CCC - simple using the Navigator

The VCC Navigator enables separation of the tasks. The administrative tasks are dealt with at the PC by the

respective specialists. Therefore, the driver can concentrate absolutely on the compaction of the material to beinstalled.

    Easy to assembe

Plug and play - the Navigator package is supplied ready to connect for all vibratory rollers:

    - The sensors are assembled on the compactor and chassis.

    - The quick-release adapter supports the attachment of the display in the cabin.

    - The modem and GNSS receiver are affixed to the driver’s cabin with magnetic bases.

    - The connection node NAB connects all the parts of the Navigator.

    Easy to set up

The compaction project is prepared in the site office with the CompactDoc PC software.

The construction drawing is effortlessly imported with the axis data. It simplifies the

orientation on the construction site for the roller driver.

All specifications for compaction measurement can be communicated by the site office

to the roller via a modem or USB stick using wireless transmission. Input on the display

in the machine is also possible.

    Easy to operate

Measurement starts automatically after switching the vibration on.

The display in the driver’s cabin shows all the important information such as

compression status and increase, number of passes, position of the roller or the

    temperature.

The coloured presentation of the measurement values according to the traffic lights

principle visualises on the card when the compaction target is reached. This enables

the roller driver to react fast if required.

    Easy to save

The VCC Navigator saves all measurement data automatically. The VDS modem

transfers them encoded via mobile communications directly to a server. There the data

is ready for call-up with the CompactDoc PC software.

It is also possible to exchange the data between the Navigator and a PC using a USB stick.

    Easy to evaluate

To analyse and document the compaction the PC software CompactDoc is used.

Via a safe Internet connection the program accesses the current measurement values for the roller.

In addition, CompactDoc enables comprehensive evaluation of the construction project at all times,e. g. as a measurement protocol in accordance with CCC Guidelines. Export functions support further

    processing using other programs.

    Proof of load-bearing capacity

More and more often, the building contractors require

proof of load-bearing capacity of the substructure.

Traditional measurement methods such as statistical

test plans or sample compaction work and proof are

very time-intense. Several samples and detailed

    documentation are necessary. These techniques

require trained experts and only provide selective

    results.

The VCC Navigator earthwork uses the results from

selective samples and applies these comprehensively

to the entire construction site. A partial area sufficesfor calibration, enabling the measurement of the entire

construction field according to the CCC rules if the

    material characteristics are the same.

The work-integrated measurement method can be

applied faster and also records data away from

    selective random sampling.

    Increasing efficiency

The VCC Navigator supports the building contractor

and the installation team in their actual task:

completion of the construction site. For this purpose,

the measurement system is optimised to enable the

    easiest of usability.

The administrative tasks are dealt with at the

PC and transferred wireless to the roller.

The VCC Navigator carries out the transferred

tasks independently without interaction with the

roller driver. The recording of measurementvalues starts automatically after switching the

    vibrator on.

Additionally, the touch screen enables the

intuitive implementation of all tasks incurred

on the construction site for CCC, for example

    calibration of the measurement.

    The roller driver’s assistant

The roller driver is informed of the subsoil status at

all times. The display shows the compaction values,

compaction increase or the number of dynamic passes.

Thus, weaknesses can be recognised immediately.

The reasons for inadequate compaction can include

too high or too low water content in the ground, a poor

grain structure or several other reasons.

The driver can initiate correction in good time withground improvement measures.

Equally, the Navigator warns against over-compaction.

The roller driver can use this, for example, to avoid

the loosening of the ground via grain destruction and

    act accordingly.

The assistant in the construction office

With its software, the VCC Navigator supports the

planning and documentation of the compaction project:

    Setting up the construction site

Import of the geo-referenced construction drawing

      Calibration of the measurement data

      Evaluation of the compaction data

    etc.

The Navigator assistance enables faster and more

reliable preparation of all compaction data because the

VCC Navigator is based on the latest methods of theCCC information sheet from the Forschungsgesellschaft

für Straßen- und Verkehrswesen (FGSV) [Road and

    Transportation Research Association].

The printout for documentation of the construction

measure to the client contains all relevant information

for CCC. The print assistant enables filtering it for the

client. The template editor serves to adapt the printout

to the building contractor’s corporate design.

    Task

As opposed to earthwork, no official installation

compaction control regulations exist for asphalt

installation. Accordingly, the client does not prescribe

the use of measurement technology but this is

necessary to proof the compaction quality.

Asphalt paving is a time-critical process. In order to

achieve the specified compaction, a calculated number

of crossings within a certain temperature range of the

    mix is required.

To assess the load-bearing capacity of the building,in asphalt compaction, the number of dynamic passes

is considered first, and not the rigidity value, which also

increases when the asphalt cools down.

For this reason, it is crucial to comply with the agreed

rolling scheme throughout. This is already a tough

challenge for smaller construction sites because, after

a few passes, the roller driver can no longer recognise

how frequently he has dynamically compacted certain

    points.

    The VCC Navigator asphalt

The VCC Navigator asphalt works as in earthwork

without the help of the roller driver.

The gapless takeover of a rolling scheme from a

team colleague who has to leave his workplace tofill the water supply is virtually impossible without an

    assistance system.

The VCC Navigator asphalt helps the installation team

to fulfil the networked roller scheme over the course

of the long installation day with all of its incidents. The

benefit for the building contractor is the minimisation

of expensive reworking of construction projects.

Comparison: asphalt installation with and without

    the VCC Navigator

The tests were made with a team known to be

“experienced”. First, the asphalt was installed

conventionally. The display was covered. Then, the

Navigator was applied as an assistance system.

Already the first cycle with the Navigator demonstrated

    considerably better evenness during paving.

The PC evaluation shows the results from a meter for

    dynamic passes:

The roller driver worked via the display without help

in the travel direction south to north. The image shows

a clearly right-biased roller scheme and gaps on theleft-hand side in travel direction.

The driver rolled with an open display in the north to

south travel direction. The covering of dynamic passes

    is considerably more even.

Solution: asphalt installation using leading edge

    measurement technology

In particular for larger construction sites, VCC

measurement technology provides an overview of

all construction phases as several rollers are equipped

with the Navigator system and networked via mobile

communications. This enables all team members to

record the overall paving progress at a glance.

The roller drivers distinguish the different rollers

on the display via their colour allocation: their own

roller is displayed black, other rollers are shown in

grey. All drivers are therefore able to assume the taskof another roller with their own roller and to continue

    compaction precisely where their predecessor

    stopped.

    Increasing know-how

The paving process can be followed precisely

at the PC. This enables the use of the data gained

for training purposes: the PC software CompactDoc

can be used to show the entire team’s installation

process in selected partial areas in fast motion.

    Quality proof of the installation

    Comprehensive compaction control in asphalt

installation doesn’t yet enjoy tradition. There are no

sets of rules as for earthwork. Nonetheless, the

    comprehensive documentation for asphalt compaction

is increasingly becoming valid as quality proof.

Printout of the compaction data is derived from the

    CCC information sheet for earthwork.

It fully documents the quality of the asphalt

    compaction.

    Display properties

The display with a 10-inch screendiagonal is encased in robust

    aluminium housing and planned

    for the rough environmental

    conditions of a construction site.

The vertical alignment of the display

    supports the situation on the

    construction site: mostly, the card

shows the working area in front of

    and behind the roller driver.

The touch screen is protectedwith scratchproof mineral glass,

    supporting intuitive operation.

    Large buttons enable ergonomic

    working.

Also when visibility is poor because

of too much or too little light, the

display remains easy to read off

due to its non-reflecting glass and

    backlighting.

Display assembly For easy installation in the driver’s

    roller cabin, a quick-release adapter

for the display, which also makes the

    contact, is available.
