Something from

Becky

April is Alcohol Awareness Month.

You can become more sensitive to alcohol as you get older. The effects of

alcohol are more pronounced in the elderly due to a reduction of lean

body mass, less water content of the body, loss of brain neurons and reduced

liver enzyme efficiency. Heavy drinking can make some health problems worse.

Some of these problems include: Stroke, high blood pressure, memory loss,

mood disorders. Remember that medicines and alcohol don’t mix! Taking

aspirin and drinking alcohol can raise the chance of bleeding in your stomach.

You can get very sleepy if you drink alcohol and take cold and allergy medicines.

Most cough syrups have a high amount of alcohol in them. Sleeping pills, pain

pills, or anxiety or depression medicine can be dangerous. Painkillers that have

the word “acetaminophen” on the label and taken with alcohol can hurt your

liver. Be very aware that just as our bodies change with age, so does our

tolerance of alcohol!!

For more information, seek out the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and

Alcoholism at www.niaaa.nib.gov or National Institute on Aging Information

Center at www.nib.gov/HealthInformation.

Fitness Classes

ATTENTION! ATTENTION!

Exercise Class Changes Starting March 1, 2017, several changes to the exercise classes will take effect. There will be much more flexibility for students. You will be able to come and go as you need to, try different classes to find your favorites, and pay only for those classes that you attend. This is how it will work: There will be changes in the class structure:

Students will not have to sign up for an 8 week series. Students will be able to start a class at any point in time. Students can drop in to try out different classes.

Students will have two payment options: Pay $5 per class at the time of the class, regardless of the class you attend. Set up an account and deposit a sum of money into it. When you use your swipe card to sign in, $5.00 will be deducted from your account. This will minimize the need to carry cash. (Minimum deposit is $25.00, maximum deposit is $100.00)

Students will no longer have to pay for a class they miss. Class fees, which are currently $35 for 8 weeks, or $4.38 per class, will go up to $5.00 per class, an increase of 68 cents per class. We believe that most students will actually find this new system will save them money, because they will no longer have to pay for a class they miss due to illness, vacations, or other causes. We still encourage a goal of a minimum of 10 students per class in order for a class to continue. We hope that these changes will encourage you to explore additional classes, and to start a class when your motivation is high, rather than having to wait for a new series to start.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

THE CHRONICLE ~ APRIL 2017 | 15

In order to safeguard your personal information, we are discontinuing the practice of publishing birthdates and anniversaries in our newsletter. This will be disappointing to some, but we are convinced that it is one step we can take to help reduce your exposure to potential scams and identity theft. You will still receive a card in the mail with an invitation to the monthly birthday/anniversary party. Scammers are so skilled and manipulative that even many very smart people are getting scammed. Approach phone calls and online contacts with a healthy dose of skepticism. Common scams include: • A crying “grandchild” who is in trouble and needs money • The “IRS” insisting that you must pay them for back taxes • The “Utility Company” saying that if you don’t pay them, they will shut off your power • Online dating websites or a romantic partner who asks you for money • Supposed winnings or inheritances that you must pay a fee to receive • Fake charities with names that sound like familiar organizations Red flags that you are being scammed are: • Callers who ask for personal information • Callers who ask for social security, bank account, or credit card numbers, or money. Being pressured to act fast

• Being told to keep the transaction secret • Being asked to pay with gift cards or with an international money order. If you think you’ve been scammed, call the police department. People are often embarrassed to tell others that they have been scammed, but it’s important to talk about it openly, so you can prevent someone else from becoming a victim.
