UV vereer meer as 250 sportsterre
Die Kovsie-Alumni Trust van dieUV het meer as 250 van sy oud-studente wat nasionale klere in
verskeie sportkodes oor die jare verwerfhet, tydens ’n spoggeleentheid op dieHoofkampus in Bloemfontein vereer.
Dit was die eerste keer in die ge-skiedenis van die UV dat soveel sport-manne en -vroue wat aan die UV ge-studeer het, op een slag vir hul pres-tasies vereer is.
Tydens die dinee was 100 van die250 oudstudente teenwoordig om hulspesiale eerbewyse te ontvang. Dit sluitonder meer in Springbokrugbyspelerssoos die broers Eben en Joggie Jansen,Nelie Smit, Edrich Krantz, Theuns Stof-berg, Jannie du Plessis, Meyer Bosmanen Hendro Scholtz. Van die sportsterrein ander sportkodes wat ook teenwoor-dig was, is Hennie Pretorius vir atletiek;Thandi Malindi vir 3000m atletiek;Stephen Brink en Heinrich Brüssow virSewes-rugby; Frans Botma vir onder-waterhokkie; Stephen Phofi vir langaf-standatletiek, Hannette Bruwer enAnnarie Store vir netbal; Boy Soke vir at-letiek, Annette Bekker vir hokkie enCorrie van Zyl en Gerhardus Liebenbergvir krieket.
Die eerste sportman- en vrou wataan die UV aangewys is, naamlik JoggieJansen en Annette Bekker, het ook ’nspesiale vermelding gekry.

Hy vertel: “Elke sport aan dieUV het sy goue jare beleef en elke pre-stasie het ’n bydrae gelewer om die UVse noemenswaardige reputasie te bou:- 1970: Ons hokkiespan is onoor-
wonne in die SAU-toernooi- 1971: Dit was die jaar vir netbal! Ses
van die sewe spelers in die SAU-span was Kovsies.
- 1973-1978: Rugby het in hierdietydperk uitgeblink. Vir die eerste keerverower die Vrystaat die Curriebeker,en nie verniet nie. Die o/20-span van1974 was die beste wat die UV nogopgelewer het. Meeste van diespelers het later vir die Vrystaat endie Springbokke opgedraf. In 1976was 13 van die 16 spelers van dieCurriebeker-span Shimlas.

Saam met hierdie geleentheidhet die Kovsie-Alumni Trust sytiende bestaansjaar gevier. Die UVhet hulde gebring aan die personewat meer as ’n dekade gelede diekreatiwiteit en inisiatief aan die daggelê het om die Kovsie-Alumni Trusttot stand te bring. Prof. FrederickFourie, Rektor en Visekanselier vandie UV, het in die Kovsie Sportlegen-des-publikasie regter Faan Hancke,stigtersvoorsitter van die Kovsie-Alumni Trust, asook sy opvolgers,erken vir die besondere rol wat hulgespeel het.
Die toekennings is deur mnr.Harold Verster, President van dieVrystaat Rugby-unie oorhandig.
Die trust bied onder meer finan-siële hulp aan talle minderbevoor-regte en gestremde studente om hulstudies te voltooi. Die Trustfondsword ook aangewend om akademie-se, kulturele en sportbeurse aan ver-dienstelike voornemende Kovsie-stu-dente toe te ken. “Ons wil graag hêdat alle studente, wat ernstig is oorhulle akademiese vorming, die kanssal hê om hulle studies aan die UVvoort te sit. Die droom van tersiêreopleiding moet nooit prysgegee wordas gevolg van ’n gebrek aan finan-sies nie,” sê me. Frances Hoexter,Voorsitter Kovsie-Alumni Trust.

UFS hosts the biggest HIV/Aids event in its history

“The Chief Directorate: Comm-unity Service at the UFS andthe Free State Department of
Education hosted a HIV/Aids focusevent with the theme: Management ofHIV/Aids in the workplace.
According to Rev Kiepie Jaftha,Chief Director of Community Service,this event forms part of a wider role ofhis directorate to raise the level ofawareness about the impact of HIV/Aids within the university and the highereducation sector in South Africa. It willalso incorporate the flow of HIV/Aidsinformation and activities into the corebusiness of the UFS.
The aim was to get the executivemanagement, middle management,aspiring managers and those who areaffected by the decisions of the man-agement, on board in the university'sendeavour to manage and create HIV/Aids awareness in the workplace.
Community members were alsoinvited to this event as the universitystrives to involve them in HIV/Aids edu-cation and awareness. “We hope to re-lease the valve of denialism and stirexcitement amongst people, to encour-age them to get involved in creatingawareness within their workplaces,institutions and society,” said RevJaftha.
Prof. Jan du Toit, Director of theAfrica Centre for HIV/Aids Management
at the University of Stellenbosch,delivered the keynote address. Anotherhighlight of the evening was a mini-musical production, Lucky, the Hero,directed by Prof. Jimmie Earl Perry,well-known stage performer anddirector of Educational Theatre andcreative arts for the Africa Centre forHIV/Aids Management.
The 25 tables at the event weresold for R1 500 each. This money wasdonated to the Lebone Land Care
Centre. Students are sent to Lebone aspart of their community service learningmodules to enhance their practicalskills.
“I admire the holistic approach theLebone Land Care Centre usestowards caring for people who areinfected and affected by HIV/ Aids andthe way they make people realisethat they can still live a meaningful lifeand add dignity and value to society,”said Rev. Jaftha.

UV Regskliniek hou skynhofkompetisie Die Regskliniek van die Fakulteit
Regsgeleerdheid het na die Vista-kampus verhuis. Om dit te vier, het die
Regskliniek ’n skynhofkompetisieaangebied vir senior studente om aan
hulle die geleentheid te bied om hulpraktiese verhoorvaardighede te ont-
wikkel. Drie spanne van die UV het in diesemi-finale teen ’n span van die
Universiteit van Pretoria deelgeneem.Die kompetisie is deur een van die UV-

Prizes to the value of R100 000were recently awarded tostudents in the Faculty of Natural
and Agricultural Sciences during a prizewinners function of the National Innova-tion Competition.
“The competition is sponsored bythe Innovation Fund, which was esta-blished by the national Department ofScience and Technology and is man-aged by the National Research Foun-dation (NRF). The competition seeks todevelop innovation and entrepreneur-ship amongst students in higher edu-cation institutions,” said Prof. TeunsVerschoor, Vice-Rector of AcademicOperations at the UFS.
Most universities in South Africatake part in the competition. “The firstphase of the competition is per univer-sity where students can win prizemoney to the value of R100 000. Thethree winners then compete in the na-tional competition, where prize moneyto the value of R600 000 can be won,”said Prof. Verschoor.
Prof. Gerrit van Wyk, former dean ofthe UFS Faculty of Natural and Agri-cultural Sciences and consultant forTechnology Transfer Projects, annuallymanages this competition.
Eight teams from the Faculty of Na-tural and Agricultural Sciences compe-ted in the local competition. The teams
had to submit a business plan, whichwas judged by six external adjudicators.
The winning team from the Depart-ment of Microbial, Biochemical and FoodBiotechnology submitted their businessplan with the title: “Using bacteriophagesto combat specific bacterial infections inpoultry”. The team, consisting of KaseyKakoma from Zambia, LehlohonoloMathengtheng from South Africa, and Ji-Yun Lee from South Korea, were award-ed R50 000 in cash. All three studentsare Master’s degree students in Micro-
biology in the Veterinary BiotechnologyResearch group at the UFS. To proceedto the second phase of the competition,the business plans of the three finalistsfrom each qualifying higher educationinstitution will be submitted for the na-tional competition. The best three stu-dents from each participating institutionwill exhibit their innovations at the na-tional awards ceremony early in 2008.The prize money won at the nationalcompetition has to be used for the com-mercialisation of the project or thefounding of a company.

Sports weekend boosts participation in sport

Asports weekend was held onthe Qwaqwa Campus toencourage students to partici-
pate in sport and to promote massparticipation. The campus recentlyestablished a partnership with theMaluti Further Education and Train-ing (FET) College, in this regard.
To kick start this programme, afun filled two-day sport event wasorganised. “This event began a newchapter on the working relationshipsbetween the UFS and Maluti FETCollege,” said Mr Danile Zoko,Sport Officer on the campus.Several talents were showcased bystudents in chess, basketball, foot-ball, table tennis and volleyball.
Mr James Moleko, studentssupport management of the MalutiFET College, said: “We are veryhappy with the venture because itwill encourage mass participationon our campus. We are lookingforward to the working relationshipwith the university.
“It will enable us to nurture talentsand encourage sportsmanship withinthe two institutions.”
ABSA made donations to thevalue of R18 000 to this event, alsoto encourage sportsmanship.

The South African Groundwaterconference was held in Bloem-fontein with the theme: “An Africa
where groundwater is valued andsustainably managed by empoweredstakeholders”. This biannual event drewgroundwater practitioners, researchers,regulators and other interested partiesfrom across South Africa, Africa and asfar as Europe, Asia and North America.
The Minister of Water Affairs andForestry, Ms Lindiwe Hendricks,delivered the opening address. Shestated that such conferences are criticalin helping government and the public tounderstand how to better utilise ground-water as a resource. “These confe-rences also help answer questions withregard to sustainable utilisation andmanagement of groundwater in ourcountry and continent,” she said.
A wide variety of papers were deli-vered on groundwater regulation andgovernance, aquifer characterisation,surface-groundwater interaction andgroundwater pollution and quality. Theconference provided an opportunity forgeohydrologists, regulators, engineersand environmentalists to obtain infor-mation, interact with the major roleplayers in South Africa and understandthe latest trends in groundwater man-

The Department of CommunityHealth in the Faculty of HealthSciences held a function to thank
all their stakeholders for their contri-butions and the role they played throughout the year. They also used this
opportunity to launch a DVD, entitled:Community Service Learning. This DVDshowcases the community service workof respectively the School of Allied HealthProfessions, the School of Medicine andthe School of Nursing in the faculty.

The Programme in LanguagePractice at the UFS presented aTranslation Day Seminar with the
title: Subverting the west? Engaginglanguage practice as Africaninterpretation.
Prof. Jackie Naudé, ProgrammeDirector for the Programme in Lang-
uage Practice, gave a short historicaloverview of developments in researchand training in language practice of thepast decade. He argued in favour of asocio-constructivist approach to teach-ing and research in language practice.“Students need to be given the oppor-tunity to engage with the complexitiesof real life problems, specifically thecomplexities of the African context,” hesaid.
Dr Kobus Marais, Senior Lecturer inTranslation Studies, gave an overview ofthe state of the art of translation re-search. This meant that language prac-titioners are agents in communication,not mere conduits of meaning. Heargued that translators' agency impliedthat they have to make informed choices,the most important of which is whether toindigenise or foreignise when translating.
He developed wisdom as a notion intranslation, indicating that translatorsneed to be wise to interpret their contextand translate in such a way that(Western) ideology does not ride piggy-back on their translations into the Africantarget culture. Prof. Joan Connoly, Asso-ciate Professor in the Centre for HigherEducation Development at DurbanUniversity of Technology (DUT), took the
audience on a breathtaking journey onthe topic of oral knowledge. Her pre-sentation showed examples, both ofEuropean and African oral knowledgeand had a clear message for languagepractitioners.
What can Africans learn from theWestern mind? Her answer: “Africanscan learn how easy it is to loose one'soral knowledge base. Africans can lookat the West and see what the conse-quences are when a culture loses itsoralbased knowledge. Languagepractitioners have it in their power toconsider this possible loss and dosomething about it.”
Ms Lolie Makhubu, Head of theDepartment of Language and Translationat DUT, spoke about enticement in inter-preting to use loan words to impresseither the audience or peers or clients.Her argument boils down to the inter-preter's attitude towards African cultureand language. “If Western culture is re-garded as higher than African culture,interpreters will be tempted to boast theirknowledge of Western culture by meansof their choice of words. However, if inter-preters are “Proudly South African”, theyhave no need for showing off by usingloan words,” she said.
As a UFS Marketing initiative, businessleaders from Johannesburg visited theMain Campus. Tien jaar gelede was die Afrikaansebiblioteek wat in Mangaung virskoolkinders begin is drie keer
voorbladnuus in Volksblad en het dit wyetelevisiedekking geniet. Hierdie projekhet in samewerking met Volksblad14 000 boeke ingesamel. Die Bloemfon-teinse gemeenskap het op treffendewyse die hand uitgesteek na die Man-gaunggemeenskap. Met hierdie gesa-mentlike projek is daar bewys dat same-lewingsdiensleer nie net tot die diens-professies behoort nie, maar dat tale, inhierdie geval was dit Afrikaans, ooksamelewingsdiens kan lewer waarbystudente en buitevennote betrek word.

Prof. Dingie Janse vanRensburg, Director of theCentre for Health Systems
Research and Development, hasbeen promoted to Outstanding Pro-fessor. Not many academics at theUFS have this status.
Prof. Janse van Rensburg hasbeen working at the UFS for 37years and played a big role in esta-blishing a culture of scientific publi-cation among young and upcomingresearchers. He enjoys extensivenational and international recogni-tion as researcher and researchmanager. He delivered various na-tional and international papers andis involved in a variety of interna-tional research projects – some ofwhich were initiated by him.
In 1993 he established an entre-preneurial research and develop-ment centre, which he has sustain-ed for more than 13 years. Financial Mail. In this survey theMBA students’ opinion on variousaspects of schools of managementat South African universities werepolled.
The school obtained secondplace in terms of the quality of itscurriculum and its administrativesupport. The teaching of humanresource management and market-ing, achieved the top position in thedivision on subject standard. Leader-ship achieved the second position.

Pulane Mahloka, a final-yearB.Sc. (Quantity Surveying)student, has made academic
history by becoming the first blackstudent to be awarded a gold medalby the Association of South AfricanQuantity Surveyors (ASAQS).
She is the 14th UFS studentsince 1970 to receive this accolade,and is only the sixth female studentof the UFS to attain this honour.
According to the modest 23-year-old Ms Mahloka, her academicsuccess attests to the quality oftraining the university is providing.
“I did not in my wildest dreamsimagine that I could be selected asthe winner. I feel truly humbled andgrateful to be counted amongst theachievers in my field of study,” saidMs Mahloka.
Ms Mahloka hopes that she caninspire black students all over thecountry, particularly those frompreviously disadvantaged back-grounds.
Her advice to fellow students is:“There is little you can do aboutwhere you come from. Do not beashamed, but work hard to developyourself. Now that you have made itto university, it is your chance towork hard and make something outof your life.”
Ms Mahloka, who hails fromMaseru in Lesotho, was a staracademic performer since her firstyear in 2003, when she received anaward for the best first-yearstudent.
Students were also asked howmuch the schools of managementcontributed to the development ofcertain competencies such as deci-sion making, creative thinking, pro-blem solving, team work, leadership,communication and ethics.
The School of Management wasrated third in terms of businessconnections in the division on theexpectations of students about whatthe schools of management canoffer them.
Fifteen of the 16 registeredschools of management in SouthAfrica took part in the survey.

Dr Elias Malete, the reserved,considerate and respectablePrincipal of the Qwaqwa Cam-
pus of the UFS, is its first alumnus tohead the campus in the 25 years of itsexistence.
Dr Malete was appointed as JuniorLecturer in the Department of Sesothoat the then University of the North on 1January 1994, teaching syntax, morph-ology, novel and drama to undergrad-uates, and Sesotho syntax and OralLiterature at honours level.
“My interest in Sesotho developedwhen studying it at third year level,where we were taught Oral Literatureand the Historical Development ofSesotho Literature. This was furthernourished at honours level. It is theOral Literature course that changed myperception about Sesotho and AfricanCulture. I began to understand myselfwithin the African context and acceptedthe way I am because I realised thatthe belief and knowledge systems ofAfricans are also valuable.
“My main objective is to arouse inte-rest in Sesotho amongst the nativespeakers and contribute positively to-wards the development of Sesotho incollaboration with the UFS and otherstakeholders,” said Dr Malete.
When the Qwaqwa Campus wasincorporated into the UFS, the Facultyof the Humanities nominated Dr Maleteas Programme Co-ordinator ofHumanities on the Qwaqwa Campus,which he carried out for two and halfyears. In July 2005 he was appointed to
act as Academic Head. Dr Malete said:“When Prof. Peter Mbati resigned, Iwas appointed as the acting CampusPrincipal until 30 August 2007 when Iwas afforded a three year contract postas Campus Principal.”
As Campus Principal Dr Malete wasrelieved from lecturing undergraduatecourses. However, he still assists withmoderation of question papers for thosecourses. He is also the external exami-ner of respectively Sesotho third-year
students in the Department of Educa-tion at the National University of Leso-tho, of M.A. students in the Departmentof African Languages at the Universityof the North, and of Ph.D. students inthe Department of African Languages atthe University of Stellenbosch. “I amalso a research team member of theMotouleng Project within the Centre forAfrican Studies with Prof. Philip Nel.
“One highlight of my career was myappointment as chairperson of theSesotho National Language Body. Ialso managed to publish some chaptersin Sesotho grammar books for learners.It is a contribution that gives me greatpleasure,” said Dr Malete.
Dr Malete is a single parent of twodaughters Ntsieng (Grade 11) andNthabiseng (Grade 8) and a son Malete(Grade 4). “They are pillars of strengthfor me in times of tribulations and a joyto my heart when the sun shines,” hesays.
Dr Malete concluded: “I would liketo be remembered as the man whofought for his language and culture andwho brought visible changes to theQwaqwa Campus that people can beproud of.”

the Centre for Sustainable Agricultureand Rural Development, has recentlybeen appointed by the EuropeanUnion (EU) as one of four interna-tional non-EU rural developmentexperts. Dr Stroebel will be conduc-ting a comprehensive economic,social and development impact as-sessment of the EU’s rural develop-ment programme, LeaderPlus.
His responsibility includes a focuson France, Germany, Ireland and theUnited Kingdom. Dr Stroebel is theco-ordinator of the Jobs for GrowthTraining Programme with the Man-gaung University of the Free StateCommunity Partnership Programme(MUCPP), within the Accelerated andShared Growth Initiative (ASGISA).

He said the launch provided allstakeholders with a golden oppor-tunity to influence curriculum deve-lopment in schools so that it betterreflects the understanding and thedesire to learn more about Africa.He said this cannot happen withouta sound knowledge produced byAfricans, which can then be sharedwith the rest of humanity.

“It is no longer tenable that Afri-can scholars should take a backseat and merely consume, often un-critically, knowledge systems thatwere produced and sifted throughother minds. Similarly, our intel-lectual pursuits cannot take place inisolation. According to Prof. Phillip Nel,Director of the Africa Studies Pro-gramme at the UFS, the Centre forAfrica Studies will focus on theissues and challenges of Africa andmake the context of Africa a part ofthe UFS's academic activities in asustained and innovative way.
The centre will closely co-operate and liaise with prominentAfrican initiatives and structures likethe African Union, Pan-AfricanParliament, Southern African Deve-lopment Community (SADC), Eco-nomic Community of West AfricanStates (ECOWAS) and many others.

Community's (SADC) Promotion ofRegional Integration (Print) prog-ramme: “Delivery of a Regional Train-ing Programme in Livestock Market-ing and Trade” was presented by theDepartment of Agricultural Econom-ics. Die Unie van Internasionale Ar-gitekte (UIA) het die Verenig-de Nasies se Wêrelderfenis-
dag wat op die eerste Maandag inOktober plaasvind, as Wêreldargitek-tuurdag aangeneem. Volgens mnr.Jan Ras, dosent aan die Departe-ment Argitektuur aan die UV en lidvan die Vrystaatse Instituut van Argi-tekte, het die Suid-Afrikaanse Insti-tuut van Argitekte in samewerkingmet die onderskeie streeksinstitutevanjaar besluit om op Wêreldargi-tektuurdag die publiek se aandag opgoeie argitektuur te vestig. Vir hierdiedoel is daar landswyd rooi kolle opgeboue wat die afgelope drie toeken-ningsperiodes toekennings ontvanghet, aangebring.
Mnr. Ras sê: “In die Vrystaat isnege rooi kolle versprei; een in Har-rismith, twee in Sasolburg en vyf inBloemfontein. Twee van die vyf kollehet ’n plek gevind op onderskeidelikdie Hoofgebou en die Thakaneng-brug op die UV-kampus.”
The Department of Political Sci-ence had the honour of hostingthe biennial Colloquium of the
South African Association of PoliticalStudies (SAAPS). Prof. ConstanzeBauer, Associate Professor in the De-partment of Political Sciences, was theco-ordinator of the colloquium.
Forty seven papers were presentedat the colloquium on topics such ascritical transformation, discourses andethics, globalisation, governance andpolitical economy and human security,social justice and conflict transformation.
The most outstanding articles will bepublished in an accredited journal earlyin 2008.
A unique feature of this colloquiumwas the free showing of a number ofdocumentaries on human rights whichwas open to all colleagues from theuniversity and members of the localcommunity.

Aproject of the Centre for PlantHealth Management (CePHMa)has won a 2007 Technology
Award for the groundbreaking researchwork undertaken on kenaf, a South Afri-can commercial fibre crop used,amongst others, in the automotiveindustry. The research was initiated atthe UFS six years ago in collaboration
with the British company SustainableProjects Development Group and ispresently continued with the South Afri-can company Sustainable Fibre Solu-tions.
The award was presented by theNational Department of Trade andIndustry at the Nelson Mandela Metro-politan University in Port Elizabeth.
Dr Hlalele serves on FET Council
Dr Dipane Hlalele, from theSchool of Education on theQwaqwa Campus, was ap-
pointed by the MEC for Education toserve as a College Council memberof the Maluti Further Education andTraining College. His appointment isvalid to 1 August 2012.

Tutors help students to improve performance
The Department of Student Deve-lopment and Success held a NewAcademic Tutorial Programme
(NATP) Awards evening to thank the 44students academic tutors on the MainCampus for their work during the year.The tutors were also evaluated basedon feedback from the students that theytutored during the year.
Marius Shardelow, student tutor inthe Centre for Accounting in the Facultyof Economic and Management Scien-ces, with an evaluation score of 95.5%,was named as the best overall tutor.
The Faculties of Health Sciences,Economic and Management Sciences,
Natural and Agricultural Sciences andthe Humanities participated in theNATP programme.
According to Dr Ezekiel Moraka,Vice-Rector: Student Affairs, it is thefirst time in the history of the UFS thatsuch a function is held to acknowledgethe student tutors for their hard work.With a slide show Dr FrancoisStrydom, Director: Student Develop-ment and Success, indicated to thestudents the difference that they madein students academic lives. “In aperiod of five classes, students’ atten-dance and their performanceimproved,” he said.

Staff to get at least7,25% salary increase
The UFS management and tradeunions have agreed on an in-crease of 9,32% in the service
benefits of staff for 2008. This includesa general minimum salary increase of7,25%.
A once-off non-pensionable bonus ofR3 000 will be paid in December 2007.The bonus will be paid in recognition ofthe role played by staff to promote theUFS as a university of excellence andas confirmation of the role and effec-tiveness of the remuneration model.
The agreement was signed by re-presentatives of the UFS managementand UVPERSU and NEHAWU.
“As the state subsidy level is unfor-tunately not yet known, remunerationcould vary several percentage pointsbetween a window of 7,25 and 8,39%,”said Prof. Frederick Fourie, Rector andVice-Chancellor.
Should the government subsidy besuch that the incease falls outside thewindow of 8,39%, the parties will nego-tiate again.
The bonus will be paid to staff mem-bers who were employed by the UFSon UFS conditions of service on 14November 2007 and who assumed du-ties before 1 October 2007.
The agreement provides for thephasing in of fringe benefits of contractappointments for 2008. This includesthe implementation of a pension/provi-dent fund, housing allowance and themedical fund allowance as from 1 Jan-uary 2008 to staff who are appointed ona contract basis.
Agreement was also reached that1,0% will be allocated for structural ad-justments to partially address the back-log in respect of remuneration pack-ages of other higher education institu-tions. These adjustments will be madeafter further investigations during 2008.
The implementation date for the sa-lary adjustments is 1 January 2008, butcould possibly be implemented only ata later stage due to logistical reasons.The adjustment will be calculated onthe remuneration package.
The agreement also applies to allstaff members of the Vista and QwaqwaCampuses whose conditions of employ-ment have already been aligned withthose of the Main Campus.

The theme of the conference was: “The African Land-scape”. RIEP presents mathstraining for students
The Research Institute forEducation Planning (RIEP)trained 19 Foundation Phase
students from the School of Educa-tion in the Family Math programme.Family Math is a programme inwhich teachers, children (preschoolup to Grade 9) and their parents areexposed to the basic principles ofmathematics.
The aim of the training is todevelop literacy levels in mathe-matics by using fun activities, con-crete resources and available andless expensive material found inand around the house. Over andabove the contact sessions, eachstudent had to arrange two commu-nity workshops to qualify as a Fami-ly Math facilitator. The training wasmade possible by a sponsorshipfrom Old Mutual.

Mexican Ambassador visits the UFS
The Mexican Ambassador, Am-bassador Luis Cabrera andDeputy Head of the Mexican
Embassy in South Africa, ChancellorMiguel Malvafòn recently visited theFaculty of Natural and AgriculturalSciences.
Possibilities for collaborationbetween the faculty and similarfaculties at universities in Mexicowere some of the topics that werediscussed. The Ambassador alsomet with cactus pear researchers atthe UFS and developments concern-ing the memorandum of under-standing which was signed last yearbetween the Centre for Plant HealthManagement (CePHMa) and theUniversity of Chapingo in Mexico,were also discussed.

Prof. Frans Swanepoel, Direc-tor of Research Develop-ment, has been appointed as
a Visiting Fellow at the CornellInternational Institute for Food, Agri-culture and Development (CIIFAD)at Cornell University in the UnitedStates of America. He was invited tospend the second semester of 2008at Cornell, where he will co-teach aPh.D. course on International Agri-cultural Development, focusing onagriculture in Africa. In addition, hisresearch programme will includethe revision of agricultural educationcurricula for the development andcommercialisation of smallholderfamily farms in Africa. In this regard,he will liaise with the newly estab-lished Centre for Africa Studies atthe UFS.
Prof. Swanepoel is also anExtraordinary Professor at the Cen-tre for Sustainable Agriculture at theUFS, and Adjunct-Professor in De-velopment Studies at the Universityof Fort Hare. Earlier this year, hewas commissioned by the nationalMinistry of Agriculture to prepare acabinet memorandum on the role ofrural women in agriculture in prepa-ration for the Fourth World Confe-rence on Rural Women, held inDurban during April 2007.
