Reactions 1455 - 8 Jun 2013 S Verapamil Pulmonary oedema: case report A 59-year-old woman developed pulmonary oedema during treatment with verapamil. The woman, who had a long history of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, was admitted with dyspnoea and severe fatigue. She was administered verapamil 50mg twice daily [route not stated]. On the third day of admission, she reported worsening shortness of breath and she developed tachypnoea. Her BP was 90/20mm Hg, and her arterial oxygen saturation was 62%. She received treatment including intubation, ventilation and IV hydration. Verapamil was withdrawn and was replaced by metoprolol succinate. Her condition improved and she was discharged. Author comment: "Here we describe a hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) patient who developed pulmonary edema upon intake of Verapamil and was treated by an uncommon strategy: intravenous fluid."
