VICTORY DANCE
Roger Schmidli
Duration: 3’55” Level: 3
Program Notes:
Recall a moment of great celebration - a goal scored to win an important game, a great
exam mark after months of work, a new job or any other fantastic moment of triumph in
life. Victory Dance is music that reflects a moment when you just feel that fantastic that
you need to get up and move!
Importantly, moments like this are so wonderful because of the effort and the struggle to
achieve them. The music throughout this work reflects the tumultuous journey to achieve
our goals, including moments of frustration where the joyous melody is held back by
ominous undertones. Ultimately, however, after a moment of reflection, the celebration
of an achievement hard won continues to the conclusion of the work.
Rehearsal Notes:
As always, a successful performance will rely on accurate attention paid to articulation
and dynamics. Articulation is of particular importance in the rhythmic motif that appears
from [54]. Energetic and correct ensemble on this motif will create the energy for an
‘uplifting’ feel to the dance theme throughout.
Percussion plays an important role in this piece. Covering all of them is highly desirable
to achieve the full impact of the performance. At the least, however, Timpani, Percussion
4, snare drum on Percussion 1 and suspended cymbal elements of Percussion 2 are
essential (4 players). If your percussion section is small, it is recommended to consider
using some ‘non percussion’ members of your band whose parts are well covered and
who are up for the challenge of playing the remaining percussion parts.
About the Composer:
