Working Around Utah

WHY DO PEOPLE WORK?

People work to earn money to take care of themselves.

To feel satisfied by completing a job and doing it well.

To contribute to the community and enrich their own lives.

Working Around Utah

Utah workers produce computer

software design web pages edit books manage businesses produce high-tech parts

for space shuttles and space stations.

Utah Workers

Government workers run offices, train in the military, and teach students in public schools and universities.

Utah Workers

Some people are accountants, bankers, mortgage brokers and store clerks.

Utah Workers Provide Services

Tourists appreciate the clean rooms and food served in Utah hotels and restaurants.

Work Outside of the City

Utahns plow, plant and harvest grain & onions, pick fruit, and raise cattle & sheep.

The list goes on and on.

What is Economics?

Economics = the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Basically it is how producing, selling and

buying affects everyone in an area (for example in a state).

Economics affects us all. In a strong economy people have jobs, earn money, save for the future, and can buy the things they need.

What are Utah’s industries?

Government Industries

Government services are some of Utah’s largest industries.

Utah’s federal, state, and city governments hire thousands of workers.

Public school teachers, principals, and other school workers are employed by local government.

Mining Industry

Minerals mined in Utah: copper, gold, silver, uranium, iron, lead, zinc, and salt.

Utah’s fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas

Mining operations pay high wages to Utah workers.

Kennecott Utah Copper mine near Bingham is the largest copper mine in the world!

High-Tech Industry

Utah is a leader in information technology.

Utahn’s were some of the first to develop computer software.

Students from the U of U and BYU worked together to develop WordPerfect for PCs.

Tech companies find Utah an attractive place to start their businesses.

Medical Industry

University of Utah Health Science Center is nationally known for its patient care, teaching facilities, and research.

Huntsman Cancer Institute where doctors work to find cures for cancer and improve cancer treatment.

Utah also has a world class Primary Children’s Medical Center.

Space Industry

In the 1960’s the first space shuttles were sent into space.

Utah companies built newer and better rocket parts to help America get to space.

Today Utah companies still contribute to the national space program.

The space shuttle Atlantis benefitted from rocket

technology developed in Utah.

Art & Entertainment Industry

In our capital city you can visit the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the LDS Museum of Church History and Art, and many art galleries.

You can view travelling art exhibits at the Springville Art Museum and the BYU Museum of Art.

Park City Art Festival each August showcases arts & crafts along the streets.

Music & Theater

Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Utah Opera Company

Hale Center Theaters in Salt Lake and Orem

Entertainment in Utah

Sundance Film Festival for independent filmmakers.

Began in 1981, each winter the public views the films at the film festival.

Brings business and celebrities to Utah.

Tourism & Recreation

Utah has an abundance of recreation activities Ski/snowboarding at various ski resorts Recreation at Lake Powell Hiking/camping in Utah’s National Parks Park City Saint George – cycling Local parks (can you think of any?)

Big attraction was the debut of “extreme sports” Snowboarding Moguls Aerials Women’s bobsledding

President Bush came to Utah to open the games.

How do Tourism & Recreation Affect Utah’s Economy?

In 2005, locals and visitors spent $5.8 billion on food, hotels, gas, and entertainment.

This money went to our state’s local and state governments to provide services to the people of Utah.

Tourism provides over 125,ooo jobs for Utahns

Utah is known as one of the most “wired” states most families here have a

computer and are connected to the internet.

The cost of doing business in Utah is lower than other technology hot spots thanks to the lower land and building lease rates.

Livable Environment
