Function of Packing

Proper packing can be extremely important. It has been estimated that as much as 70% of all cargo loss could be prevented by proper packaging and marking.

The real art of packing is to get the contents into a nice, compact shape that will stay that way during the roughest journey.

Transport Packing

Functions: - To protect goods from damage or

loss- To facilitate handling and storage

Bag & Sack

BagBag may be made of gunny, linen, canvas, rubber, cotton, plastic or strong paper (e.g. kraft paper)

SackSack is a large bag usually made of jute.

Carton, Case, Box & Crate

CartonCarton may be made of light but strong cardboard or fiberboard with double flaps and bottoms, fixed by adhesive tapes or metal bands. It is ideal for palletized and containerized consignments.

CaseCase is basically wooden in construction. For extrastrength it may be nailed, battened or passed around with metal strapping. The inside may be lined with various materials (e.g. waterproof paper, tin foil, airtight material) to prevent damage by water, air 0r insects. BoxBox is a small case, which may be made of wood,cardboard or metal, and may have a folding (hinged)lid.

CrateCrate is a case, but one not fully enclosed. It has abottom and a frame, sometimes open at the top.Crates are often built for particular goods, such asmachinery, household appliance and certain foodstuffs.

Drums, Can & Carboy

DrumDrum (Cask, BarrelCask, Barrel) is a cylinder- shaped container for carrying liquids or greasy cargoes. It is usually made of metal, wood or plastic. Certain dry chemicals (non-inflammable) or powders can be packed in cardboard drums.

CanCan (TinTin) is a small metal container for small quantities of paint, oil or certain foodstuffs.

Bale & Bundle

BaleBale is a package of soft goods (e.g. cotton, wool,

sheepskin, carpet etc.) tightly pressed together and

wrapped in a protective material. May be secured

by metal bands.

Pallet & Container

PalletPallet: A large wooden or metal tray or platform for

carrying goods. ContainerContainer: A large metal box of standard size

for transporting goods by road, rail, sea or air. It facilitates loading and unloading by mechanical

handling, thus time is saved.

Sales Packing

Functions: - To aid marketing- To aid advertising, display, easy handling

Letter 1 (Buyer's Packing Requirements)

Dear sirs Thank you for your quotation of May 5. We are

working on it and expect to come a decision about a fortnight.

As specified in our inquiry of March 10, the goods should be packed in seaworthy cases suitable for a long voyage and well protected against dampness, shock and rough handling.

The seller should be liable for any damages to the goods and extra expenses due to improper packing and inadequate protective measures. When you pack the goods, please see to it that the package number, measurement, gross weight, net weight, the words "Keep away from moisture", and the following shipping mark shall be printed with fadeless paint on each package: SIPE / TITC2609 / LONDON / NOS 1-UP upon receipt of the letter, please confirm by fax that you will fulfill there packing instruction. letter 2 Dear Mr. Williams We acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 9

this month together with the enclosed S/C NO.112 in duplicate. but going through the contract ,we find that packing clause in it is not clear enough. The relative clause reads "packing: seaworthy export packing, suitable for long distance ocean transportation.

In order to avoid possible future trouble, we

should like to make clear our packing requirements as follows: The tea should be packed in international standard tin boxes of 1 kilo each, 24 boxes to a pallet, 10 pallets in an FCL container. On the outer packing please mark our initial RRC in a diamond, under which are the port of destination and our order number. In addition, handling marks like keep dry, use no hook, should also be stenciled.
