Venice is world famous for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 117 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the city is built are connected by about 400 bridges. In the old centre, the canals serve the function of roads, and every form of transport is on water or on foot.
You can ride gondola there. It is the classical Venetian boat which nowadays is mostly used for tourists, or weddings, funerals, or other ceremonies. Now, most Venetians travel by motorised waterbuses which ply regular routes along the major canals and between the city’s islands. The city has many private boats. The only gondolas still in common use by Venetians are the Traghetti, foot passenger ferries crossing the Grand Canal at certain points without bridges.

Once a fisherman named Batara Guru Sahala lived in Batakland. One day, he caught a fish. To his surprise, he found that the fish could talk! It begged Sahala to set it free. Sahala did accordingly.
As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She was so beautiful that the fisherman fell in love with her at once. He asked her to marry him. The woman agreed to marry Sahala. However, she told him that he must never let out the secret that she was once a fish. Sahala promised her that he would not tell anyone about it.
They were happily married, and had two daughters. Every morning, Sahala went out fishing. His daughters would bring him his lunch. One day, however, instead of bringing the food to their father, the girls ate it. When Sahala learnt what they had done with his meal, he got very angry. He shouted at them, saying, “You behaved exactly like the daughters of a fish.”
The girls did not understand what their father meant. They went home and asked their mother about it. When they told her what he had said, she was very annoyed. Although Sahala apologized to her later, she would not forgive him for breaking his promise.
Then, the earth began to tremble, and volcanoes started to erupt. The earth cracked to form a big hole. People said that this hole became Lake Toba.

Besides, he did not see any people.

Jerry was riding his motorcycle home late one night when he saw a young girl waiting by a bus stop. How’s life? Thanks for the letter telling about your holiday activities. Here, I want to tell you about mine.
Last holiday, my family and I went to the beach. We wanted to release the baby sea turtles from the Goa Cemara shore.
Goa Cemara is located in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The walk to the beach was pretty far, but very shady. It felt like we were in the Twilight movie scenes, a great for photo shoots! We adopted 5 baby turtles. Each turtle cost 10,000 rupiahs. The baby turtles were just hatched. They were so cute. I chose my turtle and named it Anjo. My sister Fia also chose one and named it Wora. Anjo and friends were very skittish in the box, and then right when we set them in the sand, they immediately got still. They did not make any movements.
We entered Anjo in the race. We were told by our guide that before the race began, we should face the little babies south so that when they came out to shore at night, they would remember which way to go. Cool, isn’t it? And the race began. I could see how energetic they were. What I noticed was that when they hit the water and were pushed back by the waves, the turtles ran faster as if knowing what was ahead of them. They were just about to get swept away by the ocean. It was my unforgettable experience with the baby sea turtles.

OPERATION AND USE
BEFORE FIRST USE
Before using your coffeemaker for the first time, wash decanter/lid and removable
filter basket using a mild, non-abrasive detergent and water. Rinse each thoroughly.
Follow Steps 3 – 5 (Brewing Coffee) using water, to clean the inside.
BREWING COFFEE
1. Lift the lid for filter basket and water reservoir access. Insert 4-Cup paper or permanent filter into the removable filter basket.
2. Add desired amount of coffee, referring to the Coffee Measurement Chart. (See Page 7) Shake lightly to level coffee. Be sure the filter is centered.
3. Fill the decanter with cold water to desired capacity as marked on the side of the decanter (1 cup = 5 oz). To brew 4 cups of coffee, fill the decanter to the 4-cup line.
4. Pour the water into the water reservoir. NOTE: For easy and accurate filling, refer to cup markings on the water windows. Place the empty decanter onto the warming plate.
5. Plug the cord into the electrical outlet and turn your coffeemaker switch to the “ON” position. When the coffee stops flowing, the brewing cycle is complete. NOTE: The warming plate will keep your coffee piping hot until you turn your coffeemaker off.
6. After contents have cooled, carefully remove the filter basket and discard the used grounds and paper filter or rinse clean the permanent filter if you use it. Rinse the removable filter basket and replace.
7. To make another pot of coffee, repeat Steps 1 – 6.
8. Be sure to turn your coffeemaker off when the decanter is empty and you are no longer using it. Please unplug the power cord when not in use.

A stranger dressed in bright clothes arrived and said he could rid Hamelin of the rats. At night, the stranger began playing a tune on his flute, drawing all the rats out of the houses and barns and into the river, where they drowned.
The Mayor would not pay the piper because he said that playing a flute was not worth the reward. He ordered the piper to leave Hamelin.
But the piper came back one day, and started to play his flute. This time, all the children followed him, and he left the village towards the mountains. Suddenly, a cave opened in the mountain and the piper and all the children went in. The cave closed behind them and the children were never seen again in Hamelin.

The culture of Asia is human civilization in Asia. The ethnic groups have adapted to mountains, deserts, grasslands, and forests. On the coasts of Asia, the ethnic groups have adopted various methods of harvest and transport. Some groups are primarily hunter-gatherers, some practice transhumance (nomadic lifestyle), others have been agrarian/rural for millennia and others are becoming industrial/urban. Some groups/countries of Asia are completely urban (Singapore and Hong Kong). The colonization of Asia was largely ended in the twentieth century, with national drives for independence and self-determination across the continent.

Hot Air Balloons

People first experienced flying by using a hot air balloon. The first-ever recorded hot air balloon flight was in France in the summer of 1783. Two brothers, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfer, experimented with paper models heated by hot air at their family’s paper factory. On the day of their launch, thousands of people turned out to watch the Montgolfer balloon take off. The French King Louis XVI was among the crowd. The balloon’smaiden flight was a great success. Hot air ballooning became an instant national triumph for France. The French nation loved the Montgolfers, who were seen as a shining example of the country’s new age of adventure and invention.
However, the Montgolfer brothers were not on board their balloon. The passengers in the hot air balloon included a duck, a sheep and a chicken! A couple of months later, on 21 November 1783, two brave men called Marquis Francois d’Arlandes and Pilatre de Rozier entered the history books as the world’s first people to take safely to the air.
The Montgolfer’s design of a hot air balloon is similar to the designs still in use today. Hot air balloons work on a very basic scientific theory. Warm air rises up through cooler air. Warm air in the balloon makes the hot air balloon rise up through the cooler air surrounding it. To stay airborne, the balloon needs to remain hotter than the surrounding air. As the air inside the balloon cools, the balloon drops slowly towards the ground. A gas-powered burner underneath the balloon warms up the air inside the balloon and makes it rise again.

Firefly or Lightning Bug Photinus pyralis
The Pyralis firefly (also known as the lightning bug) is a common firefly in North America. This partly nocturnal, luminescent beetle is the most common firefly in the USA.
At night, the very end (the last abdominal segment) of the firefly glows a bright yellow-green color. The firefly can control this glowing effect. The brightness of a single firefly is 1/40 of a candle. Fireflies use their glow to attract other fireflies. Males flash about every five seconds; females flash about every two seconds. This firefly is harvested by the biochemical industry for the organic compunds luciferin (which is the chemical the firefly uses for its bioluminescence).
This flying insect is about 0.75 inch (2 cm) long. It is mostly black, with two red spots on the head cover; the wing covers and head covers are lined in yellow. Like all insects, it has a hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two antennae, compound eyes, and a body divided into three parts (the head, thorax, and abdomen).
Both the adults and the larvae are carnivores. They eat other insects (including other fireflies), insect larvae, and snails.

She began to play a sweet tune on her flute, and the children ran to the cage. “Is that you playing, Turtle?” they asked, their eyes wide with wonder. “Yes,” Turtle said. She kept on playing, for she could see the children were delighted. At last she stopped. “I can dance even better than I can play,” she said. “Would you like to see?” “Oh, please!” the little boy cried. “I’ll show you how to dance and play at the same time,” said Turtle, “but you must open the cage. There is no room in here.”
So the little child opened the cage and Turtle began to dance and play. The children laughed and clapped their hands, for never had they seen such a wonderful thing. Then Turtle stopped. “Don’t stop!” the children cried. “Oh,” Turtle groaned, “my legs are stiff. If I could just walk a little bit to loosen them ...” “Don’t go too far,” the little girl cautioned. “Come right back.” “Never fear,” said Turtle. “You wait right here.” Turtle crawled off toward the jungle. The moment she was out of sight, she raced all the way back to her house. Nobody ever found Turtle again. But to this day, if you stretch your ear, you can listen to the sweet sound of a flute in the forest.

Hay fever can occur all year round but it is traditionally worse in the spring months when the pollen count in the air is high. Hay fever is a common name for allergic rhinitis – meaning an allergy in the nose. The allergic reaction causes the nasal passages to become inflamed and produce more mucous. Some of the common symptoms are : sneezing; runny or stuffy nose; itchy ears ,nose and throat; red, itchy and watery eyes and sometimes headaches.
Tips to try and reduce hay fever symptoms:
1: Stay indoors where possible on windy and stormy days.
2: Smear Vaseline on the inside of your nose to help stop the air-borne pollen touching the lining of your nose.
3: Splash your eyes often with cold water as this tries to flush out any pollen.
4: Try and reduce contact with known allergens. For example –pet fur, flowers, dust etc.
5: Anti-histamine medications in the form of tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops may help alleviate symptoms but you need to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.

Influenza or ‘the flu’ is a serious, painful illness which affects the whole body. Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle aches and pains. In children, symptoms may also include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The infections occur between July-September usually lasting for about five days. Fever and other symptoms usually disappear after that time but a cough and weakness may continue. All symptoms usually gone within a week or two.
According to the influenza specialist group (ISG), vaccination reduces the average person’s chances of catching the flue by up to 80% during the flu season. Vaccination isn’t a guarantee against getting sick but it generally reduces the symptoms. Vaccination is only good for the current year.
Influenza is highly contagious—the influenza viruses can survive for an hour or more in the air in enclosed environments, such as child care centres and schools; for more than eight hours on hard surfaces such as stainless steel and plastics; and up to five minutes on hands after transfer from other surfaces. It happened one weekend while I was at the fairground. I was with my friend Sarah and we were both really excited. The flashing lights and bright colours made everything appear magical. We were having a great time and we had been on most of the rides when Sarah pointed to the big wheel. The sign said “$1 for a two-minute ride”.
At first I wasn’t sure, but Sarah had been on it before. “It only takes two minutes,” she said. “Come on- it’s a really thrilling ride!” A minute later we were in the air. It was like flying! “This is a mazing!” I shouted happily to Sarah.
Then suddenly, there was a loud crash and everything stopped. I was really frightened! Sarah held my hand tightly because she was worried, too. We looked down and saw two mechanics. “Don’t worry,” they shouted. “It won’t take us long to fix it!” So we waited…and waited! At first we were amused. Everyone was running around below us. After a while though, it became scary up there.
Two hours later, the wheel finally started to move again. I was so happy. It had been a long tiring evening. That two-minute ride had turned into a two-hour nightmare! (Reading and Writing Targets 2: Student Book, 1999, p. 48)

Mars is a planet that is easy to spot in the night sky. It is called the Red Planet because of its fiery red-orange color.
Mars comes closer to earth than any other planet except venus. At times it comes within 35 million miles (56 million km). It is similar to Earth in some respects. A day on Mars is only slightly longer than our own day. The planet has seasons like the Earth, only they are almost twice as long as ours. It has ice caps at the north and south poles, like Earth. They shrink in summer and grow again in winter.
However, Mars is different from Earth in most other ways. It lies farther from the Sun and is much colder. Temperatures do not often rise above freezing, even in summer. It has only a very thin atmosphere, made up mainly of canbon dioxide gas.

Once there was a town called Hamelin. The only thing wrong was it was full of rats. They destroyed people’s farms, houses and food supplies. The people went to the mayor to solve the problem.
One day, a strange man came to town. The stranger offered to get rid off the rats. In return, the mayor would give him money.
The Pied Piper was a strange-looking man. He wore a tall, pointed hat, and a long, flowing cape. He played a long, shiny flute. The piper began to play in the town square.
Rats came running from everywhere. They came out if the houses and the shops. The Pied Piper played up and down the streets. Everywhere he went, the rats followed him. The Pied Piper led the rats to the river. The rats all jumped into the river and drowned.
The people cheered. They were happy to be rid of the rats. But the mayor changed his mind about the money. He refused to give any money at all to the Pied Piper. “Give me the money your promised,” he said. “If you don’t, I’ll play a different tune you will not like,” he warned. But the mayor still refused. The Pied Piper picked up his flute and began to play a new tune.
Once the flute was played, all the children in the town were like being hipnotised. These children followed the Pied Piper wherever he was playing the flute. When The Pied Piper reached the river bank, he stopped walking, but the children were still walking toward the river.
Fear of their safety, the mayor begged The Pied Piper to let the children go and paid the money he promised. All of sudden the children awoke and their parents rushed to get their beloved children.
The Pied Piper was happy to get the money and the mayor finally learned a lesson from this. (Addison Wesley ESL Student book, 1992, p.39)
