The opinion voiced by Montague GardensBusiness Forum (MGBF) spokespersonSchulla Pronk is echoed by many.

When the sun sets, the vagrants move in.And, according to some, the proliferation

of certain vagrants means the crime increa-ses.TygerBurger reported in August last year

in the article entitled “Vagrants ‘eyes&ears’of crime” how business owners are convin-ced there is a link between vagrancy and cri-me, even though Milnerton police spokes-person, W/O Daphne O’Reilley, doubtedthis.

MGBF members met with community sa-fety MEC Dan Plato at the Milnerton policestation on Wednesday last week and onceagain insisted there is a link.

UneasyPeople with a stake in Montague Gardens

are getting more and more uneasy, and theirincreased turn out at these meetings servesas testimony.

Two years ago between five and ten Mon-tagueGardensbusiness ownerswent tomee-tings at the police station, but last week mo-re than 50 showed up.

The newly formed MGBF also only hadtwo days to get let people know about themeeting, said Pronk.

“They are clearly fed up with the crime,”she said.

“Wepaymillions ofRands in tax, our rates

just keep escalating, and yet there is onlyone police vehicle patrolling the area, whichincludes Joe Slovo Park. One would countoneself lucky if one saw that van once amonth. We need a patrol vehicle for Monta-gue Gardens,” she insisted.

This was just one of the issues raised atthe meeting with Plato.

“The scrap dealers are a huge problem asthey provide a source of income for the va-grants. The law should be changed to keepvagrants out of the industrial area at night.What are they doing there anyway when bu-sinesses are closed? And then a CommunityCourt is urgently required. We have infor-mants among the vagrants and we were toldthat some vagrants sell stolen goods to dea-lers in return for drugs, not money,” saidPronk.

Businesses targetedThe MGBF compiled a report which they

presented at the meeting, in which theyhighlighted some of the crimes committedduring the last eight weeks.

The cost of these to companies makes forstartling reading.

Thedamagedone toair-conditioningunitsalone amounts to more than half a millionrand.

“Just in the past two months 11 businessesand properties were targeted by criminalsand the economic loss amounts to just undera million rand. Tenants will leave the areadue to the high crime unless something isdone. It is clear, that whatever is being doneby authorities with regards to crime preven-tion in Montague Gardens at the moment isnot effective.”

“I know I’m gorgeous,” chuckles Dan-ni Carrera Beanz.“But looks aren’t that important to

me. I’m more of a thinking type. And a dig-ging type. Yes! Digging holes, now that isspecial!”Danni digs, but she has plentymore to of-

fer than just holes in the ground.She is a “therapy dog”.And her human, Edith Kriel of Jelly Be-

anz, is also a therapist.TygerBurger chatted to the two recently

about the “therapy dog” initiative by theTable View-based non-profit organisationthat gives hope to children affected by trau-ma and abuse.Edith was easier to understand, primari-

ly because of her ability to speak.“We called her Danni so a child could see

her as a boy or a girl,” says Edith. “As partof Danni’s work, children might projecttheir own issues onto her, so they can choo-se what they want Danni to be.”Danni, who has been involved in playful

tug-of-war with a rope, stops briefly andtilts her head quizzically.“So I’m a kind of quasi-gender 11-month-

old Newfoundland dog? It has a ring to it.Yes... I can seewhere you’re goingwith this,human!”She grabs the rope again and grapples

with it.Edith continues: “Her surname, Beanz, is

self-explanatory, and her middle name co-mes from thePorcheCarerramodel. Porchewere our initial sponsors.”Danni is still undergoing obedience trai-

ning, but she has already left her mark onJelly Beanz.Not on the carpet, no.“We went to a school recently and talked

about how dogs could be used inwork, such

as police dogs. After the assembly a littlegirl went to her teacher and told her abouttrauma in her own life, something she hasnever told anyone before. The girl thenasked the teacher to go talk to Danni aboutit – and the lady who belongs to Danni. I be-come sort of insignificant, becauseDanni isnow the drawcard,” explains Edith.Danni puts his paw on Edith and yips:

“There, there human. You are also impor-tant. I don’t know what I would do if thereweren’t someone to scratchmy tummy eve-ry day.”Edith adds inaudibly: “ss...sss....sss..s”“Excuse me?” I ask while Danni cocks

kes food...”Danni sits bolt upright and pants: “You

said ‘food’. I heard that!”The dog looks at me insistently.“Did you hear that? My human just said

Also, just having an animal there forthe children is comforting. Danni is my co-therapist,” elaborates Edith.“Yes, yes,” says Danni, nodding her head

in agreement.“I’ma therapist food indeed. I do, after all,

love children and definitely want to foodwhenever I can. At times like this I am re-minded ofmy favourite FredericWeatherlysong.”Danni howls melodiously: “Oh Danni

boy, the food, the food is calling...”Edith concludes: “Yes, we use food to mo-

tivate her.”A motivated dog indeed!

The Southern African Foundation for theConservation of Coastal Birds’ (SANCCOB)penguin chicks are in desperate need of anursery. Every year SANCCOB admits bet-ween 800 and 900 abandoned African penguinchicks and eggs for rehabilitation and thenreleases them back into the wild.

The organisation appeals for funds to builda nursery to house the larger penguin chicks.The nursery will add much needed capacityto the current Chick Rearing Unit which isover-flowing with hungry penguins.

Penguin chicks and eggs are admittedwhen their parents either abandon them du-

ring their annual moult or when they havefallen ill or become weak. Chicks are also re-moved as a precautionary measure from are-as where they are at risk cars or pets.

The victim of a house burglary has ur-ged the community to stop procrasti-nating.

Steph Loy-Reed of Milnerton lost valua-ble documents and photos when, amongother items, her computer was stolen onTuesday last week.“One should back-up to the cloud or an

external hard drive religiously. We’vebeen trying to find the time to do adminat home, and never did. So my messagewould be not to neglect your admin. Some-thing can happen at any time, because cri-minals wouldn’t take the external drive,especially if you hide it,” says Loy-Reed.This is the second time she has been the

victim of a burglary in the last year, andstill she neglected to follow her own advi-ce.Now Loy-Reed wants to use the opportu-

nity to spread this simple message to asmany people as she can.

Sliding doors“Theywedged through our three sliding

doors as well as through the security sli-ding door,” she explains. They first pop-ped the back door, but because it was closeto our neighbours they went to the otherside and popped those sliding doors. MyiMac, jewellery, clothes, whiskey and tele-vision were stolen. They stuffed our back-packs with all they could take. They hadtime to go through it. Nothingwas broken.They took the perfume, but not the half-

empty perfume. They took new clothes,but not old clothes.”

tos and files are gone. I last backed-up ayear ago, but everything after that is go-ne.”She goes on to warn people that with the

A age-old warning about a wave of“Drano bomb” attacks has hit socialmedia again.This warning, attributed to the

South African Police Service, is non-sense, says Table View station com-mander, Col Dirk Vosloo.“It’s the first time I’ve heard about

it,” says Vosloo when asked aboutthe warning.It states that thieves put Drano

(Jeyes Fluid in South Africa), tin foiland a little water in plastic drink bot-tles with the cap on. They then leaveit your property so that you’l pick itup to throw away. But the warningis that if the mixture is agitated bybeing picked up, it will build upenough gas to blow up with enoughforce to remove a hand or arm.Vosloo adds that these warnings

would be circulatedwithin the policenetwork before being made public,and he is completely unaware of it.According to the webpage Hoax

Slayer, the message has apparentlybeen circulating the globe since 2010,slightly adjusted to spread fear in lo-cal communities.“In many cases the bombs explode

noon is from 17:00-20:00. The pre-judgingstarts onSaturdaymorning at 09:00,with themain show commencing at 19:00.The affiliation fee for athletes is R100 and

The day finally arrived for Parow power-lifter Bonita Hein to represent her count-ry, and boy did she make a statement.Bonita (43) achieved her full Protea co-

lours when she competed last week at theIFP Classic World Raw Powerliftingchampionships in Potchefstroom.Bonita was placed fourth overall in her

masters-1 u-84kg division.“First and foremost I would not have

beenable to achieve this accomplishmentwithout the grace of God. Despite fallingill with flu two weeks prior to the compe-tition, I was fully committed to competeand set out to achieve what I worked sohard for, from the Western Provincechampionships to the provincials, quali-fying with totals at each event to be ableto go to the ‘worlds’,” said a satisfied Bo-nita.Shewas successfulwith eight out of her

nine lifts, only failing her 70kg benchpress attempt.She had green lights for her 110kg

squat, 62,5kg bench press and 155kg dead-lift, giving her a total of 327,5kg.“Missing my 70kg bench was very dis-

appointing. I could have placed even bet-ter, but that is part of the game. You arenot always going to make the totals youwant. This just makes me more determi-ned to train even harder.“In hindsight, it was a great learning

experience sitting back stage with manyinternational athletes who have beencompeting for years and have many ran-kings behind their names. The USA, Fin-land and Sweden were the strongestcountries.”After the success of her first ever appe-
