crews andboats, and interacted with curious visitorswho frequent the pop-up centres located atthe V&A Waterfront.

The experience as a whole, most say, iswonderful.

Speaking to TygerBurger on Friday, Dev-on Park-resident Annalene Hollaway, whoalso works as a volunteer at the Eerste Riv-er Multi Purpose Centre, said she enjoyseach moment.

Friendly people“We meet a lot of people here, take them

to the boat so that they can get an experi-ence of what it is like for the sailors,” Holla-way said.

She works at the Cross Section – an exhi-bition area where people can climb onto ayacht to see how the craft operates.

What she enjoys most, Hollaway said, ismeeting lots of friendly people.

“The fact that I met Ian Walker and hisparents, that was the highlight,” she added.

Walker is the skipper of TeamAbuDhabi,the team who arrived first on the first legof the race from Alicante to Cape Town.

Benn Carey, volunteer coordinator in theVolvo Ocean Race’s operational team, saidbeing a coordinator is the best job.

“The friendship and the bond that youmake over here in 19 days – slightly less inSpain and slightly more in Abu Dhabi – isthat you’re meeting the volunteers who aregiving up their time for this race, withoutthem this would not happen,” the formervolunteer from London, England, said.

He said he understands what it means togive up one’s time.

“I have had a fantastic experience herewith these volunteers.

“It is humbling, it is a privilege for me tomeet peoplewho come from the backgroundthat these people come from,” he said.

Learning experienceJuleen van Rooyen from Electric City,

who also helps out at the exhibition centre,said she learned a lot while volunteering.

“This was a learning experience for me.I never had an interest in sailing, but nowI can actually explain to people how the boatworks and I am able to answer their ques-tions. This was a nice experience.

“It is my first time that I am involved inthis project, but it is absolutely amazing,”van Rooyen said.

EdwardDavids fromStratfordGreen saidthis year was the second time he’s been in-volved.

“I was also involved in the project in2012,” he said.

“Volunteering is one of the city’s mainpriorities, where we can get volunteers in-volved, to give the opportunity to people toexperience new things in the city,” he said.

He said he wants to encourage others, es-pecially young people, to get involved.

“By volunteering, it also leads to employ-ment. There is not just one event the cityhosts, there are many and there is a lot onecan learn,” saidDavids, whoworks as a hallattendant at the Kleinvlei Community Hall.

“I enjoy it. I love the whole event.“I met most of the participants, they are

very friendly and it is fun speaking to them.“One can network a lot. and we also learn

some of the foreign languages,” he saidsmiling.

Tonight the teams will set sail for AbuDhabi, the second leg of the 38 739 nauticalmile race.

for the six imported buds to be propagatedand cleared by the South African authori-ties before they could plant the new vines.“We decided on a clone from Sardinia af-

As they sing in “Desert Rose”, CrimsonHouse has been “Here and there and backagain”.Well, two of the Cape Town band’s mem-

bers have anyway. Saxophonist Nick Bec-ker and frontman Riaan Smit recently re-turned from a whirlwind American adven-ture.The duo went overseas to build connecti-

ons, experience the music industries and“see if the grass is really greener”.“There’s just a lot more grass, I think,”

Riaan says.They busked wherever they could and

tried to take in the lifestyle in New York,San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco andNew Orleans, amongst other places.

Price of a beerA highlight for Nick and Riaan was wor-

king with Alan Sanderson, a Grammyaward winning producer and engineerknown for his work with the likes of B.BKing and The Rolling Stones, and all it costthem was a Tafel Lager.“He really lovesNamibia and beer and re-

ally wanted to meet us,” explains Riaan,who is a Namibian.Despite only having 14 shows lined up

when theywent over, the two endedupplay-ing more than 50 across the states.Riaan says musicians in America earn

profession,” Nick adds.Riaan says the biggest lesson he learnt in

America is that the talent in South Africais on the same level, if not better. “We’re

sion of blues that draws him to the genre.“You don’t need to be good to do it; you justneed to be real”.“The foundations of the blues have been

laid down for the last 100 years,” Nick saysand says it’s a commondenominator forma-ny musicians, but still something they canmake their own.“I’ve had instances where I open my eyes

on stage after a song and I couldn’t believewhere I’m standing, because I completelywent into another world, that is special.”Because of its rich history, Riaan says

recent South African wrestling champi-onship in Pretoria, he returned home withtwo medals.“I won a silver medal for Greek-Roman,

and gold in freestyle. It was a great feelingto win these two medals, I really workedhard for this championship,” said Johan.Johan and his brother Rymert got invol-

ved in the sport as youngsters throughtheir father Ryno, who also wrestled.“My journey started back in 2005 in the

u-9 ranks. Since then I just workedmywaythrough to where I am today. Last year Iwas chosen to compete in the Africa CadetAmateur Wrestling Championship. I won

a silver medal in my weight category.“Currently I wrestle at the Brackenfell

StrandWrestling Club, but that is about tochange. I have a great opportunity to goand study civil engineering in Perth, Aus-tralia next year.“I am definitely going to join a club over

there. I would love to compete at the Com-monwealth Games one day.“I want to thank everyone involved for

The 22nd Coronation Double Century isa team cycling event taking place inSwellendamonSaturday (22November).The annual race attracts teams fromacross the country who tackle the chal-lenging 202km route, and this year anumber of teams from Brackenfell, Dur-banville and Bellville will join the other200-odd teams for a test of skill and endu-rance.TeamAction Frames comprises riders

from the Brackenfell, Kuils River andProtea Heights areas and they are ai-ming to complete the ride as a team inan ambitious time of 6.5 hours.Their captain, Dirk Oliver, says the

team is very well prepared and are loo-king forward to putting their months oftraining to the test.Team DIK Daisies and DUN Daisies

from the Bellville and Durbanville havealso been training for the Coronation

Double Century challenge and they arelooking forward to the challenge.While they’re not aiming to compete

for the title, these two local teams haveyears of experience, with many of themcycling for about eight years.Their team captains Jack Meyer and

Christoff Fourie have ridden a few Coro-nation Double Centuries before and arelooking forward to just riding throughthe Overberg in November.The Dirty Dozen Engen team are older
