1.IDENTIFICAÇÃO DO PROJETO

Referência do Projeto: UID/MAR/00350/2013 Investigador Responsável: Maria João Anunciação Franco Bebianno Instituição Proponente: Universidade do Algarve (UAlg) Data de Início: 01-01-2015 Data de Fim: 31-12-2017 Financiamento Concedido: € 150.000,00

2.RESUMO DOS TRABALHOS DESENVOLVIDOS

RNI Exploration of satellite-derived ocean color data with delineation of ocean regions. 2 field campaigns with IH and MARE off Portuguese coast. Implementation of regional algorithms for Chl-a retrieval from MERIS/ENVISAT. Theoretical studies for marine optics for three-dimensional modelling of sea-surface reflectance factor. TRIOS/RAMSES radiometric system purchased. Development of a pre-operational modelling system to forecast oil spills trajectories and simulations for the Atlantic Ocean. Super-ensemble backtracking simulation of EMSA’s CleanSeaNet detections. Field campaigns at RF (nutrients, chlorophyll and ss budgets), circulation model and dispersion tracers run. Methodology to link fieldwork, modelling and satellite imagery. Footprint of sewage discharges from 1.5year data. Analyses of planktonic microbes at RF and shelf and evaluation of structure and activity of planktonic microbial assemblages and climate change on microbial structure and dynamics. 10-year data comparison to assess long-term changes in microbial populations. Linkages between marine microbial food web and invasive species. Critical swimming speeds experiments for larvae from distinct taxonomic groups. Metal concentrations and fluxes associated with upwelling filaments in SW Algarve. Matlab routines for quality control of SIMPATICO monitoring data.Current-meters deployed at ~20 m water depth along the SW Portuguese coast. 8 pressure sensors deployed and field salinity measurements in tidal channels of GD. 2 month measurements controlling fleur de sel production. Atmospheric-flow simulations for studying mountain-drag amplification. RNII closely mirrors ICSU initiative, with focus on coastal zone and marine components of Earth-System and plays a role in framing the output of other nodes. Ecological data integrated with socio-economic information for building models that provide scenarios for changes caused by human uses and perceptions as well as climate change. The main achievements were: linkage between river discharge and coastal fisheries; implementation of process-based 2D model to analyze the effect of different sea-level rise rates using RF; review of application of Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response framework to analyze coastal social-ecological systems, beach erosion and quality issues in Portugal, Spain and Italy; evaluation of marine subareas of Europe using life-history and trophic levels of commercial fish; application of bio-optical parameters as a tool to detect changes in phytoplankton community; implementation of MSFD using remote sensing; developing a multi-criterion index of flood exposure, socio-economic conditions and infrastructures to assess urban vulnerability in river-mouth systems; evaluate perception of environmental and economic values of beach end users at Cadiz, including willingness to contribute to coastal management; identify the accepted management plans and define disaster risk reduction measures by assessing risk perception at communities living with risk at the coast; monitoring urban storm waters and impact on coastal ecosystems and modelling to forecast effects of multistressors in Yangtze. RNIII prediction of hazard through development of early warning systems at coastal area;

identification and quantification of barrier islands response to storm impacts over decadal to century timescales; quantification of sediment transport and morphodynamic evolution of various settings (GD estuary ebb delta, beach shoreface, embayed environments and rocky shores). Impacts, records and models of sea level change for long-term morphodynamic evolution of coastal environments (RF, Adra, Sado deltaic system, GD), climate change and anthropogenic interventions; characterisation of rocky shore evolution induced by sea level change; extension of regional NE Brazilian sea-level curve to ages older than 8 kyr; rate of coastal bars’ accretion in Santa Catarina and Paraná states for validation of a new dating tool; environmental reconstruction of the vegetation within river basin over the last 12 kyr (Cape Hatteras); S. Portuguese Zone Basin evolution and associated karstic system; multi-disciplinary characterisation (palynology, thermal maturation, biomarker and source rocks) of the Meso-Cenozoic sedimentary basins. In RNIV different activities were developed: toxicity of deep-sea sediments and mineral deposits of interest to deep-sea mining and novel ecotoxicological protocols; risk assessment of sediment plumes generated on mine tailings deposit site, and implications for deep-sea mining; ecotoxicity of rare earth elements and organic wastes used as agricultural soil amendments; NPs and pharmaceuticals impact on marine species as well as use/ efficiency of ecotoxicological endpoints to evaluate ecological status of HMWB; bioassays to evaluate membranes technology efficiency to improve water quality; identification of sources of POPs and prediction of adverse effects in mother-newborn cohort; development of human biomarkers to assess estrogenic/anti-estrogenic effects; biorefinery engineering project development for bioethanol production and evaluation of valuable co-products, to respond to stakeholders, with a sustainable industrial unit, using different agro-industrial wastes; optimization of bioreactor conditions for hetero/mixotrophic microalgae growth and evaluation of added value products; biorefinery development using microalgae carbohydrates in bioethanol production; potential bioactivity of microalgae extracts evaluated in animal cell models; preliminary method for biologic agglomeration of cork granulates; isolation of 2 polyextremophile microalgae from S. Domingos acid mine drainage; synthesis and characterization of metal sulfide NPs and nanocomposites with industrial application, using acid mine as metal feedstock; novel antibodies for 2 grapevine virus (GLRaV-3, GLRaV-1) available to certification and development of molecular tools for screening resistance to viral pathogens.

3. DESVIOS DA PROPOSTA APRESENTADA

The Centre was evaluated as “Very good” in the last evaluation but allocated only 150 000€ for the period 2015-2017, which is lower than when the Centre was evaluated as “good”, despite an increase of 18% in publications. This severe budget cut represents a serious obstacle to the scientific development of the centre especially with respect to: (i) capacity building essential to develop scientific areas ; (ii) renewal of obsolete equipment; (iii) participation in meetings for drafting new research proposals; (iv) organization and hosting of events, meetings, summer schools and symposia; (v) inviting top researchers for seminars; (vi) supporting Early Career Researchers.
