Ouers van leerders by die HoërskoolWesbank is bekommerd oor hul kin-ders se veiligheid by dié skool vanweë

die onlangse vlaag bendeverwante aanvalleop die skoolterrein.

Edith van Wyk, ’n wykskomiteelid en ge-meenskapsleier, het vertel hoe daar verledeMaandag ’n bendeverwante aanval by diehoërskool plaasgevind het.

“Die week vantevore is ’n leerder met ’nmes by die skool aangeval. Die dag daarnawas daar nog ’n aanval,” het Van Wyk gesê.

Sy het gesê bendelede wag soms buite virdie leerders. Partymaal spring hulle oor dieskool se heining om toegang tot die skool te

kry.Van Wyk het gesê party van die ouers oor-

weeg nou om hul kinders by ander skole inte skryf.

Ander hou hul kinders tuis uit vrees virhul veiligheid.

Een van die ouers het vandeesweek vertelhoe sy haar seun by die huis moes hou, om-dat bendelede hom wil vermoor. Daar is gloonlangs op die 17-jarige geskiet. Die gr.10-leerder is sedert die aanval op sy lewe by diehuis. Die ma, wat anoniem wil bly, het gesêhaar seun is al drie weke by die huis.

Volgenshaarwordhaar seundeurdieben-des gesoek weens sy broer se betrokkenheidby bendes. “Dit lyk nou hulle wil hom dood-skiet. Die bendeswat homgeskiet het, is elkeoggend by die skool,” het die ma vertel.

Sy sê sy leef in vrees. “Waar gaan ek nouplek kry vir hom om skool te gaan?”

Nog ’n vrou het vertel hoe haar kind ge-reeld by die skool moet bly weens geweld bydie hoërskool. “Soms bly hy drie maal ’nweek by die huis. Ek vrees vir sy lewe. Diekind verloor opvoeding en aan die einde vandie jaar druip hulle,” het die ma gesê.

Joseph Adams, woordvoerder van dieMfuleni-GPF, het die ouers aangemoedig omsaam te staan teen geweld in die gebied enby die skool. Die skoolhoof, Douglas Jacobs,het navrae na die Wes-Kaapse departementvan onderwys verwys.

Paddy Attwell, woordvoerder van die de-partement, is reeds Vrydag om kommentaargenader. Hy het teen druktyd nog nie daaropgereageer nie.

Plans to erect awall of remembrance for thevictims of theButtskop railway crossing ac-cident are nearing finalisation.Ten children lost their lives in theAugust

2010 accident which shook the entire com-munity.The ten children who sadly passed away

are Reece Smith, 7, Michaela de Koker, 11,Nolan February, 13, Jody Phillips, 13, CodyErasmus, 15, NadineMarthinisen, 16, Jean-Pierre Willeman, 13, Jason Pedro, 14, JadeAdams, 10 and Lisle Augis, 11.Last Friday in a subcouncil meeting, Pie-

ter Grobler, manager of subcouncil 21, saidthat the matter was referred to Sanral’s re-gional office for the proposed donation ofthe land near the accident site.“Sanral has come back and said the CEO

approved the donation of the land to the Ci-ty of Cape Town.“We are currently drawing up the docu-

ments of agreement,” Grobler said.He said that construction will commence

18months from the date of signing the docu-ments.Grobler futher said that the City of Cape

will be responsible for bearing the cost oftranfering the land onto the city’s name.“The issue will be dealt with by the city’s

property management directorate.“This is the process we have to follow.

The main thing now is to identify all roleplayers,” Grobler said.Wilma Brady, ward councillor, thanked

the manager and chair welcoming the pro-gress that has been made.She said the proposals for the wall of re-

membrance had been a topic of discussionsince 2010.“At the lastmeetingwewere told that this

does not take a day.“I am the first to smile though,” Brady

said.

Brady asked if the parents of the victimshad been consulted with regards to the de-sign of the wall and what the costs of con-struction will be. Grobler said there hadbeen input from various role players.He said they currently do not know what

the estimated cost of the project will be.According to council documents a par-

king area wil also be built.Majidie Abrahams, PR councillor, asked

about the long term plans for the level cros-sing.“There was talks in the past of upgrading

or diverting the crossing,” he said.Grobler said: “These plans will have to be

taken up with various line departments.”

diagnosering deur ’n professionelekundige gedoen word, sodat die korrektemedikasie voorgeskryf kan word.Bipolêre versteuring het ’n komplekse

aard en neem dikwels lank om ditkorrek te diagnoseer. Dikwels worddepressie eerste gediagnoseer, omrededit meer kan voorkom en ook maklikeris om te diagnoseer. Die behandelingvan depressie en die bipolêre gemoeds-versteuring is nie dieselfde nie, endaarom is die diagnosering so belangrik.Raadpleeg dus jou geneesheer en be-spreek volledig jou simptome.Vir ’n pasiënt met bipolêre versteu-

ring is dit ook goed om ’n sielkundige ofpsigiater vir psigoterapie te konsulteer.Dit is belangrik vir ’n pasiënt omondersteuning te kry, insig te ontwikkelin die bipolêre versteuring, en te werkaan sy lewensvaardighede om sodoendesy psigososiale aanpassing so effektiefmoontlik te maak.Dis belangrik om nie net op medikasie

staat te maak nie, maar ook in jou lewedie nodige veranderinge aan te bring enaanpassings te maak.Derdens kan elektrokonvulsieterapie

ook in die behandeling van die bipolêreversteuring aangewend word. Indien diepsigiater dit oorweeg, sal hy dit eers metdie pasiënt bespreek.Die belangrike aspek in die behande-

ling van die bipolêre gemoedsversteu-ring is dat ’n mens dit nie moet afmaakas iemand wat net buierig is en homselfmoet regruk nie. Dis belangrik om tebesef dit is inderdaad ’n siekte watoorsake en gevolge het, en daarom is ditnodig om hierdie versteuring te behan-del.Hierdie versteuring ontneem ’n

individu sy lewenskwaliteit. Moenieskaam wees, of dink jy is simpel, of ditis nie nodig om hulp te kry nie.Daar is opgeleide professionele kundi-

right out of her beautiful shoes!”Her child gasps and then improvises an in-

nocent song about Sisi right there and then.Hartmann’s newly released book Sisi goes

to school and other stories is proving to be ahit with youngsters and even with a fewadults.TygerBurger’s editor, Marana Brand van

Hulsteyn, can vouch for that after reading ithundreds of times to her daughter Gabriela.The 4-year-old wonders about the bunny-

rabbit called Sisi who has to go to school andMarana is fascinated by the characters’shoes.Both seem engrossed in the tale.It is clear that Wendy’s book, which is de-

Die Kuilsrivier-polisiëringsgebied het dieafgelope week heelparty suksesse behaal.

Die gebied sluit in die Kleinvlei; Kuilsri-vier- en Mfuleni-polisiekantore.

Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, woordvoerdervan die Kuilsrivier-polisie, het gesê hullehet die afgelope week altesame 263 arresta-sies gemaak wat verband hou met ernstigemisdade soos moord, verkragting en huis-braak.

“Ons het ook 107 arrestasies gemaak virminder ernstige misdade soos oproerige ge-drag, drink in die openbaar en dronkweesop straat,” het Van Niekerk gesê.

Die polisie het ook op heelwat dwelmmid-dels beslag gelê. “Ons het op altesame 51.5 gtik, 25,5 g mandrax-tablette en sowat 1 kgdagga beslag gelê.”

“Die polisie in Kleinvlei het ook op ’n ge-weer beslag gelê. Ons het nog ’n persoon in

hegtenis geneem vir die besit van ’n ongeli-sensieerde vuurwapen en ammunisie.

“In Mfuleni het ons op drie ongelisensi-eerde vuurwapens beslag gelê.

“As mens kyk na die laaste ruk het onsdie afgelope paar maande heelwat bende-verwante voorvalle gehad in gebiede soosKleinvlei en Wesbank waar mense raakge-skiet of doodgeskiet is.

“Ons kom agter die misdadigers dra meergereeld ongelisensieerde vuurwapens.

“Dis wapens wat gebruik word in bende-gevegte en ook wanneer mense beroofword,” het Van Niekerk verduidelik.

Hy het gesê die polisie wil die euwel uit-roei.

“Mense moet eintlik die gemeenskap ’npluimpie gee. Hulle is die mense wat die in-ligting verskaf. Dié inligting word dan op-gevolg en lui na arrestasies en die beslag-legging van vuurwapens en dwelms,” hetVan Niekerk gesê.

Die polisie in Kuilsrivier waarsku motoris-te wat saans die R300-snelweg gebruik omte waak teen mense wat klippe na voertuieslinger.

Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, woordvoerdervan die Kuilsrivier-polisie, het gesê die po-lisie sit tans met ’n groot probleem wat diéverskynsel aanbetref.

“Die R300-snelweg vanaf Delft, Wesbanken ’n gedeelte van Kuilsrivier is vir ons ’nbekommernis.

“Daar is individue wat klippe na die paden verbygaande motoriste slinger. Ons wilom dié rede die mense waarsku om bedagte wees,” het Van Niekerk gesê.

Hy het gesê motoriste wat raakgegooiword, hou gewoonlik langs die pad stil.

“Dis wanneer die kwaaddoeners dan uitdie donker kom en die persoon beroof. Somsry van die motoriste alleen.”

Hy het gesê motoriste wat die pad saansgebruik moet verkieslik in so ’n geval niestilhou nie.

“Ry eerder tot by die naaste polisiestasie.Moet nie langs die pad stilhou nie.”

Hy het gesê daar is die afgelope paarmaande heelparty voorvalle by die polisie-kantoor aangemeld.

“Ons kry soms tot vier voorvalle wat aan-gemeld word. Die polisie sal dan die gebiedpatrolleer, maar dis gewoonlik wanneer ditweer stil raak,” het hy gesê.

Maar daar is iets besonders aan dié wag.Soggens dou voor dag ruim hy sy “werk-plek” behoorlik op – boonop nog sonder ’nbesem, maar met ’n stuk karton.

Derrick Basson (27) werk al jare lank askarwag in Kuilsrivier en is onlangs deur ’nTygerBurger-leser opgemerkwaar hy besigwas om sy parkeerterrein op te ruim. Der-rick tel soggens onder meer blikkies en pa-piere by sy staanplek op – op die parkeerter-rein, sypaadjie en selfs die deel rondom dieplaaslike munisipale gebou.

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” het hyonlangs tydens ’n onderhoud gesê.

Dít, volgens hom, is die rede waarom hysoggens sy plek opruim.

Gevra oor waarom hy soggens skoon-maak, het hy geantwoord: “Ek maak ditskoon, want ek weet niemand sal wil komwerk of parkeer op ’n vuil plek nie.”

Dit neem hom ’n paar minute om skoonte maak.

“Dit hang af hoe vuil dit is. Ek vat ’n stukkarton en maak dan daarmee skoon.

“Dis altyd ’n plesier vir my,” het hy ver-tel.

Derrick werk al sedert 2007 as karwag.“Ek het eers by KFC gestaan. Toe beweeg

ek oor na die ‘parking’ by die raad.“Voorheenwas hier ’n persoonwat ek ge-

help het. Hy was siek en het gesterf. Ek het

toe hier ingetrek.“Ek is oorspronklik vanBelhar,maar bly

op die straat. Ek slaap by die Kuilsrivier-stasie,” het die 37-jarige verder vertel.

Derrick leef al van 13-jarige ouderdom opdie straat nadat hy as kleuter van syvoogouers weggehardloop het.

Hy is op vroeë ouderdom van sy biologie-se ma geskei.

A desperate outcry for crisis interven-tion in crime-riddled Kraaifonteinwas the embodiment of the address

given at the memorial service of slainKraaifontein policewoman, Constable Ro-zelle Witbooi, last week Thursday.

“Life in Kraaifontein has become cheap,”said member of provincial parliament Car-ol Beerwinkel, who attended the memorialalong with other dignitaries.

Witbooi was killed in a shoot-out witharmed robbers in Old Paarl Road, Kraaifon-tein a week prior.

Beerwinkel hailed the death of Witbooi asa turning point in the community of Kraai-fontein and urged provincial police com-missioner Lieutenant-General Arno Lamo-er to urgently intervene in the area.

“Something must be done… crime in thistown has become out of hand. The commu-nity has lost hope,” she said to a packedLofdal Ministries church in Brackenfell In-dustria.

During his speech, Lamoer asked: “Howmany more police officers need to die in theline of duty to keep our communities safe?”

He said 12 police officers were killed inthe line of duty in the province last year –the highest in the country.

“Society has to realise that the safety andsecurity of our communities is not the re-sponsibility of the police alone,” he said,adding that all social workers, doctors andsupport staff of all the relevant social serv-ices departments must take responsibilityfor the welfare of the community.

He told police officers to let Witbooi’s un-timely death be an inspiration in the contin-uous fight against crime.

“When one of us falls, it does not meanwe are down,” he said.

Margaret Witbooi described her sister assomeone who was funny, passionate andprotective.“She would always put the prob-lems of others before that of her own. Shewas not pretentious; what you saw, is whoshe was,” she said. Witbooi would haveturned 31 this year and was in the policeforce for five years at the time of her death.Four of these years were spent at the Kraai-fontein police’s Crime Prevention Unit.

Before this she was a reservist at theKleinvlei Police Station for three years.

Kraaifontein Police Station commanderBrigadier Gerda van Niekerk describedWitbooi as a person who always wore asmile and an officer dedicated to her call-ing. Her funeral service took take place atthe New Apostolic Chruch in Dennemere onSaturday and she was laid to rest at a Kraai-fontein cemetery.

Terrible Palsy. This is whatthe 9-year-old Nimoe deHoop with Cerebral Palsy

(CP) thought her disability wascalled.

Nimoe is one of 4000 people inSouthAfricawithCP. She suffe-red from a lack of oxygen whenshe was born. Nobody under-stands ‘Terrible Palsy’ betterthan Lesley Potgieter, a mo-ther, wife, author, ex-teacherand Edgemead resident livingwith CP who is determined tochange this perception.

“Just because you have CP, itdoes not mean you won’t be theworlds’ next astro-physicist,”Lesley says. “The question hereis ‘What are you capable of andwhatwill yoube capable of ifwemake some changes?’,” shesays.

One of Lesleys’ projects tohelp children with CP to disco-ver their potential, is theAwareBear, Helen. Helen is a bearwith CP. She visits disabledchildren for twoweeks at a timeto help them better understandand cope with their situation.She travels with a journal, andeach child contributes to thejournal with stories and pictu-res of the visit.

Helen was created after Les-ley became involved with theAmerican Awareness Bear As-sociation as a writer, writingletters to childrenwith disabili-ties on behalf of a soft toy witha “disability” that goes out to vi-sit children with the same dis-ability.

Changing the perception“The South African society is

not ready to deal with disabili-ty,” says her husband Carl. Hesays he loves to take his family- they have two boys, Josh andAdamwho are 12 and 11 – to themovies. The cinemas atN1Cityhave been redone recently, butfor all the grandeur, there is on-ly two wheelchair seats. “Andone is theworst seat in thewho-le theatre. You are halfway inthe isle, you sit right under thelight”, and this, the Potgieterssay, symbolises the way societysees the disabled.

“As soon as a baby with a dis-ability is born, everybody goesquiet. You are placed in a priva-te room. People talk in hushedvoices. There is a negative con-

notation from the start,” shesays.

Despite spending her wholelife with no sensation in theright side of her body, Lesleywas able to complete highschool in a mainstream school,because her body responded sowell to treatment, but she stillhad to face many challenges.

“If a teacher does not have re-medial background, it is verydifficult to understand what achild with special needs reallyneeds. I was always in troublefor not being able to draw astraight line with a ruler, sim-ply because one cannot do thatwith one hand. And the phys-ical limitations of childrenwithCP can be countless,” she says.

Lesley finished school andbe-came a teacher herself andmar-ried the love of her life, Carl.

More challengesFive years ago, she suffered a

major stroke and her body lostits ability to compensate for herdisability. According to Carl,everything changed after that.Lesley had no speech left andshe could not walk anymore.But by doing yoga and excerci-ses in the pool, she slowlyfought her way back to beingmobile again.

Today she can move aroundthe house on her own, butdrives amotorised scooter onceshe goes out. Her speech haspartially returned, but in manycases Carl has to translate.

But they are not interested inthe blame game. In stead Lesleyuses her energy for the CP cau-se.

“Small children do not knowthey are different. But once youare a teenager with CP you notonly realise you are different,you realise you are REALLYdifferent,” she says

“Yes, I am different, but I amnot alone.” This is the messageof Lesleys’ brainchild, Helen.

In the last 14 months, Helenhas visited 17 children andthree schools throughout SouthAfrica.

The children and familieswho read her journals, can seestories and pictures of otherchildrenwith disabilities and ithelps them to understand thatthey are not alone.

Someday Rush visited the Orange Couch to talk about their new EP.

“Chavelle infused with chocolate groove.”That’s how lead guitarist, Kyle Abraham-

se describes Someday Rush’s music.The alternative rock band is preparing to

launch their EP, Fight love Live, this wee-kend.

“It’s very diverse and basically encompas-ses the things that you go through in life,”drummer, Michael Gentis, says of the EP,adding: “Especially adult life, as your arefinding yourself.”

“It’s also a reflection of our evolution asa band,” says vocalist Carmen Julius.

“We started out three years ago and up tonow, this is the best thing we’ve producedso far,” bassist Caylon Hammond explains.

“It’s a hard rock album, something we alllove to do and Carmen’s vocals just adds abit of sexiness to it,” he says.

While busy working on the song “Fight lo-ve live” the band decided to use the song titleas their album title, because it captured eve-rything they wanted to say.

The group worked with Ladismith basedproducer, Joe Ellis, of Blooroom Studioswhen they recorded the EP.

“Personal opinion probably, but the bestperson we’ve ever worked with,” Caylonsays of Joe.

He goes on to talk about the evolution ofthe band: “I think we started out very dis-jointed.”

“Coming into the band we all had differentinfluences and at first we thought we were

absolutely great, but clearly not,” Caylon jo-kes, adding that he feels they have grown to-gether as a band since then, taking them toa place where they can produce somethingtogether that they are proud of.

“Also, we can identify what our sound isnow,” Michael adds.

Carmen also points out that because someof the songs on the EP were written and fewyears ago, and have been developed over ti-me, they are also a symbol of the band’s evo-lution.

Like many Cape Town bands, SomedayRush is a mixture of members from otherbands who ended up playing together in2010. Their fifth member is the quiet rhythmguitarist, Nick Pugin.

The group released their first music videofor the EP, for the song “All of me” last weekand Caylon says they chose the song becauseit sums up the sound of their whole EP.

“We just felt that that was the most power-ful introduction to the EP,” he explains. “It’salso who we are right now,” Carmen adds,as it’s the song that’s been written most re-cently.

Someday Rush will be launching their EPat Aandklas in Stellenbosch on Saturdaywith guest acts, Black Moscow and Set forthe Sky. Entrance costs R20 at the door.

The annual NMA IKSA Black Belt gradingwas recently held underKancho Paul Cave(son of Hanshi Eddie Cave) in Cape Town.The gruelling challenge took place over

three days with all candidates being testedon their knowledge and understanding onthe various martial arts that the academyoffers.The Academy with several dojo’s spread

across the northern suburbs teaches an ef-fective and realistic hybrid combinationwhich includes stand up fighting arts in-corporating boxing, kickboxing and MuayThai as well as syllabus work in takedowns, Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Kali (stickfighting) and street defense.All grading’s are Internationally sancti-

oned by ISKA. It was a gruelling physicalmarathon testing the body, mind and soul.On average each student in attendance

has been training for over 5 years. Therewere also several candidates who gradedfor first and second dan all of whom beentraining for between 7 and 10 years. Noteveryone in attendance passed the gra-ding.The karateka who received their black

powerhouse invitational team at the Best-med Tour de Boland, presented by ASG, ear-ly next month.The four-day road tour, which starts in

Franschhoek on 4 March, will pit Sauser’sstellar line-up of mountain bikers againstthe cream of South African roadies.The Meerendal-Songo.info team will in-

clude the Swiss champion’s new Cape Epic

partner Frantisek Rabon, as well as localpros Erik Kleinhans, Lourens Luus, NicoBell and Oliver Munnik.They will face off against pro teams like

Abantu, Bonitas and the local MTN-Qhu-beka outfit, which includes last year’schampion Nic Dougall.

trial, although that means on the remainingstages there will be work awaiting us to pos-sibly defend the jersey.”All eyes will be onthe three-time Czech time-trial championduring the 21km stage from the Berg RiverDam to the top of Helshoogte Pass.Sauser said Rabon, who rode for Omega

Pharma-Quick Step last season, would pro-vide invaluable guidance on the three roadstages between Stellenbosch, Tulbagh andRiebeeck-Kasteel.
