Thanks to its dedicated staff, many im-provements, and the co-operation ofthe surrounding community, Table

Bay Nature Reserve has won the City ofCape Town’s Reserve of the Year award, fora second time.Thebiodiversity areamanager for theMil-

nerton area, Koos Retief, explains that theTable Bay Nature Reserve (TBNR) is ownedby the city andmanagedby theEnvironmen-tal Resource Management Department (ER-MD).“We see this award not just as recognising

the nature reserve, but the team of peoplewho work to promote the reserve, and all ofthe stakeholders who are involved in someway to benefit from or contribute to the na-ture reserve,” Retief says.The reserve protects about 258 plants, 185

birds, 30 mammals, 20 reptiles, 13 fish, andseven amphibian species.“Some of these species and vegetation

types are threatened with extinction and re-

sources labour from the Du Noon communi-ty and hasmade natural resources availableto support a reed craft group in Du Noon.Retief says the reserve interacts with

stakeholders through management forumsto ensure the community is involved withdecision-making. They also keep neighbour-ing residents informed of activities.

Last year July, the TBNR launched a newnew administrative office complex at Rietv-lei.Since then, the building and reserve infra-

structure has seen upgrades to make the re-serve more accessible.“The reserve promotes opportunities for

environmental education as well as birdwatching and various water and shore-based recreational activities,” Retief says.The Rietvlei water area is also used by po-

lice and rescue divers, boat skippers andfirefighters as a training venue and is oftenused to test water craft.The Friends of Rietvlei constructed a

wheelchair access ramp to the Rietvlei edu-cation centre and the Milnerton AquaticClub repainted the water sports club houseto blend inwith the reserve’s colour scheme.The arrival of a very rare Black Skimmer

(seabird from the Americas) this yearcaused birdwatchers from as far as Gautengto stream to Rietvlei while there have alsobeen several sightings of caracals, one ofwhich was captured at the Potsdam Waste-water Treatment Works and relocated to Ri-etvlei.Tygerburger readers might also recall the

stray plains zebra which wandered into theMilnerton Horse Riding Club. Retief saysthe zebra was captured and relocated.“The reserve management team consists

of an area manager with three assistants, as

well as environmental educators, students,an intern, anda teamof field rangers,”Retiefexplains.Pollution, alien vegetation, increasing

amounts of stormwater runoff into the re-serve, dumping and illegal structures on theedges of the reserve are someof the challeng-es the reserve faces due to its urban sur-roundings.“We work closely will Law Enforcement,

Table View Neighbourhood Watch and thePaarden Island City Improvement Districtto respond to such transgressions,” Retiefsays.He says residents can help protect the re-

serve by reporting illegal activity, by notdumping, by not allowing their pets in the

reserve and bynot planting any plants in thearea.“Communities have a right to be repre-

sented in decision-making aroundnature re-serves and therefore must ensure that theirresidents’ associations make contact withus,” Retief says.“It is an honour to be recognised in such

Confusion has surfaced surrounding the re-registration for social grants from theSouthAfricanSocial SecurityAgency (SAS-SA).Rugby resident, Tanya Steyn, contacted

TygerBurger via the newspaper’s website,after not receiving the grant she collects forher two children this month.Steyn wrote that she had noticed that the

amount she was getting was different overthe previous two months.She says shehad emailedSASSA,without

a response and when she phoned their tollfree number, she was told she had to re-reg-ister her children with SASSA.SASSA embarked on a process to biomet-

rically register social grants earlier thisyear, with the aiming of avoiding fraud andcorruption. While the deadline for re-regis-tering was moved twice, it was eventuallyset for the end of July 2013.Steyn says when the process was first ad-

vertised, she contacted SASSA andwas toldthat only people receiving grants throughbank accounts need re-register.“Nowmykids sitwithout thatmoney this

month and people can’t give answers ordon’t want to answer,” Steyn says.SASSA Western Cape’s general manager

for grant administration, Henry de Grass,says SASSA has done comprehensive com-munication through themedia, communitymeetings and pamphlets that all beneficiar-ies inclusive of all children must re-regis-ter, since their re-registration project start-ed in June 2012.“The information provided by the call

centre is incorrect and will be followed upwith the call centre staff,” De Grass says,adding that Steyn should contact the SAS-SA Cape Town local office to re-register herchildren. “Once the beneficiary has re-reg-istered the grant will be restored with backpay,” he says.DeGrass says theremaybemany reasons

why grant amounts may differ. “For exam-ple; some beneficiaries would require a bal-ance statement at an ATM. Banks wouldcharge these beneficiaries for a balancestatement which is only deducted the fol-lowing month from the grant amount,” hepoints out, adding: “Some beneficiarieswould have debit orders deductions againsttheir grant.”De Grass says re-registration can be done

Table View’s Will Scott believed he couldfly and then last week...he did.Will, a quadriplegic, got to make one of

his dreams a reality recently when hadthe opportunity to paraglide from SignalHill.“It was awesome!” Will says excitedly,

adding: “It’s the closest thing to flyinglike a bird you could ever get to.”He says the experience exceeded his ex-

pectations by 10 times.Will’s adventure beganwith a very spe-

cial birthday gift. “It started with myaunt,” he says.His aunt, wondering what “to get a guy

who can’t walk”, decided to give him theability to fly and booked his paraglidingflight with a company called Para Taxi,who were the first company to agree totake Will up in the air.“I had been trying for the longest time

to do something like this,” Will says,pointing out that all the companies hecontacted felt that his limited mobilitywould make a flight too risky.“Eventually I gave up and made peace

with the fact that I’d never be able to dothis,” he says.’Will’s jump was delayed by more than

amonthwhile he andJandeJager of ParaTaxi waited for perfect weather condi-tions.When the day arrived though, everyone

was prepared.“They brought a whole team of guys,”

Will says, adding that the company whohelped him really did their homework tomake sure he would have a safe flight.“For that I can only thank them,” Willsays.By paragliding, Will, who manages so-

cial media for Western Cape Associationfor Persons with Disabilities (amongstother organisations) wanted to createawareness around the abilities of peoplewith disabilities.“The message I was trying to send is

that just because you see a guy in awheel-chair, don’t assume you know what hecan and cannot do,” Will says.Will was 16 when a spinal injury

changed his life.He had been training to represent

South Africa in the trampoline WorldChampionships in Germany and wasbusy training when he fell.“I came down on my forehead and I

heard a click,” Will recalls, adding: “Itchanged my life in the blink of an eye.”Will is paralysed from the shoulders

down with limited mobility in his armsup to his elbows.“I’m just a go-getter kind of person,”

Will says, pointing out that he won’t lethis disability get him down.He also says that he is a bit of an adrena-

line junkie who would probably be push-ing the limits even if he didn’t have a disa-bility.A concern for Will is how corporates

see people with disabilities and he wouldlikebusiness to start noticing theabilitiesof people with disabilities as well.“I’ve got to work twice as hard as the

next guy to impress you,”Will says, point-

ing out thatmany people with disabilitiesget overlooked, simply because of theirdisability and not their capability.GoPro were there to film Will’s jump

and have put together a video which hehas been sharing online to help get hismessage out there. “It surprised a lot ofpeople,” Will says.For his next adventure,Will will be tak-

ing on Scuba Diving, with Table Viewcompany, Bubble Blowers – the companyhas agreed in principle to help him withhis next dream.His foot got caught during his paragli-

A perfect evening heralded the launch ofthe Art Exhibition at Rust-en-Vrede com-prising the creative works of Ralph John-son (porcelain and stoneware bowls),Hannes van Zyl (bottles and bowls art-work), Marlize van Rijswyk (crafted finejewellery), Iwan Labuschagne (white figu-rines in fired paper clay and found ob-jects) and friends.

The Group exhibition was aptly named“Connection” and officially launched onTuesday 12 November. This project willrun to 12 December at Rust-en-Vrede, Dur-banville, Wellington Road (oppositeCheckers).

Packed to capacity with artists, art in-vestment buyers and art lovers, theevening presented itself with a wonderfulvisual display of many unique pieces fromsuspended boxed handcrafted jewellery toan array of fine white slender vases blend-ed together in sophisticated light colours.Scrumptious plates of gourmet food float-ed in and out, carried to the tables in theoutside terraced garden area and finewines were enjoyed by the guests perus-ing the art... and all the delicacies availa-ble at the tables.

Grabbing a glass of dry red wine for my-self, I meandered through the motleycrowd comprising many faces familiar inthe art world. This was the last exhibitionfor the year at Rust-en-Vrede and theyhave built up a fine art database fromwhich the invitations were drawn.

There was an excited energy of expecta-tion as the crowd listened to the welcom-ing speeches and then wandered throughin a relaxed manner to savour the visualexperiences on display. Absorbing the en-ergy and power of the original art works,

they mulled around quietly trying to un-derstand the subtleties...

Always the unusual to be found therewas for example a number of delicate ce-ramic bowls created by Hennie Meyerwhich were linked together in conformityto the title of the exhibition leading fromone fine bowl to another, starting with onebowl clearly printed with the Vehiclenumber of the artist’s friend in Australiato his CY number in Northern SuburbsCape Town – these numbers clearly dis-played and embedded in the surface of onebowl indicating to the world “Connec-tion” In Art.

Breadtags can, evidently, purchase wheel-chairs.

The first Bothasig scouts group startedcollecting bread tags on Friday 1 Novem-ber, and are asking the community for theirsupport in the project.

The recycle cost of 270 kg of bread tags isequivalent to the cost of one wheelchair,and the project will be running until the endof the year.

Group Scouter spokesperson Paul Innessaid the club will be working hard to collectthe tags so that more people in need ofwheelchairs can be helped.

Celebrating the end of the year and thesuccess of previous projects, the group hada District Competition in Table View wherethey built a four metre high catapult.

Groups from Monte Vista, Edgemead,Bothasig, Factreton, Milnerton, Table View

and Blaauwberg competed.The first Bothasig Scout group, located in

Buren Street, has a long history of commu-nity based projects in Cape Town and thegroup is planning more events for the newyear.

The group was formed in 1967 soon afterthe establishment of Bothasig in 1965.

In 1970 the troop had to be split due totheir growth. These meetings had to be heldin garages and only in 1973 was the Bothasigscout hall built on the corner of Tafelbergand Buren Street. Currently the group con-sists of Scouts, Cubs, and Rovers.

Road Extension and Malibongwe Boule-vard has provided a much-needed addi-tional access route into and out of theParklands and Sunningdale areas, thetiming of the traffic lights is causing abottleneck of traffic on this route.“The opening of a new road is quite of-

ten accompanied by some uncertaintyaround traffic volumes, and traffic sig-nal timing plans are initially developedto accommodate predicted volumes,” ex-plains Brett Herron, the city’s mayoralcommittee member for transport.“The signal timing plans are therefore

usually monitored at street level from

the day on which the road is opened,” hesays.Herron explains that the city’s traffic

signal analysts havemonitored the oper-ation of signals on Sandown Road sinceits opening and have improved the peakperiod signal plans to yield a reasonablelevel of service to motorists using theroad.“Further adjustments to the timing of

the traffic lights will be undertaken astravel patterns settle,” he says.“We would like to apologise to motor-

ists for any inconvenience being experi-enced. We are confident that traffic willfind equilibrium in the coming weeks asmotorists decidewhether to continueus-ing the new route or return to the routesthey previously used,” he says.

MyCiTi set for summer season

Just in time for the holiday season, MyCiTi buses are rolling out from the central city, via the V&AWaterfront andalong the beachfront to the new Queens Beach station in Sea Point.

The network of MyCiTi routes is expanding again on30 November, with the launch of services from theV&AWaterfront to Camps Bay and in the Century Cityand Montague Gardens area.

The impact onpassengers is that minibus taxisand Golden Arrow bus servicesare being withdrawn where newMyCiTi routes are introduced. InCentury City the shuttle servicewill also be discontinued.The biggest change for

commuters is that cash is notaccepted on MyCiTi buses.Everyone aged four years andover has to have their ownmyconnect card, loaded withmoney for fares. These areavailable for R25 from MyCiTistations and selected retailers.Changing daily travel habits can

be complicated, and routes arenot exactly the same, but MyCiTi’ssafe, reliable, scheduled serviceaims to set new standards inpublic transport in Cape Town.“We would like to thank everyone

“That’s quite lekker because youare playing with different blues art-ists, up and coming cats, establishedblues players and it’s really great,”Dr John says.BluesTown is becom-ing quite popular, especially amidstthe revival that local blues has expe-rienced in recent years.“We’d like totake some credit for it, becausewe’ve been plugging away at it forlike 15 years,” Richard jokes.“There definitely are a lot of young-er bands playing the blues and obvi-ously they’re coming to gigs, theyare coming to a festival or two,” hesays, adding: “That’s bringing in aslightly younger market.”

One of these festivals is the TableMountain Blues Summit happeningthis weekend (22 and 23 November)at Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville.

“It’s going to be a huge sound,” Ri-chard says, pointing to the 30 000watt sound system on offer at thefestival. Legendary blues band, Boule-vard Blues, will be among thetop blues acts performing at the

Table Mountain Blues Summit thisweekend.

The band, who have become a sta-ple on the Cape Town blues circuithave been going for about 15 years.

Drummer Graeme Abbot andfrontman, Dr John Mostert were sit-ting in a café in Blouberg called theBoulevard Café when they got theinspiration for the band’s name.

“We thought that was a good namefor the band, so that sort of stuck,”Graeme says.

Graeme and Dr John are joined inthe band by bassist, Rob Stemmett,Greg Smith on percussion and har-monica and guitar maestro, RichardPryor.

When TygerBurger last spoke tothe band in July 2010, they weregearing up for their successful firstoverseas tour, to Belgium and theNetherlands.

The band agrees that if sponsor-ships came together they would touragain in a heartbeat.BoulevardBlues are one of the many localnames who recently recorded a songfor VH Music’s SA Blues Breakersalbum. The band recorded EricClapton’s “Some day after a while”and will also be involved in the stu-dio’s next compilation album, RockBreakers.

When they are not busy with theband, Dr John and Rob are also partof the team that presents BluesTownSessions at Mercury every secondThursday, a regular blues event.

Boulevard heads to Summit

Boulevard Blues are on the Orange Couch this week, ahead of their performan-ce at the Table Mountain Blues Summit.

Award-winning musiciansSterling EQ and the South Af-rican Sopranos will usher inthe holiday season at the an-nual Nederburg picnic con-cert on Saturday.

Sterling’s classical and con-temporary instrumentals ha-ve won them legions of fansboth locally and internatio-nally.

The Cape Town-based triowill share the stage with an ac-claimed vocal quintet, theSouth African Sopranos.

All soloists in their ownright sopranos Janelle Vis-

du Plessis, congratulated an inspirationalgroup of Cape Town youth leaders who havesuccessfully graduated from the LaureusYouth Empowerment Through Sport (YES)Programme.

Inspire2013 marks the second year of this pro-

gramme which trains youth leaders to har-ness the power of sport to inspire and trans-form their communities. Some 39 partici-pants aged between 18 and 25 were selectedfrom a wide base of sport for social changeprogrammes nationally. YES leaders havecompleted sports management training de-livered by innovative partners such as theSports Science Institute of South Africa, Ex-ercise Teachers’ Academy, Children’s RadioFoundation and Youth Zones.Knowledge gained includes eventmanage-

ment, IT skills, facilitation, sports coaching,media communication and important lead-ership skills.After the graduation the leaders show-

cased their new skills in sessions with 40kids from local Laureus projects: GrassrootsSoccer,Waves For Change and Indigo YouthMovement. They were joined by four Lau-reus Ambassadors: Ernst van Dyk, RyanSandes, Cynthia Tshaka and Swiss LaureusAmbassador and defending champion of theAbsa Cape Epic, Christoph Sauser.

PotentialEdwinMoses commented: “I have seen the

work of our projects globally and am alwaysinspired by the potential of young leaders.I amglad to see theLaureusYESProgrammetaking the lead in South Africa to raise the

aspirations of youth leaders through sport.”MornéduPlessis continued, “Today’sYES

Programme graduates embody the spirit ofLaureus. They are South Africa’s sportsleaders of tomorrow who will be changing

the world around them.”The Cape Town YES Programme gradu-

ates are Mziyanda Matiwane, Ferdill Vilan-der, TaahirahMatthews, Lamees Solomons,Ashley Meyer and Charl Jensel. YES Pro-

gramme graduation ceremonies will followin Durban and Johannesburg.The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation

has helped to improve the lives of more than10 600 young people.
