THE R30-million Makgatho LewanikaMandela Primary School in Mvezo was of-ficially opened by President Jacob Zumalast week.

With him at the event were Basic Edu-cation Minister Angie Mosekga, EasternCape Premier Pumullo Masualle, Educa-tion MEC Mandla Makupula and formerpresident Nelson Mandela’s grandson,Mandla Mandela.

Among the dignitaries at the officialopening was Miss World Rolene Strauss.

Addressing a fully packed marquee atthe school, Zuma said: “The ground onwhich we stand today was once walked onby a great statesman and stalwart, uTataPresident Nelson Mandela.

“Today, we return to Mvezo to honourthis giant whose umbilical cord is burieddeep in the bowels of this village. Morethan anything, Madiba loved childrenand valued education.”

He said the appropriately namedschool was now officially open to ensurethat the children of Mvezo never again be-came hewers of wood and drawers of wa-ter.

He expressed his gratitude to the royalfamily of Mvezo Komkhulu for puttingpeople first and ensuring that the peopleof the area benefited from the freedomMandela had fought for.

“We expect the next generation of Mve-zo children to take up their rightful placesin commerce, academia, leadership andthe advancement of human rights anddignity,” he said.

Maqadi Mrhebelele, a longstandingresident of Mvezo, said it was now up tothe children of the area to grab this rareopportunity with both hands.

“We have a state-of-the-art facility andnow it depends on our children to committhemselves to education as the govern-ment is trying to improve education evenin remote areas like Mvezo,” she said.

The school is named after Nelson Man-dela’s eldest son, Makgatho LewanikaMandela, the father of present Mvezochief Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandla Mandela.

Speaking at the opening, Mandla Man-dela said the Mandela family was thank-ful that his late father was being hon-oured by having the school named afterhim.

The names of the school are an embodi-ment of three ANC leaders: Sefako Mak-gatho, the second ANC president, KingLubosi Lewanika of Barotseland in Zam-bia who was in Mangaung in 1912 as oneof the honorary presidents of the ANC,and Nelson Mandela, the 10th presidentof the ANC and the first president of thedemocratic South Africa. Mandela’s sonwas named after Sefako Makgatho.

The school is a merger of two primaryschools, Inkwenkwezi and Mvezo JuniorSecondary.

The merger was the result of the lownumbers of registered pupils, and waspart of the government’s rationalisationprogramme.

Since the merger, the school has en-rolled 403 pupils and has a new computercentre, library, science lab, new adminis-tration block and nutrition kitchen.

THE Walter Sisulu University’s arts depart-ment has started planting seeds to cultivateand grow research within its walls with theaspiration of one day seeing it blossom intomore than just a culture - but the supremeethos.

The ongoing research paper “Swazi OralLiterature, Ecoculture and EnvironmentalApocalypse” delivered by the University ofSwaziland’s Dr Enongene Sone on August 4served to launch the department’s SeminarsSeries at the Mthatha Campus.

The paper examines oral literature as theepicentre of Swazis’ indigenous conceptuali-sation of their social existence and focuses onhow this oral literature as a system of knowl-edge and cultural practice is engaged by Swa-zis with regard to environmental sustainabil-ity.

Sone argues that the indigenous environ-mental expertise among the Swazi people, en-

capsulated in their oral literature, can serveas a critical resource base for the process ofdeveloping a healthy environment.

Furthermore, the paper contends that eco-criticism, which is essentially aWestern con-cept, can benefit by drawing inspiration fromthe indigenous knowledge contained in Swaziculture and expressed in their oral literature.

Series coordinator andEnglish studies sen-ior lecturer Dr Thabisani Ndlovu said: “Ouraim is to develop and encourage a true aca-demic spirit of engaging and sharing ideas. This should be the function of any vibrantarts department - to generate meaningful de-bate on issues that affect society at large.”

It was through such engagement, he point-ed out, that society could review, recommendand implement strategies with the commonpurpose of contributing towards creating arobust, all-inclusive and humane society.

Ndlovu said the seminars were also gearedtowards creating an appropriate space andplatform to encourage WSU staff and post-graduate students to share and assist each

other in collaborative efforts towrite andpub-lish more research papers.

The series is set to run until October 13 andwill constitute seven seminars with a pletho-ra of broad-based themes looking at socio-po-litical subthemes.

TWO Eastern Cape women scooped top na-tional farming honours during the annual Na-tional Female Entrepreneur of the Yearawards in Durban last Thursday (August 27).

The OR Tambo District’s NabelemntwiniSawmill Cooperative took home the Minis-ter’s Special Award for Female EntrepreneurLiving with Disabilities category, while theSarah Baartman-based Sundays River Farm-ing Trust won in the Top Entrepreneur ExportMarkets category.

“To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expectingthis award,” said Elizabeth Cox, who won theMinister’s Special Award.

“I am very happy to have been given thisaward by the minister. I will invest this prizemoney back into my business so that we cando more.”

Cox urged other women in agriculture andpeople with disabilities never to give up andto do their best in whatever they did.

She won R100 000 in prize money and a tab-let computer loaded with Agri suit online soft-ware.

“We are happy that we won in this categoryand we attribute our success to the support wecontinue to receive from the government andthe team work of all members of the trust onthe farm,” said Buyiswa Dyenga of SundaysRiver Farming Trust which won the Top En-trepreneur Export Markets category.

She said women could succeed when theymade a commitment to their work.

Ndyengwa will use the money to build acreche for all the children of their workers sothat they can be taken care of while their par-ents are on duty.

The cooperative, which employs 17 people, three of whom are women, gets its timber sup-ply from various government-owned forests, such as the Saponampolo, Ncengane and Etwaforests.

The orange- and lemon-producing SundaysRiver Farming Trust, which won the top pro-vincial award, produces 2 052 tons of orangesand 1 032 tons of lemons a year for both theexport and local markets.

The trust was started in 2007 by 20 beneficia-ries (seven women, four men and nine youngwomen).

They started out as farmworkers but nowown the farm after the Rural Developmentand Land Reform Department gave it to themfor citrus production.

Rural Development and Agrarian ReformMEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane congratulated thewinners, saying they were the epitome of fe-male success in the male-dominated field ofagriculture.

“On behalf of the provincial government, Icongratulate the two women and their busi-nesses for winning in the categories of the na-tional Female Entrepreneur of the Yearawards.”

“They defeated serious challenges and oddsto be where they are with their businesses.Their success shows that government sup-port for previously disadvantaged individu-als within this sector is yielding positive re-sults.”

The national awards follow provincialchapters held in each province where femalefarmers compete for provincial prizes, withthe winner being sent to the national contestto vie for the coveted female entrepreneur ofthe year silverware.

In the national awards, the Eastern Capewas represented by Xoliswa Binda in the Fe-male Farm Worker of the Year category, Si-yalakha Backyard Garden in the SubsistenceProducer category, Laphum’ikhwezi Cooper-ative in the Entrepreneur Small Holder cate-gory, Nozamo Cleaning Supplies in the Entre-preneur Processing category, Nabelemn-twini Sawmills in the EntrepreneurCommercial category and the Sundays RiverFarming Trust contesting in the Top Entre-preneur Export Markets category.

Qoboshiyane added that the success of thepair in the national awards was a reward fortheir hard work in the previous season de-spite sectoral and climatic conditions.

“Some of the challenges faced by these fe-male farmers included a national industry-wide black spot-induced citrus ban by the Eu-ropean Union and challenges peculiar to theforestry sector.
