club house in Duncan Street, this time withyoung experts and volunteers from the com-munity teaching them kickboxing, karate, dance and soccer.“This is just something we are offering to
all kids to keep them busy and active,” saysRicky Vigeland, a parent who is the drivingforce behind the programme. He says anychild is welcome to attend, as long as theybring something to eat, lots of water and we-ar comfortable clothes.
Life skillsHe says the programme costs nothing, but
donations are welcome, especially snacksfor the children and medals or trophies tohand out at the end of the week.Holiday soccer and cricket workshops ha-
ve been very successful in the past with thehelp of dedicated parents and some donati-ons, and Vigeland says the programme notonly teaches children sport skills, but life
skills too, while keeping themoff the streets. From today (Wednesday) to 19 December
dance teacher Chelsea Petersen and her as-sistant Graydon Fortuin will meet the child-ren at 11:00 for a twohour dance fun session. On 18 and 19 December soccer workshops

Gear needed“We are from Kazoku mixed martial arts
dojo Parow and we will bring gloves, head-guards, shins and kicks, but we don’t haveenough for all the kids,” says Biccard. The programme will end with karate on

A total of 47 teams from 20 depots areresponsible for repairing potholesand in at least 80% of the cases the te-
ams meet the City’s own benchmark offixing a pothole within 72 hours of it beingreported. So says the city’s mayoral committee
member for transport for Cape Town (TCT),Brett Herron.“This is a very high standard tomaintain,
given the fact that the city’s road networkcomprises 10 629 kilometres and every inchof it has to be managed by TCT. One mustadmit that it is quite an achievement thatover 80% of potholes are fixed within threedayswhen each of the 47 teams has to repairat least 260 potholes every month.”Residents report at least 250 potholes to
the City’s call centre every week and theother potholes are identified by the supervi-sory staff atTCT’s depots. “AC3 (fault repor-ting notification) is generated for every po-thole that a resident reports via the city’s
fault reporting system. This report is sentto the relevant area depot, which passes iton to the responsible crew to undertake therepairs. This administrative process can ta-ke up to a day, but in most cases it is sortedout within a matter of hours. The team willinspect the site and make the road safe forroad users, either by repairing the potholethere and then or by demarcating the areaif an immediate repair is not possible.“Sometimes delays are caused by incle-
ment weather, the unavailability of asphaltto fix the potholes, or the breakdown ofequipment. However, one of our biggestchallenges is that the wrong information inrelation to the location and address of thepothole is often reflected on the C3 notifica-tion system. In this instance residents cangreatly assist TCT by providing the correctaddresses.’’The city does proactive maintenance
work as well, such as the resealing and re-surfacing of roads to prevent potholes. “The
majority of potholes formwhen water pene-trates the asphalt due to the cracking of theroad’s asphalt surfacing; when roads haveto carry higher volumes of traffic than theywere originally designed to carry; or whenroutine maintenance has not taken placedue to funding availability. Grey water di-scharge onto roads and other sources of wa-ter suchasnaturalundergroundsprings arealso contributing factors.“In the current financial year (2014/15),
TCT will spend nearly R464 million on roadmaintenance, of which R110 million is allo-cated for the repair of potholes. We urge ourresidents to please report potholes to the ci-ty, either by phoning our call centre on 0860103 089 or by using the TCT app (mobile ap-plication). TCT relies on residents to be oureyes and ears on the ground, given the factthat 81% of our road network (that is 8 649kilometers of the overall network of 10 629kilometers) is suburban roads,’’ says Her-ron.

More than 90% of nine-year-old girls in theWestern Cape are now protected againstHPV related cervical cancer. This is the result of an HPV vaccination
campaign organised by the Western CapeGovernment Health in collaboration withlocal primary schools.Western Cape health minister Theuns
Botha stated: “The uptake by all role play-ers of the immunisation has been wonder-ful.HPVrelated cervical cancer is responsi-ble for the death ofmany youngwomen.Wehope that through this vaccination, whenthese young girls are wives and mothers,we will see a significant decline in the inci-
dence of HPV related cervical cancer.“This not only speaks into our goal of im-
proving thewellness of our society, but alsoto the financial implications for householdswho need to care for a family member whois ill. Well done to all those involved inachieving this remarkable coverage.”The HPV campaign took place in two
rounds, the first round saw coverage of 87%whereas the second round inOctober foundthat not only had a number of girls becomeeligible for the vaccination, but manymoreparents signed consent forms thus enablingtheir daughters to bevaccinated. This smallgroup (approximately 13% of the total
group), will receive their booster shot du-ring the 2015 campaign which will take pla-ce in February andMarch and again in Sep-tember and October.Immunisation is available free of charge
at all health facilities and at a number ofpartner organisations. The Human Papillo-mavirus (HPV) immunisation is currentlyonly offered to girls attending publicschools andarenineyears oldduringGrade4. Those parents who wish to have their ol-der daughters vaccinated can consult theirlocal pharmacy. Vaccination remains thesafest method to prevent illness, Bothasays.

An investigation surrounding the deaths of18 senior citizens at Serendipity Home forthe Aged in Panorama has been completedand handed over to the minister of socialdevelopment, Albert Fritz.Pat Lindgren of Action on Elder Abuse,
who was appointed by Fritz in October tolook into the circumstances surroundingthese deaths which took place over a periodof four months, confirmed last week thatthe report was finalised. The office of theminister, however, could
not comment on the report yet, “as the mat-ter is at a very sensitive stage”, said SihleNgobese, spokesperson for the department. He said the minister’s findings will be
made public soon.Serendipity made headlines in October
when it came to light that almost 50% of itsresidents died sinceJune, raisingquestionsabout neglect, the competency of staff, thequality of food andmedical expertise at this
unregistered home that is equipped tohouse 28 elderly, but at one stage had up to36 residents.Lindgren earlier said they were looking
at the medical records of each case individ-
ually and interviewing families of the de-ceased to compile the report.

Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, situated inthe magnificent Paarl valley, has appo-inted award-winning Alicia Giliomee
as its new executive chef.Alicia has worked at a number of five-star
boutique hotels, lodges and spas, as well asat Vergelegen and Laborie Wine Estates, toname but a few. She recently returned fromGauteng where she worked as senior cheflecturer and head of department: professio-nal cookery at The Capital Hotel School, aswell as food and beverage manager at theManhattan Hotel.
Alicia (31) is delighted with her new appo-intment. “I feel at peace being in a kitchenagain. It’s something only a chef will under-stand. A kitchen draws at your heartstringsand becomes one with you. Some might seeit as four walls with a bunch of carrots, fla-mes, noise and industrial equipment. I seeit for the possibility – the lovely people, the
unheard rhythm and blues that the pots andpans play on the stovetops, the flow of ener-gy from the fresh ingredients to the plate, thecolours, the heat – it beats within my heart,”says Giliomee.
With regards to Rhebokskloof, she is exci-ted about the coming season. “It’s always anexciting challenge to start up a new kitchen, but even more rewarding when you workwith a team that shares a common goal.”
The appeal in joining the Rhebokskloofteam was the challenge of training a newteam and being part of the evolution of anicon. Alicia continues: “I’ve had an appreci-ation for good, fresh products and food sincethe age of three when I was only preparedto eat anything after my mum explained thenutritional value to me. Our home was al-ways full of fresh herbs, exciting new foodproductions and classic cakes and bakes. Mymum treated each meal as a special occasi-
on, the last supper, if you wish. No meal wascomplete without beautiful plating, garnish,a crisp tablecloth and fresh flowers on thetable and this were true for everything froma modest sandwich to a classic Coq au Vin.My love for the trade was sparked here. I ini-tially wanted to study as a doctor or archaeo-logist, but once bitten by the culinary bug,you never look back.”
Her goals at Rhebokskloof are to merge theancient collective energy of Rhebokskloofwith food and wine. “Food from terroir to ta-ble, fresh new daily specials while keepingto the classic French traditions and mergingwith our collective South African heritage, which is so much more than just bobotie andkoeksisters.”
She says the biggest obstacle in her job is“shutting down and cooling your jets. Kit-chens have taught me self-discipline, appre-ciation patience and acceptance.”

An interactive new app, Sideways, whichaims to maximise the experience of tou-rists visiting the winelands of the WesternCape, has been launched.
According to Marthinus Botha from iKi-neo, the Cape Town-based consumer eng-agement agency that developed the app, Si-deways is a free app with, offering the enduser the perfect guide to the winelands ofthe Western Cape.
“You can search by keywords, region orfilters, and whether you are looking for awine farm with a fireplace for winterwarmth or a family-friendly, award-win-ning restaurant in a specific area, the appwill give you exactly what you need,” says
Botha. Each wine farm’s profile page in the app
brims with useful information, from ope-ning times, to available wines and evenGPS co-ordinates that seamlessly link toyour smart phone’s own navigation.
“Sideways is a simple, but powerful solu-tion we created to make the winelands ofthe Western Cape more accessible to every-one. It guides visitors to instantly find theperfect adventure, while simultaneouslyboosting the profile of the winelands as aworld class destination to local and inter-national tourists alike,” adds Botha.
Another function that sets the app apartis its updated and themed curated lists, bo-
asting fun line ups and must see activitiescompiled by experts, celebrities and peoplein-the know.
“Not only can users feed off curated lists, but they can also create their own favouri-te experience by adding their most likedwine farms, adventure activities, mealsand estates to personal lists, making it easyto relive or share their good times withothers,” he says.
Judy Lain, chief marketing officer forWesgro, the Western Cape’s official tou-rism trade and investment promotionagency, believes the app will allow visitorsto discover the Cape Winelands with ease.
“The app is not only designed to discover
wine farms and restaurants. It gives tou-rists information needed to discover ad-venture activities like running or cyclingtrails or the best picnic or sundownerspots,” she says.
A big drawcard for the end user is theSideways rewards system whereby visi-tors can check in with their smart phoneat specific wine farms. They will then accu-mulate points which will unlock rewardslike meal discounts, free wine tastings andmore. The app is currently available fordownload on iPhone devices from the AppStore and will be available on Google Playfor Android devices in early 2015.V Visit wesgro.co.za, for more information.

Some people use lego to build dinosaursthat look like spaceships, other use it tobuild houses that look like spaceships.Children will relate to the fact that no
matter what they build, it eventually lookslike a spaceship (really bad spaceshipssometimes, mind you).Nathan Sawaya builds dinosaurs that
look like dinosaurs and houses that looklike houses. His remarkable art is now on show at
V&AWaterfront and is most definitely go-ing to stun onlookers.TygerBurger was invited to the exhibi-
tion during a media launch and it is sureto go down as one of themost jaw-droppinglaunches of all time.It features up to 70 sculptures created
from more than a million Lego bricks bythis American artist.Tickets to the exhibition, which ends on
28 February, are available from Com-puticket at R140 for adults andR95 for kids.Entry for children under two is free.
Famous Roman statues made of lego is even more beautiful than those made of marble.

vie, you are in themovie. You don’t hear thesound, you feel it,” he says. The cinema was transformed to include a
floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall Imaxscreen, superior acoustical treatment andImax’s projection and sound technology.Imax’s cutting-edge projection design and
sound technology makes audiences feel as ifthey are in the film.Giovanni Dolci from the Imax Corporati-

One can almost imagine a group of eventplanners brainstorming in a dark roomabout what Canal Walk shopping centrewill be bringing to shoppers this festive sea-son.“I’ve got an idea,” exclaims one.“We get an Ice World with a giant ice
slide!”Another says that Canal Walk does that
every year. The first responds: “I know! But this year
we have a truly giant slide! Forty meters?Bah! This yearwe build one that’s 80meterslong! The longest in Africa!”Everyone around the table nods in ap-
proval.“Yes! Now the children can wait for their
parents to finish and not the other wayaround! Let’s add a few smaller ones forthem – say a 15 and a 10 meter slide. Every-one is happy,” says another. The event planners pat each other on the
back. All in a days work!Last week the Ice Slide Wonderland
opened to an eager public.Up until 11 January from 10:00 to 22:00 an
enchanting Centre Court will resemble theNorth Pole (minus freezing temperatures,
polar bears and glacial drift). With the way Canal Walk ups the ante
every year it would not be wholly surpris-ing if these make an appearance nextChristmas.”This yearCanalWalkwill be an icy play-
ground for everyone from tiny tots to dar-ing thrill-seekers,” says marketing manag-er Vanessa Herbst.“We wanted to provide a really memora-
ble experience for the adults and older teensas well. We’re not talking about a tameslide. This 80 meter long slide will take theriders up, down and around the circumfer-ence of the Centre Court, and through somefun tunnels.”If sliding is not for you then you can go
into the special “snow play area” and enjoysomething that looks like snow, but isn’t.So postpone your plans to travel to Scan-

The City of Cape Town has made it clearthat solicitation of Christmas donations bymunicipal staff is forbidden. Any contribu-tions are purely voluntary.“The City of Cape Town would like to ad-
vise residents that the solid waste manage-ment department enforces a policy whichstrictly forbids its personnel from askingresidents for ‘Christmas boxes’ and solici-ting any donations. Staff have been remin-ded that this practice is prohibited,” saidmayco member for utility services, ErnestSonnenberg.“If, however, residents believe that excel-
lent service has been provided, they are ofcourse at liberty to give a voluntary donati-on to staff as a gesture of thanks and good-will, but under no circumstances shouldthey be approached and asked for money.
“City staff are appropriately remunera-ted. It would be appreciated if residentscould report any incidents of intimidationby City staff to the call centre on 0860 103089 during office hours. Apart from the da-te, time, and place, a vehicle registrationnumber should be provided so that the cul-prits can be identified. Such reports will beinvestigated immediately and, where resi-dents are willing to testify, the city will beable to take disciplinary action against theoffenders.Refuse collection services will remain

As an avid animal lover, thephotograph of the starvingpuppy sickened me for severalreasons (Lewenskiekie, 3December).
The caption reads “Ek soeknet kos” and further on“babahondjie kyk net ander-pad”.
This was all happening whilepolice were looking for perpe-trators “in ’n misdaad opera-sie”.
Whoever owns this dog – ifanyone – is a criminal.
I cannot, for the life of me,think why you would publishsomething like this. To whatend?
If your photographer was sotouched by this puppy’s plight– take it to the SPCA and thenrather publish a before andafter picture when it has beentaken care of, rehabilitated andput in a home where peoplewill give it the love it soobviously needs.
Take R50 out of your walletif have to.
The only reason this puppyis standing so still and “pos-ing” for the photographer isbecause the poor thing hasnowhere to run.
As an animal lover, I am ofthe conviction that animalsand humans all have rights.Human babies depend on theirparents, young puppies dependon the people who own them.
And this picture had thesame effect on me as if youhad published a picture of anewborn baby dumped in arubbish bin. No regard.

I would like to respond to therecent letters about guns by P.van Wyk and Charl van Wyk.Both claim more guns in thehands of “good” people willlimit crime, which is of course
a myth.I follow their tirade in most
newspapers. Both are alsopro-death penalty activists. Itseems their whole outlook onlife is one of anger, hatred andvengeance.
Charl was the guy who hadhis gun in the St James Churchmassacre in 1993 claiming thelives of 11 people. He claims hislittle gun prevented a biggerdisaster, but most of us believeit was only the hand of God.Those evil folks had biggerguns and even hand grenades.
I once read that Charlpropagates the fallacy thatbecause Simon Peter carried asword, the weapon of Biblicaltimes, we must all also carryguns to protect us.
But most of us believe ourMaster taught us to put oursword away because “those wholive by the sword will die bythe sword”.
If we look at the misery anddevastation guns are causing allover the globe, no sane personwill instigate more fear intosocieties by telling us all tocarry guns. It is wholly unreal-istic and dangerous.
If God cannot protect us,what can? Guns? Anyone thatsupports the death penalty andviolence is himself a potentialmurderer.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Daarop volg Eenmaal ietsdappers.
In 2012 verskyn Ferreira se bekroondejeugverhaal, Tot siens, koning Arthur.

A magician, stilt walker, ventriloquist, un-der-water escape artist and sound engineerhas developed a persona to combat crime inthe Goodwood area which has earned himthe title of most accomplished neighbour-hood watch member.Rory MacKay, aka Inspector Gadget, has
state-of-the-art tools on him and in his Gadg-et Mobile - an eight-year-old Chana Star 1.3lvan - but says he uses most of them for oneof his day job as entertainer. In his sparetime, they help be the eyes and ears for thepolice and to serve his community.“It all started with a motorcycle accident
a couple of years ago. I was onmyway homefrom Camps Bay, where I was entertainingas a robot, so I was dressed in full combatgear.“A vehicle with a trailer cut in front of me
and I collided with the trailer.
“People who were staying in the bushesnearby were on the scene first. They sawthat my hand was basically off and usedcardboard from the bushes to put aroundmyarm and hand. Then a doctor stopped at thescene in a private vehicle. A lady also ap-peared fromnowhere andwrapped her scarfaround my wrist,” Rory recalls. He remembers waking up in the hospital,
with his hand “wired back on” and beingable to move his fingers. He says there aremany things around this
incident that has yet to deal with, but a de-sire to help other people was born.“That is also why I do the gadgeting stuff,
because it makes me a little bit stronger, emotionally as well. I do have clinical de-pression, but when I am in my character asGadget, I am fine.”Today he has a reconstructedwrist and re-
gained 80% use of his arm and hand.“For my day job I always need things like
my leatherman andmy torch. Those two aremy favourite gadgets. Once I take my torchout it lasts for up to 18 hours, it is a properR4 000 fireman’s torch.”He also has a whole lot of stuff in his van.“Anything can happen when I am on the
road. There’s a first aid kit, night visionequipment, a chain saw, paintball marker,a dash-mounted video camera, fire and roadbreakdown gear, a spade, an axe, emergencyentry tools, fire extinguishers, jumper ca-bles, cones, a 4-meter collapsible ladder andbits and bobs and gadgets I carry with me.I also have a proper fireman’s helmet.“If I get to a scene, where an officer might
be standingwith his blue lights flashing anda flat torch, I will stop there, put my hazardson and ask if they need assistance. I will putmy cones out and my torch will be working. They will say: ‘Oh you are quite prepared, you are like the gadget man!’ Yes, I am thegadget man. You know Jim Carrey, inspec-tor Gadget? Well that’s me.”When patrolling, Rory also wears special
fire and stab retardant gloves, so that he canhelp in a situation without hurting himself.Buthe stays away fromconflict situations.“We are there to observe and I believe that
visibility is a deterrent.”To better his surveillance when patrol-
ling, he has a CCTV camera on top of his vanwith a screen that pops down on the inside. He also uses a GoPro camera on a helmet.“If I approach a situation that seems suspi-
cious, it can be recorded.“The neighbourhood watch is not sup-
posed to become involved in skirmishes. Butin order to get a closer look, to be able to in-form the police what is going on, we need tomake an approach in a tacticalmanner. Andthat is one of the reasons why I wear camou-flage, and not the high-viz vest, because Ican’t hide away in a high-viz vest” he says.Since he was a child, Rory was interested
in the art of magic and inventions. He performed tricks from the age of five
and after completing his studies, he workedas an entertainer on a floating casino on anold war ship. Then he joined the Brian Boswell road-
show as, amongst other things, a flying tra-peze artist and stunt man.He does not like boasting about the gadg-
ets he invents, but to shared the Gadget Mo-bile’s self-starter with TygerBurger. This gadget is a central locking remote
“with a little extra”. After the van is un-locked with the remote, Rory says: “Start!”,and the engine switches on. Once ordered to“Switch off!”, the engine cuts out.The secret, he says, is a little Asian tech-
nology and a little Inspector Gadget magic.
With the help of gadgets, Rory MacKay hasinvented a persona to combat crime and helpthe community.
Many families will soon be preparing for those longdrives to a holiday destination. And, says Motor Industry Workshop Association
chairperson Les McMaster: “Keeping the children safeand entertained is an important part of the trip.”He says it is essential when travelling with young
children to ensure car seats are properly secured. Sta-tistics show up to 70% of car seats are incorrectly in-stalled. Parents must also ensure the seat is the age-ap-propriate size and children big enough to use the nor-mal seat belts are buckled in at all times.“Children, especially toddlers, get fidgety when sit-
ting still for more than two hours. It is important tostop at regular intervals to give everyone a chance tostretch their legs.Making sure the car is in top condition ahead of the
drive also needs to be a priority. McMaster recom-mends looking out for pre-holiday safety check specialsoftenofferedbyworkshops aheadof theholiday season. He also reminds drivers that every car should con-
tain a breakdown kit with a flashlight in the event ofan accident or breakdown after dark, and a fullycharged phone.Dealing with bored and grumpy children on a road
trip can be challenging. He offers these helpful tips:. Pack snacks in the car to reduce hours wasted at
often crowded roadside restaurants along the way.Juice boxes, cereal bars and biltong are always a goodidea for hungry little people.
. Pack lots of water to prevent dehydration, andwet-wipes to clean sticky hands and spills.
. Revisit the traditional car games of 21 Questions,Eye Spy and or Numberplate Cricket.
. If these don’t appeal, smartphones and tablets areloadedwith games to appeal to a range of ages, andwiththe increase in educational games, could even teachyour child a new skill by the time you reach your desti-nation.
. Audio books are also a great idea. Make sure topick something that appeals to the whole family.

Hot Water frontman Donovan Copleywafts into the WP Media office like afresh of breath air.
His calming presence is violently juxta-posed to his vibrant outfit or “colourgemors” as he calls it, but then, the CapeTown singer says he loves colours, andmorespecifically, loves mixing them.“I like tomixmusical genres and colours,”
says Donovan. He is also passionate about South African
rhythms and loves finding crossover points.Think Ghoema meets Sakkie and you’re onthe right track. The rest of his band reflects this perfectly.
While members change, they always comefrom very different music genres.Readers may be familiar with HotWater’s
single, “Wamkelekile”, which was used intheAmericanFilmBlended, and is currentlyenjoying high rotation on local radio sta-tions, but a quick listen to one of his albumswill show that there’s much more to Dono-van’s music.
Township feel“I think at the heart of it, I’m really a folk
musician, but I happen to come from SouthAfrica.”When askedwhere his ideas aboutmixing
cultural references come from, Donovansimply points to heart.“When I started to play guitar, sometimes
the things I played just sounded sort of town-ship-style and that’s what I felt.” He says hismusic and his band came from an explora-tion on what it felt like “to be me”.His new album is a continuation of that
exploration. Donovan will be releasing Son-goma (sic) at Kirstenbosch on Sunday 28 De-cember.“I think it’s a real stamp of the sound that
I’vedevelopedor exploredwith the last threealbums.”The album name comes from a conversa-
tion Donovan had with a stranger one day.He was looking for a word that would de-scribe who he is, what he does and his life’spurpose. He was giving an African womana lift and she pointed out that the beads onhis wrist are oftenworn by sangomas or nat-ural healers. He felt like he could relate.“Songs sort of come from an invisible
place, so where is it that you go to collect asong?” For Donovan, there’s a transforma-tive aspect to writing music so he said: “Iguess you can call me a songoma.”
He describes his “hybrid”word as fun andcheeky, which perfectly encapsulates hismusic. From a production side, he says he’s also
taken a step forward, working with two pro-ducers, including Aron Turest-Swartz, afounding member of Freshlyground.“Aron really got, and gets what it is I’m
doing.”He recorded at Monte Bello Studio and
says working with producers gave him thespace to focus on the delivering the music.“I think it’s distilled HotWater,” Donovan
says of the new album. He says the concertat Kirstenbosch will also reflect that.
Founding venueFanswill beable tohearold favourites like
“Bush Fire” alongside songs from the newalbum, including an Afrikaans song, “Voor-trekker”.“We’re going to have fun, that’s all I can
guarantee,” he says.Donovan says he loves Kirstenbosch. He
launched his first album,Home, at the venuein 2006 and he’s played three shows theresince.“Kirstenbosch is very close to my heart
and was really part of almost founding whatI do.”Hot Water will be playing at Kirstenbosch
as part of the Summer Sunset concert series.V Tickets cost between R75 and R100 and are available at www.webtickets.co.za. For more informationabout Hot Water, visit www.hotwater.co.za.V Donovan visited the Orange Couch to give readersa taste of his new album. The Danny Abrahams Ex FootballersFund is the birth of a project aiming toassist old players who are in dire need
of financial assistance.Ivan Jack (Elsies River) and Douglas Ka-
relse (Kraaifontein) are themasterminds be-hind the fund and are trying to relieve somepressure off their former teammates.Jack played for Elsies River from 1970 to
1992 and Douglas played professional soccerfor Cape Town Spurs from 1970 to 1988.“We applied to register the fund as a NPC
(non-profit company) some four months agoandwegot thegreenlight lastweek.Thiswillreally help us in our cause to approach com-panies and individuals to sponsor us in anyway they see fit,” said Jack.Former Cape Town Spurs star Danny
Abrahams was the initial spur for the fund.Abrahams, who struggles financially andhas Alzheimers, has benefited greatly fromhis friends.“It’s difficult to see howyour former team-
mate struggles. Dougie and I said we can’tjust sit back and watch him and other play-ers struggle theway they do.We felt the urgeto jump in and help,” Jack says.“It’s a great feeling, helping them in wha-
tever way we can. Every now and then wewill host a dance and raise a bit of moneyfor these chaps. We are hoping to get somesponsors in thenewyear to assist us in bette-ring their lives.“Having said that, we are very positive we
can get some sponsors on board, there is so-me interest from companies and individualswanting to get involved but we had to waitto get registered as aNPC. Now that we havethe papers, it is all systems go. We will also
approach Safa and see if they can help us inany way possible,” he said. The fund committee will also have a
monthly meeting and see who they can as-sist in that given month.“Sometimeswewill just go and have a cup
of tea and chat about the good old days. Itis truly heart warming to help these guysand see how thankful they are. This is whywe dowhatwe do. To be there for our friendsand help make life just a little bit better onegood deed at a time,” said Karelse.Phone Ivor Jack on 083 241 5847 of Douglas
Karelse on 084 286 1292 to get involved withthe fund or make any contributions.

SAREL BURGER
tjie-sege Montrose (112) druipstert huistoe gestuurnáveral stewige bydraes deurGiovanni Hulley (4/20), Dillon Verreyne
(44) enChristiaanMocke (34*).

vaart by Hobie-strand op Plettenbergbaaien eindig dit by Santos-strand in Mossel-baai, 188,5 km verder. Die strand-kontrole-punte is by Nature’s Valley, The Waves,Brenton-on-Sea, Swartvlei, Wildernis,Glentana, Grootbrakrivier en Kleinbrakri-vier.
Dag twee se skof is 86km.
disionele aandresies vind vanjaar byStruisbaai plaas.
Die spannemoet by Onrus, Kleinmond, Pringlebaai enGordonsbaai aandoen voordat hulleStrand se kant toe mik.

Sports facilities across the Cape are fall-ing prey to the acts of brazen vandalsand thieves.
A total of 55 sports complexeswere vandal-ised and burgled between April and Novem-ber. A staggering 217 incidents were report-ed during this period, the city confirms.
Sports clubs and facility managementcommittees are calling on the city to step upsecurity, as they fear the continuous crimi-nal activities may stifle or end operations atthe organisations and facilities.
Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the RygateLocal Football Association (LFA) whichcalls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Ry-lands its home, says vandals stripped the fa-cility in the first week of October – only acouple of weeks after the end of the footballseason. He claims the damage amounts toR200 000, a cost they cannot cover.
“The interior of the clubhouse wasstripped bare. All the cabling and wiringwas removed. The wiring of the floodlightswas also removed and the electricity box re-moved and damaged,” Bailey says.
Similarly, chairperson of the Metropoli-tan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropoli-tan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hitat the end of October. The fa-cility was stripped to resem-ble a shell and the organisa-tion had to replace the tro-phies and medals for itsannual prizegiving days be-fore the event.
“Everything was fine dur-ing the season, except for theodd burglary, but when theseason ended and there wasless activity at the facility, the criminals pounced.
“The MFMC is constantlyreminded that it is not theowner of the facility, but on-ly the custodians. Yet the owner, the city, doesn’t take responsibility for its assets.”
In local sporting circles, Weitz adds, therehas been talk of several facilities being van-dalised over the last couple of months.“There was a time when security guardswereplacedat the facility, but they informedus their contract had come to anendand thatwas the end of security,” he explains.
“The city spends millions upgrading andmaintaining facilities, so I believe theyshouldprotect it or theworkwill beuseless.”
TygerBurger has reportedon incidents at the WesbankSports Complex, Durban-ville SportsComplexandRu-yterwacht Sports Complex, while its sister publicationCity Vision reported on inci-dents at the Gugulethu andPhilippi swimming pools.
Furthermore, it’s othersister publication, People’sPost has reported on burgla-ry and vandalism at severalsports facilities across thepeninsula over the last cou-ple of months. These include
the Stephan Reagan, Rocklands and Strand-fontein sports complexes, and Swartklip In-door Sports Centre in Mitchell’s Plain, theHoosain Parker Sports Complex in Park-wood and the Johnson Road Sports Com-plex. Burglary and vandalism were also re-ported at clubhouses at Kraaifontein SportsComplex.
Despite the number of incidents, the city
says it cannot provide continuous securitypresence.
Mayco member for community servicesand special projects, Belinda Walker, says a“limited budget” of R36m was allocated forsecurity in the department budget.
“The department has had to rationalisethe use of security personnel at some of itsfacilities to remain within the allocatedbudget in the current financial year,” shesays.
“The departmentmanages a large numberof public facilities across the city and hasidentified hotspots where facilities are par-ticularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism– security personnel will be present at thesefacilities. It is closelymonitoring these facil-ities to find the most effective and financial-ly sustainable options for securing them.”
But security guards aren’t the only option,Walker adds, as the city has invested consid-erably in fences and alarms. It is also work-ing to create partnerships with communityorganisations such as neighbourhoodwatches to help deter theft and vandalism.

VANDALISM: LACK OF SECURITY GUARDS SEES MUNICIPAL FACILITIES BEING STRIPPED
