In today¶s tutorial, you¶ll learn how to create an abstract colorful background with bokeh effectusing Photoshop¶s drawing tools, blending modes, and lighting techniques. Layered PSD fileincluded. Let¶s get started!

Create a new document ( Ctrl+N ) in Adobe Photoshop with the size 1920px by 1200px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch . Use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill with#010E1F color the new background layer .



To create a fiber background we¶ll download Spiderman Pattern from brusheezy.com . Copy the

pattern file and paste it into, C:/Adobe/Photoshop/Presets/Patterns .Create a new layer and fill it with black color , click to Add a layer style icon from bottom partof the Layers panel and select Pattern Overlay . Go to Pattern Picker , and additionalSpiderman Pattern can be added by loading them from the Picker¶s submenu.



We¶ve got the next effect:



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andchoose a Soft Round brush of black color from Brush Tool (B) ( set the Opacity to 10% inOptions bar )

Use Soft Round brush to paint in the mask to hide a little the document¶s edges:



Create a new layer and select again the Soft Round brush

Use the Soft Round brush to paint the central part of the document with the #003173 color



On the next new layer we¶ll apply again Soft Round brush to paint more the same part of the

picture with the next color - #0F6FBC

Next pass on Adobe Illustrator program and choose here the Ellipse Tool (L) to draw twoellipses of black color.



Using the D irect Selection Tool (A) , select both ellipses and apply here the next option: Object>Blend>Blend Options

We¶ve got the next result:



Select the ellipses and press CTRL+C(Copy) . Pass on Adobe Photoshop program after that and

press CTRL+V (Paste As - Pixels ).

Select for this layer CTRL+I (Inverse)



Set the Blending mode to Soft Light for this layer and click Add a layer style icon from bottom

part of the Layers panel to select D rop Shadow :



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andchoose the Soft Round brush ( Opacity 20% ) of black color

Use Soft Round brush to paint in the mask to hide the ellipses edges.



Create a new layer and select the Airbrush Soft Round brush of white color

Use Airbrush Soft Round brush to draw several small circles by changing the Opacity ,Hardness value and the brush¶s size



Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel to select Outer Glow



Add Inner Glow



Create the next new layer and select the Soft Round brush

Draw a spot of the color #FF00FF (set the Opacity to 10% in Options bar )



Use the same Soft Round brush for a new layer to paint the shown part below with the color #4AC1E4

Create a new layer and select the Airbrush Soft Round brush and white color (Opacity 30% )



Use the Airbrush Soft Round brush to represent a spot on the central part of the canvas.

Next choose the Pen Tool (P) , set the drawing mode on Shape Layers in Options bar and drawmany shapes as shown.



Set Fill to 0% for this layer and click Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layerspanel to select Gradient Overlay :



Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.



We¶ve got the next gradient on the shape:



Draw another shape

Set Fill to 0% and go to Layer Style >Gradient Overlay



Open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the GradientEditor dialog box.



Draw another shape:

Set Fill to 0% and click Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel to selectGradient Overlay :



Represent another shape using Pen Tool (P)

Set Fill to 0% and go to Layer Style>Gradient Overlay



Open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown.



Draw another shape:

Set Fill to 0% and click Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel to select Gradient Overlay :



We¶ve got the next gradient on the shape:



Represent another shape:

Set Fill to 0% in Layers panel , add Layer Style>Gradient Overlay

In this tutorial, I¶ll show you how to create an abstract composition in Photoshop using a varietyof shapes, layer styles, patterns, and photo manipulation techniques. Layered PSD file included.

Create a new document ( Ctrl+N ) in Adobe Photoshop with the size 1920px by 1200px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch . Use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill with#80494C color the new background layer .



Find a stock photo with a model represented on it, I used this photo from deviantart . I would liketo thank the author of this photo:



Remove the background using your favorite tools like Pen Tool (P) , Magic Wand Tool (W) ,Magnetic Lasso (L) or even a simple Filter>Extract and insert it on a new layer in our maindocument.



Pass on the Adobe Illustrator program and select the Pen Tool (P) to represent two lines of black color .



Choose the D irect Selection Tool (A) to select both lines, applying also Object>Blend>BlendOptions

We¶ve got the next composition:



Select the lines and press CTRL+C to copy. In Adobe Photoshop press CTRL+V (Paste As:Smart Object ).



Press CTRL+I to Invert .



Click on the layer with the lines on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask iconand choose the Soft Round brush ( Opacity 20% ).



Set Foreground color to black and using Soft Round brush paint in the mask to change opacityof the lines edges.



Next step we¶ll download a set of brushes for in Adobe Photoshop, named:Smoke_Brushes_Set_1_by_Falln_Stock , MVbrush0809 and manga-blood . Create a new layer and select the next brushes from Smoke_Brushes_Set_1_by_Falln_Stock set. The brushes¶ color is white .



Add the next smoke brush to our layer. Place this layer under the layer containing the girl.

Choose after that the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to incline the brushes¶ layer.



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andselect the Soft Round brush of black color (Opacity 20% )



Use Soft Round brush to paint smoothly in the mask to change the opacity of the smoke layer.



Create the next new layer and choose for it the earlier mentioned brush to add the next smoke.Its color in this case is white . Place the layer under the girl¶s layer. Incline a little the brush¶slayer, applying Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command, stretching it also the same waydemonstrated below.



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andchoose the Soft Round brush of black color (Opacity 20% )



Use Soft Round brush to paint smoothly in the mask to change the opacity of the smoke layer onthe girl¶s right side.



Next create a new layer and select for it the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill the layer in black .The layer will be situated lower than the girl¶s layer.



Select for this layer Filter>Render>Clouds (choosing for Foreground color the white color ).

Use the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to scale vertical the clouds¶ layer.



Set Fill to 34% for this layer and change the Blending mode to Luminosity .

Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andselect the Soft Round brush of black color (Opacity 20% )



Use the Soft Round brush to paint smoothly in the mask to hide the top part on the layer.

Create a new layer and select the Soft Round brush of black color .



Use this brush to represent a kind of shadow. Place the shadow¶s layer under the girl¶s one.

Click on the same layer on the lowest part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andtake the Soft Mechanical brush of black color with the Opacity of 20% .



Use this brush to paint smoothly in the mask to change the opacity of the shadow




Create a new layer and select this time the Sampled Brush #1 #4 from MVbrush0809 set. Thecolor for the brushes should be white .



Make some brushstroke using this brush as shown. Place the layer also lower than the girl¶slayer.



Next use the Rectangle Tool (U) to represent several rectangle of the #BA8386 color.



Next we¶ll combine in a group all the rectangles¶ layers (press CTRL button to select thecorresponding layers and hold on the left mouse¶s button when dragging them down on Create anew group icon from bottom part of the Layers panel ). Put the group into one single layer.Select the new group and press CTRL+E to Merge D own . Using the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command, incline the layer the same way demonstrated next picture. The new layer containingthe rectangles will be situated under the girl¶s layer.



Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) , try to represent the next selection on the rectangles¶layer.



Right click on the selection and select Select Inverse



« and press D ELETE button.



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andselect the Soft Round brush of black color (Opacity 20% ).



Use this brush to paint in the mask to change the opacity of the rectangles.



Next we¶ll create a new file with the size 6px by 6px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72pixels/inch , use the Pencil Tool (B) to draw a hard-edged line with Hard Round brush ( MasterD iameter - 1px ).

Choose Edit > D efine Pattern . Enter a name for the pattern in the Pattern Name dialog box.Use the Rectangle Tool (U) to create the next demonstrated rectangle.



Set Fill to 0% for this layer and click Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layerspanel to select Pattern Overlay . Go to Pattern Picker , and recent created pattern can be added

by loading them from the Picker ¶s sub-menu.



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andtake the Soft Round brush of black color and Opacity of 20%

Use this brush to paint in the mask to hide the texture¶s edges.



Using the Line Tool (U) (Weight - 1px ), represent three parallel lines, placing their layers under the girl¶s one.



Set Fill to 43% for each layer containing the line.



Today we¶ve got a really nice and simple tutorial demonstrating how to create hyperspace photomanipulation using Photoshop shapes, brushes, clouds filter and Blending modes. Layered PSDfile included.

Create a new document ( Ctrl+N ) in Adobe Photoshop with the size 800px by 1024px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch . Use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill with black color the new background layer .



Find a stock photo with a model represented on it, I used this photo from deviantart . I would liketo thank the author of this photo. Remove the background using your favorite tools like Pen Tool(P) , Magic Wand Tool (W) , Magnetic Lasso (L) or even a simple Filter>Extract and insert iton a new layer in our main document. The girl¶s sizes may be changed with Free Transform(Ctrl+T) command.



Create a new layer and select the Soft Round brush.



Use this brush to paint the background behind the girl¶s legs with this color - #25709F .



Use now the Pen Tool (P) to represent a shape which must be placed lower than the girl¶s layer.Set the drawing mode on Shape Layers in Options bar and draw the next shape as shown. Fill= 0% for this layer.



Next we have to represent a new layer again and use here also the Soft Round brush to paint theedges of the shape.



The brush¶s color is shown on the picture:



Let¶s create a clipping mask to make the content of the layer containing the brushes only visiblewithin the content of the layer containing the shape. Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (MacOS) and click between layer with brushes and the layer with shape (on the Layers panel ).




Now we have to make a copy of the layer containing the shape (change the Fill value on thecopy on 100% ). Use after that the D irect Selection Tool (A) to make smaller the copy¶s layer bymoving the anchor points of the shape. Create then a new layer above the copy¶s layer of theshape and choose the same Soft Round brush to paint the shape¶s edges.



Press Alt button and click between the brush¶s layers and the shape¶s copy layer (on the Layerspanel ) to create a clipping mask .




Press D to return the Foreground and Background color to default black and white .

Now we have to create a new layer again and choose on it Filter>Render>Clouds . Place thelayer under the girl¶s layer.



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andselect the Soft Round brush of black color (Opacity 15%)



Use this brush to paint in the mask to hide the clouds background around the girl.



Click Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel to add Color Overlay for themade layer:



Set the Opacity to 80% for this layer.



Click Create new fill or adjustment layer from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Curves to adjust the curve shape as shown to make a little color corrections.



Place the layer under the girl¶s one.



Choose now the Rectangle Tool (U) to represent a rectangle. Place the layer under the girl¶s one.



Click on the same layer on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask icon andselect the Soft Round brush of black color (Opacity 10%)



Use this brush to paint in the mask to hide the rectangle edges.



Make two copies of the layer containing the rectangle and place the copies the same waydemonstrated next picture. Change the Gradient Overlay settings for the copy¶s layer on the leftside.



Now we have to select the Pen Tool (P) to represent a shape of black color and place the layer under the layer containing the girl ( drawing mode is set on Shape layers in Options bar ).



Click Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel to select D rop Shadow :



Create a new layer and select the Soft Round brush of the color #FF00E3 (Opacity 20%) .

Use this brush to paint the edge of the black shape:



Press Alt button and click between the layers on the Layers panel to create a clipping mask .




Create a new layer and select the Soft Mechanical brush of black color .

Use this brush to paint the other side of the black shape.



Next we must choose the Rectangle Tool (U) to draw a rectangle which may be inclined withFree Transform (Ctrl+T) command. Place the layer also lower than the girl¶s layer.
