Connecting The Water Supply

About your refrigerator's water supplyThe automatic ice & water dispenser on yourrefrigerator requires a permanent water supplyto function correctly. During installation, you(or a service professional) establish this watersupply by connecting a copper tube from yourhousehold water system to a valve at the rear ofthe refrigerator,

You may have already followed the directions inthe Installation Instructions to connect the water

supply. This information is repeated here for futurereference if you need to relocate your refrigerator.

CAUTION

To avoid property damage:

• Use copper tubing for the water supplyline (plastic tubing is more likely to leak),Manufacturer is not responsible for anydamage if plastic tubing is used for supplyline.

Ensure water supply and installation complywith state and local laws and regulations.

For proper dispenser operation, recommended water supply pressureshould fall between 30 psi and 100 psi.Excessive pressure may cause water filterto malfunction.

What you will need:

,, Access to a cold water line with pressure of30-100 psi. (System supplied with cold wateronly.)

,, Copper tubing with ¼ inch (6.4mm) OutsideDiameter (OD). Length for this tubing is thedistance from the rear of the refrigerator toyour household water supply line plus sevenfeet (2.1 meters).

,, A shut-off valve for the connection between

your household water line and the refrigeratorsupply line.

Do not use a self-piercing shut-off valve.

,, A compression nut and ferrule (sleeve) forthe water supply connection at the rear ofyour refrigerator.

NOTE

A kit is available from your dealer that provides allmaterials for a water supply installation, including25 feet of copper tubing and full instructions.

Automatic ice Water aker/Dispenser 25

Priming the water supply

Your refrigerator's water supply system includesseveral tubing lines, an advanced water filter,a distribution valve bank, and a reserve tank toensure ample supply to the ice and water dispenserat all times. This system needs to be completelyfilled with water when first connected to an external

supply line.

CAUTION

For proper dispenser operation, recommended water supply pressureshould fall between 30 psi and 100 psi.Excessive pressure may cause water filter tomalfunction.

To prime the water supply system:1 Begin filling the tank by pressing and holding

a drinking glass against the water dispenserpaddle.

2 Keep the glass in this position until watercomes out of the dispenser. It may takeabout 11/2minutes.

Continue dispensing water for about threeminutes to flush the system and plumbingconnections of any impurities (stopping toempty the glass as necessary).

NOTE

The water dispenser has a built-in device thatshuts off the water flow after three minutes ofcontinuous use. To reset this shutoff device, simply release the dispenser paddle.

ice maker operation & careThe ice maker, ice bin, and dispenser feedingmechanism are located in the top of the freezercompartment. After the refrigerator is installedproperly and has cooled for several hours, theice maker can produce ice within 24 hours. It cancompletely fill an ice bin in about two days.

The ice maker produces four to six pounds of iceevery 24 hours depending on usage conditions. Iceis produced at a rate of eight cubes every 75 to 90minutes.

Using the ice maker after installation

Before making ice for the first time, be sure toprime the water supply system. Air in new plumbinglines can result in two or three empty ice makercycles. Furthermore, if the system is not flushed, the first ice cubes may be discolored or have anodd flavor.

IMPORTANT

'four ice maker is turned on at the factory so itcan work as soon as you install your refrigerator. If you cannot connect a water supply, turn theice maker's On/Off switch to Off. Otherwise, theice maker's fill valve may make a loud chatteringnoise when it attempts to operate without water.

Turning the ice maker on and off

Ice production is controlled by the ice maker's On/Off power switch. To gain access to the ice maker, pull the extra shelf out (some models). Press theswitch to the "0" position to turn it Off and press tothe 'T' position to turn it On.

NOTE

The ice maker also has a built-in wire signal arm, which automatically stops ice production whenthe ice bin is full. This signal arm should not beused to manually stop the ice maker.

Automatic ice Water aker/Dispenser

IMPORTANT

Small ice cubes or ice chips jamming in theice maker may be a sign that your water filterneeds changing, tf you have a side mounted icemaker you may also experience hollow cubes-- partially frozen cubes with water inside. Whenthese cubes are harvested they break open andspill water over the other ice cubes in the icecontainer, forming a solid mass of ice. As thewater filter nears the end of its useful life and

becomes clogged with particles, less water isdelivered to the ice maker during each cycle. The ice maker can't fill every cube in the icemaker mold, leading to small cubes or chips thatcan get caught between the ice ejector bladesand the stripper. Remember, if your ice makeris jamming with small ice cubes or it's been sixmonths or longer since you last changed yourwater filter - replace the water filter with a newone. Poor quality household water may requirethe filter to be changed more frequently.

Ice maker/dispenser tips,, Ice cubes stored too long may develop

an odd flavor, Empty the ice container asexplained below.

o Occasionally shake the ice container to keepice separated.

,, If your refrigerator is not connected to awater supply or the water supply is turned off, turn off the ice maker by pressing the On/Offswitch.

,, If you need a large quantity of ice at onetime, it is best to get cubes directly from theice container.

,, The following sounds are normal when theice maker is operating:

Motor running

Ice dropping into ice container

- Water valve opening or closing

Ice loosening from tray

Running water

,, When dispensing ice, you will hear asnapping or clicking sound when the icechute opens and closes.

Turn off the ice maker when cleaning thefreezer and during vacations.

If you turn off the ice maker for a tongperiod of time, you should also turn off thewater supply valve.

CAUTION

Chemicals from a malfunctioning watersoftener can damage the ice maker. If thewater supply to your refrigerator is softened,be sure the softener is maintained to workproperly.

Cleaning the ice maker

Clean the ice maker and ice bin at regular intervals, particularly before you take a vacation or move.

To clean the ice maker:

1 Turn off ice production by pressing the icemaker's Off/On switch.

2

3

Remove the ice bin by lifting up and out.

Empty and carefully clean the ice bin withmild detergent. Rinse with clear water. Do notuse harsh or abrasive cleaners.

4 Allow the ice bin to dry completely beforereplacing in the freezer.

5 Remove ice chips and clean the ice bin shelfand the freezer door chute.

6 Replace the ice bin. Press the ice maker'sOff,tOn switch to resume ice production.

Remove and empty the ice storage binif:

= An extended power failure (one hour orlonger) causes ice cubes in the ice storagebin to melt and freeze together, jamming thedispenser mechanism.

• You do not use the ice dispenser frequently.Ice cubes will freeze together in the bin, jamming the dispenser mechanism.

Remove the ice storage bin and shake to loosenthe cubes or clean as explained above.

Automatic ice Water aker/Dispenser 27

CAUTION

NEVER use an ice pick or similar sharpinstrument to break up the ice. This coulddamage the ice storage bin and dispensermechanism.

| iMPORTANTWhen removing or replacing the ice bin, DONOT rotate the auger in the ice bin. If the augeris accidentally rotated, you must realign theauger by turning it in 90 degree turns (see below)until the ice bin fits into place with the drivemechanism. If the auger is not properly alignedwhen replacing the ice bin, the refrigerator willonly dispense Crushed Ice.The freezer door mayalso not close properly causing warm air to leakinto the freezer.

3 Storing Food & Saving Energy

ideas for storing foodsFresh food storage

, Keep the fresh food compartmentbetween 34 ° F and 40 ° F with an optimumtemperature of 37'; R

- Avoid overcrowding the refrigerator shelves, which reduces air circulation and causesuneven cooling.

Fruits and vegetables

,, Store fruits and vegetables in crisperdrawers, where trapped moisture helpspreserve food quality for longer time periods.

Meat

,, Wrap raw meat and poultry securely soleakage and contamination of other foods orsurfaces does not occur.

Use the meat keeper drawer for short-termstorage. Any meat to be kept longer than twodays should be frozen.

Frozen food storage

• Keep the freezer compartment at 0° F orlower.

,, A freezer operates most efficiently when it isat least 2/3full.

Packaging foods for freezing

, To minimize food dehydration and qualitydeterioration, use aluminum foil, freezerwrap, freezer bags or airtight containers.Force as much air out of the packages aspossible and seal them tightly. Trapped aircan cause food to dry out, change color, anddevelop an off-flavor (freezer burn).

• Wrap fresh meats and poultry with suitablefreezer wrap prior to freezing.

,, Do not refreeze meat that has completelythawed.

Loading the freezer

,, Avoid adding too much warm food to thefreezer at one time. This overloads the

freezer, slows the rate of freezing, and canraise the temperature of frozen foods.

Leave a space between packages, so coldair can circulate freely, allowing food to freezeas quickly as possible.

,, Avoid storing hard=to-freeze foods, such asice cream and orange juice, on the freezer

door shelves. These foods are best storedin the freezer interior where the temperaturevaries less.

Ideas for saving energyinstallation

• Locate the refrigerator in the coolest part ofthe room, out of direct sunlight, and awayfrom heating ducts or registers. Do notplace the refrigerator next to heat-producingappliances such as a range, oven, ordishwasher, tf this is not possible, a sectionof cabinetry or an added layer of insulationbetween the two appliances will help therefrigerator operate more efficiently.

Level the refrigerator so that the doors closetightly.

Temperature settingsRefer to the "Controls" section in this Use &

Care Guide for procedures on temperaturesettings.

Food storage

• Avoid overcrowding the refrigerator orblocking cold air vents. Doing so causesthe refrigerator to run longer and use moreenergy.

Cover foods and wipe containers dry beforeplacing them in the refrigerator. This cutsdown on moisture build-up inside the unit.

Organize the refrigerator to reduce dooropenings. Remove as many items as neededat one time and close the door as soon as

possible.
